The Bishopstrow Hotel & Spa garners praise for its luxurious amenities, notably the spa and comfortable rooms, despite some disruptions from refurbishments. Its charm-laden atmosphere, blending luxury with eclectic touches, provides a unique and inviting stay. While generally lauded for spacious, plush rooms, a few minor maintenance concerns are noted. The picturesque location offers both tranquility and convenience.
Service is commended for being friendly and attentive, although not without occasional lapses. Cleanliness is a standout feature, especially in the spa and grounds. Opinions on value vary, with some guests finding the experience worth the expense and others less convinced.

Detailed Reviews
We loved this hotel! Upon arrival we were greeted warmly and shown to our rooms. It felt as though nothing would be too much trouble. I asked for fresh milk and quite soon this was delivered to our room. The bedroom was spacious, with a large comfortable bed and a settee to watch television if desired. The second room also accommodated a settee which was a bed settee and was not very comfortable. This room opened onto a small patio area which, in summer, would be a delightful, private place to relax. The roomy bathroom had a walk in shower with separate bath and two washbasins. Also provided daily were fresh bathrobes and towels. The toiletries provided were of high quality and a pleasure to use. Our room was close to the spa and this was very convenient.
Two sitting rooms with open fires were inviting and cosy.
The dining room is pleasantly decorated and there is a choice of eating either in the main restaurant or the conservatory. Service is excellent and the staff are attentive, The restaurant manager is efficient, friendly and unobtrusive. The menus are creative and the food is cooked and prepared with thought and imagination. but a 12% service charge is automatically added to the prices which are certainly not cheap.
The breakfast menu is also tempting especially if eggs are your choice. However, some cold fish or meat would be a good addition. Also, It was not until the second day that we realised that there were other choices available on the reverse of the menu. Perhaps this could be pointed out to diners?
It was very pleasant to swim in the outdoor heated pool and then dip into the hot tub. Even in the rain! The massage treatment was extremely therapeutic and expertly administered.
This hotel is undergoing alterations. The decorators were working in some areas and the artwork is being changed. Staying in autumn is a different experience to staying in summer so perhaps we will return next year for another enjoyable break.

Four family members from different parts of the country met up at this gorgeous hotel. What a find. The location was perfect for all of us and we stayed in a huge junior suite with extremely comfortable beds and a very large bathroom with walk in shower and stand alone bath. The room was very clean and big enough to accommodate four people comfortably. We were greeted with a chilled bottle of wine on arrival. We were able to enjoy all the spa facilities- outdoor heated pool and hot tub, indoor pool and jacuzzi, steam room, sauna, relaxation room and a treatment each. The therapists were lovely and made you feel very relaxed. All the staff were very polite and helpful and the room service (in the evening) was good with the staff more than happy to provide more milk and ice. Nothing was too much trouble. The breakfast menu had a good variety of tasty dishes and was eaten looking out over the extensive grounds. All in all a beautiful hotel, we will definitely be coming back. Thank you

My husband and I selected to stay at Bishopstrow for our wedding anniversary, on the way to Cornwall.
From the second we arrived, we had a wonderful time. The staff were friendly and very helpful. The hotel had only just reopened when we arrived, but the only way you could tell that was from the paint touch ups and decoration going on around us. The staff were a well oiled machine, and there was no sense that they hadn't been doing this for months.
Breakfast was a delight and we were served by the lovely Camilla, who brought me an alternative option for the breakfast continental plate when I mentioned allergies. I enjoyed it so much (coconut chia pudding) that the next day she brought me an extra! I really recommend ordering the cauliflower hash browns - what a dish and only wish I could work out how to make them myself!
On our wedding anniversary itself, we ate at the hotel and were predominately served by Mark. Mark was funny, entertaining and a great host, talking to us about his sommelier experience and telling us wonderful stories throughout the night.
I'd also like to specifically call out Bethany and Liz who were our spa therapists, who helped us completely relax. My skin still looks exceptional from the facial!
The hotel itself is being refreshed, and we loved the outside pool with the stunning orange surroundings and beautiful flowers. Some of the hotel spaces need some maintenance, but it was clear when we were visiting that they were working hard at this, and in no way does it stop the hotel from being a beautiful, peaceful space. Our room was a junior suite, with double doors onto a small patio and we thoroughly enjoyed sitting out there enjoying some champagne (prior to the rain!).
I highly recommend staying at the Bishopstrow. The hotel and grounds are beautiful, but it's everyone who works here who made this a wonderful holiday and a great place to stay.

Dear bekahjade22, Thank you for such a delightful review. I will make sure I speak to Kamilla, Bethany and Liz to pass on your positive feedback. The chia puddings are a great start to breakfast and if you would like to have the recipe for the cauliflower hash browns then please do not hesitate to send me a note and as Jon our Head Chef would be delighted to talk you through how to make these at home. Thank you for recommending the hotel to others, it certainly makes the hard work from the team worthwhile. We look forward to seeing you back with us very soon.

We stayed at The Bishopstrow Hotel for 2 nights earlier this month and it was a lovely place to stay.
We booked one of the Junior suites as we took our 4 year old son. The room was large with a double bed and 2 single beds in it, plus a sofa area with a TV. The room itself was a little tired but very clean and more than suitable for 2 nights. The hotel had left a tee-pee with fairy lights, a colouring-in pack and a bedtime story for our son which was a lovely touch.
The hotel itself is a lovely old building and the new owners have created a gorgeous terrace which we took full advantage of in the sunshine... breakfast, coffee, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner were all served on the terrace and it was a thoroughly relaxing atmosphere. When the sun was out it almost felt as though you could be abroad somewhere.
We used the swimming pool and jacuzzi which were both clean, enjoyable and not too busy, we were even able to take our son to the swimming pool between certain hours in the morning and afternoon which he loved. We didn't make it to the outside pool but it looked lovely, freshly painted and cared for. My husband and I also booked a treatment at the spa, both of which were excellent.
We used the hotel as a base to go to Longleat Safari on one of the days as it was only about 15 minutes away. Longleat was fantastic and well worth a visit.
All in all, the hotel was great, friendly staff with a can do attitude and they went out of their way to make you feel at home. It was a little busy on the first night as it was the first night of being open for the new owners, but I'm certain these were only teething issues. I would fully recommend staying here.

We stayed here for three nights. We were first given a room near the tennis courts that were very gloomy but peaceful. We than changed to room 7 in the house which was brighter and spacious. Negatives: The Staff door, under our room window, banged constantly from 7am onward each morning! (I suggest they put a soft- close door on). The shower is on go-slow and the hairdryer needs to be looked at. The restaurant menu is very sparse. There are no lifts. Positives: All the staff were friendly, attentive and helpful. The bed was comfortable. The grounds are interesting. The pools are both clean, warm and well laid out with plenty of sun beds. Nice hot tub and a couple of Domes to eat/read in if the weather turns rainy. Breakfast was good, hot & plentiful, with an additional slate of tasty treats to start with. Public toilets are clean and tidy. Parking is very good. The lounge & library are wonderful and comfortable. The new owners are renovating it gradually, so we will wait in anticipation for our next visit when the alterations are complete. The 'treat bag' on leaving was a nice touch too - thank you

Dear Diane S, Thank you for your review, I have managed to address the issues raised with the room, thank you for bringing them to my attention. With regard to the menu, I am sorry that you found the menu to be sparse in terms of choice, this is the first time we have had this feedback as normally the choice and menu selection is regarded as a highlight of the restaurant. Thank you for also bringing to everyone's attention the many highlights of your stay and noting the little touches such as the departure goodies. Do come and visit us soon to see the other many exciting developments.

We went there in February 2022 in the middle of the big cluster storm ….fearing for the worst but got the very best we didn’t think we would have. Upgraded to the jacuzzi suite, with our private hot tub in the private terrace, a glass in our hand and counted the stars above our heads… our daughter was so happy too! The room was newly refurbished to a high standard, the double shower bathroom was very well appointed, with many mod con gadgets such as Dyson hair dryer to make it a luxurious stay.
The room has direct access to the outdoor pool too but it was too cold to venture for most. We don’t need anything else as the hot tub was such a joy!
The indoor pool was heated and very relaxing. White towels are provided for all guests. This is absolutely great for family time if you look for relaxation and fun.
Breakfast was served (ie no buffet), portions are small but everything on the table are top quality from warm bread, pastries to the beautifully cooked food. Service is discreet, friendly, polite and attentive.
We also had dinner in the hotel during our three day stay. Food was lovely and service was good… we felt really blessed to have a wonderful stay even when it was raging outside!
When we had a window to go out and about, there were so many choices. We went to Mells for a day it was like a time capsule there… beautiful and peaceful… the hotel ground is also just lovely for walks they have wellies for hire too.
All in all, it is highly recommended but this didn’t come cheap, if you have a cause to celebrate, this is a good choice!

The courtyard bedrooms are noisy by others using the area, dogs are kept in these rooms and you can hear them too and you can hear people trampling around upstairs, slamming doors, talking and laughing and sometimes the water being turned on. The MAIN hotel is very warm and welcoming, good food and snacks available to buy with a 12.5% service charge added to your bill, you can ask for it to be removed before paying. Tips are not expected to be paid by customers or people staying at the hotel. as the service charge is in place already. Staff are brilliant, the Receptionists were excellent before our arrival and whilst there. All details are in the room when you get there.
This is a 4 star hotel, the price is horrendous, I got it on a special offer and it was still horrendous, but it was in an area we wanted. Afternoon tea is £29 for one person, food is all freshly made though, you get what you pay for. The meals are expensive, the bar meals for what there was, were even more pricier than expected. If you get a hotel deal, the price inside is even more expensive than what you see on the outside.
In general though, its all very clean and no cobwebs at eye level or above, The beds are very clean and the bedding is excellent. The beds have rock hard mattresses.
The lighting swtiches take a bit of work to understand, but keep pushing buttons and you'll get a light come on, maybe not the one you want.
The rooms have complimentary tea and coffee Pods and a machine, there is also complimentary water bottles in the rooms too, which are topped up if you choose rooms to be cleaned while you stay.
The Spa is in good shape, the outdoor pool is open all year around, but this time its closed due to maintainence and painting, but the outdoor jacuzzi is open and was working, although everyone said it was cold water. I didn't try it. The hot tub was amazing indoors next to the pool which was cooler than expected but at least you can swim in it, unless you're 6ft plus and then banging your knees on the bottom is most likely to happen.
There is a state of the art Exercise machine studio, which I didn't try, but it looked good.
Didn't have a treatment but in the past, they have been excellent.
Prices for treatments are extremely pricey, but if you book on the day there are money off packages available.
Breakfast doesn't matter what time you get in at, they still have everything on the menu. Its all table service.
Value for money is low.

Dear Radicol2001, Thank you for your in depth review following your recent visit with us. It reads that most of your experience with us was great, but i of course apologise your room was a little noisy. I am however confused by the value for money comments that are mentioned on numerous occasions, from reading the review we offer everything and more you would expect from a 4 star hotel and you highlight this yourself, referring to the service, food and facilities that we have an offer and them all being very good, so i am naturally saddened you felt the need to mention this. Thank you again for taking the time to leave a review and i do hope we can welcome you back again.

Just spent a super relaxed spa break at this elegant establishment. The fabulous Christmas decorations made us wish we were staying on to enjoy the festive season. The service in the hotel and spa was invariably most attentive and polite. The breakfast menu offered a terrific choice to set you up for the day and the evening meal was equally delicious although the range of vegetables available was limited. Our junior suite was well worth the upgrade although we were disappointed when the yummy handmade biscuits were not resupplied on the second day. We had booked 4 spa treatments well ahead of time and all, but the overpriced pedicure, were excellent. However, we were frustrated that demand for treatments is so high that, even as residents of the hotel, we were not able to avail ourselves of any further spa services after our arrival. We would definitely recommend Bishopstrow and hope to return sometime very soon.

In years past Bishopstrow was a second tier country house hotel that slipped slowly and gracefully into decrepitude. Its new owners have put some life back into it, stripped away layers of chintzy decor, and have gone for a rather chicly shabby look. We were quite surprised by how casual it all was. I speculate that their inspiration is the hugely successful mini-chain of Pig hotels.
We stayed just the one night en route from Norfolk to Cornwall. We had booked a ‘roomy room’ and as members of Small Luxury Hotels we had hopes of an upgrade which wasn’t offered. Instead we were given a newly renovated room on the top floor. It was verging on the characterful with many wooden beams and a rather chinoiserie style of decor. We had an excellent bathroom, with a shower in the tub, and all the amenities you need, even including a Dyson hairdryer.
As the hotel is still a work in progress, there was noise from workmen at about 8am as the room immediately below us was getting the full treatment. This didn’t bother us too much as we planned to check out by 9am.
Downstairs the reception rooms are seriously stripped back - this isn’t remotely a luxury hotel. There is a pleasant outdoor terrace with interesting topiaries. The restaurant is more of a fancy cafe these days with a dinner menu offering variations of ‘pub grub.’ We didn’t foresee ourselves eating dish and chips for dinner but that is what we did. And pretty good it was, too. A pity that breakfast wasn’t on the same level.
We also had a swim in the indoor pool which was a good size and well-heated. A plus point, certainly in cold weather, is that the pool can be reached directly from your room without going outside.
Service levels were high and done with great charm. We paid £217 for bed and breakfast and that, we felt, was astonishing value for money these days.

Good afternoon, thank you for taking the time to leave us a review- we are most grateful. With SLH memberships the room upgrades are subject to availabilty. On this occasion, we had no larger rooms available and we personally felt that we wanted you to stay in one of our newly refurbished rooms. We are undergoing a full hotel renovation project, including all of our guest bedrooms and we have now completed 12 out of 32 rooms. Where possible we are allocating guests into our newest rooms first, as these transformation are truly incredible and we simply want to show these rooms off. Our hotel is set to be transformed fully in the next few years and we are doing what we can whilst the hotel remains open and without causing too much distruption. We do feel that design of rooms is a matter of taste, and I am sorry you feel that the downstairs reception rooms are stripped back and not what you feel is luxury. I am glad you were able to utilise the indoor pool whilst staying with us and that you felt the hotel was a good value for money.

We have just spent 2 nights at this beautiful hotel. The facilities are amazing, a lovely outdoor heated pool, indoor pool, jacuzzi and spa. Unfortunately when we checked in, the roomy room we were given (15) was not what we were expecting having seen pictures on the website. It was bland, old fashioned and depressing. My husband couldn’t fit under the shower either. Thankfully the lovely lady on reception sorted out another room for our second night. That was room 3, and it was everything we imagined it would be, with huge bathroom, separate shower and roll top bath. Room 15 is not in the same league and at £279 per night it’s just not worth the price. Moving on from that, our evening meal was delicious and we were given 2 glasses of champagne free due to the room problem, which was a kind gesture. Service exceptional. Breakfast again was perfect, lots of choice, beautifully cooked and great service again. We used the outdoor pool both days and loved it. The facilities are excellent, and the setting is so peaceful. The lounges again were beautifully elegant and very comfortable. But best of all are the staff. They are all so friendly and welcoming, they are a credit to the hotel. This place really deserves a 5 but I had to give a 4 because of our first room. We enjoyed it very much and would totally recommend it

Dear Adelef1fan, Thank you for your review. I am sorry that the first room didn’t quite hit the mark. All of our rooms are very individual in terms of size and décor but I am very pleased to read that we managed to rectify this so quickly. I am glad you found the rest of the facilities to be excellent with service to match. We look forward to welcoming you back soon and receiving 5/5!

Hi,
The dog is welcome in the grounds/gardens but not within the walled area surrounding the outdoor pool
Yes it is and it is wonderful.
