A handsome, ivy-clad 18th century building, once a private bank, overlooking the River Ouse and yet right on the edge of the town centre. Its atmosphere balances that of a boutique townhouse hotel and a bustling, relaxed, traditional inn. 24 beautiful air-conditioned bedrooms with luxurious bathrooms. Fine but informal restaurant, twice winner of AA award for best wine list in the UK. Also wine shop with 'enomatic' tasting machines, bar with real ales, and free wifi.

Detailed Reviews
My Wife and I got married at The Old Bridge recently and do not regret our choice of venue for an instant.
Before the big day, when asked about the location, every time we mentioned The Old Bridge we were told how fantastic it is there and how well we'd picked, and yet none of this was enough to prepare us for just how amazing it really is.
The venue itself has so much character and charm, and the Oak Panel room we were lucky enough to get married in was just beautiful, and full of history. The rest of the building is a pleasure to explore, new corners opening themselves up.
Sometimes at higher end venues food portions can be disappointing, but not in the case of The Old Bridge. Not only were our guests wide eyed with anticipation for the clear quality, but really able to treat themselves with the impressive portions. And a whole pavlova mountain each!
The only thing to eclipse either of these fantastic qualities The Old Bridge has, is the staff. Every one of the staff we and our guests interacted with were so friendly and accommodating, but two really deserve a special mention.
Lauren was our planner and guide through the often, and understandably stressful time of planning a wedding. Lauren made us feel at ease and in control of our big day, and guided us through all of our options without ever feeling like she was stepping on our toes or limiting our options, whilst always being very understanding and flexible with certain requirements for my wife (e.g. Onion and garlic allergy). She delivered a very personal touch to our preparations and always felt like she was there whenever we needed her to be.
The Second mention is Cyril, our Master of Ceremonies. We really didn't know what to expect from Cyril. We thought it was simply the person announcing food and such. But wow were we wrong. From the moment we were on site Cyril was attentive to our every need, many of which we didn't even know we had! Cyril greeted us, and all of our guests, with such warmth and sincerity that very quickly felt like another member of the family at the wedding. His sense of humour tailored to each seamlessly, and as a result I heard fantastic stories of Cyril from all corners of the wedding party, young to old, English to Portuguese. This man is a true USP of the Old Bridge and we can not thank him enough for the service he gave us on our unforgettable wedding day.
Thank you so much to the whole team at The Old Bridge, and we wholeheartedly recommend anyone to visit, or to get married.

We stayed in room 33 on the ground floor, behind the restaurant, because my wife has mobility issues and stairs would have been difficult, however, the room is lovely. It's 'old world charm' with a modern twist with a very good large bed, good wardrobe and chairs and large flat panel TV. Modern sockets with three pin and USB, air-con, tea and coffee facilities and fresh milk available and not those horrible milk jiggers. Views out onto a courtyard and the Great River Ouse meandering in the middle ground. Charming doesn't come close.
The bathroom is almost excellent with large and thick fluffy towels and a range of toiletries. The shower is over the bath, which if you have mobility issues can be difficult, and it has a very smart shower system fitted but it's very difficult to get the temperature right whilst watching very hot water wash away down the plughole.
Parking is very easy and right by the building. And for us the best moment came when breakfast arrived. First a great big pot of tea and sourdough toast with Netherend Farm butter, OMG delicious. You could almost cancel the rest of breakfast and just eat toast and butter. My wife had scrambled eggs and smoked salmon with creme fraiche, and a good portion too, I had the Full English minus hash browns, black pudding and tomatoes because I would not have eaten them. Flat meadow mushroom with amazing smoked back bacon, fried egg and beans. I just want to go back and eat that all again. Delicious.
Oh, and the staff are all so friendly it's like you have always known them but then lost your memory but they still know who you are.

Really excellent. From the lady who took my booking (genuinely pleased to point me to a half price deal) to the reception staff, bar staff, waiting staff, can't fault them. Someone in the kitchen knows what they're doing and someone on the design team knows how to make a comfy room. Room well thought out, lovely toiletries. Bar very cosy and welcoming. Evening meal, Sunday steak night, extremely well offered. Great steak cooking, simple accompaniments. Wine list also friendly and not too expensive. Breakfast outstanding, and I don't say that lightly. We will certainly stay again if in the area and recommend.

I initially called to book a Sunday lunch on the 2nd of March for 10 people and happily paid the £100 deposit. I inquired about a birthday cake for a 60th celebration and was informed that you do not provide cakes but could offer a plate with a message. I then asked if I could bring my own cake and was told no.
A few days later, I called to increase the booking to 20 people. This is where the service issues really started. I was informed that for parties of 15+ people, we would need to pre-order, pay an additional £100, and would not be able to sit together. I asked if there was a quieter area we could use to avoid disturbing other diners but was told no—unless we booked a private room for £200. I requested more details and was told someone would call me back.
The next day, I followed up and was transferred to the events team. I was then told the private room would actually cost £290, not £200. When I questioned the discrepancy, the response was simply "I don’t know" with no apology. I was also told that if I didn’t book immediately, the room would be opened to general diners. At this point, I questioned why I wouldn’t just take a corner of the main dining area instead.
I was further informed that we would have to switch to a different menu that included drinks. When I asked why since we do not drink, I was told it was simply due to cost.
Frustrated by the experience, I called back that evening and cancelled the booking. The response? A simple "OK" no questions asked about why I was cancelling. I then booked elsewhere with a venue that actually wanted the business.
The overall attitude from both reception and the events manager were dismissive, almost as if I should feel privileged to dine there. When I called to speak with a manager, I was told they were too busy and that all complaints must be submitted via email.

Although food prices were at the top end of the local scale, so was the quality of the food, so we had d eaten here many times over the years. We moved away just before covid, and this was our first trip back, and we actually stayed here for the first time. It's an old building – a converted bank – and the public rooms have been beautifully (and comfortably) modernised.
Our bedroom (No 6) was a strange mixture of old and new; with no lift, access was not easy – either up and down a convoluted series of rather tired narrow staircases, or the staff shortcut up a a short flight of concrete back stairs . There was a central air conditioning unit in the ceiling which worked fine, but the (quite large) room had seven or eight lights scattered about, which all need to be turned off or on separately - and you couldn’t reach any of the switches from the (faux 4 poster ) bed - a rather creaky bed frame with four poles sticking up from the corners, probably designed to appeal to Americans visiting old “Yirp”. Effective secondary glazing cut the noise from the road outside right down, but the large and well-appointed bathroom needed some attention to creaky floorboards (an hour’s job) and gurgling pipes. Saying “It’s an old building” doesn’t cut it as an excuse.
The restaurant has got a bit carried away with the “atmospheric “ lighting to the point where I needed a torch to read the menu, and someone in the kitchen had spent so much time assembling a twee Instagrammable Jenga tower with my Hake that it was stone cold and went back. Priorities? Or a sign of the social media times? The second attempt was perfect. Wine list was predictably expensive, but didn’t seem quite as interesting as I remember. Both front and back of house staff were a credit to the place, and it was nice to hear that even the temporary bar staff serving sacks had been given an unusual amount of training. Well done, somebody!
Overall, the high prices set a high bar for expected standards, that the room itself didn’t reach, although the restaurant came closer.

The Old Bridge has always been my go-to location for business lunches.
Unfortunately, the service and food quality has slipped.
Visited this week for a lunch with clients and had the Christmas menu, and it was poor. The celeriac soup was tasteless, the feather of beef was more fat than beef, and the roast turkey was dry with very below par vegetables and a meagre quantity of gravy on the plates that led one guest to ask for extra for the table. The hash brown with the beef was so overdone it was rather unpleasant and full of grease.
The service was slow - yes it was busy, but it always is at this time of year - and when there was service, the staff reached across us, and interrupted without waiting for the opportunity to speak. This may sound old-fashioned, but these habits were always followed before and seemed to have slipped over the past year.
I asked for bread for the table and was told that they had run out of bread and that all they had was bread to go with the soup and 2 minutes later it was delivered to the table before the starters appeared. Good job there was some though, because the soup was inedible. How can you run out of bread?!
In fairness to the wait staff, when the starters were cleared, I was asked whether the soup was OK, and I chose not to make a fuss, so said in a rather lacklustre manner that it was fine. The full bowl spoke volumes.
Sadly, this isn't the first below par experience of the year so I shall be seeking out an alternative 'go-to' venue for my client meetings in 2025.

Very good service with a smile but disappointed again with my recent visit. The last time that I came to The Old Bridge was in the Summer for lunch with my goddaughter, just after when it had changed hands to new owners I think? Although I couldn’t fault the service or quality of the food the portion size of our lunches were really very disappointing, more like starter size portions at the price of a main! We left hungry! Nevertheless I gave it another try this morning with family for coffee and cake. Sadly they do not serve any kind of scones on the menu at coffee time, which is disappointing as it is a healthier choice for many people, especially diabetics, who cannot have sugary or creamy cakes. Instead we chose homemade crumpets from the menu which sounded lovely, and again a healthier choice. What was produced was definitely not a crumpet! They looked like overcooked dark scones, absolutely zero bubbles, so clearly not a correctly yeasted crumpet recipe and inside they were sticky, dense and unpleasantly cloying as though they had not been cooked enough. They certainly didn’t resemble any crumpet that I’ve either eaten or made myself. Thankfully our order was changed without a fuss.
In the past also The Old Bridge used to offer Rooibos tea, sadly no longer. This would be an easy thing to reintroduce for us caffeine allergic customers who want something that resembles a real cup of tea without having to resort to chemically Decaffinated tea which can come with its own side effects. Every time that I have visited I have asked for Rooibos only to be disappointed. This is such a small thing that can easily be rectified, even if the chefs cannot cook a traditional crumpet!

Response from James McFarlane, General Manager at The Old Bridge
Responded 8 Feb 2024
Hello Elizabeth I am sorry to hear you left feeling disappointed following your recent visit to The Old Bridge. You are correct, we choose not to serve scones in the morning and prefer to serve them in the afternoon. We do not want to have them made early in the morning and then sat about all day, we much prefer them to be fresh each afternoon. I can only apologise if the crumpets were not as they should be, I am pleased that they were changed without fuss - we will of course make mistakes from time to time but will always react positively to any issues. I have worked at the hotel for many years and cannot recall ever offering rooibos tea, certainly something we may consider doing in the future. I hope we are able to see you one afternoon for delicious homemade scones. Best wishes James McFarlane

I love this place but on this occasion the service was not a good as previous reviews I have written, where the service been outstanding.
Drinks ordered but the waitress standing at the end of the table doing that “who ordered the xx”
Chap that served us, whilst pleasant, was not as personable as previous staff, just felt that he didn’t really want to be there.
The food was excellent.
For anyone wanting to take a celebration cake, a charge of £5 per head is made if you cut it and eat it there.
Just felt this was a little expensive if desserts were ordered.

Responded 16 Jun 2024
Hello Sarah W I am pleased you have had several good experiences at The Old Bridge and can only apologise if this time we did not quite deliver the standards required. I do not see any issues with the bartender asking who ordered what drink, I would much rather that than guessing and giving people the wrong drinks. The service should always be personable, so i will certainly be speaking to the team about that. The cake charge only applies if you do not have pudding, if you order pudding and have your own cake then of course there is no charge. I hope we are able to see you again soon. Kind regards James McFarlane

A really nice stay
Not a 5 because the room suffered from kitchen and extractor noise until quite late. Also for some reason you have to request marmalade at breakfast (butter is on the table).
The staff re very good and obviously very well trained. Whoever is responsible for this deserves congratulations.

This hotel is faultless, we came here yesterday ( January ) as we got married at the registry office, we had booked a few of the rooms out too, nothing was too , nothing was too
Much trouble from the heating to the music we’d like to listen to in the background everything was catered for! The whole team was amazing. Alison is a true asset to this hotel and is so professional, we’d like to thank the whole team for the excellent service and experience we received for our special day.

Thank you
Hello Kellie.
Residents and others using the hotel (for a meal) can fish from our jetty, if they just let us know. But no fishing allowed for others.
Thanks very much
John Hoskins
