My 4th time staying here and my 4th time reviewing Al Poggiolo, and uploading photos (see my other photos and reviews from previous years) under the name "nonnaleyone." I have stayed here each time with different family members. A wonderful place for a vacation. I have stayed in 3 different apartments and seen 5 of them. I like them all equally. Very quiet place to stay and sleep. The beds are comfortable. The owners are warm and welcoming with a lot of helpful written and verbal information provided for quests. The apartments are beautifully decorated in the simple, authentic, Tuscan style with Italian antique furniture. Even though we ate out a lot it is most helpful to wake up in the morning and make coffee and a light breakfast before venturing out. I love to have the added room available in these apartments rather than a single hotel room. All the comforts are provided. There is Satellite TV, which I have never turned on, free WIFI, bedding, towels which are washed and changed at the end of your stay or weekly. Free use of washer/dryer in hallway for quests. There is access to a quiet, side street in town to walk around. One can eat dinner in town and drink the wonderful wine and walk to the apartments without worrying about drinking and driving and then finally, falling into a blissful night's sleep in the quietness of one of the apartments.

We also stayed in Giardino 3 also like the previous reviewer. This is in a stately building situated high up in town with its own large lovely gated yard. It was on a street parallel to the main street and also close to the historical square. Enjoying an upper position, the building had high panoramic views. Parking inside the gate was a big plus. The owners were on the premises when we were there and they were a very nice couple willing to answer our questions. Our apartment had its own terrace which we enjoyed. The bath and a half bath were also a plus. The reason that my review rating is "average" is that it is time to update the apartment. The living room furniture was worn and sagging in spots. Also the water pressure was erratic and we could not keep the temperature constant, especially in the shower. The kitchen could really use an oven and some of the appliances were not in good working order. Also, some basic amenities would be nice. This is an apartment with good "bones" and I believe that with a facelift and attention to the plumbing, it can be a really great apartment again.

We stayed in Giardino 3. The views from the apartment are simply - just breathtaking! It was very well furnished with comfortable furniture. When we found ourselves staying in, we spent most of our time on the loggia, drinking in (visually and quite literally) the spectacular view of the landscape in front of us. The kitchen is equipped, however I did miss the fact that there was no oven in the unit. Also missing - an espresso pot? If you do plan on doing any cooking, please come prepared as there are absolutely no staples (i.e. salt, pepper, olive oil, extra toilet paper, etc.). The Conad is located a short 15 minute walk downhill but if you're carrying your bags, it is quite a challenging hike back up armed with bags. We left behind a lot of our "staples" purchased - hopefully to remain in the unit for the use of future tenants. The apartment is very well situated in Montepulciano - everything is within walking distance.

We spent a week in apartment 3 in September 2014. In a word, this apartment is a gem and perfectly located as a base to visit Tuscany. We were welcomed by Elena who gave us some history of this wonderful family property, surrounded with gardens, located high along the walls of the old city , to which we had direct access. Views from our balcony and windows are breathtaking. The apartment offers all amenities and is perfect for a couple. We simply loved getting back to it at the end of the day. Many thanks to Elena and her family for a memorable stay.

We spent a week here, 5 of us renting 2 apartments - Giardino 2 and Borgo B. The apartments had everything we needed to make our stay comfortable and we were made welcome by Margherita and Giorgio. Prior to our arrival, emails were answered very promptly and in detail which made the whole process very easy. Margherita also suggested we use Enrico Carbone as we wanted to do a day trip to Urbino and also one to Assisi and Spello. He was also very efficient at answering emails and providing quotes and was extremely punctual aside from being a good and safe driver. We ended up also using him to do a trip to Montalcino and the Sant Antimo Abbey and also to go back to the station in Chiusi Chianciano on our departure. His services are highly recommended. We loved our stay in Montepulciano - we did a number of walks and hikes to Pienza and San Quirico and it was very easy to catch the bus back to Montepulciano at the end. We ate at La Pentolaccia 3 times and one night they made us a big pot of Ribollita soup to eat in the apartment - the food was delicious and the service was friendly and efficient so we kept going back! Having the use of a washing machine and dryer was invaluable. The 2 mini marts were handy for small items and the supermarket was not too far away and we were able to manage without renting a car. All in all, a very pleasant place to stay.

Thank you for sharing your ‘positive discoveries’, regarding some lateral aspects that may be not sufficiently pointed out in our web-sites, but which guests coming after you would probably find very helpful. One such discovery is the precious collaboration of Enrico Carbone, whose efficiency as a driver and a tour guide you have rightly emphasized. It is true in fact, that more and more often we are visited by travellers who have decided to give themselves a break from driving: a wise choice, as long as good alternatives can be guaranteed; and our friend Enrico has demonstrated to be a brilliant solution, allowing our guests to alternate restful car trips to energic climbing when exploring the hilly towns of Tuscany!

My husband and I stayed in garden apt no. 4. The place is absolutely charming; tile floors, beamed ceiling, fireplace and lovely antiques. The views into the valley are breathtaking; every evening we took time to watch the sun set, and the ground fog in the morning was equally atmospheric and lovely. Montepulciano is a great base for exploring Tuscany and the apartment is located right up the hill from the major road travelling from Chiusi to the west. And Montepulciano in the evenings with wood smoke and a chill in the air is absolutely magical -you have the crooked Medieval streets all to yourself. But you know what is the best part of these apartments? The DRYER! Trust me, after weeks of wearing "crispy" jeans, that dryer was wonderful! A few tips - bring slippers, the tile floors are cold. And if you rent a 2 bedroom apartment for 2 people (so you can escape the snoring) be aware that the second bed will not have sheets on it!

Oooohhh, your review contains such a poetic description of Montepulciano. All senses are invited to experience our place: sunset colours for sight, mist for tact, chimney smoke for smell - bird chirping is better enjoyed during Spring - and, as to taste, it doesn’t even need to be mentioned, in a place like Montepulciano! Passing from poetry to prose: 1) glad you were appreciating the dryer! 2) as to sheets: we accept your point, as a lesson that will help us to do better in the future. We have realized that our “rules” regarding pricing, as they are now, are not clear and need to be improved. Your surprise, on the occasion of your recent visit, is therefore fully understandable and we apologize for deceiving you under this aspect. But in the meantime you have gained something to be proud of: our gratitude for driving our attention on that question!

We stayed at Appartamenti al Poggiolo twice, in June 2012 and in June 2013, altogether four weeks, when we were studying Italian at Il Sasso, the nearby language school (5 minutes' walk). From the very beginning of our first contact by email we got the impression that these people weren't just doing their job but were really keen on arranging everything to suit us in the best possible way. The first time we had to put off the stay because of illness but everything turned out to be perfect once we'd arrived. During the four weeks we got to know the family, all five members, but mostly we were in contact with Margherita, Giorgio and their son Giacomo. They are most helpful and warm people, which was shown especially when I had to go to hospital this June and the family helped a lot with the arrangements. We agree on all the superlatives the former writers have used when describing these apartments. We stayed in Borgo A, which is in a different building from the Giardino apartments. I fell in love with this small apartment at first sight online because of the beautiful furnishing and especially because of the loft with a skylight. We didn't really need the loft but I think it would be an ideal place for two teenagers to stay in. For small children the stairs may be a little dangerous. This apartment also has two luxurious bathrooms (with the best showers we've ever experienced). There is a view to the street only from this apartment but there is a nice narrow balcony on one side and you can just squeeze in two chairs and sit there in the evening and watch people walking down the street. The street has a "monument" just under the balcony: a very old red Fiat seems to be permanently stationed there. We have the fondest memories from Montepulciano and the Borgo A apartment and hope to return one day.

Thank you for sharing the superlative opinions on our place, expressed by former comment-writers! And how brilliant it was to put the accent on the loft with the skylight, as “an ideal place for teenagers to stay in”. It may be just a coincidence… but we have recently had among our guests a family with twin girls aged 10 who simply adored that window on the roof, bringing the stars and moonshine just over their beds…!

We spent 5 nights in apartment Borgo B. It was homey, cozy and perfect for the two of us. Our experience was pleasant, from the time we began correspondence to the moment we (sadly!) left. All our emails were answered promptly and with detail. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Margherita and Giorgio. They spent plenty of time showing us the apartment and making sure we were comfortable. The next day, Elena and Dominique, stopped by to say hi and let us know they were available (just across the street) if we needed anything. Even though this is self-catering, it's reassuring to know that assistance is available it you need it. They even gave us one of the informative Montepulciano map/guides they publish. On 3 of our nights, we cooked dinner. There was nothing lacking in the kitchen. It's worth the trek to the larger grocery store but the small markets in town do have a nice selection. Also, we were initially hesitate about making the reservation because, unlike the other apartments, Borgo B does not really have a view. However, we started each day, sitting next to the open bedroom window, drinking coffee and listening to the sounds of the street. This is one of the best memories of our stay. We really didn't want to leave and hope to someday return!

Thank you, you pointed out an interesting aspect of the difference between our Giardino apartments and Borgo apartments. It is true that these last, where #B is included, do not have a view over the countryside. But the atmosphere they offer has a particular, although different kind of charm, made by the total immersion in the urban life of our small town: voices, neighbouring, short walking distance to/from practically anywhere, and more opportunities to chat with local people. Ideal for students of the Il Sasso language school, which is located barely few steps away from the Borgo Apartments!

These apartments in Montepulciano are a wonderful spot to stay for a trip to Tuscany. You will be in a great place for planning day trips. The town becomes busy in the daytime, but in the evening, when the day trippers go, it is lovely and peaceful. There are great restaurants and it may be wise to reserve at the more popular ones. Even so, if you walk around you will surely find a place serving something delicious and walking the hills of Montepulciano will help you earn your dinner! The owners' website is a perfect and most helpful representation of the apartments. You can see photos of each one, the layout of the room/rooms and the prices. They are available but not intrusive. Private parking behind a locked gate is available, so you can leave extra things in your car without worry. Our apartment, Borgo B was perfect for two. Take note that this is an apartment, not a hotel, so you may think about stocking up on a few provisions before entering town. The mini marts in town are pricey and there is a convenient supermarket near Sant' Agnese church. Our studio apartment is quite comfortable...great wifi, heat (ac too if you need it,) washing machine (no dryer), hair dryer, iron. I would love a couple more towels! Would I rent here again? In a heartbeat! So...when are you coming? Should we wait for you? ;)

“Wonderful” is a most appropriate word for defining your comment. Lots of info, lots of praises… and one mistake: no a/c - not really needed, in buildings with thick stone walls - but just ordinary fans. As to towels, we esteemed that 3 towels x person x week (one large bathtowel, one standard, and one small) would be sufficient; but we accept your demand for more, and we’ll give you more on your next visit!

What a brilliant description, in only two lines. And what a smart selection of the points to be recommended - size, location and atmosphere - for which the adjectives that have been used are “great” and “beautiful”. Synthetic and at the same time highly appreciative. Thank you!
