Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

We stayed here with friends. From the moment we arrived the staff were friendly and helpful. Our rooms were on the top floors and as there isn't a lift the girl on the bar took the heaviest case up for us. She offered to take the rest too. The cleaner had just returned from her holiday and our rooms were cleaned and everything was replenished. If we needed anything the staff were happy to help. Breakfast is of high quality and there is a good choice. We ate in the restaurant, again, a good standard. One of our party has food allergies, these were catered for with the meals being adapted.

The breakfast was very good with plenty of choice from a menu. All the staff we came across were very friendly and pleasant. They also did evening meals which were above average with a good selection. They did a happy hour at the bar which finished at 6.30. However, it was unclear what the prices were and how much you were saving? The room was ok but a bit below standard as the last makeover (probably in the 90's) and had not been touched since. The was flaky paint and the carpets had not been vacuumed. The bathroom was clean. There was plenty of free tea and coffee in the room. We did not ask to use the carpark but used the back of Sainsburys a short distance away which worked out cheaper as we were out and about for most of the day and you only paid till 6 pm. The bedrooms could do with a coat of paint and the manager needs to improve the cleaning.

Stayed the Royal Oak for two nights. We had a room four flights of stairs up.The bedroom was a small double but fell over bed as you went into the bedroom,Notice in bathroom to say please do not use the bath as waiting for a new one to be fitted.Tried to use the shower but when i tried to turn it on the controls were so difficult to turn on. When i did get the shower to work with help from my husband it trickled water out and started to make an awful noise so we decided not to bother. Not good when you want to shower but cant.Staff were lovely and friendly and the restaurant was lovely good food good wine.Ate there many times and food and service.Shame our stay was marred with a few issues.

What a lovely little gem. Quirky converted building which you can tell due to the different shapes and sizes of rooms, travelled with other couple and we did get the better of the 2 rooms. Both rooms were clean, quirky and had all utilities needed for a overnight stay. Our room was room 1 up a few flights of stairs but worth it, large room, bathroom was lush, bed was gorgeous and very comfortable, at front of building with view of hills over the buildings in front. Staff were very friendly and polite. Lovely young lady checked us in and escorted us to our rooms, she was also on duty next morning, all bright and bubbly serving us our fabulous cooked brekkie, all special request granted, young lady also checked us out. Will definitely be returning

Just left this morning after a 1 night stay. We were I Room 5 on the 2nd floor, the room was lovely and the bed was a King Size with amazing white bedding. So comfortable. Shower was very good. We had a few drinks in the bar and there were specials on, I can vouch for the Large house Red wine 🍷 Breakfast this morning was So Good, I’m still so full! Above and beyond were the staff, they work so hard to make sure your stay is good and they were exemplary. The owners should be very proud. Well done and we can’t wait to visit again x

We were welcomed in the bar and after climbing 2 flights of stairs, shown to our room. It was tiny, you had to squeeze around the bed. There was a mirror placed against the wall in the corner, probably to hide the stains. Another mirror on the wall and a shelf.Mismatched child size wardrobe. Stained carpets and walls. Dirty windows, sills and woodwork all thick with dust. Wall lamps thick with dust. Then I went to the bathroom.. . The bin was still full from previous guest with wet towels hanging on the back of the door. Bathroom had not been cleaned. It was dirty. Mould in the shower, cracked sink and dirty glass shelf.Described as a room with a view. It looked onto the beer garden and industrial looking buildings one of which had burned down. You couldn't sit to do your hair or makeup as the mirror was too high and no seat anyway. We decided to leave. The carpets needed hoovering and under the bed was disgusting with thick dust. On telling the young female staff member, she wasn't interested as it was booked through booking.com. She told me that she had checked the room herself!! She apologised and asked for the key back. There was nothing else available in Ripon so we went home. Our weekend was completely ruined. We collected our car from the piece of wasteland at the rear of the pub which we had been charged £5.00 to park on. Very disappointing and not what we expected. Disgusting standard of cleanliness. Will never return.

Response from Kat Rand, General Manager at The Royal Oak Hotel
Responded 5 Jun 2023
Hi. Thank you for leaving your feedback. I apologise about your recent visit. The room is described as a 'small double' as it is a small double room. We do have different sized rooms as described on our website and booking.com. The wardrobe is not child sized, a large wardrobe would be overbearing for the room, so we have placed a small wardrobe in there with draws for storage. Also the bin was not full. However there was a towel left on a hook on the back of the bathroom door that the housekeeper did miss, which I do apologise for. There is a building next door which is in the process of being taken down and flats rebuilt, unfortunately things like this are out of my control. Also the 'piece of wasteland' car park is a private car park that we rent which has a barrier and a code for entrance, with 8 spaces and 8 private garages, grassland and a nice big flower bed, not exactly a wasteland. I apologise again about the towel that was left hung up on the back of the door, the housekeepers have been spoken to and the mistake will not be made again. And I apologise about the small crack in the sink.

We booked a superior double room here for our visit to Ripon. Our room was lovely with everything we needed, and the bed although quite low was comfortable. I wish we had been warned about having to go up 3 flights of stairs though and no lift, but we managed, despite been very breathless as we reached the top as we are in our mid 70’s. Our complaint was the bathroom, it looked beautiful , but then we began to notice things were not right as we progressed through our stay. Firstly the toilet hadn’t been cleaned from the last guest, not a pleasant sight… on washing our hands there was no plug and the water was only just warm, not great when you would like to take a shower and it’s not an electric shower, luckily we had one at home before we left thank goodness. After returning to the hotel at 1am in the morning more problems, ran out of toilet roll and no spare, thank goodness I had taken a box of tissues. Then to top it all bathroom fan didn’t automatically go off with light and had to switch off at isolator switch despite waiting 10/15 mins I mentioned all our complaints next morning to the lady who we paid our bill to, unfortunately she wasn’t interested, no apology or thanks for making her aware, customer service at its worst……

Response from Kat Rand, General Manager at The Royal Oak Hotel
Responded 11 May 2023
Hi. Thank you for the review. Although this is a 4 star review it is rather frustrating. Firstly the building is 16th century, and is listed so unfortunately a lift isn't a possibility. Secondly we were incredibly apologetic for the issues with the toilet, and they were rectified immediately, however this issue was the only one that was brought to our attention on check-out. The manager on breakfast apologised again for the toilet issue, but this was all you mentioned. The other issues you have risen in this review is the first time we have heard! Customer care is not at it's worse at all, if you had actually mentioned the other issues rather than waiting to get home to write this review, we would have happily amended anything necessary. Customer service is the number 1 priority! But if we are not aware of issues there and then, how can we help you?
