The good: Friendly, clean, affordable, quiet, elevator, with a great location and excellent breakfast.

The neutral: The size of our room was normal for an average European hotel.

The bad: The mattress and pillows were a bit soft.

Overall we really enjoyed our stay. Highly recommended!

As we entered Konstanz and approached the Hotel Bilger Eck I wasn't quite sure what to think. What a pleasant surprise =)
The family that runs the hotel is very friendly, and professional in running their hotel. Our room was clean, comfortable, and I found traditional which I liked. There's something special about a family run hotel compared to chain hotels, and in this case. It was the warmth of the family running the hotel.
My favorite part of our stay was breakfast which was top notch.
I don't think in the entire trip we took through three countries we had as many options for breakfast as we did with the Bilger Eck.
Both my wife and I agreed that next time we visit Konstanz we will look to see if there is a room available at the Hotel Bilger Eck. What a nice stay.

Good things first, about this 3-star hotel: location is quite central, rooms are clean (if pretty tired, incl. remnants of smashed mosquito on the wallpaper), breakfast is 4 star, and the wireless works fine.

BUT: The 'economy double' (Rm33) must be the smallest hotel room I have stayed in, ever. The main bedroom area (with heavily slanted ceiling) is ~4.5 sq.m, the hallway <3 sq.m, and the bathroom exactly 2 sq.m – altogether <10 sq.m (<105 sq.ft), and thus significantly less than the 14 sq.m (151 sq ft) advertised on sites such as booking.com.

To match, the room is fitted with 'miniature furniture'. The desk measures 40x60 cm (1.3 x 2 ft). It accommodates the hard-wired kettle and tea (no coffee in our case) plus the pay-for drinking water (USD 4 for 0.5L / a pint) – so available desk space is none to speak of. The two matrasses are 70cm wide and – being squeezed into a tight corner between two walls – the bed near the wall is quite uncomfortable (you use <60cm (<2ft) of its width as you hit the wall to your side, and you get in/out via the foot end). Thanks to the bed being tucked under the low sloping ceiling, the usable length is <1.70m (<67”), so your feet dangle and easily hit the main light switch for the room that – for whatever reason – is positioned at the foot end just above the mattress.

There is a tiny window (<2ft) that faces a busy intersection with traffic day and night. Other inconsistencies, compared to the room description include the lack of a radio, alarm clock or iron.

In summary: there is no way this should be sold as a 3-star room, it is too small to serve as a double, and the cost of ~USD 120 simply is inappropriate.

The owner, when asked about the matter, responded that “travellers always find something to complain about, instead of appreciating the quality of our breakfast…”. Fair point – for a café or bistro. But not for a hotel, in particular when you are charged (USD 11) extra for having breakfast.

The room we had is just like the one shown in the photo, but the rooms are not nearly as nice. Maybe the photos were taken long ago. The rooms are small. The AC is nothing more than a loud, REALLY LOUD, portable unit that pumps out more humidity than cold air. Bathroom is tiny with no place to put your stuff. Wifi is free, but quite weak. Will never stay here again.

Hotel is clean, staff is friendly and the included breakfast was great both days. Only reason I could not go 5 circles and almost down to three was two things. I had a single room which was fine as long as you know what you are getting. A very basic room with a shower and the very clean toilet across the hall. The room, you can nearly reach across so be aware of that. The two things were the mattress sagged in the middle and appears to need to be replaced. The other thing that really got me was the hotel is advertised as air conditioned. I guess it is certain times of the year. I had a room that faced right into the afternoon sun and the room was rather warm even with the window open. The two ladies I asked said they could not give me the remote to the AC because it was the "wrong time of year" I am on a busy street with lots of light that is easily fixed by closing the window and lowering the shade but I cannot have the dang AC that is hanging on the wall.

Response from EstaHack, Leiter Front Office at Hotel Bilger Eck
Responded 10 Apr 2015
Dear Guest, thank you for your rating. We are very sorry that your stay was not completely how you expected it to be. Unfortunately we are only using the air-conditioning in our hotel in the the summer months. I just told the housekeeping to change the mattress in the room where you were staying. If you would have let us known before we surely could have given you another room. We are very sorry.

Very friendly and accommodating reception, rooms are well kept with all necessary amenities including a/c. 10 min walk through the park to old town, 25 min from train station or a few minutes by bus. Very good selection of breakfast items. Irish bar/restaurant on a first floor is added value. It was quite in our room despite bar being open very late.

When we booked this hotel we didn't realize that it was above a pub on a main street. Since it was very warm out we could have had a peaceful stay if we could have kept the air conditioning on all night but unfortunately it was turned off at midnight. The WiFi did not work very well. But on the plus side, the room was fine, breakfast was great and the location was good.

We had a very pleasant stay in Hotel Bilger Eck:
- super clean and comfortable room
- welcome card and chocolates upon arrival that provides a feeling of sincere welcome
- very good quality breakfast German style
- great location, conveniently located in 15 minutes walking distance to downtown with all shopping facilities
- nice Irish pub as part of the hotel

Overall great value for money in a super nice environment!

Thank you to the team and the nice lady owning that place!
