Our stay at Hotel Santo Stefano was just perfect. Hotel style is rustic/Mediterranean, very classy. Rooms are simple but again great taste and details. Immaculately clean. Food is phenomenal. Breakfast was great, with authentic Italian coffee to your like. The view of the restaurant and from the room was phenomenal. Yoga classes are offered. Unforgettable experience doing yoga outdoors under the sunrise sun and trees. Optional dinners, exquisite service. My Italian sister in law had stayed there and highly recommended it. After searching A LOT of options, we decided to follow her advice and we're completely satisfied with this dream vacation. I honestly don't get how they're only 2 stars hotel. Our experience was 5 plus stars!

I’ve been here many, many years ago and always remembered this place with its beautiful view in a valley of olive trees as one of the best holiday destinations to relax.
This time we were very spontaneous in regards to Elba and where lucky we got a room at hotel Santo Stefano last minute.
Again, it was a very pleasant occasion.
The owners, their daughter, the staff is extremely friendly. The breakfast on the terrace with its stunning view over to the capital is wonderful - fresh fruits, cheeses, all you wish for.
The three course dinner is fantastic - you can enjoy the sunset over the main harbor, overlooking the bay.
The rooms are very clean and regularly renovated if not renewed. All perfect.
We also had the chance to get some laundry done and to store wine and oil that we bought on the way or on Elba itself.

I can absolutely recommend this place for its beauty, quietness, food, rooms, views, friendliness and its overall quality. You will not be disappointed! Always again.
Thanks again to the wonderful owners!

We more or less spontaneously decided to spend Ferragosto (Aug 15) in Elba and flew to the airport from Venice Lido. Once we arrived we had to realize that it was almost impossible to find a single hotel with vacancies. Michaela at the tourist boot at the airport did all she possibly could and tried to phone all closeby hotels.
Of course, it's absolutely our fault to be so crazy to go on a small island on one of Italy's most important holidays.
When I saw on a booking site that they still have one room left I called Santo Stefano. The lady on the phone was amazingly friendly and reserved the room until our arrival on Elba. Although it's just 15km away from the airport google estimated it would be an expensive 45 mins drive by taxi. When I called again, the lady told me that they would even arrange transfer for a reasonable price. Finally, we found a totally overpriced hotel not far away from the airport. As we planned to depart early next day we ended up staying there :/
I would have really enjoyed to stay at Santo Stefano given how helpful and supportive the contact was. Thanks again for the great service!

Due to a silly oversight on our behalf, we had double booked at this hotel via Booking.com. We received a call from a lovely woman from the hotel on the first nighof our trip and we were horrified when we realised our mistake. We agreed of course to pay for this first night in full. She then explained that she wouldn't charge us for the other three nights. I asked if we could still stay and pay for the last night of our booking but were then told the room was no longer available. Strange but obviously a busy period meant they were able to fill the room immediately.

We were so thankful and went to bed feeling stupid but relieved. I emailed the following morning for confirmation but never heard back. Strange again.

We then noticed we were charged for all four nights (600 Euros) despite the assurance from the lady on the phone that this would not be the case. After several emails I received the following mail from the manager...

"I apologize for the misunderstanding and that you might have got incomplete
or maybe inaccurate information from our employee. Agreements concerning
booking or cancellation conditions have to be made only with the management."

Silly us for expecting that someone who called us representing the hotel is not actually able to do so.

Really greedy of the hotel manager Thomas to not agree to a compromise with us as this was a large chunk out of our long-saved-for trip and they were obviously able to fill the room immediately and didn't lose any money.

Booking.com also contacted the hotel on our behalf and they were unwilling to budge.

For the record, I did contact the hotel to tell them I would be posting this feedback and was met with a very rude response.

This hotel is in a lovely peaceful position overlooking Portoferraio. Although about 15 mins from the town center, it is still quite central with Portoazzuro and Capoliveri only 15-20mins away. We hired scooters while we were in Elba and we could reach most of the beaches in under an hour. In fact, there are some lovely and very private beaches only a matter of minutes from the hotel.

The hotel is well maintained and the owners clearly take pride in their hotel. The rooms are simple but tastefully decorated. The grounds have some lovely seating areas and the open air terrace / patio is a beautiful spot for an afternoon drink and for breakfast in the morning.

Breakfast is fresh and there is plenty of choice. Made to order coffee is a lovely addition. The hotel offers evening meals, although we were out every night so we didn't get to try.

So, for 6 nights it was a pleasure to stay at this hotel and we were sad to leave Elba. We would recommend this hotel, although you will need a car to get the most out of the location (as with most places in Elba)

Our thanks to the owners, who were most helpful during our stay.

David

We spend here 5 days.
On the positives: Very nice location with a great view towards Portoferraio. Food is good: breakfast has enough choices and is of excellent quality, dinner is great and very affordably priced with Euro 15. Set-up of rooms is nice depending on which one you are allocated to. We had a room with view to Porteferraio so was nice to be out on the sun chairs (unfortunately the steel tables and chairs were very corroded - see the minus points).
On the negatives: Outdated room. Very poor mattress which was worn out as there was placed a wooden skeleton on top of the wooden bottom frame of the bed to try and get little more lifetime out of the mattress. This means that you always roll to the center of the mattress, and in my case a bad sleep with aches in my back and neck. The steel chairs and table in front of the each room were very corroded, so unusable to enjoy the view in front of the room. Shower head did not function well; likely filled with limestone out of the water. For this time of year (May 2014) very cold stone floor. Maybe in hot summer days/nights this turns into a positive point.
On base of the ratings and reviews I had better expectations of this hotel. So I can only advise to temper your expectations regarding quality of the room and the equipment in/at the room.

Two stars can guide in a wrong judgment of this place (just one year back I got it was even 1 star) that needed to be discovered.
saying that place itself and nice landscape are not the only good thing about this place
I strongly recommend dinner... I'm italian and I know something about the food trust me you have to try... every evening different menù fish and meat or as alternative cheese and vegetables
breakfast is good as well, there are plenty choice that you can select, comparable to a 4/5 stars hotel
Last but not least service is another thing that I enjoy a lot, every time available and friendly with us
There are only couple of things that can transform this place in a sort of paradise: a swimming, kids will enjoy a lot and better parking.. it is too dusty. Other topic mosquitoes, not so many but there are anyway into the room they are anti mosquitoes tools that work.

All in all I know with my parents became "habitues" spending at least one vacation per year here
Enjoy

Everything was more than we ever expected, the rooms(simple, but do you need more?) ,the breakfast, the silence, the view, the familiar atmosphere, the staff always helpful and friendly...
There is no pool, but who needs a pool in elba?
You can follow the photos and go to the beaches you see on the website! Great Pictures!

The whole ambience of this hotel is wonderful! The views, the rooms, the food and dining experience were all first class.
We were only here for one night after a weeks stay at the other side of the island and on our way back to the ferry. If we had been staying longer, I would certainly say that a pool would have been welcome especially as it is a distance from the beach.
