A warm welcome awaits you at West House Farm Cottages. Our modern dairy farm sits in the heart of the open countryside and has an abundance of widlife and views to both the Scottish and Lakeland fells. To complement our established Bendale Cottage, we have created two new barn conversions, Little Meadow and The Old Byre in the courtyard at West House Farm. This large courtyard offers private, safe and secure parking and is separated from the working farm by the 17th century bank barn.
Just returned from a 3 night break at the little meadow. The cottage is immaculate and well equipped with everything you need! Dishwasher, washer, dryer etc.. when we arrived Sue had left us a bottle of wine and fudge which was a really nice touch. There are gowns and slippers to use. The hot tub is fab (the kids loved spending their afternoons in it). Highly recommend staying here you will not be disappointed! Can’t wait to visit again!
Superbly equipped converted farm building, furnished to a high level and supplied with everything you need including towel robes and slippers! The kitchen has plenty of everything : all of high quality. Although this is on a working farm you are private and you can park outside your door. The hot tub is lovely and you can look over the fields whilst enjoying a glass of bubbly! These cottages are well thought out, spacious, well maintained and spotless. The location is wonderful too - with the lakes, west coast and even Scotland all nearby! We would recommend this venue highly and have just completed our third stay there - it never disappoints and the owners are on hand to help with anything you need. A great find.
This was something totally new for us, renting a cottage deep in the countryside, and taking the dog; so we had some trepidations. Would the dog behave, would the accommodation be as good as promoted etc. We certainly weren't disappointed. Everything was perfect, from the detailed instructions for finding West House Farm, to the warm welcome from Susan's daughter-in-law and everything else we could wish for. I couldn't recommend the Old Byre highly enough. It is situated on a working farm, so the dog was kept at close quarters and generally on a lead, but we were allowed to walk through the farm yard and lanes to observe the cows and farm at work. The Old Byre itself is a a single level converted barn, with an open plan kitchen/living area; two bedrooms, the smaller probably best suited to kids, a bathroom, plenty of storage, and a patio area with a hot tub. Beyond the patio is a small lawn area where chickens are housed, and then a small meadow where six friendly young cows roamed and kept the their eye on us! Further and beyond more fields with more cows and sheep, and a stunning view to the Northern peaks of the Lakes. Hares cavorted in the fields, and house martins (I think!), swooped to their nests in surrounding farm buildings. It is absolutely rural, extremely quiet, peaceful and massively relaxing. Just to watch the sun and clouds change the colour and perspective of the landscape at different times of the day was quite spectacular. The cottage itself is deceptively large, it is clean and well equipped. We wanted for nothing. All told I can't think of anything either of us could fault. This was a wonderful break, and we left wishing we could have had more time. We both agreed we'd be back, (assuming Susan, who is a great host will have us!). We found the Old Byre made a good base for exploring the area. If not obviously, certainly ideally you'll need a car (or cycle). It's really good for Keswick and Derwent Water which we very much enjoyed. Maryport is close and proved very good for dog walking around the harbour and sea wall. We also visited Penrith, Cockermouth, Ullswater, (inc. Glenridding &Aira Force), Buttermere and Windermere as we drove back down South. There really is plenty to see, and obviously the opportunity to get stuck into the traditional pastimes and activities associated with the Lakes. Many thanks to Susan and her family for sharing their farm, livelihood and residence with us townies and our dog. I hope we didn't get in the way or Simba upset the herd with his attempts to prove he was in charge! This was a lovely break and I don't know I've ever been so grouchy on a return to work! Hopefully you'll have us back and we can't wait!…
Spent 4 days over the Easter break staying in Little Meadow. It was our first holiday to the Lake District and we were blessed with wonderful unseasonable sunshine for the majority of our stay! Location wise, about 5 minutes drive from Cockermouth, which we thought was lovely with plenty of eating options, and 5 minutes from Maryport, which if I'm honest we weren't so impressed with. The cottage was excellent and had all the facilities you'd ever hope for. I can only think of 2 possible improvements... some sort of blind for the skylight in the master bedroom (only an issue in spring and summer with those light early mornings) and a 'privacy' fence separating the 2 hot tubs. Other than that it was perfect. WIFI was excellent and allowed streaming via SKY, Netflix, BT etc. Susan was a lovely host and even showed my wife and son around the farm while I took the opportunity of 1/2 hours peace in the hot tub with a couple of beers! As a bit of a 'twitcher' I also loved the fact that there were a pair of nesting Curlews in the field opposite.. loved their bird song. As I said it was our first visit to the Lakes and we will definitely return... without doubt my favourite part of the UK! We walked around Buttermere Lake (pretty easy) and climbed the 3000 foot mountain Helvelyn via the short/steep route (not so easy!) Keswick, Ambleside and Bowness on Windermere were also lovely places to visit although budget at least £30-£40 for parking over 4/5 days... it soon adds up! We will definitely return to both this beautiful area and WHF cottages.…
Booked this for my girlfriend’s 21st, cottage was so lovely in such a peaceful area. We had a relaxing stay and I would 100% recommend. Susan was so helpful and welcoming. The hot tub was spot on and easy to work. Everything was so clean and we couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay. Will definitely be returning.
