Just returned from a fantastic week at the Etoile de Neige, a lovely three star hotel in a fantastic position, located right next door to the Chamole lift on one side and a magic carpet on the other. All the staff are extremely friendly and couldn't do more to make for a great holiday, yes the rooms are a little dated but how many three star European ski resort hotels aren't! The rooms are spacious with plenty of hanging space, a large bathroom and balcony with wonderful views of either the slopes or the whole of the Aosta Valley. Reading some of the other reviews about the food I thought I was staying at a different hotel! Breakfast was the usual fair of cereals, croissants, hams, cheese, yoghurts or scrambled eggs. Evening meal time at 1930 was perfect for us and the food was plentiful with the added bonus of a great salad bar if you didn't fancy one of the four course options on offer that night. Pila is a perfect resort if skiing with children, the Chamole lift which is right nextdoor is located up a flight of around 20 steps from the back of the ski storage room then a easy blue run from the top of the Chamole down to the ski school meeting place, so no stressful mornings getting little ones to ski school. Another big bonus with Pila is the prices, for the past ten years we have alternated between Belle Plagne & Courchevel and everything is half the price you would pay in those two resorts and the quality of food on the mountain etc was often better. …
Stayed here for 1 week whilst skiing with family of four (kids 3&7) in Pila. Check-in reasonably seamless with right forms and proof of vaccination. Hotel has decent enough boot room and a sperate ski storage area in the garage area, all located on the same level as reception. Masks need to be worn around the hotel (any will do as never challenged) but not when sitting in bar area or restaurant. There is a good games room with table tennis, table football and an American pool table, all free. Sauna was never used but you need to book an hour in advance for them to warm it up and cost of appx €15 pp. Rooms large and slightly dated but have either a view of the Aosta valley or the slopes and had decent balconies. Beds were quite hard as were pillows. Plenty of storage. Mealtimes were below average. Breakfast was usual continental style with cheese, ham, rolls etc and a small selection of cereals and yogurts plus toast and fruit. Drinks situation at breakfast was a pain, small plastic white cups used for juice and cold water from machines (could have had table water and glasses like at dinner). Always large queues for the one coffee / tea machine. All food served by staff due to covid. Little choice for children in evening, especially if a bit fussy, although staff were great and accommodating. Mine ended up having tomato pasta every evening. No pizza, chips etc. Food is buffet style but served at counter and a cold starter is provided at the table. Desserts were ok and ice cream available every night. Bar area sufficient but no atmosphere. Seating comfortable enough. Access to slopes not great despite location. Icy outside and no steps to nursery area. Steps to climb for access to Chamole lift which can be a bit dicey in ski gear. Overall, basic ski hotel and behind the times in comparison to other resort hotels I have stayed in, bit like going back to school holiday ski hotels. Staff really nice though and wouldn't take much to improve it. Pila resort OK for a week, especially with kids as blue and red (and even black run that was open) were easy enough to ski. Saturday got busy but reasonably quiet rest of the time. Wouldn't return but no regrets going and had a great week skiing.…
Just stayed here on a ski trip in Pila. Hotel adequate as a base but it is in need of updating. On the plus side, the ski in ski out location is ideal although the run down gets busy by the gondola. Additionally the staff were superb. Great views from the balcony overlooking Aosta are a bonus. It could improve on small things such as decor being refreshed, using the right glasses and the catering. There were times at breakfast when the queue for the coffee machine had more people than were sat down. Also having to use plastic cups rather than glasses at breakfast seemed wasteful from a cost and environment perspective. It was frustrating not being able to pay for drinks in the hotel bar as you go, having to run up a bill at the end of the week not knowing how much it might be given prices not displayed. Overall, ok. Happy enough with it but could be a lot better with some investment.…
This was our third time staying at the hotel. It has changed ownership since our previous visit but the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff remains unchanged. It is very close to the. Chamole lift so getting up on the slopes couldn’t be easier although the access can be icy. If you are hiring ski equipment you are taken to the hire shop and brought back. There is a room in the garage to store skis and a comfortable boot room in the hotel. At the end of your stay you just leave your equipment there and it is collected for you. What could be easier. The rooms are spacious and warm with ample hot water. Downstairs there is a bar in the evening and a range of seating areas for guests. Some are a bit open but there is a very cosy area with a fire where quite a few of us gathered to share stories of the day...very sociable. COVID has led to some changes in the way meals are organised. Buffets have given way to starters being pre-laid on the table which is a shame as previously this was a highlight of the meal. Similarly breakfast is no longer a buffet but is managed well by the waiting staff. There is plenty of choice and the desserts this time were particularly good. We would definitely return.…
The positives - Good location with good sized rooms and in the main part the staff are friendly and helpful. The negatives!! Restaurant - More like a school lunch hall and not a pleasant experience in any respect. Your not allowed in till 19:30 which is a long time after skiing so buy that time you're starving. Ironically being starving is a necessity when it comes to eating the food. Food - Very poor. Breakfast - Typical continental affair but with stale bread roles from the night before. Dinner - Starter - No choice of starters, Starters left out to go stale & congeal before your allowed into the restaurant. Main courses - Served from a buffet bar but left to go cold before the restaurant opened so not pleasant to eat. Generally unappealing anyway and a very low standard. Desert - A choice of ice creams which were nice. Other deserts were left out for too long so stale if they were cake based. All cold deserts. Bottles of water, wine and beer if you want it - Don't try and take unfinished bottles of water to your room though as that's not allowed. They would rather waste it and try to get you to buy bottles from the bar. Notices appeared next to the tables on day three chastising those taking water and glasses. As there are also no glasses in the rooms that seemed a little petty. Actually it all seemed rather petty. Our children both had days where they were not up for coming to dinner feeling tired or sick so taking a bit of food and water which we had paid for would seem appropriate. Be prepared for a rush and a queue as people try to get the last remnants of heat in the food. If you are budgeting budget to eat out. Only problem being all the restaurants are a good walk up to the main village. Outside on the terrace is nice in the sun but they never put seats out so it was unusable! All sounds rather negative but if they sort themselves out and start thinking about their customers experience it would be excellent. So easy to put right if they want too. Oh and they have Wifi but not really! When everyone is back in the hotel the bandwidth is too poor to use it.…
This family hotel in the ski resort of Pila is a great choice for a warm welcome. Although slightly dated in places the hotel was spotlessly clean. The staff were all cheerful, friendly and efficient. Excellent location for the ski slopes and lift.
Spent fabulous week at this hotel booked via Crystal, 1-8 Mar. Staff were excellent - beyond the call of duty when friend had to get prescription but local Pila pharmacy was closed, front of house lady collected meds from Aosta, very much appreciated given it was a whiteout that day! 50cm fell! Transfer from Turin 1hr 30 which is great and the skiing was excellent, views breathtaking. Hotel could not be closer to the chair to get started for the day - practically could ski into the garage after the snow on the Thur! The bedroom was roomy and great to have big shower room with high ceiling meaning steamy mirror not an issue! Only negative is the rather uncomfortable seating in the reception/bar area - kept thinking they've missed a trick as would have spent more time,ie more money there! Such a shame for the whole of Aosta Valley that resorts have had to close since the 9th. Gutted seeing the webcams today - sun and pristine pistes with loads of snow and no people! Really wish the area well in a speedy recovery. Will definitely be back - if it's good enough for Graham Bell (GB racer /BBC Ski Sunday presenter) it must be good!…
Everything was easy in this friendly, family run hotel. Rooms are a good size with wonderful views of iconic Alpine mountains and Aosta in the valley below. The good quality food is excellent, well-presented and plentiful. All the staff are first rate and Alessandro showed time and again that nothing was too much trouble for him. Hotel is well situated for access to the pistes.
We (a family of four - two adult and two teenagers) stayed here February half term 2020. We had two rooms adjacent to each other facing towards the mountains. This is an excellent hotel for ski out/in access. Very clean hotel - we enjoyed the food which reflected the area and found all the staff to be very helpful and friendly. The two waitresses were outstanding in their hard work and always were very friendly . It may not suit everyone but we really enjoyed our stay at the hotel. Some may find the skiing limited but there was enough for us in a week - the pistes were well prepared every day, better value than French resorts and the lift queues were shorter (accepting it was UK half-term).
Stayed here in half term last week. The owner and all his staff are first rate nothing was too much trouble. Food is good quality and plentiful - I had an apparent single room but was large enough to sleep at least 3. Bed extremely comfortable and copious amounts of towels for the bathroom. The bathroom was obviously suitable for the disabled and was in fact a wet room in every sense of the word as it took hours for the floor to dry after showering. However I had plenty of hot water and the shower flow was strong. It would be a good idea to take own toiletries though as the soap given was miniscule. Hotel is a little on the tired side and could perhaps do with an upgrade especially with the almost non-existent wifi, plus as in most hotels these days better lighting. However I wouldn't hesitate to return here next year not least because the staff were kind and tremendously helpful. It is also well situated for access to the pistes.…
