Detailed Reviews
We arrived for our 1 night stay in August a little early, the hotel was very easy to find and had plenty of parking. We sat and waited (following the pre-arrival instructions) until 2.55 when I went in to see if we could get checked in. COVID precautions were all in place and well followed throughout our visit.
I checked in but was told that they were unsure if our room was available yet. I said that this was not a problem as I was a few minutes early. The receptionist kindly gave us both complimentary hot beverages in the bar.
At 3.15 we were given the keys to our Courtyard room. This was a very nice area and the room itself was spotless with every amenity we could need.
A fan, dressing gowns with slippers, good hairdryer, a high quality hospitality tray including a cafetiere and chilled water.
As it was our anniversary we were given a bottle of bubbles which was very kind.
We made the easy 10 minute walk into Truro for food, a very lovely city. On our return we both slept very well.
Breakfast was very nice. We were dining early (7.30) as we wanted to get to Newquay ahead of the crowds. We were one of the first in the dining room, the staff looked after us very well.
There was a good selection on offer and plenty of it. The Alverton breakfast was very nice (personally the potato cake was not to my taste) but all high quality and fresh.
Check out was seamless, overall a very good visit and we would definitely recommend and return.

The Alverton from the minute we turned into the entrance was just perfect. As soon as we got out the car a very nice staff member kindly checked to see where our room was and took our bags to our room whilst we checked in. In a time where the hospitality industry is on its knees and staff is a real struggle it’s clear staff here are well looked after as you see them at breakfast, lunch and dinner and they are so friendly and polite. They give good recommendations of things to do to. The rooms are lovely the only negative would be no full length mirror or air con for the hotter months but otherwise lovely rooms with modern well kept bathrooms and nice toiletries! Food great too, brilliant selection at breakfast and dinner was just excellent with a great all round menu to choose from. Location wise couldn’t have been better your never too far from any of the main tourist spots like Mevagissey, St Ives and Charlestown etc. It really is a lovely hotel which the management should be proud of their staff and how it operates. Thank you I can’t wait to come back one day soon!

Dear dworker1988, Wow, thank you for your lovely review. I'm so proud of the Alverton team and to hear they went above and beyond before you'd even checked in really does bring a smile to my face. I'm pleased you liked your room with modern well kept bathrooms and nice toiletries. There should be a full length mirror inside the wardrobe door and with the beautiful building being listed, we sadly cannot install air conditioning units, however fans are provided in the rooms and additional ones are available on request. It's great you chose to dine with us in the evenings and both dinners and breakfasts were excellent and a fantastic all round menu. Situated in central Cornwall, we are so fortunate to only be 20 minutes from both the North and South coasts and with ample carparking at the hotel it's easy for guests to come and go as they please and explore the hidden gems of Cornwall. We really appreciate your kind words and we look forward to welcoming you again soon. Best wishes Larissa Guest Relations Manager

We have been travelling to Truro for years and always wanted to stay, so we decided to treat ourselves for our first wedding anniversary.
The team at reception were welcoming and knowledgeable.
The bar and restaurant team were polite, helpful and couldn't do enough to accommodate us even when we booked for dinner last minute.
Our room was perfect. We stayed in the Courtyard and it was beautiful. A new and modern room but still with the classic courtyard country feel.
The bedding was fresh and soft and The White Company toiletries were a gorgeous touch.
Even with Covid-19 about we felt safe at all times. There was clear signage to tell us what was being done and what we needed to do to help keep the other guests safe.
There was lots of sanitiser stations and screens up where needed.
All of these precautions made us feel at ease but where done so tastefully it didn't ruin the charm of the hotel.
Thank you again and we can't wait to stay again.

If you want a stay that your room and bathroom is cleaned throughout your stay without having to have to escalate to a Supervisor, with room cups, glasses and T-spoons washed in a dishwasher, not the WC, don’t stay here.
If you want fine dining(as per Michelin standards) don’t eat here. E.g. Try 1984, No. 6, MINE,
If you want food products to be represented correctly I.e. golden syrup as such and not passed off as maple syrup, don’t stay here. Allergic people beware misrepresentations.
If you want cocktails advertising ‘pineapple juice’ to contain pineapple juice, don’t stay here.
If you want an establishment which is customer centric, empowering the staff to go the extra mile to right wrongs and service ,which is not delayed until a person holding all the authority is on shift, to abate any unfavourable reviews(which is part of a role, apparently), by ensuring your opinion aligns to theirs(since you cannot have your own opinion as a paying guest), then don’t stay here.
If you want true class and sophistication and a stay as per their website, stay @ The Scarlet Hotel, Newquay. as also recommended by A2B taxi drivers, who also serve, The Scarlet Hotel(with spa), Newquay Airport. and this place.

Dear Firich, We will not tolerate rudeness, shouting and disrespect to our team members who we hold in the highest regard. For the sake of clarity it is important (and I note you don’t mention this) that we explain that the hotel manager had to actually ask you to leave the hotel. We’ve never had to do this before. I think perhaps this speaks louder than your inaccurate review. We aim to exceed expectations and as team we have the best interests of our guests at heart and we are proud of the standards we achieve. That does not mean we are happy to be shouted at as (quote) “I am the customer therefore I can say what I want” I am disappointed you have then decided to leave a 1 star, factually incorrect, review. We do not have a Michelin star restaurant, nor do we pretend we do, however we do have a lovely restaurant with two AA rosettes, but we are fortunate to have some wonderful Michelin star restaurants in Cornwall. All of our bedroom cups, saucers, glasses and teaspoons are replaced daily and washed in our dishwasher/glass washer and we take dietary requirements very seriously. I do hope you enjoyed the rest of your holiday in Cornwall. Best wishes Larissa Guest Relations Manager

It has to be understood that there is, as far as I know, nothing else like The Alverton in Truro or, indeed in a wide area around. It does not rest on its deserved laurels but, at the same time, it is not flawless. We have stayed on all our visits in the Courtyard and we are already planning our next stay which should temper some of the comments which follow. The hotel is beautifully looked after and is in lovely grounds but steep paths within those grounds will not suit everybody especially in wet or icy conditions - which we have seen.
On this occasion the hotel, although not visibly crowded, was busy if the car park is anything to go by. The car park is quite spacious but the courtyard section could be better utilised if guests did not socially distance their cars.
We took dinner on the first night after a long day. The food, as we already knew, is very good but I think it could reasonably be described as overpriced whereas the room was sold at a reasonable rate. I can't fault the rooms though one should be aware that, in an old building with floorboards, one might 'enjoy' a soundtrack of guest activities above. We had elected daily housekeeping although we skipped it a couple of times. If The Alverton has a theme, it is inconsistency. This was reflected in the replenishments during housekeeping and at breakfast. On arrival, for example, there was no spare toilet roll. Requests, however, were met fully and promptly. At breakfast, where a decent menu was offered, you could never be quite sure how many butter pats you were you going to get or how much yoghurt would have made it into the granola pot.
Overall though, The Alverton is performing very well and in a compliant manner in these difficult days. You need to see it to appreciate it and once you do you will go back.
A final thought for the motorist as you are quite likely to arrive by car. The driveway is steep and winding with blindspots. Opposite direction traffic does not always drive with the care you might display. When leaving it can be challenging getting out on to the main road and the traffic won't be slowing down to let you out. Truro is a very good base from which to cover a large part of Cornwall and you won't find better than The Alverton.

Dear John O, Thank you for taking the time to write your review and as you have mentioned there is nothing quite like The Alverton Hotel. The grade II listed building has so many beautiful features such as large rooms, high ceilings, oak staircases and with this also comes the occasional creaky floorboard, but I hope this did not distract from an enjoyable stay? We are very fortunate to have a large car park behind the hotel offering complimentary parking for our guests and a team of porters available to help with luggage. Being set back on the hill side away from the road, the main drive does come out onto the duel carriageway which adds to the prime location, easy accessibility and the exit is helped by the traffic lights at the bottom of the road so thankfully it is a safe exit. Thank you for your feedback regarding the dinner, we try to use the freshest, locally sourced ingredients and our prices reflect this. I'm delighted to hear you enjoyed it and will pass this onto the kitchen team. The best value for dinner is to upgrade to the dinner, bed and breakfast package where guests can enjoy £35 worth of food for £30. I can only apologise that you felt The Alverton was inconsistent throughout your stay. As you can imagine the team has had to learn a new way of working in the current circumstances and please accept my apologies that there was not enough toilet roll, I have informed the housekeeping team and thank you for baring with us as we are still learning which is why your review is of immense importance to us. With your feedback and support we can continue to grow stronger and adapt to the new way of working whilst still maintaining our highest level of customer service. We do look forward to welcoming you again. With best wishes Larissa Hardy Guest Relations Manager

I stayed at the Alverton for two nights when down in Truro on business. The hotel is located on the dual carriageway as you drive south into Truro from the A30 or St Austell. As such you have to continue past the entrance and do a U-turn at the roundabout 200 yards further on.
The hotel is a converted convent and has plenty of exposed stone flagstones and stone mullioned windows. There is a large, free carpark and when I stayed plenty of spaces
At reception I was given a warm Cornish welcome as I was quickly and efficiently checked in. As is usual in properties with a past history my room was down a series of corridors and up several flights of stairs. The room was nicely furnished and spotless. Usual tea and coffee was provided but with the added bonus of home-made cookies and cafetiere coffee.
The bathroom was compact and had a wonderful over bath rain shower with a range of quality toiletries on offer. Towels were plentiful, thick and very soft
Breakfast was served in the main dining room on the ground floor. Unusually it was all waiter service from a comprehensive menu. No foraging at a buffet in this establishment
There was a good range of cereals, juices and cooked items on offer. Service was excellent and second pots of tea or coffee readily offered. However, the kitchen seemed to be incapable of grilling bacon to anything other than beyond crisp, though the accompanying scrambled eggs were excellent
The hotel was only slightly more expensive than the nearby Chain motel and represented excellent value. All the staff were friendly and very efficient
Would I use again when in Truro. If same value is on offer when I am next there then a resounding yes.

We were due to go to Greece, there was an issue when we were at the airport, we couldn’t go. We were in need of a break so had a look online for hotels in Cornwall and came across The Alverton. We booked immediately as it was the last room, and we were so glad that we did.
The only room that was available was the Elizabeth Suite, we walked to our room and down a private set of stairs leading to the only room on the ground floor. The room itself has a separate lounge area, a a lovely big bedroom. The bathroom has a walk in shower, which is easily the best shower EVER, it also had a separate bath.
The staff at the hotel are AMAZING, every member of staff we came into contact with were so polite, the level of customer service is probably the best I have ever experienced. I’d like to make a special mention to Reagan (sorry if I’ve spelt it wrong), Eliza & Poppy, they are an absolute credit to the hotel, going above and beyond, thank you.
Breakfast is table service, which there is a great variety and the service is fantastic.
We had dinner on our final evening, we had Chateaubriand…… it was mouth-wateringly delicious, the beef was so tender, a big thank you to the chef, thank you also to Eliza for arranging a lovely table along with drinks to be brought to thr table once we were seated.
I cannot fault this hotel at all, from the room to the staff to the food, everything was perfect, we cannot wait to return. ❤️

Dear Andrea L, Thank you for your fantastic review. I'm so pleased you stayed with us and had a wonderful visit. The Elizabeth Suite is lovely with the separate lounge and bedroom areas, views overlooking the garden and in your own words, the best shower ever! I can't wait to share this with the staff and I am so proud of The Alverton team. Reagan, Eliza and Poppy are such an asset to the hotel and I'll be sure to pass on your kind words. It's great to hear you had the mouth-watering, tender Chateaubriand. We have a very talented kitchen team and they will be thrilled to know how much you enjoyed it. We visited The Alverton for 2 days to celebrate our wedding anniversary in September. We had been given vouchers for its sister hotel in Falmouth, but as we work in Falmouth we decided that we would like to stay somewhere different. My wife contacted Hannah on reception who was very helpful & arranged our booking which involved 2 nights dinner bed & breakfast & a bottomless gin brunch.
Our stay was fantastic, the bottomless brunch was excellent, as was the food for dinner, as well as breakfast. Our room was garden view room, which was large with a beautiful bathroom with a bath & separate shower. Everything was spotless.
The staff were all very good & the covid protocols in place were very reassuring, there were hand sanitisers all around the hotel, & the staff wore face masks all the time.
We stay in hotels both in Cornwall & further afield a lot, & we would thoroughly recommend the Alverton, Jon & Nikki

Stayed for 4 nights on the special offer of £120 B&B any room (safe in the knowledge if we did have to cancel due to C-19 we could with short notice) Had a gorgeous garden view room, no 20. Huge bed, very spacious room and lovely bathroom. Hotel was very clean. It is clear they have paid special attention to detail with their cleaning routines. All staff in face coverings and enforcing guests wear them too which was very reassuring for everyone’s safety. Staff were all lovely and always cheerful, professional and helpful. Food was excellent (especially the chateaubriand.... A+++) wine and cocktail choices were also really good. Great access for disabled guests, parking, lift and access into hotel which we noticed as we already plan to return next year with parents who need disabled access. Highly highly recommend.

Dear KEJ0406, Thank you for your lovely review and for recommending the hotel. It's great to hear you describe your gorgeous garden view room with plenty of space and a lovely bathroom. The team have welcomed the new covid measures and we are classed as a covid secure hotel so I'm pleased the use of PPE didn't detract from a wonderful stay. The chefs will be thrilled to hear the Chateaubriand described as A+++! I'm pleased you also enjoyed the wine and delicious cocktail menus. We are fortunate to have a great location with ground floor access to our main areas and a large car park. We look forward to welcoming you again and your parents. With best wishes Larissa Hardy Guest Relations Manager

This was our second stay in the hotel. Our first being in September 2020. We loved the hotel on our visit but sadly our second visit just wasn’t as good. Our room on this occasion was one of The Courtyard Suites which are separate to the main hotel. The room itself was nice, spacious and the bathroom was modern. However, the standard double from our first stay was bigger and less expensive. So I wouldn’t say it is worth paying extra to upgrade your room.
When we stayed in June the weather was beautiful. This did mean that the room got very hot. In our bedroom the window was at a high level and could not be reached by hand to open it, unfortunately this meant the room was just too hot for us and we had no way to cool down. A fan was provided but it was very weak and old. We did end up buying our own fan from the local Argos.
We also found that the cleaning of the rooms became an issue during our stay. We would leave our room straight after breakfast each day and return around 4pm. Only on one occasion of our 7 night stay had the room been cleaned when we came back. On the second time when the room hadn’t been cleaned I did phone reception but only to be told the cleaner would get to us at some point. An hour later the room still hadn’t been cleaned I phoned reception again just to be told the same thing. We didn’t bother raising this again as clearly there was no point. Not having my room cleaned everyday doesn’t really bother me but it did mean that items weren’t replenished in the room ( water, coffee, toilet roll etc.) At one point we did have to hunt a cleaner down just to stock up on our toilet roll!
Lastly the service in the bar was very poor. On our previous stay in September 2020 there had been a lovely bar man who was very knowledgeable about all the drinks and very attentive. Unfortunately he was not there this time.Every time you wanted a drink you would have to call someone over. They never came to you first. If you tried to approach the bar to attract someone’s attention you were told to return to your table and someone would be over. I have to say the worst occasion was hearing one member of staff complain about the age of the guests and how they were hoping for some younger people. The service was also poor at breakfast.
Sadly the hotel just didn’t live up to the standards it had set on our previous visit. Although the issues may seem minor, for the price you are paying you wouldn’t expect any of these issues to occur.

Dear Hannah H, It is always nice to welcome our returning guests and thank you for choosing to stay at The Alverton again. I'm pleased you liked the classic double room in the main hotel that you had previously stay in. Both areas of the hotel are lovely but I do believe it is a personal preference as to whether a guest prefers the main building or the Courtyard and being a grade II listed building, each room is different. When booking directly through the hotel you are more than welcome to request the same room number as I know a lot of our regular guests choose to do this. All of the suites in the Courtyard are larger than the classic doubles so I'm wondering if you may have had a complimentary upgrade during your stay in September? I'm pleased when you stayed in June the weather was beautiful and I hope this made for an enjoyable holiday exploring Cornwall. The historic stone walls do retain the heat and some rooms can become quite warm which is why we do provide fans. This was the first warm spell we'd had this year so we have since purchased more fans, replaced the older ones and have spares available so I'm sorry to hear that you felt the need to purchase your own. Please accept my apologies that during your stay you had some housekeeping issues. This is very disappointing to hear and especially after you had mentioned it to the team and it still was not serviced. In regards to the breakfast and bar, we are still providing table service to ensure our guests and staff are as safe a possible. However, the service should have been to the high level we are continually praised for and not at all what you had experienced during your stay. I understand you stayed with us in June and having just open the hotel on the 17th May following 5 months of closure, we had a few new members of staff who were training and I'm sure, from the comment you have mentioned that the person in question is no longer working for the company as the feedback I receive and as you can read from previous reviews, the team continually deliver the highest level of customer service and I am very proud to work with them. All of your feedback will be discussed with the heads of department to ensure we are on the right path and continually growing as a hotel and acting upon our guests valuable feedback to make changes where necessary. Would you kindly email me mystay@thealverton.co.uk with your name and date of your stay so I can discuss this further with you and reassure you that the hotel is running to the high level you experienced in September. I look forward to hearing from you. Best wishes Larissa Guest Relations Manager

Taxi or bus. Taxis regularly at the station. There is a Park and Ride bus directly opposite the station that will take you to The Old Ale House and it's a short walk from there.
I didn’t go in any of these so unable to help, sorry
Good Afternoon AEPat,
There is plenty of parking located within the grounds of the Hotel.
Kind regards,
Chris
