Stayed one night in double bed room with disability facilities that appeared well thought out.
Bed very comfy.
Lots of tea & coffee and kettle with both free still & sparkling water.
Room was very spacious.
Bathroom well equipped and not an issue.
Located above the bar very quiet and safe.
You have to pay for cooked breakfast £3.85 plus £1.50 for tea, coffee that were refillable.
Good location

We stayed in this spoons last year and came back again this year. The pub itself is quite lively (we turned up on a Saturday night). Which always puts me off but once you're in your room you wouldn't know you were in a pub. The rooms are spacious, quiet and all unique. The beds are comfortable. I like that you get free water and biscuits (these days you don't get much in hotels) along with tea and coffee. The staff are so friendly and helpful. Everyone from the door security to the check in staff made us feel so welcome. That's probably what sold it for me as the restaurant itself wasn't as pleasant eating late on a Saturday night (just due to how busy and loud it was). Just my personal preference. Sunday night was a totally different story, quiet in both senses.

We'd happily come back again. If anything what I like the most is you're made to feel a bit more special and welcome as a hotel guest which is always nice. Out of all the spoons we've stayed in Chesterfield seems to do this the best.

Car parking is a bit of a pain as you have to book early to get a slot in the car park but there is other parking a short walk away and if you're checking in late you can easily stop in front of the hotel to unload and then move the car which is handy as there's a lot of steps to get to your room.

The Portland Hotel is part of the Wetherspoons pub chain. Please don’t knock until stayed in them. This hotel was above the pub and situated in the centre of Chesterfield. Lovely hotel with plenty of bedrooms and private & secure from the pub. There is hotel parking for approx 8 cars which are just for hotel residents and not the pub customers. To access the hotel there is a private entrance away from the pub or you can access through the pub via a secure card entry system. The bedrooms are modern with a large television on the wall, double bed, armchair seat, desk and kettle facilities with free tea, coffee, hot chocolate and water bottles. There is an iron & ironing board in the cupboard. The bathroom is very modern with a walk in shower and fountain powerful shower. No bath in my room. Very quiet in the evenings even with the pub busy downstairs inside & outside as the windows are double glazed and pained. Could not hear anything outside. Normal Wetherspoon facilities also like the bar with access to drinks & food. Breakfast is from 7am. Outside seating for everyone. Definitely would visit again as was apprehensive with it being a Wetherspoons, but now will consider this chain seriously for stays away. Apparently around 50-60 hotels in the UK.

As the title says, this was the very first experience we have had in staying at a Wetherspoons Hotel. So we arrived with an open mind. The first thing was the pre-booked parking for £3.50 was available on arrival. Hotel reception was welcoming and the room was spacious, clean with a huge King size double bed. We were in the room on the top floor that is above 'The' of The Portland, next to the red chimney stack.

Wetherspoons operate a rather bizarre policy in that you can not book a table in the restaurant, even though you are a paying guest and effectively are living there on the premises.

At dinner time, @1800 hours as current regulations mean restaurants and pubs shut at 2200 hours, we followed instructions and entered the bar, only to be immediately ordered outside into the street to queue whilst it was raining.

I tried to reason with the doorman, but he was only 'following orders' and we know where that got us all some 80 years ago!

I tried explaining that we were residents, gave our room number and even restated the instructions we were given. He would not have any of it and we were forced to queue outside for entry, in the pouring rain behind revellers who were out on the town on a Saturday night having a good time. I even offered him an alternative that we could just sit inside to keep dry and wait until it was our time to be seated in the restaurant. To make paying guests wait outside in the rain with other non-paying guests is unacceptable.

The same rigmarole was played out again on Sunday morning at breakfast, fortunately this time it was not raining.

Both meals and service once seated were standard good old Wetherspoons fayre and we have no complaints.

On checking out, I took the opportunity to discuss the previous evening's situation with the receptionist who I recognised as the guy on the door from Saturday. His explanation was that due to COVID the restaurant and bar was operating on a reduced capacity of about 150 instead of the normal 600 at peak times. This however, only served to make my point more relevant in so much as with reduced capacity it was even more imperative that Wetherspoons should offer paying guests the opportunity to book tables at their selected time.

This is poor, very poor Wetherspoons and needs to be taken up with Whitbread's Head Office in Luton.

You cannot expect paying guests to stand outside in the rain, without coats (as we were staying on the premises we did not have them), to seniors in their 60's and queue behind those out to have a good time. I expect this policy to be reviewed and the unyielding individual to be given training in Customer Satisfaction (CSAT) and Customer Experience (CX) in industry parlance because we certainly did not receive any.

We only called in for a drink after having eaten elsewhere. We sat in the beer garden, and although the table had dried drink on it when we sat down this was cleaned as soon as we asked. As usual drinks are ordered on the app, an excellent concept. A bottle of wine, a good friend (my wife) and a warm evening made it even more enjoyable

Reception staff were friendly and welcoming. We had not realised we needed to book parking, we were however easily able to park to unload our cases and staff were able to tell us the best value and safest parking in the area. This was a ten minute walk from the hotel through the town centre. The hotel is in the town centre, Our room was very quiet despite being over the pub on a hot summers evening. The room was spacious and had contemporary décor. Very well equipped for our stay. Lots of nice local cafes for breakfast. Highly recommend No 10 tea room and The Spread Eagle Pub for great breakfasts.

So Tuesday morning went in ordered a breakfast then a side of sausage bacon and toast. When it came the breakfasts came on 1 plate. When I challenged this I was informed as I ordered it at the same time it was assumed I'd only require 1 plate.

Do you seriously expect me to order 1 cupper tea and a breakfast, go and sit down then go back to bar to order another cupper then Sausage, Bacon and Toast to avoid confusing the person behind the bar.

I've never in all my life been served 2 breakfasts on 1 plate before and when I challenged this, we was asked to leave and barred for life, telling us we aren't welcome ever again.

I'll happily bring my own plates for you next time if it's easier for you manage.

Pathetic, if you want a propper decent breakfast get yourself to the Butlington a lovely pub Excellent breakfast and staff that can comprehend and understand 2 people ordering 2 breakfasts requires 2 plates.

I'm surprised they didn't give us out Tea's in a cup between us.

Not Happy!

Absolutely disgusting place. The service is so slow (took 40min to get served a pint at 7pm on a Thursday when it wasn’t even busy)
Ordered food but came out after 55min and was cold.
Ordered a steak and it was burnt to a crisp even though I ordered a medium-rare

This is the 3rd meal I’ve complained about in 5 weeks so I will not be ordering again or even visiting again.

When I said to the waiter the food was poor, he said “you’ve paid for a cheap meal so expect a cheap meal”

The meal was good, they can't get fish and chips wrong, jacket potatoe with roasted vegetables exactly as ordered. The problem was being over charged. One till open with only one person serving and early evening drinkers wanted to be served. When I visit Chesterfield again I will not be eating at Weatherspoons Portland Hotel.

Booked a double with walk in shower ( as mobility issues)
But when we were shown to the room it was a twin. I showed the conformation of a double but was told they had been advised of a twin booking.I expected a king size bed as before, but was told no king size only double beds now.
The staff member then offered to clip the two singles together and re make up the bed. The walk in shower is very slippery, a non slip mat was provided, but when you place this under the shower head the soap/ shower gel dispenser is behind you !!!.
The hotel is showing signs of wear since we last visited in 2015. The overall cleaning needs to be improved as very dusty. (Public areas Reception Floor & lobby to car park).

in Room.:-

bathroom floors , inside wardrobe , table and lamp bases around TV.
The staff do their best but appear to be stretched at times having to see to hotel guests and run the bar. Service and food was good but Lots of uncleared tables at Saturday Breakfast

Hi To be honest as for a larger family rooms next to each other as a special request as they normally honor for you anyway. Family rooms are bigger and we stayed 2nd floor - we also were 2 couples celebrating birthdays :) Have a great time!
