Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Spent 5 nights over Christmas with our whole family- 8 adults, 4 children and 3 dogs. Definitely an amazing Christmas to remember. Whistling Jacks is the perfect set up for a large group. Plenty space, plenty bedrooms and plenty bathrooms. Also ample crockery and cooking facilities to serve a Christmas dinner. The lounge had a homely, comfy, cosy atmosphere to gather in the evenings. The bathrooms and bedrooms were very clean. The beds very comfortable. I understand the downstairs en-suite is about to be renewed. The kitchen was large enough for a few cooks to work together and certainly had every appliance you could ask for. The work-tops and hob could do with replacing- a bit tired and a few chips in both. We couldn’t really use the garden because the weather wasn’t good but I’m sure in the summer it would be lovely. Lots of space and fully enclosed. A lovely walk to the beach and through St. Bees. We would have liked to explore the area more had the weather been better. I met Jacqui- the owner just before we left. It was nice to put a face to a name as we had communicated a few times during booking. She was very nice and I’m sure will always try to do her best to accommodate any requests. She immediately asked if everything had been ok and if we had any suggestions for improvement. We, as a group, all agreed we would return.

Wow, just got back from spending the weekend at Whistling Jacks with family for our Sons 18th Birthday. The house is amazing, so much space in EVERY room ..... never seen a Sofa in a bathroom before, that’s how big they are .... the garden was perfect for the dogs with it been big and enclosed. All the equipment you could ever think of needing and a lovely touch from the owners Jacqui and Mark leaving a basket of goodies and some wine too. Location was fantastic too, a short walk down to the brilliant beach off the beaten track. Thank you.

The photographs don't do this place justice, it's much bigger than it looks, but is still very cosy and comfortable. There were 12 members of my family staying from Christmas Eve until the day after Boxing Day and we found the kitchen well equipped, the beds extremely comfortable and the log burner added to the warmth and Christmassy feel of the place. We went for a family walk to St. Bees beach on Christmas Day and worked up an appetite for our Christmas dinner. Jacqui was an excellent host, I can't speak highly enough, she even left mince pies and selection boxes for the children. I would definitely recommend Whistling Jacks and would like to visit again, perhaps in the summer next time.

We had a great time, everything was perfect. We would recommend Whisteling Jacks to everyone. The food was spectacular with so much flavour. The beds were comfortable and very comfortable. Only a couple minutes drive from the marina or a short walk. It's a great way to unwind and get away from it all. Can't wait to go there next again!!

When major England sporting teams go away for a World Cup, they’re always ensconced in a relaxing, beautiful retreat to take their minds off the tournament pressures ahead. So it was with my assault on the World Gurning Championships at the notorious Egremont Crab Fair. WHISTLING JACKS - a remote hamlet within a short drive of St Bees - is as still and lovely as my face was hectic and unlovely on the big night itself on the stage of Egremont Market Hall. The sociable Mark and Jacqui offer a completely human experience. Just the sort of place for an author to think clearly and help their ideas lightbulb to flash on (I thought of three new short stories on the last morning alone!) You get a lot of room for your money.  There was a settee in our bedroom, yet it still wasn’t cramped.  Even the bathroom had a sofa – that’s a first for us!  Then there’s the huge feature-brickwork-adorned communal lounge and cavernous couches. WHISTLING JACKS is also very enabling for ground-floor guests. My personal, high-altitude gurning trainer (and partner) Tracey suffers from advanced Multiple Sclerosis. The shower is spacious.  But Tracey had her first bath here for three years. So at last I can stop pinching my nose.  But, seriously, bubbles in the bath and the wine glass made for a luxuriating experience for her, as did her first oyster experience at the crab fair. After failing to land the world title the night before, Mark consoled us with his infamous omelettes. These lived up to their billing – a full English breakfast in a spectacular eggy cheese wrap.  I’ll never eat another omelette again, they were that good. Just one regret.  We only stayed three nights. Next time it will be longer. Mark Stillman (with Tracey Dunn)

we hired this for my mother's 70th and had a fabulous weekend. The barn was well maintained, and had everything you needed. The owner Jacqui couldn't do enough for us. she provided us with plenty of information about the area, places to eat and pamper packages. St Bees is lovely, plenty of nice places to eat. The beach is a short walk over the fields. The whole family had an enjoyable, relaxing weekend and we are all looking forward to staying again in the future. we would definetly recommend a stay here.

We had the most perfect weekend at Whistling Jacks. We hired it out as a surprise for my sisters hen party and the perfect layout lent itself perfectly to a fabulous party house. We hired a fabulous chef to cook for us one night and had a walk into st. Bees on one of the afternoons. Beautiful scenery and a perfect cottage, I can't wait to book our next holiday.

I've been to a lot of places around the country and nothing comes close to this place! First of all, the location is splendid, one of our favourite places to visit for long walks or just relaxing lounging around the beaches. Last time we visited was April 2012 (Feb 2013 was the earliest I could select), sorry I didn't write a review sooner! The place itself is beautiful, a perfect blend of modern and traditional decor, we always said we'd design our house just like that one day!! The hosts are wonderful, friendly and accommodating (and they have adorable black labs!). We could have a really great conversation with those two every time we ran into them! It was lovely to see them for a second time after about a year and have them remember who we were! Their breakfasts are top notch, I remember them making me their special Whistling Jack's Omelette which I don't recall being on the menu, they just said they'd love me to try it. T'was delicious and very filling!! The standard breakfast is perfect too, can't fault it! Wish I could remember everything that was on it! The bedrooms are without doubt the cosiest, biggest and most comfortable you could ever ask for. We stayed twice and both times we said they had the best beds we've ever slept in. I think about their beds from time to time when I sleep in my own rubbish bed at home! I got THE best sleep there that I'd had in years, slept the entire way through and woke up completely refreshed. Please, PLEASE go and stay with them, the price is just the same as any regular B&B but this feels five star! I agree with others, photos do not do it justice. Wait till you see the living room!
