It had been raining all day on our drive and we drove to this unique place and we were thrilled as it was the end of the street in a neighborhood on the lake. We rang the bell and a lovely staff person opened the door and we stepped into a very interesting place filled with memorabilia and artifacts. We were on the second floor with good windows and the bed was comfortable. The bathroom clean and small, the linens nice and the room was comfortable. We went to the outside garden that was set up for a cool glass of wine/beer and watch the water in the rain. The hotel did not serve dinner on our one night but did suggest places within walking distance. The breakfast was wonderful and we sat outside with pretty arrangements. We had very nice time talking to a lovely girl who was staffing the breakfast about the area and Germany in general. We wished we could have stayed here longer as the bar and the rooms for sitting were so inviting.
We loved walking on the lakeside edge and it was very nice even in the rain. We would return to this area and the hotel.

Booked Villa Barleben for two nights at 165,- EUR/night + 15,- EUR p.p. per breakfast over Easter 2018. Had room #5. Best view to Lake Constance. Very greatly driven hotel with lots of exquisite antiques. Great beds.
Excellent WiFi.
Excellent breakfast Served at table.
Would definitely choose to stay again and prefer Barleben towards a standard Hotel chain.

Helpful vote appreciated.

If you are lucky enough to get a room here, u will have a gem in the pocket.
Outstanding location, only a few rooms and not the average hotel. It is a small paradise in walking distance to the casino and the heart of the city.. It is right at the beautiful promenade.
Food is awesome and the garden is an outstanding place to relax and recover.

It is also a great spot for weddings - the only minus is the small space to dance.

Made a reservation as we were on an interrailtrip in southern Germany/ Switzerland.
Konstanz is always nice and the city is beautifully located and this hotel located on the northern shore of lake Constance seemed just right .

To make it short :
Location is great , but thehouse is crying for some maintenance ranging from new paint outside , doing the garden , cleaning in and out ( peculiar smell in reception area and rooms ) , you have to ring a bell to come in contact with someone.
No breakfast before 8 am, no staff after 9 pm

No feeling for service - and nearly rude language from staff .
Never ever again - stay away

In my worldwide travels I have never experienced anything like this before. The owner and the staff of this house run like properly were pompous and rude and had no consideration about guest comfort or needs. Upon arrival we were told that dinner finishes st 9pm. Following a walk by the water we rushed to get ready and turned up at 8:20pm only to be rudely dismissed by the owner and told that kitchen is already closed, while we could still see plenty of people eating/drinking on the tables. The owner even had the decency of asking if we were guests of the hotel to then tell us we should go across the toad to get dinner! It felt like we didn’t fit in his clientele of rich visitors and he was sending us away, having paid €280 for a night stay and breakfast! Furthermore, the property seems to be run more like a private house where the owner sets the rules with no consideration about the guests. We were told to park in the back yard, which could only take max 3 cars to then be asked to move our car because it was in their way as they were using the back door for laundry.
Utterly unacceptable pompous behaviour, the pompous owner with his Cocker-spaniel and his staff need to address their attitude to people because if it wasn’t for the guests paying their bills he will be nothing more than a scum bag!
Very disappointed and ruined our plans for a nice birthday dinner! He’ll be hearing from us in person!

Never before had we slept with a puma standing guard in front of our bedroom. Not that we needed extra protection in these peaceful surroundings, a few steps from the perfectly kept lake promenade just outside the historic town of Constance.
It was by mere chance that we came upon the Villa Barleben, idly looking for a place to spend two nights at the lakeside, our only guide a city map. Set in a lovely garden, this listed building from the 19th century seems to be a cross between a summer house and a hunting lodge. We had to ring a bell to gain access. How lucky that we were not discouraged!
We instantly fell in love with the puma and the room behind it, an eclectic mix of antiques and modern features, a palm tree, a private covered veranda where later we should sit and watch the grandiose spectacle of a thunderstorm over the lake.
En-suite shower and toilet were minuscule, the wash basin in the bedroom - building protection laws not allowing for major changes in and outside the house. But that did not bother us. We had the impression of staying in the house of cultivated, well-travelled and hospitable relatives.
After a perfectly quiet night we were served breakfast by our graceful hostess. There was no buffet, but all our wishes for fresh fruit, yoghurts, cheese, eggs and so on were instantly met. A very personal and attentive service indeed. We learnt that the hotel often caters for weddings and other family parties, so for individual travelers it is probably best to opt for a mid-week break. There are plenty of good restaurants in the old town of Constance within easy walking distance.

If you are looking for something completely different - this is your choise. Off the beaten track, 20 meters from the Bodensee, you will find this oasis. You will hear the bird songs, the boats blowing their whissels and the people chatting happily passing the hotel on the small walking path between the garden and the see. Only 8 rooms and a fantastic garden makes this place very special.

Do not expect the rooms to be high luxury. And do not be freightened over the animals stearing at you when you enter your room - or the hotel for that matter - hanging from the walls.

Design is a bit weird, old and new, cosy and sterile. Flat screens and bongo drums. But it all fits in a strange way.

For the traveller who is looking for something unusual - this is a great pick. Great and helpful staff (who speak good English), very nice food, great location and an athmosphere of being at someones house, creates a calming, restful experience.

Lake view rooms offer a superb view of the whole of the city of Constance. Day and night! No other accommodation is a match !!!!
The villa the hotel is situated in is as it was a lot of years ago. Stylish but not today’s style. Modern comfort was added carefully and sparsely.
The only acccompdation within walking distance to Ophelia restaurant.
Friendly staff. Some like it ....

Wonderful quirky boutique hotel circ 1870. Only 9 rooms so somewhere between a catered villa and a small hotel. Great food, personal service, wonderful garden. Beware if you don't like steps. Great location, less that 10 minutes walk to the old town. Bathing and other restaurants practically next door but still quiet and very relaxing.

We stayed here for a long weekend to celebrate my husband's birthday. This is a quirky, little hotel that is far away from corporate mass catering. The welcome was warm and friendly. We had a big room facing Lake Constance. The bed was huge and super comfortable. Everything felt very cozy. The only let down of the room was the somewhat outdated, very small bathroom, which only provided a shower with a shower curtain (which is one of my pet hates). But definitely not a deal breaker.

The best thing was breakfast in an amazing room. Rather than offering a buffet style where you help yourself two lovely ladies serve you breakfast on nice china. Eggs, differnt breads, cold cuts, cheese and fruit in abundance. A lovely way to start the day...
