Guyers House Hotel offers a picturesque setting that many guests appreciate, complete with tranquil gardens and a charming atmosphere ideal for exploring the surrounding areas. However, there's a consensus among travelers that rooms feel outdated and sometimes unclean, with refurbishment needed. While the hotel's cleanliness generally earns praise, issues with disorganized service and long waits detract from the experience.
Reviewers frequently note the hotel as overpriced, criticizing the dining options, service fees, and poor value. Despite the serene environment, the hotel's amenities and service often fall short of expectations.

Detailed Reviews
We had a 4 night stay here with friends.
Positives: the hotel is beautiful with lovely landscaped grounds ( including a croquet lawn and resident visiting heron) and surrounding countryside to walk in. The staff are very friendly and very helpful. Rooms ( in the old building) were quaint and as you would expect from a house of this age, but very comfortable and with all the amenities you would want. The food was hot and tasty when it arrived and they catered well for vegetarian and gluten free.
The downsides: As in Jeremy's review below- we were the table waiting for the gluten free bread. The service in the dining room either at dinner or breakfast was erratic and often non existent depending who was on duty. One busier night there were 3 experienced ladies on duty and the service was excellent. Other than that it tended to be young staff apparently lacking guidance.
We appreciate that the hotel had only been open a few weeks and they were still struggling to get their chef back but the menu was repetitive and not very imaginative- especially with limitations of veggie or gluten free. On our 4th night of looking at the same rehashed menu, the duty manager agreed to refund our dinner cost and we went out to eat instead locally. This was not a reflection on the food itself but on the creativity and range of the menu. If you are offering packages of more than 2 nights you need to take this into account.
If they can get this sorted the hotel is ideally located and well worth the stay.

Thank you Bansteadfamily for taking the time to share your review on your recent visit to Guyers House Hotel. I am proud to hear that you found our team friendly and helpful and that you had a comfortable stay with us. We have a young team who we are working with closely to train and provide guidance into improving our service standards, I apologise that the service varied during your stay, I will highlight this within our team training sessions. Our newly appointed Head Chef is in the process of offering a more creative menu, so we cater better for dietary needs, I am sorry that we weren't able to offer this at the time of your stay. We are also providing our team with allergen training so they understand the importance of dietary requirements and allergens. We do hope you will choose to stay with us again and see that we have made progress on your concerns raised.

My wife and I have just completed a three night stay at Guyers House since it changed hands in August.
I’m delighted to say that nothing discernible has changed since we last visited the hotel in June this year.
We have been regular patrons of the hotel for many years and keep returning to enjoy the excellent hospitality and good food offered by the hotel for a very reasonable price. The hotel is in a beautiful location surrounded by its own grounds within easy reach of local historic towns and enchanting countryside.
The staff are excellent and the rooms are very comfortable.
I must make a special mention of Glyn the gardener and grounds man who has been maintaining the garden at Guyer’s for many years. The garden is an integral part of the charm of this hotel and Glyn’s exemplary efforts reflect in the beauty and productivity of the garden.
Not only is the garden a joy to behold but produces fruit vegetables and flowers for the enhancement of the menu and the appearance of the public rooms.
Glyn is a real asset to the hotel with his wide horticultural knowledge and experience, which he’s happy to share as I’ve found . His efforts are reflected in the love he brings to the garden.
He’s also a jolly nice chap to talk to.

+1
The inside of the room where we had breakfast (if you can call it a breakfsat) had a stained carpet and chairs, staff were not as attentive as would have liked, we waited 20 minutes and had to ask for a coffee and a tea at breakfast, and breakfast selection was very poor. We understand the restaurant is under refurbishment, but we're told the Continental Breakfast would consist of a selection of hams and cheeses, breads, fruit, pastries, what we experienced was far from that...on day 1 salami and cheese, old croissants, youghuts, a few slices of melon, cereal and dried fruit and a fruit bowl...not so bad.
Day2...The same sliced packet cheese, and 1 slice of Salami, We asked if there was more and were told that nothing else was available as they were "waiting for the delivery" the lady did in the end offer us some smoked salmon, there was also the same old croissants, some cereal and 4 yoghurt in a bowl of ice. The breakfast was a big problem for us. If you know your kitchen is being refurbished, and you offer a continental breakfast, you plan accordingly. This was very poor
Another problem was the bed, an old bed that had been joined together which moved treably whenever one of us moved making it almost impossible to sleep.
The heating in the room is also not under your control. The radiators in the room and bathroom were on full and could not be turned down. We were so hot we tried to sleep without the duvet. Unbearable.
There was only one bedside cabinet, and we had to use a chair to make a temporary one. And no plug sockets near the bed. They were on the opposite side of the room. Also, lighting was tooooo bright. There were two lamps, but one was next to the bed whilst the other was on the unit on the opposite side of the room, so we didn't use it.
The £25 dog charge per night. They give a free dog toy and treats for our dog, and a bed with 3 pooh bags, but I'm sorry, just doesn't sit right with me, I think 25£ is excessive for a dog per night that you have to leave in you're room when you go for breakfast, they can enjoy the grounds but what's the justification on 25£ per day.
The only positives that I can mention was the stunning location, Gardens, views, the upkeep of the buildings on the outside. The free dog toy and treats for our dog. Coffee and tea station with kettle.

We offered a selection of items on our continental breakfast to suit all tastes and diets, I’m sorry to hear that you didn’t enjoy this. Our hotel is under refurbishment and the carpet in our restaurant has been recently replaced. I don’t understand what you mean about the bed joined together as it is a double bed, so unfortunately I am unable to comment on this. The heating comes on throughout the day and the thermostat on the radiator can be controlled on varying heat between 1-5, the heated towel rail in the bathroom is even on or off. The £25 dog charge as advertised is for your dog to stay with us, upkeep of our dog beds and toys and the treats and toys given to your dog, alongside enhanced cleaning of the dog rooms. The dog is welcome everywhere with the exception of our restaurant. All of our front of house team advise on arrival that you can dine with your dog in our bar, or our team are more than happy to look after your dog whilst you have breakfast. I am pleased to hear you enjoyed our gardens, our Head Gardener works hard with the upkeep and will be delighted with your kind words. Thank you for sharing your feedback with us.

I have had numerous emails since our last stay in 2019 and responded to a special offer email at £129 night B&B. I am not going to list the numerous failings around the quality of food, long waits for service, food quality and quantity. I was going to write a comprehensive list here but decided not to due to the response of the lovely "mother hen" on reception when we checked out. I think she had already received a good battering from other guests and immediately apologized to myself and fellow gust as we started to outline examples of our experience. We both stated that the staff were absolutely polite and charming but clearly untrained and out of there depth. We found out they were new as the hotel had lost their old staff during the Covid lock down. Top marks to Shelley who did her best to help us.
Nothing wrong with the staff other than a lack of training. The failure to train the staff is a dismal failure of the management of the hotel. It was telling that having decided not to eat at the hotel after the first nights we booked in for diner and breakfast at another local hotel. In conversation with the manager we explained why we were eating there. He said they had suffered with the same problem of loss of staff and he was sympathetic to Guyers House. However the dining experience was completely different. Very young staff but excellent service. I asked 3 of the staff serving us if they were new and complemented them on how well they were serving us. One young lady came back with a very telling comment " they have trained us well here"
The grounds were stunning and the outside of the buildings looked like a country house hotel should look. The inside decoration was somewhat tired.
We understand that the hotel was changing hands at the end of the month. I known very little about hotel management other than as a consumer. I would as a business owner respectfully advise the new owners to push the pause button on bookings as the collateral damage to the reputation of the hotel could be long lasting. Nothing wrong with the hotel staff they just need training so could I suggest the new owners get a trainer in and start from the basic greeting of guests and build them up in how to deliver an excellent service.
I said to the "mother hen" we want to come back at a later date and enjoy our stay.

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience with us, I’m sorry to hear that your stay wasn’t to our usual high standard. We are, like many other hospitality businesses facing the difficulty in recruitment and very fortunate to have such a willing team who are all trying their best. We are working through a training programme to polish off their skills and provide guidance where needed. Shelley is an asset to our team and I will ensure she sees your kind words. We do hope to welcome you back to Guyers House in the future.

The hotel and grounds are beautiful but our room was not. The bathroom ceiling had mould on and the extractor fan was not working , hence damp and mould in the room, This is clearly a health and safety issue and needs to be sorted. There were water marks on the walls, the carpet was stained in several places. This room seriously needs some work done on it. I was told when I booked our show dog in that there was a £25 a night charge just to have my dog in the room as the room had to have a deep clean. Well there was no way that room was deep cleaned. Also they supplied a dog bed and bowl. Well the dog bed was so small, my dog could just about get his bottom into in and the small plastic dog bowl was not suitable as anyone who owns a dog knows that plastic bowls are not good for dogs to eat and drink out of. It’s such a shame because the hotel is in a lovely setting and is quiet and peaceful. Also a cooked breakfast is not available until 8am and a lot of show dog people stay in this hotel as it’s not that far from the show ground and need to be at the show around 7.30 in the morning if they are first in so would need an earlier breakfast. I would not consider staying here again until these issues are resolved.

Thank you for sharing your feedback, in particular that you liked the grounds. Had you raised your concerns at the time, our team would have been more than happy to rectify these for you. I am sorry that the dog bed was too small for your dog, we do have them in a variety of sizes so would have been more than happy to have provided a bigger bed. Had you asked in advance, we would have happily accommodated a continental breakfast at an earlier time for you.

This would have been one star but service did improve the second evening.
We had two nights booked in this establishment. The hotel was ok albeit a little tired but the first evening the service was appalling over an hour wait for food, which we could not enjoy after this wait.
After the dinner we spoke to the manager who’s only comments were a list of excuses blaming everything but the hotel. Staff pinging and COVID restrictions were the most prevalent of her excuses. We may have accepted some of this if the COVID restrictions were consistent but at breakfast it was buffet service so numerous guests were handling the same utensils and messing with the food.
The second evening was much better where we had much more attentive and speedier service.
On collecting the bill we had to negotiate some discount for the first night despite the manager advising us that she would look at the bill and make adjustments, probably knowing she wouldn’t be on duty when we left.

This hotel has a lovely location, far enough from the main road to be quiet, with plenty of parking, interesting garden to walk around and can pick fruit from the orchard. The breakfast buffet was good, with the option to add a freshly cooked breakfast. All very tasty. The room was cleaned each day and the teas and coffee sachets refilled. The room was a good size, with plenty of space to hang clothes and store luggage.

My mother booked afternoon tea for my birthday. When we arrived there was sign to wear masks inside the hotel, but not a single member of staff was wearing a mask? Very luke warm welcome from two ladies busy looking at the computer at reception. We were offered to sit inside or out and we chose outside as the gardens are very attractive. Within a a couple of minutes a pot of tea arrived, with dirty cups and spoon, two plates a two knives. At no point we’re we asked what tea we would like or if we wanted a different drink. Dirty cups were replaced with clean then we were left for 15 mins. Then 4 little jars of jam arrived one of which had already been opened and jam taken out of it and clotted cream in a dirty dish. Another 10 minute wait and a very very sorry excuse for a cream tea arrived no serviettes, so we had to ask. Sandwiches made with very cheap white bread, scones not edible and no sign of dainty cakes, but a little square of bought cheese cake, some sort of crumble in a shot glass and a square of rocky road. After eating the finger sandwiches and one scone we left the rest. At no point did anyone come to ask if everything was OK nor was any more tea offered. When my mother complained she was offered a voucher!!!! Why on earth having had such a bad experience would you want to come back for more. I appreciate there may have difficulties due to COVID and potentially staff isolating, but at no time did anyone state this to us to set our expectations. If you can’t deliver a basic cream tea you should not offer it. Shameful shameful shameful and to charge £43 for 2 cups of tea a sandwich and scone…………… what a rip off!!!

This hotel was exactly what we were looking for in a quick weekend away.
The rooms are not modern or lavish, and that is part of the charm of the place. You just feel like you're in a hotel that has a history and character rather than a 'one size fits all' corporate hotel.
The staff are really lovely and were helpful and welcoming.
Breakfast was just right - enough to have a good breakfast without seeming overly lavish and wasteful. The cooked breakfast was fresh and made to order and was not greasy.
We would return and would recommend is you're looking for a quiet hotel in a nice area with a bit of character.

Because the management can’t deal with criticism of any kind. Our stay earlier this year was the worst we have ever had in a hotel. Despite a face to face meeting email and written correspondence none of the issues I raised were addressed. We were charged full price despite cutting short our stay due to ‘illness’ including for food we never got the opportunity (thankfully!) to eat. I am amazed this once lovely hotel is even still open.
It does seem strange as we had a terrible experience along with many others it seems.
