Résidence La Joly was created in 2000 by Cor and Judy Overeem. With the purchase of a plot of land at the foot of the slopes, they have built in Austrian style five chalets. These chalets are luxurious apartments, B & B rooms, a private ski shop, common lounge with wood-burning stoves and Grand Café created. La Joly is now characterized by a high standard and guarantees a great winter or summer holiday. Portes du Soleil is in the winter a paradise for skiers. In the summer months are organized by Cor & Judy and Bill Owens golf courses. Jan and Els Kelder take over the organization of the bridge weeks on their behalf.

So second visit here, plus side, good location, next to La Chapelle-d’Abondance ski area, 100m away. Small but some great runs, 2 chair lifts and a few buttons including a 10 minute one to the best blues. Lovely tough red down to the bottom can get very icy though.
One café at the midway is run by idiots and would be avoided if any other choice.

The hotel is clean and the food is still good, Judy and the other staff are lovely, friendly and accommodating, Cor is a grumpy old bugger sometimes who has a habit of making you feel he’s doing you a favour by letting you stay there.

Ski hire on site is a bit over priced but convenient and the equipment is not great, better hire in the village.

Rooms are fine, always clean, basic but comfy enough.

Do not book in winter if you are elderly or unsteady as the outside areas are never cleared of ice. It’s a skating rink, dangerous and downright lazy, unforgivable really. (See pics)

Meal times are strict, breakfast 8-9 means you may miss the ski bus. Also there is no free bus to Chatel, need to get the Columbus for €1.50.

Over all a good experience though, The owner just needs to remember he’s in the service industry or go and do something else.

One other thing if you book direct he insists on cash only!

Absolute quality establishment. Great location just 70 yards form Ski lift with some nice runs.
Make sure you book half board at least, the food is beautiful, real home cooking and varied every night.
Ski and boot hire on site at good rates which is really handy.
Lovely friendly staff gives a real family feel and Judy and Cor (the owners) could not be nicer.
A total gem.

We had a just 1 night stay, but all was perfect in this time. So we arrived later than normal and they waited for us. We had the check in in our very friendly room. Nothing special, just friendly and confortable. The only thing we’d like to see maybe next time is a soap or something to wash your hands. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The breakfast was perfect. Not a huge buffet, bug enough and everytime something missed they refill them. Or we just had to ask to get something special.

Ghanks again for the stay, and see you next time. 😉

Having just stayed with Cor and his family I have to say what a fantastic host and location for our families first skiing trip. From our initial on line enquiry we were dealt with promptly and we were greeted warmly upon our are arrival. The accommodation was perfect, clean well maintained. It's location to the slopes was excellant and the food was large in portion size and fabulous to eat. The hosts could not have been more helpful and Cor himself was polite and helpful when hiring the ski equipment for my girls. His manner was always welcoming and so was all of his staff / family ( even the dog!)
Great people, great location, great accommodation and we will certainly come back. Thank you 👍

Just back from a ski short week with my teenage son in the Portes du Soleil. What great time we had, made most magnificent by Cor, Judy and the Dutch (and occasional Belgian!) team. Good quality, great value accommodation, perfectly placed on the local slopes with easy bus access up into the whole domain. Even Cor’s own ski/ boot hire was spot on. Meals were excellent, staff helpful, friendly and fun to chat to. Highly recommend!

Myself and friend Lucy had a fantastic 4 night skiing holiday here at La Joly. We also met up with 2 members of my family who also stayed for a night.

The hosts were very welcoming. Staff all lovely. We were sorted out with skis etc very quickly from hire shop below hotel. Small touches like advice on where to ski and giving us free loadable lift passes really made our holiday special.

The food was amazing. If you get the option for half board go for it! While we were there we had cheese fondue, salmon with a herb tagiatelle, weiner snitzel. Usually a starter and dessert too! One of my family is on a gluten free diet and they catered for her too at short notice. Homemade gluwein was amazing! Lovely wood burning stove in main room too.

Our room was great. Stunning views and plenty of room for two. There was also a third bed on a mezzanine level in our room. Big heated towel rail in bathroom was great for drying wet ski stuff.

I would definitely go back ⛷

Our stay began real good as they kept the kitchen available for us when we came late, and served a really nice dinner. However, things started to take a sour turn afterwards. The hotel is owned by the Dutch couple. Since I'm also half-Dutch, I know what to expect service-wise when Dutch are involved.

The wife Judy is a very pleasent, helpful, softspoken person. However, the husband Cor is simply awful. He has a huge attitude problem, makes uncomfortable jokes, totally not a welcoming kind of host and doesn't know how to treat guests properly. It is as if he was doing us a favor by letting us stay in his hotel. The treatment was that bad. We even had a few bust ins with him, where I openly told him that this is not the way to treat hotel guests.

When we made our booking online, we both called and emailed the hotel several times to ask certain questions. The owner Cor refused to answer any of them. We didn't understand why he would not reply to even simple questions.

Apart from the toxic and irritating behaviour of the male owner, the hotel is actually nice but they also fail on the service side. The breakfast starts at 8, meaning that you miss the first bus going to the slopes. The dinner time is completely random. Alhough we were served a great dinner first ight when we came around 21:30, the next evening (and it was a Saturday) we were told that kitchen is to be closed by 20:00. Since we were still resting in our rooms, and missed the dinner time. That evening the owner Cor was super rude and confronting. His wife had to play the nice host to calm things down, seeing that her husband was out of control.

All-in-all, the hotel is nice, but the male owner made our stay very uncomfortable. Hotel's location is not ideal, as you need either a car or a shuttle service. Wifi was excellent though. The staff was rather helpful and accommodating, but since the owner himself is so bad, the staff's hands were also tied up a little.
I wouldn't go to this hotel again due to its location, but mostly because of that horrible owner. Never want to see a host like that again.

One last issue; we were 3 friends. They made us book 2 separate rooms, although one of the rooms was big enough to accommodate 3 people. It had three separate beds in two floors with a lot of privacy for all occupants. Weirdly, the hotel didn't allow us to share that big, spacy room, and instead made us pay more and stay in 2 apart rooms. When we told them about this, again they didn't bother helping us out.

All went well until we moved the solid pine table to clear up some crumbs-the table collapsed. My new laptop and a cupful of coffee fell on the floor. when we looked under it the table leg was attached by masking tape. We informed the owner who was annoyed with us and said it was a very good table and we shouldn't have moved it. We explained it was dangerous and would injure a child if it fell on them. He continued to be annoyed and said we shouldn't have been cleaning up, and had no insight to the potential danger. We thought he would want to know so that he could get the table fixed. He made us feel as if we had done something wrong. We are uncomplaining and peaceful people and have never been spoken to like this before t a hotel. We wouldn't ever feel able to return. He also seemed annoyed that we hadn't hired his skis. We weren't aware that he had skis to hire out. Otherwise the location is great for the beginners ski area at Chapelle, which has a few runs. It can be quite an effort (without a car) to get onto the Portes du Soleil as you need to carefully look at the bus timetable. These don't run throughout the day. You tend to need to get the coach (1.5 euro) to get into the main ski resort of Chatel. A car is useful if staying here. We got to know the bus drivers who were really helpful. Its a peaceful resort with not much going on in the evenings and you need a car to get to a decent supermarket. They are very welcoming at the local bars and restaurants. It is a beautiful area. The staff are happy to order fresh bread for you each morning. There are some very nice friendly young staff working in le Joly.

All good here, very welcoming team of Dutch nationals run the place. The food is brilliant, real home cooked stuff. Its about 100 yards from Cret Beni chair lift which is good for a couple of days skiing before you head of the Chatel, Morzine etc.

One of our group had a food allergy and had meals and courses cooked just for her with not fuss or both but with care.
