Came for a birthday weekend. Such a warm welcome when we arrived - from the staff and the lovely log burner !! Stayed in the Garden Room which was sumptuous. Finished to really high modern standard (in lovely contrast to the age of the main building being a 17th Century coaching inn!!). Lovely wetroom with underfloor heating. Very secluded, warm & tranquil. Walking from there to dinner, you appreciate the location being so dark (no streetlights) and peaceful. Imagine it would be a walker's paradise. The food was excellent. Beautifully presented, nice small portions that were just packed with flavour and texture. As someone with bowel disease, when I can eat, I really appreciate my food but some of these 8 course tasting menus are just too much for me. The Cumbria Menu (with themed courses for stream, hedgerow, etc) was the perfect amount for me and thoroughly recommend the wine pairing. The sommelier was so knowledgeable, and engaging in what he was describing. Very interesting background & the wines were all superb and really complimented the courses !! The breakfast was also lovely. Nice to sit facing the woodland, watching the birds flit round the bird feeders, and even a pheasant outside our window !! I felt thoroughly pampered, and that the staff were really bothered and proud of what they have built up (not just going through the motions). We go to a lot of 'restaurant with rooms'/ Michelin starred places, and our favourites have always been the ones with laid-back charm, no stuffiness or pomp, and this Cottage ranks right up there as a favourite. My only negative was dashing away without getting the chance to explore the surroundings, but that gives us even more reason to return. Many thanks for a wonderful stay !!

We stayed for 2 nights mid week just after they had re-opened and you know what you just wouldn't know that they had been shut during the lockdown because everything felt normal and of course very safe. OK you had to give specific times for checking in and dining in the evening and at breakfast but so what! It was all so controlled and for someone that has been shielding for 4 months I felt very nervous about driving 2.5Hrs and staying in a bed that wasnt my own but I had no need to worry. The room was deep cleaned before we got into it and the room wasnt entered during our stay apart from ourselves. The staff numbers were reduced for obvious reasons but they coped with only the residents being able to dine in the restaurant and at breakfast. Special mention to Kath, Monica and Irwin for their attentiveness at both dinner and breakfast. Despite having to wear masks they still spoke to us during our stay and again we felt so safe. We had the TreeTops room as it was away from the other rooms in the cottage so that we didnt have to pass others on the corridor. It is a lovely room although watch out for the low beams :-) They do have another room which is situated under the restaurant area and has its own entrance but that wasnt available for out stay so maybe next time. Now food wise - WOW! We have been to some top restaurants before and this is right up there with them all. The tasting menu was delightful on our first evening but we were just as delighted with the ala carte menu on the second night and decided to split each of the main courses so we could try a bit of both and the staff even split the courses onto separate plates for us which made the meal last a lot longer for us as we enjoy the experience for fine food. I had the wine pairing with the tasting menu and it was very interesting and Irwin was very helpful with his advice throughout. I was also pleasantly surprised that they dont mark up the wine that much when comapred to other Michelin starred restaurants which is quite refreshing. Breakfasts were sublime and I must recommend the salmon and scrambled eggs! These are the finest scrambled eggs I have tasted ever! The cottage is in such a lovely quiet spot but with a B road outside its easy to get around to various towns and lakes then getting back to the peacefulness of the cottage with its abundance of wild life and especially the red squirels. The whole experience was delightful and one we will be looking to repeat in the future. Stay safe everyone !

We booked an overnight stay and dinner package at The Cottage in the Wood as a 40th birthday treat. Considering the restaurant has a Michelin star, we felt that the cost of the room and dinner package (which also includes breakfast) was very reasonable and our experience at The Cottage in the Wood certainly delivered.

The rooms are simply and tastefully decorated and have all of the amenities that you need. The restaurant with rooms itself similarly so, everything is clean and comfortable but not fussy, and when you see the views that they have you can understand why they don't want or need the decor to pull focus. The view of Skiddaw from the restaurant and terrace is breathtaking.

The food was superb; we opted for the tasting menu - and they did a vegan tasting menu for me with advance notice - and every course was excellent. Dishes are kept simple, only four or five ingredients treated with care and respect to make the most of the fresh produce that they use. A particular standout was roasted hen of the woods mushrooms with fermented fennel and cabbage. Absolutely divine and great to see so much thought going into their vegan dishes, which all closely resembled by partner's meat and fish based menu. The drinks were excellent too, some lovely wines and cocktails, which were very reasonably priced given the quality on offer and the calibre of the restaurant.

Service was brilliant, Kath and her team couldn't do enough for us and we were made to feel very welcome from the moment we arrived until the moment we left. As a birthday treat it was absolutely perfect.

Booked for lunch, very good social distancing and cleaning routines etc.staff were attentive, friendly and knowledgeable without being intrusive. We had a table in what looked like a conservatory area overlooking the forest with views (even on a dull / drizzly day) to the mountains - fabulous, plenty of wild life including the visit from a red squirrel. Anyway back to the food. we opted for the 5 course lunch tasting menu (£55) but could easily have eaten any course from the set ala carte lunch menu (£40). All courses were delicious and beautifully presented, my favourite was the hoggett closely followed by the lemon pre dessert. we didn't have the wines to match (driving unfortunately ) but i had a glass of the Romanian red and it was very nice and decently priced, we each had a non alcoholic cocktail -they were unusual and lovely. Tea and the sweet treats rounded off a lovely afternoon. Id hope to bring my husband and stay in the hotel someday.

We spent this weekend at the Cottage in the Wood to belatedly celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. We stayed in a mountain view room that was tastefully decorated and had a half decent view of the nearby mountains.
The first night, we indulged in the 7 course taster menu with the wine pairings. The food and the wine was just exquisite. Irwan (the sommelier) was very helpful in explaining the wines to us.
The next night, we went off the a la carte. The food was very good, but I would urge you to pay the extra £20 for the taster menu. It is well worth it.
Kath is really hospitable and helpful and the place is run and managed in a very professional but unstuffy way.

A truly wonderful lunch today at this extremely welcoming restaurant.
We had the lunchtime five course taster menu and wine pairing which was an absolute bargain, even with the extra cheese course (and port, obviously) and coffee with petit fours.
All courses were beautifully presented with layers of flavours.
Particular favourites were the oyster cream/dill that danced around the palate without overpowering the trout; and the touch of sweetness in the capers brought the venison and sauerkraut to a whole new level. Oh, and the Pinot pairing highlighted the smoke in the emulsion wonderfully.
Service - absolutely superb. A genuine friendliness and warmth came over at every service and their passion for their fare was clear to see.
Well done Michelin for finally daring to leave the city and recognising this gem. The team's efforts and ambitions to maintain local offerings in this pretty location fully deserve their star.

A hidden treasure is the only way to describe this place.

Just had a 3 night break stay at 'Cottage in the Woods' and would like to say a big thank you to Kath and Liam and all the wonderful staff for a most memorable stay.
We were greeted with a very warm welcome and shown to our cottage room, which had all the facilities required plus lots of little extras.

Exceptional food and presentation with Ben and his team showing passion commitment and pride in their skills they are truly worthy of the Michelin star status.

If you want peace and tranquility, nestled in beautiful grounds and woodland, a place to relax, recharge and indulge then we would highly recommend a stay here.

We will definately be returning until then keep safe.

We had the absolute pleasure of staying here for our anniversary weekend!
It was our first trip away from London since lockdown and we were obviously apprehensive.
We should not have worried, our room was deep cleaned prior to our arrival and we were greeted warmly by Kath and her team. The room was lovely and cosy and in such a beautiful setting - it wasn’t long until we saw our first red squirrel or pheasant!
We were straight away made to feel very special, especially at dinner with a beautiful table and a thoughtful anniversary card.
On the first evening we had the tasting menu and the second the A la Carte - the food & presentation was absolutely incredible! Every single dish was delicious and very well thought out. We Love to eat out, and have been lucky to have eaten in a few Michelin star restaurants. We both agreed the experience here was in our top 3 dinners of all time, it was absolutely incredible! Especially the tasting menu - blew us away!
Often in a Michelin star restaurant there can be an air of formality, we enjoyed the atmosphere the team created here and the fun we all had together! The team really do make it special.
Not only do you get a Michelin star dinner but also breakfast! The breakfast was delicious, a great start to the day whilst watching the red squirrels running around!
All the staff are so friendly and welcoming, they are very mindful of social distancing and we both felt so comfortable. The hotel is the perfect hideaway up in the forest. Can’t wait to return again!

We stayed here for two nights, for my husband’s 40th birthday and my birthday. Kath and the team are just the best hosts, it’s like a home away from home and they make you feel most welcome and nothing too much trouble. One of the most covid secure venues I’ve been too with the highest compliance to mask wearing both guests, staff and many sanitizer points and reminders. We stayed in the cottage room which as others have said isn’t the biggest but is well formed and fine for the stay- the gem here is the food and service !!! We had the tase Cumbria one evening and the regular dinner menu the other evening and it was faultless. My favourite being the scallop dish and beef. The breakfast is also high quality with much choice and the salmon and eggs was delicious. Drinks for the location and food are also well priced and so we did indulge. Was just the perfect stay away from our 3 young children and to celebrate. Would return in a heartbeat and would recommend.

We discovered this place from a website run by the Holiday
Property Bond which has accommodation in nearby Braithwaite, where we were staying. However, even if it wasn’t just a couple of miles up the road, this restaurant with rooms is well worth visiting wherever you are staying in northern or central Lakeland. Two menus are on offer, the extensive taster at £75 or the standard at £55. Either is really excellent value. We chose the standard menu and were delighted with the quality of the food and service. Canapés were followed by five courses with an optional extra cheese course. Butternut squash soup, chicken terrine, Turbot fish stew, sirloin beef, topped off with poached pear in spicy rice pudding. All delicious. Small volumes but pleasantly full by the end.
There was an extensive wine list, with several good options by the glass. We enjoyed glasses of Nyetimber sparkling wine to start, Alsace Riesling then a Brouilly with the beef. All reasonably priced considering the quality of the overall experience.
Highly recommended.
