John and Gillian warmly welcome you to Stowfield Barn, our home in the village of Newland within the Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley. An area of outstanding natural beauty bordering England and South Wales across the three counties of Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Monmouthshire. The Forest of Dean is a magical place in all seasons. For the more adventurous we have mountain biking, zip wires, and kayaking. Cycle tracks for families of all ages and abilities abound in the beautiful forest. Try walking the many routes (Wye Valley walk and Offa's Dyke path to name two), visit local castles, museums cathedrals and sample local produce at the many local hostelries. Several golf courses are close by. Chepstow race course host several meetings each year. Within this great setting lies Stowfield Barn which has been beautifully converted to provide a variety of Bed and Breakfast and separate self catering accommodation. The 100 year old barn is located off a quiet country lane on the outskirts of the village of Newland which boasts a 13th century church known as the 'Cathedral in the Forest' and the award winning Ostrich Inn. Both in easy walking distance! Newland is situated 4 miles from Monmouth, 8 miles from Chepstow and 12 miles from Ross on Wye We look forward to welcoming you very soon. John & Gillian

I took my other half here for a surprise birthday weekend away. I was really keen for everything to be absolutely perfect and I'd sent the owners, Gillian & John, a couple of emails in advance just to make sure. My partner & I both have certain dietary requirements and I was really encouraged by the accommodating attitude of both hosts. We were bowled over when we arrived, by just how lovely Stowfield Barn is, and by the welcome we had. Gillian offered us a lovely and much needed cuppa (we'd just been to Go Ape, which by the way is just down the road) and chatted amiably with us, making us feel really welcome.

The room (we had the Lavender Room) was lovely. Great big comfy bed, comfy pillows and a nice bathroom. The only advice I'd have on this room is to ask Gillian or John for a quick lesson on how to put the velux window blind down. There's a knack apparently. We got back late at night and struggled with it for a while before giving up. Not a biggie at all, we just ended up waking a few hours earlier than we would have liked, only because of the morning light.

Breakfast was lovely! I'd recommend Gillan's homemade granola and John's homemade bread. Normally I avoid granola because it's so sweet but Gillian's recipe is perfect. We also had a vegan cooked brekkie, complete with veggiebangers, which set us up perfectly for a day of exploring.

Another thing I have to mention is the true star of Stowfield Barn, and that is Tess the dog. What a little, friendly cutie she is. She loves cuddles and when she wags, she wags her whole bottom! We loved her!!

This B&B was just lovely, so lovely in fact that we can't wait to go back. It's perfectly placed, just a few miles from Symonds Yat and all the activities available in the area. We visited Puzzlewood (where bits of Star Wars were filmed!!), which is just minutes away; Symonds Yat (great for walking and canoeing, etc) and Go Ape (needs no description!). We ate out at the Ostrich, just a short walk away from the B&B. I'd thoroughly recommend this pub. A lovely proper English pub, lovely beer garden, very friendly and great food. Extremely accommodating too if you have dietary requirements - just give them some notice.

Great stay, can't wait to come back. Thank you very much, Gillian, John and Tess!

We enjoyed a long weekend stay at Stowfield Barn B&B in August 2011. On arrival we were very pleasantly suprised at the beauty of the surrounding countryside and the gorgeous rustic barn. Our hosts, Jan, Ray & Julie gave us a warm and friendly welcome and throughout the weekend nothing was too much trouble. Our party (my Mum, Grandmother, 3 children aged 2,5 &10 and myself) occupied all the bedrooms which were spotlessly clean, recently rennovated and well equipped. During our stay we were made aware of lots of things to do locally (Puzzlewood, shopping in Monmouth and walking in the forrest to name but a few) and there was always someone on hand at the B&B with suggestions and directions! The B&B is very child-friendly and met the needs perfectly of our mixed age group. Before we left we enjoyed a delicious full-english breakfast of home-made museli & bread, jam made from fruit from the Stowfield Barn garden and locally sourced meat and eggs. There is real attention to detail and great value for money...we will definitely be back!

Booked a couple of nights here in order to go biking in the Forest of Dean, which is only a very handy five minute drive away. Really couldn't have asked for better. The room was lovely and clean, comfortable luxurious-feeling bed and nothing was too much of a hassle for the hosts. Perfect for people looking for a place to stay while exploring the great biking trails nearby. Able to lock my bike in their garage, was given a cup of tea when I woke in the morning and when I came back cold and tired after a day's cycling. Felt like being at home... Breakfast was incredible!! Locally sourced ingredients and homemade bread made by John himself set me up for the day of cycling. Entertainment was provided in the form of their lovely 10 month old golden Labrador. Would recommend and stay here myself again.

Brought my wife here for a weekend away. Jan and Ray were firstly extremely welcoming, and more than happy to show us around the property, which I would recommend as it is stunning.

The room was extremely comfortable, beautifully decorated, and a perfect base.

We were given keys to an external door so that we could come and go as we please.

The 2 mornings we ate with the other people staying there. This was a really enjoyable time as we sat for a while talking. The food itself was also extremely tasty.

the room we had had a shower over a bath, but in recognising the low ceiling may cause me a problem as I am tall, Jan advised me of an alternative bathroom i could use should i feel i need to.

Starting off with a bespoke Indian cookery lesson arranged by our host Jan, our weekend escape also included fantastic walks in beautiful countryside, delicious food, home-from-home comfort and great company. This is the perfect place to explore the forest or just chill out. We will definitely make this an annual event!

We stayed at Bramble Cottage. Cottage was nicely decorated and the location was good for walking. Not as welcoming to dog owners as expected. Paying over £500 for 3 nights specifically chosen as being dog friendly we didn’t expect on arrival to be told that our whippet was only allowed downstairs and not on any furniture. Also not impressed that on the second day we were approached by the owner (who you do see a lot of..) and berated for leaving our dog alone in the house for a couple of hours while we went shopping. She doesn’t suffer at all from separation anxiety so can only assume she was returning barks to the owners black lab who is very vocal.
So, I wouldn’t recommend if you want a home from home with your hound, if you do go then make sure you take toiletries as none provided.
I’m sure this set up will suit a lot of visitors but it definitely wasn’t for us.

We stayed with Gillian and John for two nights whilst we attended a wedding at Clearwell Castle.

THE GOOD
The barn conversion was beautifully decorated and very cosy (the land and house are equally as well maintained and beautifully done)
The room was equally as lovely with potentially the comfiest beds and best quilts I have experienced
The location is perfect with some lovely walks into the woods directly from their land
Gillian and John were extremely welcoming and friendly and couldn't have been more helpful
The breakfast was FANTASTIC (compliments to John the chef) they even kindly made us bacon sandwiches to go as we had to leave very early the third day.

THE BAD
Nothing! The only thing I would have changed is to have an eye level window in my bedroom as I like a little more natural light but the skylight would be perfectly sufficient for most and of course this should be expected with a barn conversion.

We stayed one week in one of the cottages. It was our first trip to the England and the Forest of Dean and the cottage was beyond our expectations. Everything you need is provided and the beds are very comfortable. Perfect location for day trips in cities and nature.
We had a warm welcome from John, Gillian and Tess (the B&B dog),who had some good recommendations for places to visit and eat. We would highly recommend this place to our friends and family and had a very good stay in Stowfield barn.

My partner and I stayed at Stowfield Barn for 4 nights over the Easter weekend and had a wonderful time. John and Gillian are passionate about the service they provide and made us feel so welcome.

We stayed in the Lavender Room. The bed was big and comfortable with high quality pillows and bedding. The bathroom had lovely toiletries to use and big fluffy towels. You couldn't have asked for more. The photos don't do the room justice as you cannot appreciate the lovely high ceilings until you are there.

As many other reviews have mentioned, breakfast is exceptional. We were contacted before we arrived to check whether we had any dietary requirements and we were offered lots of options when we arrived. I can highly recommend the delicious sausages and bacon which come from a local butcher. You certainly won't go hungry - we had enough for breakfast and lunch every day!

Later in the day Gillian also offered us all sorts of home made cakes to go with afternoon tea. What treats!

In the evenings we walked to The Ostrich. A great traditional pub with lots of atmosphere and friendly staff. I would highly recommend the steak and ale pie. John and Gillian lent us their high-vis jackets for the short walk home. We were glad we'd taken a torch too though.

The barn is in a beautiful setting and there is lots to do in the surrounding area. We particularly enjoyed walking the Wye Valley Path and Offa's Dyke (John can make recommendations and lend you the maps you need). We also enjoyed soaking up some history at Raglan Castle and Tintern Abbey. On one day we got the Pontypool - Blaenavon Steam Train to Big Pit where we had a free underground tour from an ex-miner. A really good day out and excellent value for money.

I can't recommend Stowfield Barn more highly. It really was an excellent stay with lovely hosts - passionate, professional and great company. Thank you John and Gillian (and Tess the dog!)
