Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The landlord, Peter, was very nice at the first few days. We were thinking to stay there for 3 months, but then just 3 weeks we couldn’t stand anymore and decided to move out. He asked us to clean his house for 40 minutes/person/week, together with helping him to do his organic gardening every week without any pay but as a duty to live in a shared house. He doesn’t allow chicken bone & bivalve shell in his house so we had to throw those ones far outside the house when we want to have chicken or bivalve. When he wants to come in our room, he just knocks the door and opened it although we are all girls and sometimes we found he came in our room when we went for work. He turned off the kitchen fan and lights many times when we were cooking without saying any word. We got a deal 3 people in 2 rooms but later on he asked us to leave 1 room for his friend. When we gave him a leave notice 1 week prior, he said NZ law requires 2 weeks notice and we had to pay for 1 more week even though we don’t stay there then (we checked with the new landlord and she said that law is very new to her). We got no contract and were informed about that at the beginning. So my recommendation to you: if you just want to stay for a few days, it should be fine but if you want to stay longer, you should think carefully.

Response from Kiwiland-South, Owner at Neudorf's Gingerbread House
Responded 10 Nov 2017
In response to the review from Vandinhj, I welcomed this group of working foreigners into my home. They were not tourists or short term guests. And as such, they were not here to be hosted, but to live in my house and share all the facilities. In the end there were 5 in total, including one in a tent. However they were not all together, rather 3 parties that all cooked different meals. I asked them, which is normal in a situation like theirs, to help keep the place clean and tidy. I asked a modest rent from them. I was considerate and thoughtful towards their needs, however came to the conclusion that they were not so caring and thankful to live in such a beautiful place. Sure there were times when I needed to instruct them on the use of certain things, and that is normal. I enjoyed having them around, but found in part that they took things for granted. It is standard law in NZ to require tenants or the house owner to give 2 weeks notice. I never asked them to do the gardening for me, 2 of them offered. I just requested that they contribute to the cleanliness of the house, not more. I think in the end, they wanted their own space, in which to do whatever they wanted. They moved out, and that was ok. I would prefer to see this as - we did not like the place, so we decided to move on, than to lambast the way I treated them. Lastly, I have had a lot of tourists from overseas who come and stay 2-5 months with me, and everybody has been happy except this group.

It was a wonderful time...Peter is a really nice host and he makes you fell like home. The place is simply amazing, the location, the views, the organic food is great and everything together is so relaxing and calming. (the music certanly helps too) We had good time playing board games in the evening and having interesting talks!! We really thank you for your hospitality and kindness and we wish you all the best! With love, Sara and Brendan

With views to die for, fine wineries within walking distance. Great breakfast and comfy room. But most of all lovely natural and generous hosts. What more could you need!

We spent 2 wonderful peaceful nights here and loved every minute. This is a great location for exploring the Able Tasman National park. The cottage is very spacious and well equipped but it was the lovely views and serenity of the location which really appealed to us. Charming and very helpful hosts ensured our stay is one we will remember fondly.

My stay at Neudorf's Gingerbread House was back in February 2009. And it's already too long ago! It was a very nice and enjoyable stay! The family is very nice. The hosts Peter and Doris are Kiwi/Swiss and Englisch/German speaking. Their daughters are very friendy and nice too. They gave me many advices where to go and what to do. The house is close (about a one hour drive by car) to Nelson or Abel Tasman National Park as well as to the northern beaches of South Island. I definetly will - and already have - recommend this place to friends and all other people. I am looking forward to my next stay with you!

Very welcoming, met us with a big smile, you feel like at your own home. The hosts, Peter and Doris are great hosts, they make you feel so great and with their to kids you realy fill at home. As we arrived they welcome us with tea, coffee and wonderful biscuits. They wash our cloth and dry them. Peter baked for our breakfast his home-made soda bread, Doris made us her swiss-style muesli. They explained us what to see and where to go. Located in beautiful countryside, with stunning views and a lovely garden, it is a superb spot for visiting Nelson, Abel Tasman, Golden Bay and the surrounding area. We would definitely recommend having a Ginger Bread House experience.

We stayed three days with four persons (all adults) in the Gingerbread House and had a fantastic time there. Peter and Doris are marvellous people. They did everything possible to make our stay a pleasant one. The house has a traditional english atmosphere and is surrounded by beautiful gardens. The veranda offers a nice view on the landscape. This B&B is not located in a tourist centre but is great for anyone who wants to spent a few quiet and relaxing days and there are some nice wineries nearby. It takes less than one hour to drive tot Nelson by car.

My sister and I had a wonderful stay at the Neudorf Gingerbread House. It was lovely to be part of such a welcoming, knowledgeable and helpful family. The house is set in beautiful countryside and Nelson and Abel Tasman are easily accessible by car. The breakfasts we had at Neudorf were exceptional - fresh, wholesome, organic and delicious! If you want to be part of a New Zealand family for a while, then I genuinely recommend this homely friendly place.

Located in beautiful countryside, with stunning views and a lovely garden, it is a superb spot for basing yourself whilst spending a night or a week, visiting Nelson and the surrounding area. A really cosy, homely place, with a comfortable room, a wonderful log fire, a delicious organic breakfast of home-made soda bread and swiss-style muesli, and fabulous hosts who make you feel very welcome. I would definitely recommend having a Ginger Bread House experience.

This is a beautiful B and B with a cottage that will sleep a family of four, they also have guest rooms in their century old gorgeous home. The location is excellent if you want to see the general area of Nelson, Abel Tasman, and Golden Bay and need a base right in the center (about 30 min from Nelson and 30 minutes from Abel Tasman). The setting is ideal....the cottage and home are set in 5 acres of beautiful gardens and a wonderful view. The hosts, Peter and Doris, are fantastic. They will go out of their way to make your stay perfect. Peter is a great source from local tramps, off the usual tourist paths. Breakfast was available on the first day only, but you can have breakfast everyday for a nominal charge (there is a well-equipped kitchen in the cottage). A great place for a family or romantic getaway.
