We have stayed in this lovely bed and breakfast 5 years in a row. The charming hosts Isabelle and Hervé made this place feel like a second home for us. Your day at ‘La Licorne’ starts with an amazing breakfast, full of home-made pastries, different ‘confitures’, fresh-cut fruit salad and authentic French bread (and an amazing slection of French cheeses). The Vézère valley, where La Licorne is based, has a lot to offer. You’re close to touristic areas such as ‘Lascaux’ or ‘Sarlat’ and can discover several medieval castles or one of the authentic French villages (we recommend st Leon sur vézère). Doing a canoë on the river is a must. The accomodation at ‘La Licorne’ is very good. Rooms are authentic and have all you need. You can relax on your private terras, in the spatious garden or take a swim in the (heated) pool. You can also go for one of the many ‘promenades’ in the area or play ping-pong / badminton in the garden or petanque just next to the B&B. During the evening, Isabelle will tell you where u can find the well known ‘marché gourmand’ in the region, or recommend you nearby restaurants. There is a market on Friday evening close to ‘La Licorne’ which is nice to go eat and get to know the local cuisine and people. The small village Valojoux also has a local ‘honesty’ shop, where u can buy local food and drinks. We can’t wait for our next visit!

We had a lovely five night stay in the huge room upstairs in the separate building. We’ve stayed at LaLicorne pre-pandemic and enjoyed it as much this time as last. You are welcomed with apple juice or beer, and there is lovely back yard seating. The pool is perfect for those warm Dordogne days. There is a huge assortment of goodies for breakfast. The hosts are so kind and helpful, and there are lots of tourist brochures, maps and booklets in the corner of the living room. Valojoulx is very rural, but it is only a few minute drive to Thomas and only a bit farther to Montignac!

We loved our stay here in September 2021 with a warm welcome from the hostess, a comfortable double room in a beautifully restored old building and absolutely delicious food and drink, both for dinner and breakfast.

Stayed here for three nights with my wife and 10 year old. The room was the lovely and opened onto the lovely garden where there was a ping pong table, pool and other games. We cycled to some great restaurants and had a wonderful time.

We had a wonderful family holiday at La Licorne this summer. A perfect choice if you want to live in an authentic setting, the old Perigourdine house is very well equipped and decorated with lots of care. We particularly enjoyed: - Our relaxing times after sightseeing in the pool or in the large garden (table tennis, deck chairs ..) - The interior decoration of the main house and the Templerie where we slept, ideal for a couple with 2 or 3 children. - Dinner on Thursday evening, all homemade with high-quality local products, exceptional house aperitif and great selection of wines - The dinner Friday evening in the Valojoulx market, close to the guest house, again, exceptional products many local people great atmosphere guaranteed. - The very generous breakfasts, more than 10 homemade cakes and cheese platter! Above all, we wish to thank from the bottom of Hearts Isabelle and her husband for the exceptional quality of their welcome, no wonder families return each year.

We loved this beautiful home of Isabelle's. It is beautifully restored and decorated- our room, Le Melilots, at the top floor of a historic stone building was gorgeous and a fabulous place to return to at night after much exploring! Original 12C stone, wood beams---simply gorgeous. With a heart as large as her personality, Isabelle spent much time with us, sharing her favorite places to explore and visit. Her breakfasts were amazing- a dizzying array of home-baked sweet cakes, breads, claf fouti, cereal, cheeses, etc. Have her make you a special dinner for one of your evenings- you won't be disappointed! She delivered a wonderful experience - and we loved having dinner with several couples who spoke only French, enjoying our fractured communications together. La Licorne (The Unicorn) is located in a tiny 12C village, home of a beautiful church. And, how lucky we were to be there for an evening of Shakespeare in the courtyard of that church! what a special time we spent in Valojoulx with Isabelle, close to so many historic and wonderful places to esplore!

La Licorne is a truly amazing find (thanks, TripAdvisor!). We were welcomed warmly by owner Isabelle and immediately offered a welcome drink. The B&B is immaculately clean, and offers a variety of rooms. My husband and I visited iLa Licorne n advance of a trip to the Lascaux Center, and stayed in the Meliots room. It's a spacious and airy room in a 12th century building (restored of course) with a king-sized bed. Stone walls and exposed beams contrasted with modern flooring and amenities. The decor was a blend of modern and classic themes, including lace table coverings and flower displays throughout. One of the highlights was the evening meal that Isabelle prepared, a delight to the tastebuds from beginnning to end. Using fresh herbs from her yard, she served a five-star repast, beginning with a mise en bouche of cantaloupe balls flavored with fresh mint and slivers of fresh ginger. We were offered aperitifs of homemade wine, and tried the elderberry flower wine, one made of cherry leaves, and fig wine. A hefty appetizer course included salled, figs stuffed with fois gras, goose ham, goose rillette on toast, and more. The main course was magret de canard en brochette with figs, cooked perfectly to order. The vegetable offerings were as good as the brochette: twice baked potatoes with chives and a vegetable quiche/tarte. Our stomachs told us to pass on the cheese course, and we went right to the tiramisu dessert, which was topped with both wild and regular strawberries and had a creamy taste and texture. Breakfast the next morning was a huge spread of yogurts, cheeses, and at least a dozen types of baked goods, plus perfectly brewed coffee. As a frequent traveler, I rate La Licorne as one of the best B&Bs anywhere. Isabelle's hospitality is superb, and she is delightfully funny. Her cooking is superb, as good as what the finest restaurants offer, and a bargain at 30 euros. The accommodations were spectacular in appearance and very comfortable. Overall, La Licorne is an excellent value for an absolutely lovely stay.

We have an unwritten rule that we never go back to the same destination or Chambres d'hotes. But some rules are worth stretching and thus it was that we returned to La Licorne this summer. It is still as lovely as we remembered it. I sabelle is a lovely host making you feel so welcome. Her cooking is exceptional and the menus are typical of the Perigord region.. The rooms are all well furnished with comfortable beds and are kept spotlessly clean. The swimming pool has recently been improved and is now heated. The large garden is perfect to sit and relax in. Children and adults will love her Border Collie Flam, who is still the best footballing dog I have ever seen and she is absolutely safe with children. The guest kitchen area is most useful for preparing picnics and storing any perishables and for preparing a hot snack if required. Many people stay here when visiting Lascaux and do not then take time to make the most of the local area. I would strongly recommend you stay for several days and enjoy visiting some of the other wonderful sites such as the painted caves at Rouffignac or the prehistoric cave dwellings overlooking the Vezere, which is also lovely to Kayak down. A lovely spot in a beautiful area. Book it now!

Isobel is fantastic and could not do enough for us during our stay. The rooms are fabulous, clean, very comfortable and each is unique. The breakfast is unlike any I have experienced at a hotel, the range of homemade cakes, teas and cheese on offer is enough to fulfil any appetite. I would highly recommend this hotel as a base for anyone that is exploring the Dordogne. Thank you so much Isobel.

My wife and I have just spent a fortnight's wonderful holiday at La Licorne for the fourth consecutive year. My wife is French. I am English. I write this review in the hope of encouraging English visitors to experience the warmth of sincere French hospitality in a beautiful area that is rich in splendid scenery and fascinating places to visit. A good way to get an initial overview of part of the area is to take a boat trip on the River Dordogne from Roque Gageac. The proprietor of La Licorne is Isabelle, along with husband Hervé. Isabelle will happily speak with you in English. The breakfasts are "to die for" and almost everything served by Isabelle is made by her with much produce coming from her own garden. In short, the cuisine is truly exceptional. The standard of service and cleanliness are first class. So, if you fancy a little adventure into the French way of life in the most beautiful of surroundings, you would find it difficult to do better than to stay at La Licorne (The Unicorn) in Valojoulx. Your nearest town of size is Montignac at a distance of about 7 km. The photo shown here does not do justice at all to La Licorne. La Licorne is thought to date from the thirteenth century and the main building, not the one shown here, houses the lounge and dining room and is very attractive.
