Given that this was the hottest time of the year to visit Cambodia, my partner and I were looking for an upscale island experience on a budget. Primarily we wanted long white beaches, with some amenities and great food. The picturesque images and amenities that were listed for The Beach Island Resort seemed to match our desires.

Upon arrival we saw that the island was indeed gorgeous and matched the images we had in our minds. Check in was easy, and nothing really beats stepping out of the door of our private VIP bungalow onto a pristine white sandy beach. Incredible! The waters were clear and at night we had an amazing bioluminescent experience! Hiking around the island was awesome, and there are some incredible restaurants around.

Koh Rong Samloem was so beautiful. However, we were disappointed to find that some amenities we had specifically required were not actually available. There was no WiFi (a + for some people, but for us an inconvenience), and no air conditioning! This made our stay uncomfortable due to the temperatures hovering around 34C or 98F throughout our stay. There was only one fan in the 9m bungalow, and it did not serve the entire room properly to be considered "Air Conditioning." Additionally, the safe was broken, the showerhead was broken, and our room was not cleaned or water / mini bar replenished by resort staff once while were were there for 3 days. We had to request towels at the front desk. While the staff did respond to requests (luggage support, towels, etc) we were somewhat surprised to have to ask. If we were not honest people, we easily could have gotten away with not paying for the mini bar items that we did use (there were some nice wines, and of course beer provided that we enjoyed).

Those issues aside, The Beach Island Resort is an ideal upscale backpackers paradise. Just be aware of amenities listings, double check by emailing ahead of time so that there are no surprises. And perhaps go during a cooler time of year than April!

Upon arrival at The Beach Resort we were greeted with some happy news: the shared bathroom bungalow we had reserved was overbooked, so we were upgraded to a VIP bungalow for the first two out of four nights. The VIP bungalow was great, with a king-size, round bed and windows all around the bungalow with view on the beach and the sea. After two days we changed to shared bathroom bungalow, which was a lot simpler, but still had everything we needed (bed, mosquito net, fan). All bungalows (shared bathroom, private bathroom and VIP ones) are right on the beach, with the sea at high tide just a few meters from the entrance. The resort has plenty of sunbeds, hammocks and swingchairs to relax in. We especially enjoyed the tree platform with two hammocks, which gave an even better view over all the splendour of Saracen bay. The beach/sea here was the most beautiful we have seen in 8 months of travelling through SE Asia.

Unfortunately there was a major negative point as well: the restaurant staff/management could use a serious upgrade. We got served raw chichen from the bbq, staff rolled their eyes and sniggered upon ordering for no apparent reason, the breakfast buffet looked like a table were a 5-year old gave his birthday party, one big mess, stains everywere, and was infested by flies and ants, etc. We tried the restaurant once for dinner, breakfast and lunch and got disappointed three times, so we enjoyed all other meals at the other restaurants on the beachstrip (Leng Meng, Sun-Island, Ataman's and especially Saracen Bay Resort was good).

All in all a great stay, if you really want to enjoy it, grab your meals elsewhere and just enjoy their bungalows.

The island and beach is so beautiful, it takes your breath away when you first see it. To that end you can't really go too wrong wherever you stay as it is the beach that makes it. We stayed in a deluxe bungalow on the beach front. The views were magic and the bungalow itself fairly decent. The downside was that the electricity cuts out at mid-night and the room was roasting. There are other places similar priced with electricity through the night so you can keep the fan going.
I would give this place a higher score if it weren't for the service. We found the staff quite miserable. At check in we didn't even get a smile or a welcome. This demeanour seemed to affect the mood of the main social area. When we went to grab breakfast the first morning it was like walking into a morgue. A bit of energy and friendliness could make this place great.
However, I wouldn't let this put you off staying here as we tended to go to other bars and restaurants which were brilliant. Highly recommend that you eat at Saracen Bay Resort which is to the right of this one if you are looking at the beach. Food is the best on the island and the staff are amazing. Also check out Green/blue down the other end. Great bar and owners again with some chill out hammocks in the water.

I would like to preface this review by saying that I am not a person who is particularly fussy about accommodation. As long as there is a bed and a decent standard of cleanliness I am a happy customer. However the terrible standard of this accommodation left me feeling as though I needed to share my experience in order to help other travellers avoid having the same experience.

The Beach Island Resort and Beach Club is located on the stunning island of Koh Rong Samloem. There is no doubt that the island is like a paradise, with beautiful white sandy beaches and turquoise water. Unfortunately this accommodation somewhat ruined our stay on this beautiful island. The bungalows themselves are actually fine (despite the fact that they have a picture of the deluxe bungalow on their website which is advertised as a private bungalow. The private bungalows are actually much more basic than the deluxe bungalows but this is only a minor complaint). The bedding was clean which was great. However the mosquito net was full of holes and it was very dirty and also the shared bathroom was filthy.

The real problem however was the staff. To say they were unhelpful would be an understatement. Several times we wanted to ask questions about the island e.g. borrowing snorkelling gear, and they would actively pretend that they couldn't see us standing at the reception desk to avoid talking to us. We ate in the restaurant two times and both times we waited for 1.5 hours for our food to arrive. Everyone else we spoke to said they had waited for similar times as well. In addition to this the restaurant was absolutely filthy, the table cloths were covered in stains and there was rubbish strewn over the floor and tables. In the morning at the breakfast buffet the staff would get the food out (late- breakfast was supposed to start at 8 but was never ready until 8.30 or 9) and then proceed to serve themselves and sit around eating and chatting with no regard for the customers staying at the resort waiting to get food.

The first night we stayed there the resort hosted a full moon party. The next day none of the staff bothered to clean up, there were beer cans and rubbish everywhere. Also the staff decided that due to the party the night before they were all too tired to serve drinks or prepare food for the people staying in the resort. There was no apology or suggestions of anywhere else we could go to eat- it was just 'no food or drinks today'. I do understand that they were tired but a simple apology would have gone a long way. Also despite being too tired to serve drinks or food to anyone else the staff did manage to make themselves meals and sit around in the restaurant drinking until about 12am which we found a bit strange.

The major thing that prompted me to write this review however is truly tragic. A woman died in the restaurant on the last day we were there. I have no proof that she died due to the food she ate in the restaurant at the Beach Island Resort & Beach Club. However I do know that she was in the restaurant and then within the time span of 2 hours she became violently ill. She vomited so much that she got fluid in her lungs and passed away. It was absolutely awful. There was a doctor staying at the resort who tried to resuscitate the lady using CPR and while this was happening the staff at the Beach Island Resort and Beach Club did NOTHING to clear the area. They just stood around and watched. After the poor lady had passed away they did cordon the area off however there was a new boat load of tourists arriving and they did not bother to inform them of what had happened or that there was a body in the restaurant, they just carried on, business as normal. It was absolutely horrific and my heart was breaking for the lady and her poor, poor husband.

In short- do not stay at the The Beach Island Resort and Beach Club. There are many other accommodation options of similar price which are much, much nicer with much friendlier and more helpful staff (we found this out when we went to other places to eat and the service was much better). I truly hope that this helps other travellers avoid having the same experience that we did, as Koh Rong Samloem really is a beautiful island well worth visiting.

My girlfriend and I booked a privated bungalow. There are no cash machines in Koh Rong so we arrived with $500. There was a safebox in the room, where we put the money and our credit cards.
Next morning, we found the safe box was opened and everything was gone. The door of the bungalow and the lock of the safebox were not forced so clearly it was somebody from the staff. The manager confirmed there is a key opening all the safeboxes but "the staff was too stupid to take it".
We contacted the police and asked them to check the staff rooms but the police only cared about receiving their bribe (after all our money was gone!).
We left the island crying, frustrated as nobody seem to care about finding the thief. I hope this review helps people understanding the behavior to expect by the staff of this hotel.

I cannot say anything good about this resort. When we arrived, we placed our properties into the safe box (inside our room) and we closed with the key. The receptionist told us that the code was not working so we even did not think to test it. In fact, later we realised that the safe had batteries and the numeric keyboard was working.
Day one: we closed the box and the room and we left for dinner. At night, we did not notice anything strange so we went to sleep. When in the morning we opened the box to take money for breakfast we discovered the fact.
Our passports, credit cards and money had been stolen from the safe box of our bungalow. There was NOT sign of forced entry either in the door and in the safe. Obviously we pointed out that the thief probably has a copy of the key (in fact, one exists in reception) or the code to open it.
The hotel manager DID NOT provide any support. The answer provided to our request of having a meeting with the staff is the following: 'people in my staff are very stupid. They would not be able to do anything like that'.
To our request of having the money back so we would have left the manager replied first that it was not possible. In a second moment, she told us to complain with Agoda and to ask the money back. She would have approved. We did it . After two months, Agoda is unsuccessfully trying to contact them but they never reply back... so no refund.

Please stay away from this place!

Stayed one night in the VIP Bungalow. The staff was nice though they just gave us the key and walked to the room by ourselves. Splendid beach and you can listen to the sound of nature (wave). Very safe island (can even open the door to sleep at night!) Don't expect any air-con or wifi here but definitely a great place to stay! Just open the door and you will see the pretty beach! The Khmer food of this restaurant is good - espcially Lok Lak is the best!

I understand how Saracen Bay can be described as a slice of paradise. It has the white sands, palm trees and crystal clear water.

Most of the resorts have obviously realized that people will pay double or triple the standard room rates, to come and stay on the island. Once they have their customers on the island, they don't need to do anything else.

Food is expensive, because you can't go anywhere else. Food quality and service is terrible, because they don't care and also, know you can't go anywhere else.

It rained the entire 3 days we were here, can't be helped. We got off our 2 hour late boat and plodded to reception in the pouring rain. The receptionist was clearly annoyed that we had interrupted them from staring into the abyss. They shouted for another staff member, 5 minutes later a guy came out, receptionist gave him an umbrella and pointed for us to follow.

It was a nice touch, to follow the staff, dry and happy under his umbrella whilst we stumbled 10ft behind with all of our stuff getting drenched. Cold and soaked through we got to our room, then went to the shared bathroom for a hot shower.
It was a stone hut, full of frogs, lizards and mosquitos, it is in a jungle though, the shower hose just hung onto the ground. It was freezing cold of course, no hot water. Just cold, brown water.

At some point during the day, the hotel will switch off all electricity, so the generator can have a break. Seeing as the lights wouldn't work in the toilet and the fan wouldn't work in our room, I asked the receptionist what time it will be turned back on, with a huge sigh she shrugged and said "1-2 hours!" Most helpful...

Wifi may as well not be listed. Works for 30 seconds every 15 minutes.

Staff could not care less and will do their best not to acknowledge you, when they do, they'll make sure you realize what an inconvenience you are to them.

We stayed here in Feb this year and loved it but it's changed so much. Attitude from staff and management is dies graceful, unhelpful and lazy. Empty bottles, glasses and food plates left for days at the bar and pool table areas. Broken items, torn curtains and mattresses made the stay less than expected. Unavailable dishes from the restaurant abundant. We stayed 4 nights and had most of our meals at Other restaurants. I'd stay elsewhere on this beautiful bay and wonderful island.

My partner and I paid £21 ($28) for 2 nights and were nicely surprised

PROS

- although it is a ‘dorm’ we had separating walls so you did have privacy
- you have our own light, fan, safe & mosquito net
- they provide towels, toothbrushes & toothpaste
- you are right on the beach and can hear the sea from your bed
- a nice breakfast buffet is on offer for $5 each
- the toilets are clean and always had toilet roll
- the showers are communal but yet again very clean and there was soap provided
- staff were nice

CONS

- online it was advertised as ‘budget double room’ with no mention of it being in a dorm! False advertising but we did not mind in the end as we still felt like we had our own space
- the breakfast buffet had no meat on offer which I do not appreciate personally
- the water we bought was expensive - $2 for a big bottle when the mini mart sold it for 75c
- you had to pay a $20 deposit for the safe (you do get it back) which is understandable but they do not tell you this prior to arrival! There are no cash machines on the island and we needed the money for food so bare that in mind!
- you also cannot pay for the room on card so we had to pay cash so yet again that cut into our food money causing a struggle for us with food

Our boat dropped us off at the island's "ferry terminal" rather than at the pier nearest the hotel. Still, it was only a short walk of around 10 minutes or so. Just swing a left once you hit dry land and continue along the only footpath. It'll give you an idea of places you can eat along the way, too. Enjoy!
