We were travelling down from Florence and rang ahead to ask if we could have a meal when we arrived. Little did we know the splendour that awaited us! After a beautiful drive up the meandering hill and freshening up in our lovely room, we were shown to the terrace, shaded by a huge fig tree. Franca had cooked us an unforgettable feast of stuffed courgette flowers, a pasta to die for and a whole local fish displayed on a large platter, while Franca's brother Enzo unobtrusively played piano. The rest of the time meals were taken with the other guests around a long table which felt very Italian! The fresh local produce is amazing and eating the fruit and buffalo mozzarella on the terrace in the morning light is wonderful. The town is charming with little streets to wander through. I was very sorry to leave and can't wait to go back - next year hopefully!

As a family of four, we recently stayed in the Albergo II Castello in Castellabate for a week and fell in love with the place. Great views down the mountain and out to the Mediterranean frame the beautiful, spacious balconies of the hotel's rooms while wonderful plants and flowers make up the almost-covered terrace where breakfast is served in good weather. The rooms are charming and clean and the whole place is full of character - in particular, the owner and manager of the hotel Franca who is the most welcoming host you could wish for. Franca will go out of her way to make your stay as comfortable as possible as well as providing you with helpful advice and tips for places to visit and see in the region. She speaks excellent English which is a huge help and is always eager to share her favourite spots and secrets with her customers - who seem to quickly turn from clientele into new friends! The hotel is said to be very busy in the summer so we would suggest visiting Castellabate in September instead - we found this to be particularly peaceful while still being able to enjoy good weather and the warm sea. Going at a quieter time also meant that we were able to eat in the hotel, with Franca cooking up delicious, traditional Italian meals including a variety of home-made antipasta dishes, followed by delicious pasta and main courses of sea food with an array of sides. All the food was of an exceptional quality, the epitome of local, traditional, homely Italian cuisine. All the guests sat down for dinner together with the chef Franca, all of which contributed to a wonderfully warm and welcoming atmosphere and a spirit of community and camaraderie that will stay with us for some time to come! Being able to eat around the family table together felt like quite a privilege. Breakfast is served outside on the terrace with a buffet of jams, cheeses, meats and cakes available, including fresh Buffalo mozzarella every morning, which is not to be missed! The Medieval town, Castellabate, is also a sight to behold. With its winding paths and stone steps stretching out in every direction around the houses, small squares and up to the castle at the top of the hill, it feels like stepping back in time. There are a number of restaurants in the town and a handful of small shops. Though it is a protected, walled city on the mountain side, it is only a half an hour walk or a short drive down to the beach. The beach also features some real finds in terms of seafood restaurants - we recommend asking Franca for her favourite picks. The medieval magic of Castellabate - set of the popular Italian film Bienvenuti Al Sud - combined with the kind heartedness of Franca, her exquisite culinary skills and her wonderfully welcoming attitude makes this the ideal destination for a relaxing, regional stay just a few minutes away from beautiful beaches, a variety of delicious local produce and amazing views and landscapes. I would like to wholeheartedly give my thanks to Franca once more for a thoroughly relaxing and enjoyable week having been welcomed into her hotel and home with open arms. Alla prossima Franca!

We enjoyed a lot staying at Franca's hotel and eating her fabulous food. We are foodies and normally we do not eat in hotels a lot but we carefully select our eateries based on recommendations. Here we enjoyed Franca's cooking five nights out of seven. The dinners were versatile with several starters, a pasta from seventh heaven, usually fish for main course and a dessert. The guests were sitting at one big table or in separate, depending on preferences and Franca mostly joined at the table, which truly added value since she is fluent in English and good advocate for her town, region and country. The breakfast is also very good, comprising both of salty and sweet as well as fresh fruit. So far all good, for any guest. However, there are a few things to acknowledge and frankly, I was a bit hesitant about our stay in the very beginning. But she won my hearth as a person and with her cooking. First of all, if you have something against cats, don't even consider. You will see seven cats that are very clean animals, but their food is a bit smelly, which you notice at the entrance, but it didn't bother in the room. The house would benefit from a bit of renovation, it has been a while since. However, the rooms are very well cleaned daily and the bed extremely well laid. We had a fantastic terrace with both sea view and view toward the green hills. There the wifi also worked. We had originally made a reservation for five days but extended our stay to a week because we slept like babies and didn't want to leave the delicious dinners.

We spent 6 wonderful days in May at Franca's hotel, and found it just as good as all the previous reviewers --- better even. Our room was very comfortable, and the view from our terrace spectacular. Franca was hospitable and wise. When we arrived, we were the only guests (other than a relatively recently arrive party of 5 kittens). Another couple arrived a few days after us. But Franca and her staff treated us royally. Breakfast was a highlight of our day. Such a bountiful array of local produce, beautifully prepared and presented. Feasting on fresh bufalo mozzarella, tomatoes, fruit and salume (inter alia) under the fig tree on the patio was such a delightful experience. Franca and her wonderful cooks also provided several dinners, which were equally memorable. Traditional local foods : fish both large and small, shelled and finned ; perfectly cooked pasta ; fresh vegetables. And copious quantities of regional wine. There is more to life than food (allegedly), and we loved our stay in Castellabate. Wandering the narrow streets of the village, braving the hilly curvy roads to tour the coast and the ruins of Magna Graecia, a splendid and memorable experience, in large part due to Franca's advice. Catellabate was one of our most pleasant and memorable trips ever, and the Albergo was perhaps the highlight of Castellabate.

My friend and I stayed here for the second time. What a place to be ,for us it was paradise. Peaceful , easy and welcoming. Sigra.Franca makes you feel at home, starting with a superb breakfast under the figtrees on a wonderful terrasse finishing off with a great food in the evening ,prepared by Franca herself . Sometimes accompanied by piano musik played by her brother Enzo. The room with a big balcony overlooking the very beautiful landscape tops it all. We fellt like family and it made our goodby not so easy. The staff also was very kind and helpful as well. We surely will visit again ,hopefully for a longer stay.

A very warm welcome by the delightful Franca, who spoke excellent English and for whom nothing was too much trouble, suggesting places to visit, and cooking us a wonderful supper on our first night (at which we were serenaded by her brother on the piano!). The breakfasts were also excellent and interesting, with fresh local produce. The Albergo is in a great location close to the piazza and to parking, with wonderful views from our lovely balcony over the surrounding countryside to the sea in the distance. The place had a charming air of slightly faded grandeur (in the nicest possible way!) giving it a very 'authentic Italian' and homely feel. We would definitely stay here again and recommend it to our friends. P.S. We hope that Franca has by now found homes for all the dear little kittens...

We spent four nights at Albergo Il Castello and we strongly recommend this place. We were welcomed by Signora Franca who was very nice and very helpful; she gave us the best tips for restaurants, visits or beaches and arranged everything for us. The room was very comfortable, quiet and clean. As italian food fans, we acknowledge that the breakfast was the best we ever had with the best products served by a very nice staff. The best way to start a new day in this lovely region.

Albergo II Castello is a little gem, especially if you have a room with a balcony to enjoy the amazing panoramic views. Nothing is too much trouble for the wonderful Franca who speaks excellent English.Breakfast is substantial and always fresh.Excellent value for money, hope to return someday.

Castellabte is a stunning relatively undiscovered medeaval hilltop village on the Cilento coast of Campagnia just an hour or so's drive from Salerno and a million miles from that frantic overrated hot spot.Franca your sophisticated hostess sevs up the best plentiful breakfast and if your very lucky will cook an evening meal for you that's to die for. The hotels balcony's look out over hils as stunning as any in Tuscany and the local square around the corner is idylic, one half is a family restaurant the other half an outside bar the atmoshphere is authentic they projected the World cup onto a wall of a local house for all the village to see, hardly a non Italian tourist in sight. There's actual sand on the beach at St Maria del Castellabate at the bottom of the hill and stunning food there at Mauro's La Taratuga beach bar. Came 4 years ago and just keep coming back for a couple of weeks on my way to England.from Australia, what better recomendation than that. You can keep the madness of the mass tourism of Amalfi coast this is the real thing.
