This is a really well managed, superb small hotel with the added bonus of being very doggy friendly. The hotel has undergone a recent extensive refurbishment using high quality décor and is maintained to a very high standard. All areas are very clean with the rooms and bed being of a very generous size.
We ate at the hotel all evenings and including breakfast, there is a good choice of cuisine and is of a very high quality and reasonably priced. Very welcoming, efficient and friendly staff throughout and they accommodated our doggy really well (he was a very happy doggy here and adored his breakfast sausage!).

Interesting strong negative comment made earlier about the 2 x Chihuahuas being on the furniture …. we visited at the same time and duration as these guests and the dog owners were a courteous couple and did not have the tiny dogs on the furniture, we only ever saw them on their laps and even then placed on a coat on their laps, never did we see paws touch the upholstery.

The hotel is located within walking easy distance of the delightful town of Keswick and regular bus services are available if you have tired legs, after all, the walks available around the hotel are wonderful.
A sister pub called the Coledale Inn is a short walk from The Ruddings and has a good range of drinks and a very kind and helpful barman (with interesting hair) if you fancy a nice short stroll from the hotel.
All-in-all, an extremely good small hotel situated in an excellent location with excellent food at an affordable price, we are already planning when we can go back!

We stayed here for a long weekend last early August. As well as being externally visually stunning, the interior layout and decor were first class. Very roomy and fresh, it was a delight staying there, it felt very homely and relaxing. I was blown away with the rooms we were given for the duration of our stay. It is very close to both Portinscale and Keswick, only minutes away. The staff were great, friendly and helpful.

Fabulous stylish newly refurbished hotel. Room was lovely and bed very comfortable. Great breakfast, really enjoyed the bircher muesli chia pots.
I was travelling alone with my Border Terrier and we were made to feel very welcome and looked after.
Unfortunately the weather was very wet during my stay but having such a lovely hotel to come back to after long wet walks was a treat.
I really liked the outdoor sink and towels provided for cleaning up a wet muddy dog!
Hope to visit again!

We really enjoyed our stay. They’ve done a fantastic job of the renovations both inside and out. Our room was spacious and beautifully decorated. They’re well equipped for doggy guests and our little dog was made very welcome. All the staff we encountered were very friendly and seemed happy to engage in some light conversation. The lady from Canada was especially nice. The breakfast was lovely and we’d highly recommend the eggs Benedict. We had our evening meal here one night and there were a couple of minor mistakes made with it but we enjoyed the meal overall and it didn’t make our stay any less enjoyable. We hope to return very soon and hopefully have better weather.

Had heard people expressing differing views on the food since the Ruddings reopened after a major rebuild, so decided to try it out for a mid week dinner. On arrival liked the interior design, which was a good start. Evening menu covers most tastes and a wide range of prices. Food was nicely presented and well cooked. Good flavours. Starters were a good size and did not have room for a dessert. Staff friendly.
For Keswick had no trouble with the prices. Taking into account interior design, presentation and cooking of the food, staff etc thought it was very good value for money. Have recommended to friends and will be back

The most striking aspect of our stay at the Ruddings was that no one made us feel welcome or seemed interested in us. Staff hardly ever said hello to us and we were asked just once how our day had been. On the one occasion where I tried to engage a staff member in a more meaningful conversation, a more senior staff member cut across us and told that staff member that there were other things that needed doing. Now while that may have been true, there are ways of communicating things that do not alienate your guests. We also encountered the following message in our room which read “ Please do not take the mugs home or you will be charged”. It’s worth saying that I haven’t come across such a hostile message in any of the numerous hotels I have stayed in around the world. However, it just crystallised the way we were already feeling about the way we had been received in this hotel. Just to show that this isn’t intended to be just a negative review for the sake of it ,it also needs to be said that the breakfast was fine and our room was very nice. However, it is always the staff that give the hotel its character and in this case there is lots of room for improvement.

We have just spent the last 4 days at The Ruddings and from walking into the hotel we just kept saying wow, it is beautiful from the lighting to the wallpaper the furnishings are of the best quality. Our room was so comfortable and dog friendly which our little dog felt very much at home all the staff where friendly nothing was a bother. The food was amazing the beef cheek suit pie was to die for. We will definitely be returning for another stay.

My wife and I called at the hotel for Sunday dinner and what a great experience
The roast beef dinner was without doubt one of the best we have had.
The premises are amazing .... greeted by a log burner and an amazing array of beers and wines. The interior designs were first class complimented by nice fixtures
And last but not least the staff.
Anyone who is considering opening a bar, restaurant or hotel should pay a visit here and see how customer should be looked after . First class and thanks to everyone who we met and those in the background for making our visit so special.
We will certainly return when in the area.
Messers Mawdsley please thank the staff on my behalf

First impressions were Wow! The refurbishment is amazing. Clearly no expense spared by Geoff & team you’ve made a fabulous job, pure quality, luxury & comfort.
We stayed for 2 nights and received a very warm welcome on arrival quick check in and explanation of the hotel/facilities & restaurant etc.

Beautiful room (no 14) spacious tasteful decor & soft furnishings, very comfortable bed and pillows! Everything we needed.

We ate in the restaurant the first evening the food was just delicious, cooked to perfection, well presented.

Breakfast was excellent the breakfast pots with raspberries on top were just Wow!! Full English delicious, Avocado on sour dough with chorizo was my favourite! Great selection of cereals & other breakfast items. Absolutely delightful.

Thank you to all the staff for their warm welcome and looking after us so well. It was great to see some old faces again.
With such a splendid stylish hotel with great staff proving such professional customer service you will be busy always I’m sure!!!
Can’t wait to return see you soon x

Perfect in every sense from the decor, food and staff. Nothing is too much trouble. Decorated and furnished to the highest standard. Dogs are treated like the guests they are and they get a sausage at breakfast. Will definitely be coming back
