Calheta Beach hotel garners appreciation for its attentive service and vibrant atmosphere, though it seems to fall short for the more youthful guests and shows signs of wear. While the amenities, including diverse food choices and entertainment, receive positive remarks, some areas reportedly need enhancement. Rooms are considered clean and cozy, but cries for modernization are evident. Opinions on value are split, with some guests questioning the food quality and the cost of upgrades. Its location is celebrated for scenic beach proximity, notwithstanding a few comments about limited nightlife.

We stayed here in December for 11 nights in a mountain facing room which was relatively small compared to other rooms but was ok and felt a little dark. It was comfortable and functional. the hotel was kept clean as reviewed by others by the hard working friendly staff. The restaurant staff were friendly too despite being hard working running around doing stuff. The hotel was in a location convenient for a beach and 40 mins drive from the airport which was a nice and easy drive (we hired a car). There is a supermarket just across the road and the food was nice and varied within a week but repeats itself every week. The entertainment was ok and the indoor pool was warm enough to use with a little one. The steam room and jacuzzi were nice and switched on demand if required before 4pm. Christmas day was fully booked and very busy but it was not bad. The only criticism I would say is the lack of any free parking spaces for the hotel. I believe the building across the road belongs to the hotel but they don't offer any parking for free for guests which is a disappointment for a big hotel. There is paid on street parking but for EUR 8 a day for over 12 days it was starting to add up. so we took the advice of the receptionist to go park the car for free overnight on days and nights we were not going to use the car about 10 mins walk away in the calheta village area opposite the church. it would have been nicer to have some slots free for the hotel but it is not a big issue. Overall this is a great hotel and I would consider returning and highly recommend it to visitors to Madeira. Always hire a car, there are so many nice places to go see just a pleasant drive away.

Holidayed with a male friend so booked a twin room. Was upset to find that a double had been made up. Desk said would sort it but later said there was no twin room available. I was adamant that I wouldn't have it and amazingly they found a twin..
The staff after this awkward start things improved.
They sent a fruit platter as a sorry and on my friends birthday, left a bottle of champagne in the room for us.
The food choices at meals was excellent.. Buffet style.. and the chef was very helpful and happy to cook Spanish omelettes for us the one evening when there was little vegetarian choice.
The only thing it fell down on was the coffee. It came in various ways from the coffee machine but tasted terrible.. A Weird after taste.. Even with the hot chocolate. Their tea bags were OK but again their water again gave an after taste. Coffee at the local cafes was lovely and only a euro.
You could eat twice in the week at the a la carte restaurant where we had a lovely meal for my friends birthday and they made a birthday dessert that they brought out singing happy birthday to him.
The building was very clean and classic styled with marble floors. The bars were well stocked and the staff were very friendly. There was a limited choice of zero sugar drinks.
Each night there was someone singing or dance displays.
Bar closed at 11pm.
The lights on the balcony annoyingly go out at midnight.
The beach is very close and has big stones. The water gets deep quickly sobe careful with small ones. The loungers there are state owned and even in January someone came collecting the fees..
The pool is small if you want to swim and would have been crammed in good weather and the indoor one is very small.. My friend was doing about 3 strokes end to end. The jacuzzi is part of the pool and the control wasn't working so it was a bit disappointing.
The nearby marina and esplanade were very flat and well maintained, making the afternoon stroll very pleasant.
I would go here again.

Stayed for 4 nights on an all inclusive basis in a mountain view suite. Overall the hotel was pretty good - nice quiet location, not too busy. The food selection wasn’t as extensive as some larger hotels we have stayed in but the quality was good and you could always find something. Breakfast was particularly good with eggs, bacon etc and the desserts were also really tasty. The pool is nice and there is a raised deck sunbathing area with great views of the beach and marina. The room was located over the road and was large and modern with a balcony area. I tried to upgrade to a sea view room direct with the hotel after booking (through Loveholidays) but customer services wasn’t very responsive and the rate quoted was almost double the cost of my holiday. In the end i stuck with the mountain view room which was the right decision as we spent little time in the room, and the room we has was perfecty adequate. The hotel is taking a sensible approach re. Covid - you have to quarantine in your room on arrival if you are waiting on test results from the airport but i understand from other guests that they come through within 12 hours or so. Face masks need to be worn in the hotel and also restaurant other than if sitting at the table. Around the pool its a bit more relaxed and we only wore a mask when getting a drink from the bar. There is not
much to do outside of the hotel, but location ok for a quiet break. Overall this hotel was good value for money.

This was our first and last trip to Madeira and the Calheta Beach Hotel. The hotel is situated by a small man made beach, which gets noisy and crowded everyday, especially with summer school children clubs. Calheta is a small village with very few shops and a nice marina.

The rooms in the hotel are adequate and clean, but lacked tea and coffee making facilities. We enjoy a coffee in the evening sitting on the balcony. Storage is also on the sparse side. Should you wish to change your beach towels you will be charged 1.50 euro each time. You do have the option of paying an extra 40euro per person per week to change your towels daily (if necessary), toiletries in your room, a key to the safe and a sleeve to put on a sunbed to reserve it as a Premium Guest. We found that some guests removed these and used the bed. Neither the pool boy or Management did anything about this. We were never informed about these hidden extras, which was very annoying and added to the cost of the holiday.

The food well that is another matter, there was hardly any choice and it was not always hot. We often filled up with cheese and biscuits. Breakfast was the best meal. Many guests including us ate out at the local restaurants. The a la carte restaurant had a very limited menu for All Inclusive guests. Drinks are hit and miss, queueing for the only open bar was a bit annoying. There were no sugar free drinks ( apart from diet coke from a pump but you couldn't be sure what you were getting). We went across to the local supermarket to buy cans of sugar free coke etc.

The staff in general were very pleasant and helpful. The reception team helped us when we couldn’t book our covid tests online and telephoned the clinic, made the appointment and booked the taxi.

Taxis are very expensive on the island, but the hotel run a shuttle bus to Funchal which is much cheaper.

There is no rep. service at the hotel and I spent several days trying to get through to Jet2, when they changed our flight home. I needed to check what time they were picking us up from the hotel.

Funchal airport is a small efficiently run airport. Unfortunately we had to queue for an hour, due to two Jet2 flights going out and the endless checking of paperwork.

This hotel is definitely not a 4 star hotel more a 2 star.

We have just returned from a last minute booking to Calheta Beach. As everyone else has commented, despite there being many flights coming in on the same day, the covid testing at the airport was incredibly quick and efficient. We were out of the airport in 40 minutes off a full flight. On arrival at the hotel (45 minute drive away) we were given our key card and information on how to order room service as we had to isolate until of test results came through. The key card didn't work but this was sorted after the 3rd try! The Seaview room was lovely and the balcony view was very good. The meals from room service were the best we had all week.Huge meals. Our Covid results came through in the early hours of the morning so we had an afternoon and evening in our room but joined in the music quiz (remotely) from our balcony.
I think that we were unlucky with our room (307), the pillows smelt really dreadful and had to be changed, the fridge didn't work and was changed for another but not until 3 days into our stay, the electricity failed in our room one night and this took an hour to fix and finally despite us constantly telling the reception staff, the air conditioning didn't work in our room all week!!! However the hotel itself is lovely, the weather was superb and the evening entertainment was good. The pool is not heated so it is a bit chilly at first!
I think that the hotel reception could do with being pro- active rather than reactive. There was no mention as to where the restaurant was or where we could get snacks, no mention as to where the lists were kept for the transfer into Funchal, no information as to how to book the a la carte restaurant etc..., we had to find this out for ourselves or from other guests. We booked the Onda Azul restaurant for 2 nights but really wished we hadn't. The food was not good in fact the spaghetti bolognese I had on the 2nd night was inedible but I didn't want to make a fuss and just left it. We would have been better eating at the buffet restaurant where the food is plentiful and good. The cocktails are nothing like you expect them to be, Pina Colada tastes like butterscotch and the daiquiri lemon like jif would taste, everyone had their own take of what they tasted like but we all agreed that they did not taste as they should!. The rose wine however is good. On the plus side, the bed is amazing, huge and very comfortable, the staff in the restaurant are very helpful and do well in maintaining social distancing and the situation of the hotel is lovely with a very pleasant promenade along the Marina. The transfer bus to Funchal was very good and well worth the 20 Euros and swimming in the sea with the huge cliffs looming above you is quite magical. All in all we had a nice week away, Madeira is beautiful .

Stayed in a sea view room - worth paying the extra at the moment when the first 8 hours were in the room with good room service for meal and drinks.
Staff were friendly and efficient and everything was kept safe with masks and only staff serving from the buffet in the restaurant.
We were able to book deals in the a la carte restaurant adjacent for the hotel but you need to book early to get a table. Worth it for a change from the buffet.
Hotel location is great for the beach but to see the island you need to use taxis (from outside the hotel) or hire a car. We used tropical car rental just down the road and they seemed fine.
Recommend for an all inclusive holiday with good food, clean spacious rooms and excellent service

Beautiful location, 40 mins from airport and 20 mins from Funchal. The hotel could book a daily transfer to Funchal for 20eu per person return trip. This is a stunning hotel, we especially loved the outdoor area, the relaxed atmosphere and the personal friendly service of the lovely staff. (they should not have to tolerate unacceptable and rude behavior from the French and German guests especially in the bar and restaurant)
More sunbeds and seating with fixed cushions in the outdoor bar area would be helpful as would designated smoking areas (we experienced some European guests heavy smoking and was difficult to avoid some evenings) We did not use the public beach it was very busy.
The palm trees around the pool area and the quality of the pool would rival any tropical destination. The three children loved the kids club the staff were amazing accommodating and entertaining them for long sessions every day (2 children with special needs) This made a big difference to our holiday as we adults could then relax.
The private jeep safari we booked with Green Devil was fabulous the island has stunning locations to visit, the mountains are accessible by road to nearly 6000ft and at the top of the third highest mountain Pico de Arieiro we were above the clouds the day we went - Nuns Valley was also breathtaking and of course we could not miss seeing the glass balcony on the worlds 2nd highest sea cliff at Cabo Girão 580m (1902ft) The rooms were great we had booked sea view suites and could not praise the hotel enough for the cleanliness and courteous service. The food was good lots of choice and themed evenings in the buffet restaurant were really enjoyable. The separate a la carte restaurant had a chilled relaxing alfresco atmosphere and we loved dining there (twice on our visit allowed) Food was delicious. The quiet roof top terrace was amazing for watching the beautiful sunsets we felt this was a secret escape not many guests knew about and could be made to be more of a feature especially if there was a drinks facility installed. The pool towels are really handy they are left in your room and a small charge to exchange them if needed was fair. A courtesy changing room would be useful if you have a late return flight as the hotel allows you to continue to use all the facilities after checking out of your room at midday - we really appreciated this with a large family. This hotel is highly recommended we look forward to planning our return in the near future.

We were lucky enough to secure a room overlooking the pool/beach giving a wonderful view of the sea.
We spent 11 nights at this hotel.
Food : Buffet style. Hand wash available throughout and you had your own tongs to prevent infection. A good selection of varied meats, fish and vegetables available. Potatoes were varied into different forms each evening. The choices repeated after a week but we were happy as there was so much to choose from.
The doors to the restaurant are locked promptly at 9pm. Really think the hotel could benefit from extending dinner to 9.30pm to make the most of being able to enjoy the sunset.
We dined in the a la carte on 2 evenings. Delicious meal each time but you have to put pressure on them to book you in.
Accommodation: quite basic and a bit dated. Storage is an issue if you have 2 full suitcases. The rooms where serviced daily. A fridge is available for your complimentary water.
Drinks: A bit hit and miss. Some of the wine was lovely and really liked Coral the local beer. Some branded spirits available but the cocktails are premade and best avoided.
Entertainment: During the day the poolside music is upbeat. We joined in the Aqua Gym but other than that the entertainment crew weren’t bothering you. Come the evening mostly it was a crooning session. We actually joked that we couldn’t hear ‘an Englishman in New York’ anymore!!
Had a couple of shows but the lighting needs to improve so you can actually see the acts!
Staff: it shows that they are short staffed but a couple of people stood out Pablo and Antonio behind the bar.
Most people were courteous about respecting the COVID precautions. Staff encouraged masks in the indoor areas and at the bar.
We did a couple of excursions to experience Madeira and was not disappointed: Funchal - cable car, tropical gardens and the toboggan through the streets.
We also did the amazing west tour in a 4 x 4 swam in lava pools and ate the most delicious Prego!
All in all we had a lovely holiday and would recommend this hotel.

We have visited this hotel in August 2022. Stayed for 10 days and really regretted. Room 902 balcony couldn’t be used due to smell of the fish coming from nearby shop or restaurant. Food was really poor, yes lot of choir of same things..cooked on burned oil? Some pieces of meat were so hard to cut thet we couldn’t bother to eat…my last dinner was two pieces of cake as nothing else was possible to digest. Light next to bed was hanging on a wire…causing life risk issue. Bathroom door while opening were heard everywhere..I mean its a disaster not a hotel.
We had to eat outside as we couldn’t force ourselves or our kids as they refused t eat or even go there!
Now hotel is being advertised as a family hotel…yet people smoke everywhere. Pool beds are being claimed by people thet go somewhere for hours and staff says that they’re only cleaning in there! Kids beds are like prison beds…no king size beds for parent but two beds are moved together. Try to enjoy sleep!
Another thing we’ve faced is cockroaches under beds, around the pool…One of cockroaches was found in kids club and kids were told not to look at it and forget…some kids found worms in their drinks..staff told they’ll deal with it.

Every drink tasted different way as even same staff member done it different way…and served in plastic cut cups?

I can’t really recommend to anyone as you’ll regret it unless only thing you want to do is lie on a bed drink cheap drinks and eat poor…

We have just returned from here and we loved our visit.

We had a side view sea room which was based in the building opposite the main hotel and connected to the main building via a walkway on the third floor. The room was huge with a bedroom and separate lounge/kitchen area. The balcony was huge with a table and chairs. Housekeeping was excellent, the room was spotless when we moved in and was visited everyday. There were two small downsides, instead of a double, we had two single beds pushed together which was fine but a proper double would have removed the fear of being eaten by the bed in the middle of the night. Also, we seem to have received clean towels everyday even though there were multiple stickers in the bathroom advising of reusing the towels to help the environment.

Staff at reception were incredibly helpful any time we had any queries. I would recommend to book the treatments at the spa before you go as it can be quite difficult to get booked in for some treatments when you arrive. Also, any spa bookings need to be paid by cash at the time of the appointment rather than card or charging to the room. My partner had a massage and loved it.

The food and drink was plentiful and varied. The buffet changed every night so there was no repetition and there seemed to be no recycling of leftovers the next day at lunch. The staff in the restaurant and bars were always happy and helpful. One thing to note, not all bars are included in the all inclusive package. When we arrived, we went to the hotel bar near the beach for drinks and we were told that they don't take part in the all inclusive, it's the same with ordering snacks at the bar next to the pool. If you are on an all inclusive package, the pool bar gives you drinks and the snacks are laid out in the room where breakfast/lunch/dinner is and is quite limited. This is quite different from most other all inclusive holidays I've been on and it would be good if this was highlighted by staff on check in to prevent any confusion or awkwardness when trying to figure out what exactly is included.

The pool area was lovely and kept very clean. There were always staff around keeping it clean and making sure the area was well kept. there were plenty of sunloungers available, the ones on the raised terrace were much comfier than the ones poolside. There was also direct access from the pool area to the beach which was good. The entertainment team was fantastic, very friendly and there was a varied schedule of activities and games to enjoy along with plenty of evening entertainment.

We also took advantage of the shuttle bus to Funchal. The bus left the hotel promptly at 10am and left Funchal promptly at 6pm. The return time varies depending on the day and can easily be reserved at reception.

There isn't a huge amount of things to do in Calheta but this is the perfect place to relax and unwind and enjoy the sunshine.
