I would have given a 1 if it hadn’t been for the friendly manner the male staff member had when we briefly visited the pub today.

Firstly your menu has allergen codes (without a key) and for dishes ie the fish & chips and burger from the bar menu gluten code was missing and had we taken it for granted you had done it correctly we would have fed our children gluten.

The friendly male member of staff told us food wasn’t his thing so he would ask the chef what had gluten in.

The Covid restrictions are new and alien to staff and customers and viewed differently in every establishment, but you handed us a used paper menu, then took the menu to the chef to mark up the non gluten dishes then handed it back. The menu had good stains on

When we arrived we were marched through the bar past other customers when you could have taken us to the garden through the car park, the track and trace piece of paper survey is against guidelines where people’s data should be taken securely.

Your staff looked like it was their first day as 2 lots of drinks came into the garden and were given to the wrong table.

We tried to order a meal after all of that and your food menu in the app wasn’t working.
We left!

I hope you sort it out as as your pub looks a great venue.

We stayed in room 9, which (although a little dark) was beautifully furnished, with the highlight being the bathroom, containing a fantastic walk in shower and stand alone bath.

The breakfast was lovely, with the staff happy for us to pick and choose items from the breakfast menu, and the chef hitting the gold standard in regards to poaching an egg! The bar was well stocks with wine, beer and a massive selection of gins, and the outdoor area 'winter wonderland' was a great space, providing a covered, heated and comfortable outdoor area for anyone who wishes to dine with another household during the current situation.

The staff were friendly and helpful throughout, I would definitely stay here again.

Based on experience alone, this would be a 3 star review. However, it gets an extra star due to the professionalism shown by both Vicky and Sev when resolving our complaint. The room itself was impractical as it was on the top floor and in the eaves, so no flat ceiling. Therefore, a shower would not fit in the bathroom - only a bath with a hand held shower and I had to stoop to use it (I’m only 5’ 1” so not normally a problem). Also no full length mirror. However, it was probably one of the most comfortable beds I’ve ever slept on. Also nice to have fresh ground coffee in the room rather than instant, and breakfast was excellent. However, our complaint was not about the room, but the restaurant. We ordered and paid using the QR code system and we’re brought cutlery and drinks promptly. We then waited, and waited. We then noticed that two tables who ordered after us received their main courses, but after nearly an hour, we still had no starters. Just as we were about to complain, one of the staff noticed and came over to apologise. By this time, we had got through the two gin and tonics and bottle of wine, so had to order another bottle of wine to go with the food, which we wouldn’t normally do. The starters finally arrived. Mussels were excellent. However, the main course (£16 burger and chips) was disappointing - tiny burger and not overly hot. However, we were starving, so ate it. The restaurant was obviously having a bad night, as I noticed other tables complaining to Vicky. As she seemed to be handling complaints professionally, we added our feedback. She took it all on the chin and was very apologetic, offering free desserts. However, we were beyond food at this point, so declined and requested that our room rate was reduced. She said she would speak to the manager and see what she could do. She also reassured us that she was working in the morning. As we were about to go to our room, Sev, the manager approached us and personally apologised. A nice touch and very professional. A reasonable reduction was taken from our bill when we checked out. Although I probably wouldn’t stay here again, I would come for drinks or lunch when it is less busy. However, I commend both Vicky and Sev for their complaint handling skills and customer service.

I know North Norfolk is very busy at the moment, but business essex in general seem to have forgotten to welcome guests, perhaps they feel they don’t need to anymore.
The Ship is a case in point, staying here for a couple of nights, as yet no one has actually said welcome ( and this is the hospitality business) , but they have pointed out the rules a few times.
We had intended to eat here on the evening of our arrival, but once I saw the incredibly over engineered and laborious system they have introduced we decided not to even bother, even as residents it’s in impossible to even order a coffee and have it put on your room, it has to go through an app that I tried and wouldn’t load.
The room is large and comfortable, yes it is pretty tired and scruffy , but that’s not an issue, however the room was uncomfortably warm, even with windows wide open. Also once they are open the traffic noise becomes an issue.
I think I could have forgiven these issues, or at least ignored them, if the place was at least welcoming, but I am afraid we won’t be back, there are plenty of other places along the coast and we will return to them.

The Hotel was chosen for 2 nights because it was close to Royal North Devon GC and after playing we could could eat and have a drink at the Hotel without driving. We were told that the last orders in the restaurant would be early and we agreed to eat near Cromer and would not get to the Hotel until 9pm.
Imagine our surprise at 9 pm to be met by someone at the Hotel who said he was just shutting up and to handed our keys and told that we could have a drink in our rooms.
When challenged the person then said that we could have one drink in the bar but then he was locking up and this in spite of the fact that there were several young people still being served in the bar who it seemed were his friends.

This is not the way that any "Hotel" should treat paying guests and I certainly do not expect to be told when to "go to my room".

It was too late for us to make other arrangements and so stayed there anyway and next morning the other staff seemed very aware of the "manager's" attitude and were sympathetic.
No apology was forthcoming.
The Chaplin Group should be aware of the damage this high-handed attitude will have on their investment and it is certainly not a "Hotel" in any sense.

NEVER AGAIN !!!!!!

Firstly, we are big fans of the Ship Hotel and this was our 5th visit in 4 years. Normally the hotel is 5 stars no problem. This visit however is only 2. Having arrived on Monday 17th, looking forwards to dining in the restaurant, which is half the pleasure in staying at the place only to be told the restaurant was fully booked both nights of our stay but we could "take our chances" on getting a table at some point that evening in the bar or in the garden. It is not a cheap place to stay, but to be told this simply isn't good enough, or customer focused. The staff are all helpful, friendly and work hard to please. Could they not simply have sent an email in advance asking if we would like to dine in the restaurant? In past visits we were automatically booked into the restaurant for dinner. I know its unprecedented times with Covid, but this simply hasn't been thought through and priority surely should be given to paying guests...really disappointed.

We’ve had quite a few great meals at the Ship this summer. They’ve developed an apt ordering system, in line with social distancing and keeping people safe etc. Took me a few minutes to work it out initially..... but hey ! The system works and it gives us the confidence to eat out more knowing that the team there are really on top of the corona guide lines etc. It would great if more restaurants adopted something similar - well done .

The Ship has been on my list for a long while to visit and to stay in the future.
Felt at home and cozy the minute I walked in the door. Big fan of Maids Head ( their sister Hotel) Enjoy a very tasty Roast Beef lunch, beautifully presented , very enjoyable. ( I would have like a few more veg, but at £16 wasn’t going to pay for extra side of veg ) Well worth the £16 we had 4 clean plates. Met the delightful Matthew who even though he was day off and had popped in, took the time out to show me some of the bedrooms as we will definitely be staying in the future. Certainly a coastal gem worth a visit by anyone. Will be back to try more food and to stay over. In room 5 ... fifty shades 🤣😂

Spent Saturday night here with husband and dog. Dinner, bed and breakfast deal. Lovely room, very spacious and also big bathroom with free standing bath. Bed and bowl provided for the dog along with some tasty treats. Good choice of teas and fresh ground coffee. Had a lovely meal in the bar/ restaurant, very relaxed and excellent service. Particularly enjoyed the breakfast, really good choice of cereals including home made granola, fresh fruit, croissants etc. Had the vegetarian cooked breakfast which was delicious, beautifully cooked and served. Were served by a lovely waitress, very friendly and helpful. Not cheap but felt it was good value, and a good location close to huge sandy beaches. Would visit again!

Have been before and were very impressed with the food so was slightly disappointed on this occasion. Prices for meals seemed very expensive, especially for the Scampi. The Sea bass with bombay potato was delicious however the hummus, olive starter was not great, lots of pitta but about a teaspoon of hummus and it was bland and certainly didn't taste of hummus. I would've complained under normal circumstances but did not feel it appropriate to engage in conversation when staff were not wearing masks. I think the social distancing could have been improved. We ate in the Map room and were far too close to the table next to us. There was only one foot between my chair and the person on the neighbouring table, which is not within the guidelines. We would have felt safer if the distance had been at least a metre and if staff had worn masks. Despite that we did have a pleasant evening and also got to grips with the app eventually!

Hi, there is no lift, steep stairs to access the bedrooms on the first floor.. If you are looking for ground floor accessible rooms in that area I would be happy to assist you as have stayed in some other wonderful places that are low level rooms
