You really feel on top of the world at Taverna Lusitana! The accommodations were very comfortable and the breakfast was awesome. My only regret is that we didn't stay longer. We had cocktails on the deck while we enjoyed the beautiful view. FYI- You must park your car and then walk up the hill to the Inn. If you are... More

In a village such as Monsanto, it is all about the location more than the accommodation. I think we could have stayed in a tent and still have found it truly amazing. That said, Lusitana Taverna was much more comfortable than a tent. The room was of a medium size with two single beds pushed together to make the double... More

Hard to rate without the location - both the village of Monsanto and the location within Monsanto - dominating the memory. But that is how Monsanto is. A picture postcard place well off the usual tourist trail that deserves so more attention but you kind of hope it doesn't get it, so it's not spoiled. The accommodation is very basic... More

This review is long overdue. I have been coming to Monsanto and staying regularly at the Taverna for over two years now, and can't put into words what a wonderful business this is. Owners Joao and Helena and their adorable son Afonso are so kind and welcoming. The rooms (I have stayed in both) are cozy and comfortable and the... More

Most definitely a great place to go back to. The setting, the comfortable rooms and welcoming host make this a great place to stop. Highly recommended. We climbed to the Castle again as the views are really breath-taking (as is the climb!). Bear in mind this is up a steep hill but so worth it.

A great little taverna at Monsanto. A good climb from the car park but we had downsized to get two days cloths into our rucksack. Room was warm and clean and the food rustic but excellent value. We climbed up to the castle and all spent a day touring from our little eyrie. What makes it special is the taverna... More

We chose the inland route on our road trip Lisbon to Porto so to experience Portugal's regional produce, cork plantations and visit this most fascinating medieval village - and it was all we thought it would be! It is a destination in itself as is Taverna Lusitana. The tiny bar / cafe has a delightful ambiance and our host could... More

As others have said, this place is tucked away and only accessed via foot or bike. It is well worth it! The rooms are very clean and comfortable. We stayed in the room to the right of the restaurant. It is a beautiful view from the door and has the new and original stone walls mixed in. Breakfast was simple... More

Monsanto should definitely be one of your destinations in Portugal, but be prepared to have a hell of a time finding a parking space (not to mention navigating and getting around on the very narrow streets) and then carrying your luggage up steep roads. Once you arrive and most of the tourists are gone (there aren't really that many, though),... More

hello yes, you're right! 1- Monsanto is a medieval hilltop village, to walk not to drive. the car doesnt come to the place, you have to carry the luggage by hand. 2- we are not an 5* hotel, just normal bed and breakfast 3- we asked if you wish a clean in the room after the 1st night but you... What a village, and Taverna just captures the brilliant setting so well. It is located higher than the other residences so it is a long haul up from where you park your car but believe me, just to sit on the terrace restaurant, sip a glass of wine or a beer, and watch the sunset - it doesn't get any...
