I stayed 4 nights with my mother. We had a nice room with a beautiful view. We were welcome with an apero with local specialties. We enjoyed the panorama from the restaurant where we had breakfast. Breakfast is awesome to have a great start in the day. It is convenient to have access to the spa area via a tunnel, even though it is for people who don’t mind walking up stairs. It is convenient to leave the skis in Belvedere hotel’s garage and have direct access to the bus shuttle that drives to the slopes in 5 min - beware the bus is very crowded in the morning. The staff is very nice, there were some coordination issues with Belvedere hotel but the hotel director and Maja, the hotel manager, did their best to make it good again and really spoiled us with lots of attentions. By the way it is possible to charge an electric car in the garage (15 chf per day). Do not miss all proposed activities in the region such as walking tours, musical concerts in various towns, visit of authentic villages such as Guarda and of course the wellness treatments (fantastic experience in the roman irish bath - book in advance) and skiing in beautiful scenaries. We will be back !

We booked the GuardaVal on the same weekend as we were to hike up to the Lischana Hütte. Talk about going from rustic and sparse to having anything and everything at your fingertips.

From the first moment we walked through the front door (dirty and stinky from hiking in the heat), we were warmly welcomed, offered a welcome drink and given a short orientation about the hotel and accompanying services (which includes many... lift tickets, free public transport, free entry to the local mineral baths and more).

Our room was beautiful and had an amazing view to the south and the mountains.

Frankly, they have turned service into an art. I had mentioned in an email that it was our anniversary and because of that, they offered us a free drink with dinner and more.

Simply put... there's no question that we'll be staying at the GuardaVal again in the future.

This was the second time we visited the hotel (last time was two years ago) and we enjoyed again our stay at the GuardaVal. Also this time we experienced very friendly services and excellent food at the hotel restaurant.
Twice we took the possibility to change and we also liked the hotel Thai restaurant very much.
Same like two years ago, the hotel package includes guided excursion with the snowshoes... we really enjoyed our snowshoe walks with the two excellent guides (Andrea and Janet).

The hotel sits in the old part of Scuol in an ancient building and this is a nice thing.
However the restructuring of the interior spaces made the structure quite anonymous. In spite of the restructuring process no elevator has been built as well as no air conditioning system: Scuol is 1200 meters high, not 1400 as the person at the reception told us, and the meter on the window of our room marked a 39.2 C as maximal temperature reached during our stay. This is hardly acceptable in a 4 star hotels that charged 760 CHF for a small double room for 2 nights.
Such an hotel should have at least a nice swimming pool. In reality the pool is available but is a public pool where the number of people present and the round shape of the two main pools render swimming all but impossible. Last but not least: the pool can be reached after a 500-600 meter (and 85 steps) walk.
On the positive side, the quality of some of the breakfast food (smoked saibling, cheeses) was good.

Thank you for your stay at the Engadiner Boutique-Hotel GuardaVal and for your feedback. We regret not having met your expectations and your taste. We strongly believe in our authentic product with lots of included services. For wellness we offer a free spa area with sauna and steam bath in the hotel. The passage to the mineral bath might be a bit of a walk, but very convenient as the bath can be reached in the bathrobe. The Engadin Bad Scuol, where our guest has free access to, offers 13’000 sqm of bathing and sauna area. Air conditioning is not usually necessary at the altitude of Scuol. This summer, however, we had very high temperatures for our area on a few days. But 39°C has never been reached in our area. We assume that the thermometer was exposed to direct sunlight, which is why it indicated this high temperature. We would like to sincerely apologise for the misinformation and the inconveniences. Kind regards René Stoye Host / Site Manager Scuol

The Guardaval hotel was recommended to me by a work colleague. I was looking for somewhere new to show my parents when they were over in Switzerland, so I took a chance on the Guardaval and Scuol.

Wow! I'm amazed Scuol itself isn't better known. It was only three hours by car from Zurich, and I think it would also have been a fairly straightforward journey by train too.

But for us the highlight was the hotel itself. Absolutely top quality management and staff, terrific meals (both breakfast and evening) and really atmospheric rooms. Somehow they've managed a relaxing and stylish blend of the very old (show me two walls that meet at 90 degrees) with the modern, such as their trendy bar area.

And waking up in the morning and seeing the breathtaking view across the valley is simply stunning.

We can't wait to go back!

We spent a week at the Guardaval during August 2011 and found this to be one of the best hotels we have visited in Switzerland. Although it is a little more expensive than other hotels, it is definitely a cut above and lived up to the Trip Advisor reviews.

All staff members were very helpful and prepared to go out of their way to provide exceptional service. Nothing was too much bother - for example they ensured that the newspaper delivered to our room each day was an English paper, and even made sure we had Euros when they knew we were doing a hike that crossed into Italy.

Our room was at the top of the hotel and had floor to ceiling windows with spectacular views of the mountains. The room was decorated in modern style with excellent quality bedding - especially the feather pillows. The bathroom was newly rennovated and we had a very useable balcony on which to enjoy the mountain views. The hotel also has a lovely terrace, bar and cosy spa.

The highlight of the hotel however was the dinners included in our half board package. These were made with the highest quality ingredients and were a true work of art.

Scuol itself is a hidden gem to which we plan to return. There is excellent hiking for all levels and the opportunity to access Italy and Austria. We also recommend the Roman Irish spa experience at the Engadina Spa. It my be expensive, but this will leave you feeling truly relaxed and pampered.

I had booked one room for 2 nights on the Guarda Val hotel website but was charged double for the first night. The reception told me that by my alleged double-click on the reservation, 2 single rooms for 2 nights had been reserved in my name instead of only 1 for 2 nights as I had intended. Note that I received no written proof of my alleged double reservation, since I only received from the hotel 1 email with 1 confirmation number prior to my arrival, nor was I subsequently given by the hotel staff any document showing a double reservation. Note also -as confirmed by the hotel manager- that the hotel was not fully booked on August 25th, therefore my double reservation for that night did not prevent other clients to reserve at the hotel. However the hotel manager maintained that even if the hotel was not full on August 25th double clicking was 100% my mistake, that the conditions were clearly specified on the website and that I had to pay a cancellation penalty 80% of the price for 1 night for my alleged booking mistake. The receptionist told me that I was lucky they could re-sell the 2nd night of my alleged double booking (August 26th, bike marathon in Scuol) so I should be grateful. A very unpleasant argument ensued in the morning after the first night with the unfriendly and extremely rigid hotel manager on what I do consider an unfair treatment and a rip-off. The hotel manager tone in addressing me was extremely mistrustful, dismissive and aggressive. Therefore I saw no other choice than to cut my vacation short: I ended-up checking-out immediately after the first night. In conclusion the Hotel Guarda Val ended up making a very good deal as I left after only 1 night having been charged for 3 nights!

Also, when checking in my room on August 25th ( a modest dwelling overlooking a parking lot!) I found blood stains on the bathroom floor and only after my complaint to a surprised receptionist, the floor was cleaned with apologies. At least they apologised, but it was certainly not the level of cleanliness one would expect from a "luxury" hotel as it is advertised.
It is unfortunate as I have been vacationing in Scuol for the last four years, staying at other nice hotels without any problems, but this experience ruined it for me. I don't think that treating clients in this manner is going to develop (and maintain) a good hotel business in the long run, but evidently the Guarda Val hotel manager thinks otherwise. Good luck.

We regret that your stay at the GuardaVal has not been satisfying and thank you for your honest evaluation. We always try to resell a room as fast as possible to avoid any cancellation costs for our guests, which is not very easy at the same day. As we couldn’t predict that this was a double booking, we kept the room reserved for you. Kind regards Jürgen Walch Host

From the moment we were picked up at the train station until our departure we could feel more like royalty. The hotel is great and above all its staff is top notch.

We had room 51 which was really spacious and well appointed. We were there for a wedding in September and could also try their F&B services. What a delight.

Their beds are the best I've had the chance to experience. If any one reads that review, what is the brand of their pillows ???????

The staff was extremly friendly and helpful and this is a large plus for this hotel. The rooms were perhaps not luxurious but the view is quite amazing if you have mountain view and a balcony. The breakfast was ok and the dining room has a nice mountain view. The hotel is connected to a spa through an underground passage. The spa is nice and relatively big with a number of different pools - although not very cozy or luxurious - but we did not try the saunas at all as kids were not allowed (kids allowed in pools after 11 am).

I took my partner here for a romantic birthday weekend. I chose it primarily based on the reviews here and I must confess to being disappointed with the overall experience. Our first impression was not good - we waited 20 minutes at the train station to be picked up as agreed and eventually had to call the hotel to be collected. The hotel itself is quite a nice building but it feels quite claustrophobic with no fewer that 3 (including one active building site which was a most unwelcome surprise) new buildings built in close proximity. While the terrasse and rooms still have reasonable views of the mountains, I certainly would not class them as anything special ..... indeed, there are certainly better value hotels in Scuol with nicer views of the mountains.
The service was fine but not at the level that I would expect for a 4 star hotel (especially one thats clearly trying to attain 5 star level given the prices). For example - the room has a note saying that the supplied carafe will be filled with water upon your arrival .... if you ask ..... I personally would expect this to happen automatically as part of the check in!
The hotel has its own sauna and spa(?) which we did not use. Instead, we chose to use the nearby Bad Scuol facility which we very much enjoyed. The price of this facility (excluding the Romische-Irisches Bad) is included in the room and the hotel is connected (through a somewhat mazy passage) directly to the Bad.
The highlight of the hotel is clearly the restaurant which offered 3-4-5 course menus. The food was of superb quality and beautifully presented. Having said that, I was again irked to be charged extra for water and tea / coffee ..... it seemed a little petty when paying almost CHF 500 per night on average for each of the 3 nights we stayed there!

Overall, we had an enjoyable experience in Scuol but we honestly feel that there are better value hotels for this price.

We thank you very much for your positive valuation about our restaurant and kitchen and for our included services like the Engadin Bad Scuol. Unfortunately the rooms in our 400 years old Engadine house are very charming but not the biggest. We do offer some extra large rooms and suites at the GuardaVal who might correspond more to the modern demands. Nevertheless we would be pleased to welcome you again someday to convince you of our service and our infrastructure. Jürgen Walch Host
