Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

We have stayed here on several occasions because we love the location (ideal if you like walking), find the rooms well appointed and clean and enjoy dining in the restaurant. The staff are always been friendly and courteous. Unfortunately we had to cut our last visit short as my partner received some devastating news. However we want to publicly thank Alison for the kindness, understanding and consideration she showed her - a demonstration of the genuine customer care you get here. We shall definitely be returning.

This family run hotel is a real gem. Our booking was short notice and in spite of having to juggle to accommodate us, they did so and thanked us for being understanding. We had a dog friendly room, complete with towel, bowl and locally made biscuits which went down a treat. We ate in the bar at breakfast and dinner time and were able to take Rosie with us. She was treated to a sheepskin rug to lie on while we enjoyed the excellent food. The staff were all friendly and welcoming, making us feel special. With suggestions for daily walks and clean, comfortable room, we all had a wonderful time. Highly recommend this hotel.

Stayed for the first time tonight, the rooms are well appointed and spotlessly clean, Molton & Brown toiletries bottled water, comfy beds.....

The food is absolutely fantastic, cod from the specials board was perfectly cooked and the venison pie was amazing

Black Sheep bitter and Wainwright’s on draft were both spot on, open fire in the bar and a friendly relaxed atmosphere created by the staff.

It’s also dog friendly and has some rooms where dogs aren’t welcome for non dog lovers

An absolute gem

We were in one of the stable rooms with our miniature schnauzer and were delighted the room was the same high standard as the main hotel where we had previously stayed.
Their attention to detail made all the difference. The food and service was excellent and we appreciated that they used so many local producers..
Our dog was made very welcome and enjoyed the sheepskin rug provided by our table.
A pleasure to return to such a special place

Following a recommendation we booked the last room available in Monks Cottage.
The room was beautiful with muted soft furnishings, quality linen and toiletries. Shortbread on the hostess tray was melt in the mouth.
Situated in the courtyard at the back of the inn the room was peaceful and two lounges were available for guests use. While dogs are allowed in each room there was no evidence of former visitors.
The restaurant was inviting with lovely cutlery and glassware. Guests with dogs dined in another room ! Food at dinner and breakfast was excellent.
The welcome could have been warmer and the offer of help with luggage would be welcome for less able guests. Small points in an otherwise enjoyable visit.

We booked 3 courtyard rooms for a family get away to celebrate our sons 40th birthday, and it was a good choice it being our 1st stay at the Rose and Crown we were not disappointed.
From arriving to find plenty of parking outside our rooms ,to booking in process it was quick and easy.
The 3 rooms were a a little different in style and all good, bathroom with Molton Brown toiletries. They were very clean and comfortable it being December we were worried they might be a bit chilly but needn't have worried at all
After unpacking we headed for the lovely bar with a open fire it was very warm and welcoming . The evening meals in the beautiful panneld candle lit dining room was delightful as was the tasty and filing breakfast each morning.
Hats of to the lovely staff and chef as everything was spot on.
We are hoping to have another visit in the new year and would thoroughly recommend.

Due to our last minute booking, availability was limited so we stayed in a suite with its own sitting room. What a beautiful room! Our suite was very well appointed and had a lovely view overlooking the village. In addition, there were a few thoughtful touches that we had not expected such as homemade biscuits, complementary water and lovely cosmetics.

We had relaxing pre dinner drinks in the cosy bar where our dinner order was taken before we were shown through to the more formal wood panelled dining room. The service was excellent and we had a good meal. As well as the main menu, ‘specials’ were available which included a delicious monk fish dish. Breakfast was fabulous and the smoked haddock omelette is not to be missed.

The Rose and Crown is in a superb location for exploring beautiful Teesdale and leaflets are available from reception outlining walks from the hotel.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to return.

Stayed for a weekend with dinner and breakfasts included. The food was delicious with plenty of choice and excellent service. Bar was also very nice and more casual.
Cute, English countryside pub style room - very cosy.
They put on a number of lovely touches too - homemade biscuits, daily leaflets with the weather/recommendations etc. And detailed walk descriptions all of which helped to make it a very lovely stay. Will be back :)

As returning visitors we can testify to the high quality of this hotel. From the warm welcome upon arrival to the comfortable well appointed rooms. Food served in the cosy bar or elegant dining room is always beautifully presented and delicious. Many good walks from the doorstep. Jewel in the crown here is definitely the wonderful staff. Gilbert our westie can't wait to return.

We had an amazing time at The Rose and Crown! We visited with our dog who was very welcome with dog bowl, dog biscuits and a towel for her laid out on arrival! The rooms were comfortable, large King-sized bed, very clean with good black-out blinds for peaceful sleep. The food was DIVINE - we ate at the premises every night and without fail every dish was amazing. We would highly recommend and will come back to visit!
