The Lady Elizabeth Bar & Hotel (formally The Black Boy) is situated in the heart of Sudbury overlooking the market square with easy access to the surrounding countryside. Market Hill, the heart of our town, it owes its existence to a 14th century woman of nearby Clare. She was a widow, kin to royalty and ‘lord’ of Sudbury. In Lady Elizabeth de Burgh’s time, Anglo-Saxon Sudbury was an interweaving web of narrow streets, until she invested in an ambitious extension to the east that is now Sudbury’s main trading centre. The open space in front of the church was used by the market stalls. The timber frames within modern shop fronts, and some surviving long, narrow plots are remnants of this 14th century layout which we can still see today. With it's seven en-suite letting rooms it is the perfect place for either a weekend retreat or a relaxing mid week stay; dog friendly rooms are available with prior arrangement. Now serving a full menu and breakfasts. Food serving times are everyday 7am for breakfasts till 12 then till 9pm for main menu. Serving the finest in traditional ales, handpicked wine menu and spirit range. Come and stay and let the new friendly team look after you!

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We arrived early evening for a surprise birthday party for our daughterBooking in with Carl was painless. The room was clean and tidy, not directly over the Market Place, and had a huge bath which was put to good work after a long trip. We were warned that the market would be setting up in the morning. The noise wasn’t bad and didn’t last very long until the stalls were set up. The stay included a basic continental style breakfast, but Carl was able to arrange a full cooked breakfast for us on our second morning, which was ample and really set us up. The staff couldn’t be friendlier or more helpful, which made our stay very pleasant. They apologised for the noise in the bar, which, to be honest, was actually minimal. (We had travelled from Scarborough and are used to Northern pubs :) Thanks to all whom we met- Carl, Claudia and Co. You made our stay really pleasant. Julie and Dave

We stayed here for 5 nights in June 2023. There was a fan in the room, primarily because the window could not be opened at night time due to the high level of noise. Even with the window closed, it was disruptive. The frequent car sounds echo up the building. The bed was comfortable, but that was about where the positive ended. The room was dirty, the bathroom hadnt been cleaned from what I could see. It's the first time we've stayed away and I've gone out to buy cleaning liquids to clean the bathroom and surfaces in the bedroom. The drinks in the evening were from unclean/unpolished glasses and we opted to eat elsewhere.

We had a recent family event at the pub, the service and food provided was really great. Could not recommend more - very easy communication with the manager, and they managed to accommodate all our needs for the day at short notice. The space was perfect for the occasion, we had the back part of the pub which felt more intimate for everyone. Thanks Bex & the team + The homemade sausage rolls went down extremely well! Thanks again!

Turned up on Christmas Eve booked to stay until 27th Dec all locked up no one to be found checked my emails yes had booking confirmation on 19th December 2023. Locals told me it had been shut for a while they thought for public health reasons. The worse part of this sorry tale is neither the hotel or booking.com have been in touch to apologise or explain. I am 72 with health problems and suffered considerable distress due to this treatment. I would advise everyone to avoid using both this hotel and booking.com.

We were disappointed. The room was tiny and the bathroom had not been cleaned and had a pool of water in the corner. We had to ask for towels, cups and milk. The owner gave us cups, left towels in the corridor later and said we would have to go to the shop if we wanted milk. The pub was closed and we were the only ones who ordered breakfast. The cooked breakfast was beautifully cooked but there was no juice, fruit or cereals. There was not much toilet roll so we texted to ask for more and the owner left two more towels in the corridor so we had to buy toilet paper. We could not find anyone to say Goodbye to on leaving so phoned the owner and they said to leave the keys in the bedroom door.
