The Planters House is a spacious colonial plantation house located in the beautiful hills of the Uva Province. The hotel is surrounded by the tea plantation and majestic mountains, with a wonderful view over the south of the country. This idyllic setting provides an opportunity to completely relax as well as to explore the working tea estate and the spectacular natural surroundings. The estate was part of the Lipton estates and it is situated below the Lipton Seat. The design, which takes its inspiration from Sri Lanka's colonial past, is simple and stylish. There are five recently refurbished bedrooms, all of which have en-suite facilities. You can take a walk in our extensive garden, relax in the infinity pool or enjoy a game of badminton or croquet. We also offer a range of indoor games and guests are welcome to make use of our extensive DVD library. The pleasant climate is arguably one of the best in Sri Lanka. There are many beautiful walks in the area - from a leisurely stroll to a more energetic hike.

Detailed Reviews
Bit late writing this review but I really wanted to get across how beautiful this property is and how attentive the staff were. We actually had the place to ourselves when we were there and the staff could not do enough for us - whether it was offering us teas or food or recommending places to walk. The scenery is indescribable and the house itself is so historic. Bed was super comfy and the bathroom had a lovely bath where you could relax and gaze out the window. My only word of warning is that the journey from Haputale was a bit hair raising and not for the faint hearted - but we just tried to not think about the drops off the road and just look at the scenery!

I have to stress that the Planter's House is one of the most magical places I have ever stayed at - and I have traveled a lot in my life, especially in South Asia. The location is breathtakingly beautiful and the colonial era house is absolutely delightful, straight out of a James Ivory film. I cannot even begin to describe the class, charm and nostalgic atmosphere of this place! I also have to say that the staff are all extremely kind, polite and helpful. Nothing is trouble to them. The food is delicious and the crystal-clear pool is to die for! I also took a private tour in their jeep to Lipton's Seat which was marvellous! Overall, a paradise in the most gorgeous and emblematic Sri Lankan landscape, surrounded by magnificent trees, tea plantations and absolute peace. However there were some minor issues that need to be addressed: The house, while immensely charming, was somewhat unkept. The sofa coverings were worn and looked somewhat dirty. There was a heavy unpleasant smell coming from the kitchen. I had to ask the staff to keep the kitchen door closed because of this and because of loud and noisy chat in the kitchen. A long bookcase shelf in the library drawing room was broken and hanging in mid-air, as was the hat of the floor lamp. Overall, there was an air of neglect about the house. Minor things one might say, but nevertheless somewhat spoiling the perfect ambience of such a place. There were also tiny ants in our room, even on the bed. However the fantastic staff immediately changed all the sheets and even ironed the fresh ones, so the problem was solved. Last but not least, I have to express our gratitude to the manager and staff who managed to arrange a car in the evening without prior notice, in order to take us directly to Colombo Airport, since we had to urgently change our return flight and leave immediately due to flights cancelled and airports closed because of the coronavirus crisis. Luckily for us, all went well. I will fondly remember the Planter's House and wish to return some day.

Magical well renovated colonial house away from it all with wonderful views. It was spotlessly clean and well maintained. The staff were so very helpful and the food was first class. It really was like staying in someone’s lovely home with personal service. Beautiful walks can be done through local villages and even up to Lipton’s Seat. As it is so secluded, the roads to it are challenging so they will send a jeep to pick you up, which adds to the adventure and exclusivity.

Hotel located in the mountain, which can only be reached by 4x4 after 45 minutes of walking without asphalt, but they themselves provide the transfer service. The views are amazing throughout. In fact, the setting is a sight, with tea plantations surrounding the house. Deep pool with panoramic views a little hidden by the vegetation itself. The rooms and bathrooms are quite basic, although with the charm of rustic. Dinner was mediocre, you can choose only between two dishes of Sri Lankan cuisine and between two others of international cuisine. However, the breakfast is frankly fine. No buffet. It is a hotel where there is nothing to do, except the routes and activities that they organize, if at all, because we did not get informed in advance and, since we only spent one night there, we did not want to risk and previously organized visits to another tea plantation and waterfalls on our own. Communication with future guests fails.

We booked this property through Ceylon Haven, for 3 nights for a family get together. The staff lead by Malinda, was excellent, always obliging, serving with a smile and went the extra mile to make us comfortable.
The property is situated at the very top of a mountain and the views are breathtaking.
The drive to the top, from the turn off from the main road is treacherous. It’s only about 7-8km and it took us over 1hr to cover that distance. The road is just stones rock and soil. The hotel provides a Safari type jeep to get you to the top should your vehicle is unable to go in the road. Even if your vehicle could, I suggest not to as it damaged all the vehicles we went in, this was only because we were told by the person from the bungalow who came to meet us at the turn off, that our vehicles can go on this particular road.
The house was poorly maintained. The owner’s cottage and the garden suite were not cleaned properly. They smelt musty, had dust and had insects on the beds. My aunt had to get hold of the cleaning lady and supervise her to clean both these rooms! The rooms lack basic amenities a room and toilet should have. Heavy rain will flood the downstairs toilet.
Mobile Network is almost non existent at the top and their wifi works very very poorly, just to a few selected spots in the main bungalow.
The hike up to Lipton Seat was one of the highlights of our stay.
If the owner’s can maintain the bungalow, it is in fact a beautiful location with lovely staff.

This is the second time we return to The Planters House and we will be back for sure. An absolutely stunning location, Malinda and his excellent team (Yoga, Damith and all of the others!) went above and beyond every day. The food was spectacular, service at dinner was warm, authentic and friendly, the rooms were perfectly clean and very comfortable and we felt very at home. The staff make this place an exception, always aiming to help, but never smothering or over the top. We couldn’t recommend this place more and hope to return many times again.

Once you hop in the Jeep to the house and start your journey on the long windy road you get the sense you are In for something special. 50 minutes later you arrive at a gorgeous colonial property that is magnificently furnished and immaculately looked after. The rooms are gorgeous as well as the many common areas to relax. The infinity pool the most special I have been in with a remarkable mountain setting . With a trampoline for the kids we didn’t need to leave for 2 days. To top it off the food was delicious and near faultless. A truly unique and fulfilling experience.

We had high expectations of the place after seeing all the pictures and really hoped it was true after the long journey - we were not disappointed! Such a beautiful place, the building and rooms were well thought out and decorated, and the surroundings were amazing. We went on walks around the surrounding areas, including Lipton seat which was beautiful (and a long walk so be prepared!) Plus a chilled afternoon at the pool with some wine.
The staff were very helpful and always around, although not pestering which can be the case at many other places we visited. They were thoughtful enough to give us water for our onwards journey and little touches like that made us feel welcome and appreciated.
The food was great and they were able to adapt our orders based on preferences, for example one morning they made us egg hoppers which were super tasty. I would recommend anyone wanting Sri Lankan food to give it a try there as there was so much variety and tasted so good!
To top off the amazing few days we had, there was a knock on the door one morning with Malinda (the general manager) asking if we wanted to see the wild elephants. We then drove a few minutes and got to see one! Such a great experience - something completely different to seeing a wild elephant on your door step than a safari.

Planters house is absolutely amazing and the garden and swimming pool an absolute delight. The setting is grandiose and everything down to each and every detail is full of taste and refinement.
We have been fortunate to visit many places in the world and seldom have seen such a perfect place.
Planters house really has managed to create a unique experience for fortunate guests like us up in the tea country and we are really grateful for the few days we spent there.

Stayed here two nights with family and friends and loved it! The scenery is absolutely amazing, the bungalow is tastefully decorated with attention to detail, the rooms in the bungalow are gorgeous; we stayed in the cottage which was nice enough but could be a bit better decorated. Lovely garden at the back through. The bungalow is spacious and has lots of lounge areas with fireplaces etc. The service was fantastic - all the staff - Malinda and Amila and the whole team, were so helpful, welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. The food was yummy and always arrived quickly and without fuss. The garden is beautiful, with croquet and a massive trampoline, gorgeous pool (cold!) and loads of games in the house. We did the 13km round trip walk to the Lipton Seat which was amaaaaazing! The most incredible scenery. Highly recommend!
