When we returned to Naples to visit the extraordinary museum, completing our Pompeii experience, we took a ferry from Sorrento directly to Naples which was quicker and a pleasant experience, tho a more expensive option.
However you travel, stay safe and have fun !

we booked all our train tickets on the same day. The high speed train from Rome to Naples was great...no problem getting seats. The train to Sorrento has two versions...express and local. No problem getting tickets however we had to stand juggling luggage etc.The ticket agents warned us about pick pockets and sure enough someone attempted to! Just be on your guard. We used the Rick Steves travel book to navigate around and it was always spot on for directions etc.
