Firstly this is a great location with Neptune’s Staircase locks right outside and views of the mountains all around.

Unfortunately the hotel was no more than average with a very basic room, small bed although surprisingly a nice modern bathroom. Thin walls meant we could hear guests in the next rooms.

The theme of good and bad continued throughout the stay with generally excellent staff and good food but a strange cafe setting for the restaurant. The adjoining bar was more traditional and the two themes did not fit together.

Breakfast was good but we were seated in a rather dingy windowless room.

One incident during our stay was totally unacceptable. We arrived during a heavy rain storm and whist resting on the bed in our first floor room, three men appeared right outside the window on the sloped tiled roof. We had our curtains open and could have been in a state of undress or worse. Common courtesy should have suggested that they call us and the other 7 affected rooms to advise of this work prior to these men appearing directly outside our windows. I’m sure this is not a normal occurrence and could well have been an emergency but the lack of communication on this matter was inexcusable.

Back on the positive side, we saw the best examples of Covid cleaning at this hotel and felt very safe.

So overall a game of two halves. I would return but would upgrade to one of the better rooms as the one we had could not be described as more than 3 star and was not worth the £160 paid.

Stayed at this hotel on the New Year package for two nights
Hotel has a fantastic position by the locks of the canal where you can enjoy a nice walk during your stay.
Arrived just after 3pm check in was smooth and we were taken to our room by the very helpful receptionist. Room itself was lovely, warm (heating on) very roomy in good decorative order and spotlessly clean, Bathroom was likewise very spacious. Room had lots of small gifts fruit etc., which was a nice touch. We overlooked the locks in the canal which was perfect.
Remainder of the hotel was similar in as much as it is clearly well looked after, with the bar area having a very cosy feel to it. Staff were very friendly and willing to help in any way they could. The food and entertainment over the next 2 days was very good, from the 5 course meal on the 31st to the breakfasts and buffet lunch and dinner on the 1st. No sign of any recycled food from previous meals, all was fresh and hot.
All and all it’s hard to find fault with our stay, a very nice experience, with the staff defiantly a major reason for guests having an enjoyable stay. Would defiantly recommend

Negatives: We have stayed here on three previous occasions. This time round was a one week much needed break. Paying £200+ per night we did have certain expectations, so was disappointed to find room 37 with shower only and reduced water pressure and a view overlooking the bins! We raised this and was moved to a room overlooking the canal. This was a vast improvement, albeit the light fitting in the bathroom above the sink has no cover. We also received a £100 refund on our first night. Staff were under pressure given the time of year and staff shortages.

The hotel is not four star at present and I do think rooms with breakfast should be charged no more than £150 per night.

Positives: Dog friendly, good breakfast, comfortable bed, great location and helpful/friendly staff.

I was part of a Great Rail Group that stayed at this hotel in September for 3 nights.

Location of the hotel was very nice being beside the Neptune stair case. However the hotel was in need of some urgent “TLC”.

My room although large and more like a suite had seen better days. The room was technically clean in one sense but the carpet had several large stains on and was rucked in one area. I felt less than happy to sit on furniture that was badly stained and nearly threadbare.

Fortunately the bed was clean and appeared to be stain free. The walls were heavily marked where items had been dragged along them. I tried several ways to get more water from the shower with no avail, I just managed to get 3 showers on the days we stayed there.

One of the worst complaints the group had was although porterage had been paid for by Great Rail Group, the hotel refused to take our cases to our rooms.

The hotel had no lift so you had the sight of different aged people with varying health conditions trying to drag their cases upstairs. If one person had tripped up it could have caused a nasty accident resulting in people falling downstairs with their luggage.

Trying to get a drink at the bar was not easy you had one lady trying to cope with normal bar drink orders as well as the drinks orders from people having meals too. It resulted in absolute chaos in regards trying to get a drink.

Overall the food was actually very good the evening meals were nice and it was a good quality breakfast that was offered. The only problem with breakfast there was no guarantee what order your breakfast items might arrive in, sometimes you got your cooked breakfast before your cereal and fruit juice!

It whilst there we learnt the hotel had been sold in the day we had arrived.

My hope is the new owners invest in a refit / repaint of the hotel and also ensure enough enthusiastic staff are on duty.

The hotel in it’s current state feels like a run down 3 star hotel than the 4 star hotel it claims to be.

Dear Westward01 Thank you for taking your time to review your recent stay with us during your group journey with the Great Rail Group. We value all feedback from our guests, which helps us improve the service that we give. Sadly at present the hotel does not have a lift but hopefully when our extension plans go ahead this is something that will be put in place. Although it was stated by Great Rail that porterage was paid for within the hotel it was not and had not been agreed with us prior to you all arriving, this was a service that we arranged for you all on departure with the help of our team. Due to social distancing measures in place there can only be one person on the bar preparing the drinks as there is not enough space for more than this but with table service in place it means that people get served as they are seated which stops any queuing at the bar area. I am sure there are many ways in which the new owners will invest and improve the hotel Thank you again for your feedback and I hope that you enjoyed all of your tour Kind Regards Cathy M

Stayed here for a few nights as the lockdown rules started to ease, its a little strange with all the new rules but staff were great. All the required measures in place. Rooms are decent enough for a few days. We also brought our dog along and its a great dog friendlh hotel and you can sit in the bar area with the dog which is good. Only downside would be with sitting in the bar area rhe service was quite poor, not sure if this is due to the new rules but it seemed like if the Bistro restaurnt was busier then staff didn't pay much attention to the bar area so we waited around 20 minutes to be asked for our order. There is also no background music or TV in the bar area so quiet at times. We ate here one night as well and it was on a reduced menu, my partner had ordered a trio of salmon starter for £9 and it was a large portion however I then ordered the trio of salmon for main which is £16 and the portion size was the exact same, which was a bit disappointing. The food was really tasty though. I would recommend, I think just with everything going on at the moment things are a bit hard for everyone to get used to.

Lovely location, friendly staff, ambiance pleasant. We popped in out of the rain for some tea and cake, the food was delicious, reasonably priced and home made into the bargain.

Had our dogs with us in the lounge area and it is spacious enough to accommodate both human and animal patrons without any hassles.

Therefore in my humble opinion wholly contradicts a previous visitors Jan post.

Which I’m glad we ignored and went along, look forward to our next visit and would definitely recommend a visit with or without dogs 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

The hotel is in a superb location, with views of Ben Nevis, we chose an executive room with balcony, & it was a lovely room with stunning views, there was a few little details that sadly let the hotel down, small things that collectively just took the edge off our stay, it’s just needs a little more organisation to make a better guest experience, i.e we requested mash with our meal but we got chips, I requested a couple of items deleting from my breakfast but they were still served up on my plate, frequently there was no staff serving on the bar & guests had to wait for someone to appear. The food was excellent & very tasty, but there was no alternative to chips on most disses, a few little things didn’t spoil our stay but at the price the hotel charges they just seemed to lack a bit of organisation that would improve the service. But all in all we enjoyed our stay & would return.

When we booked a table we were assured the restaurant could cope with gluten free options. Upon arrival it was more like Faulty Towers. For a main you could only have steak and chips! For dessert only fruit or ice cream!! For a starter not dressed crab because they had run out of the GF crab. Instead we ordered scallops but they came back and said it wasn’t GF! Scallops are GF but not the black pudding, which is unusual. We shared the dish and I had the black pudding and we shared the scallops. We then ordered a large mussels with a mix of normal or GF bread, which they were able to supply (so why could they not toast the GF bread and add crab meat?) Anyway, what we ended up was GF and was nice. When we got the bill it included the scallops, crab, wrong, and two lots of mussels (we only had one!) Overcharged by 50% until we pointed out all of the mistakes. Not a relaxing pleasant, experience!!

No reception staff available in this tired looking hotel
Dining room was closed other than for breakfast which to be fair was of a good standard. The bistro was reminiscent of a transport cafe with a extremely limited menu and the food was extremely average when it finally arrived. We only ate there the once and found alternatives for the other 3 nights.
We had to search for staff when we required anything for our room including toilet paper as no one answered the phone. Our room was £300 per night and the bathroom was tired and there was no cover on the light above the mirror so the bulbs and wiring was exposed.
This was one of four hotels we stayed at during our visit to the Lakes, Scotland and Cheshire and they should be truly ashamed of the prices they charge for the amenities and service they offer.

It kind of pains me to write this as I really don't like leaving bad reviews but here goes...

My partner and I were supposed to be going to Portugal but due to his passport still being with DVLA, we decided to come to Fort William. Not being on holiday since 2019, we were looking forward to a relaxing, restful trip.

First of all, there is no one to greet you at the reception. You are met with a self service machine that doesn't work. I had to traipse through the bar to try and find someone. In the end, a customer had to show me! I noticed several people also having this issue and at one point my partner had to help an elderly customer up to her room with her luggage.

We got the room and there was something not so pleasant waiting for us in the toilet! Made you wonder whether the rooms had been cleaned. On that note, I repeatedly had to request toilet roll. I mean, we are there for 6 days and they gave us one roll. Why not just leave a few, it was as cheap as anything anyway! When the room was cleaned, it wasn't actually cleaned. The beds and towels were changed and that was about it. At one point a member of staff walked into the room while my partner was lying on bed, as she thought it was empty. There is no air con in the room so after running, walking, cycling, it stank and felt horrible.

The staff are not proactive at asking if you want or need anything. We had to go up and ask for coffee, ask for lunch etc, even when we were clearly sat waiting.

On the last few days there was building work going on so we were woken up with banging and drilling. Why let out the rooms knowing that was going on or at least, inform us or ask if we want to move rooms! We came away to get peace!

I have to say the experience was bitterly disappointing considering we spent over £800 of our hard earned money and were expecting a 4 star service. It was far from it.

The only good things were the food, which was amazing but very pricey, the location is great and one particular member of staff was friendly, the lady who signed us out with short blonde hair. I didn't catch her name but she was very pleasant.

It's such a shame as I didn't even leave a tip and I would never normally do that but I just couldn't as it wasn't worthy of it.

Hi we stayed in room 24 and ha a view of the mountains and the start of Neptunes staircase, we have no complaints about noise, the room was spotless, very spacious and certainly had plenty of hot water. We loved all the food, we ate the cooked breakfast but lots of other choices from the cold buffet. We ate in the dining room on our first night and the brasserie on the second. Could not complain at all. Hope you get sorted.
