Beautiful location with excellent food. The view from the dining room over the hills is lovely. My husband and I also stayed overnight in one of their lovely guest rooms - to be recommended as it means you can enjoy some of their extensive wine list. Would certainly return.

Our 2nd time here, this time to celebrate my wife's special birthday. Katherine and her team did not disappoint. We received a very warm welcome, tea and coffee on arrival and when we were ready, we were shown our room. Our meal in the evening was absolutely amazing and was made better when the chefs came to your table to explain the source and preparation of the dish served. The excellent food continued with a varied choice of breakfast with was presented beautifully. Michelin food at affordable prices. It is an absolutely fabulous place to celebrate something special Many thanks to Kath and her team.....and we will be back!

We arrived on a cold blustery day for lunch and we were welcomed warmly. After being shown to a delightful table with a view of snowcapped hills and red squirrels running past on a patio, we began our meal. From beginning to end we enjoyed course after course of loveliness. The food was exquisite and well balanced. There was enough space between courses to allow the appetite to settle and enjoy every plate. The service was immaculate and especially appreciated the chefs coming to the table to explain a course. Probably one of the best meals of my life. This is a culinary experience not a place to get filled up when hungry. We arrived at 12.20pm and left after 3pm. Thoroughly enjoyable. Need I say more.

Superb second visit for lunch at The Cottage in the Wood. As friendly as last time and, of course, faultless food especially the pasta course - absolutely sublime. Pity we live so far away. Good luck Jack and Beth. Please don't lose the friendly vibes!

Where to begin? My fiancé and I were given vouchers as an engagement gift last year and it was worth the wait to use them! The tasting menu was out of this world, the flavours were phenomenal, the atmosphere was lovely and the staff were so polite and friendly. It is always a lovely surprise when extra bread is served! The staff even noted on our booking form my fiancés distaste for mushrooms and substituted an entire course which i felt was a lovely gesture. Other simple food related things we enjoyed were the cake and coffee on arrival. The breakfast the morning after was outstanding. I have never had porridge as smooth and flavoursome as i had that morning, and the french toast was like eating clouds topped with caramelised banana! We stayed in the Mountain View room which gave us beautiful views across to Skiddaw and the room was warm, stocked with a lovely array of biscuits/teas/coffees. The bed was so comfy that we didnt want to check out at 11am! Overall the experience was something I would love to do again and compliments have to be paid to the staff for their friendly attitude and general small talk! We celebrated our engagement in style, in a gorgeous, romantic location and would 100% return in the future

We had a relaxing one night stay at the Cottage in the Wood and can heartily recommend it. The clue is in the name, but the conversion has been tastefully and skilfully carried out, with the addition of the conservatory. On arrival we were treated to tea and almond cake. Dinner was the delicious seven course tasting menu, but we were offered appetisers prior to dinner and an 'amuse bouche' between courses. Service was quietly efficient and unobtrusive. The bedroom we had was spotlessly clean, had everything we needed, with ensuite shower. A highlight was taking breakfast the following morning watching the red squirrels from the conservatory. The standard of the breakfast fare was exemplary. It is a lovely spot with walking in Whinlatter Forest from the hotel - a treat in itself.

Enjoyed the tasting menu, some very good wines, a very comfortable night's stay, a superb breakfast what more could you ask for alongside some brilliant scenery, red squirrels feasting outside whilst you eat your breakfast and then a twelve mile walk through a beautiful forest...oh... and the owners and staff are so friendly and helpful and the service is first class.

We spent a night at The Cottage in the Wood having last visited over 10 years ago. The place has a relaxed, intimate feel about it. The hosts (who live on site) were welcoming and attentive throughout and you feel more like house guests than hotel guests. We had the tasting menu which was excellent. We didn't opt for the paired wines, but ordered a few glasses from the paired list as we went along, which worked well for us. Breakfast was lovely, great quality produce and special dietary requirements are accommodated well for both breakfast and dinner. We stayed in the garden suite which was very private and had an amazing wet room. Parts of the room could do with a little updating and I would suggest the owners change the large green light by the exit as it shone rather brightly through the night. These are small things which didn't detract from an overall great experience. If visiting for just one night we would recommend lunch at Bassenthwaite Lake Station - amazing ! and a tour of The Lakes Distillery. Both are a short drive away.

A leisurely drive up through the mountainous forest of Whinlatter, just ten minutes from nearby Keswick, brought us to the very pretty and inviting 'Cottage in the Woods' where we were very warmly greeted and taken to our very comfortable, well-appointed and quiet room and offered complementary tea and slices of delicious home-baked Almond cake which set our taste buds tingling for the meal to come. The dining room looks out over a magnificent vista of Lake District peaks, - even in the mist and slightly rainy time of our visit, and there were also chances to spot red squirrels and various birds flocking to the feeders in the grounds of the Cottage. My wife is a pescatarian/vegetarian by preference but that provided no problem to this long Michelin-starred kitchen and a separate menu providing required substitution was presented prior to the meal without fuss. The seven course meal contained food that was simply fabulous. Every tasty morsel on both our plates , using local ingredients, was to savour and relish and the wine flight and small vineyard champagne from organic and bio-dynamic growers was perfectly chosen to enhance the food and served with a loving description by the long-standing and very knowledgeable Sommelier. A truly great meal follwed by a comfortable night's sleep and then a superb breakfast with a fluffy mushroom omelette brimming with wild mushrooms and well up to the previous night's feast. Very good value for money and a place we hope to revisit as soon as we can!! Thanks to all at the Cottage for a delightful stay at fairly short notice!
