My wife booked ourselves and our granddaughter in for an overnight stay before heading down to Blackpool for a short break. After doing some shopping at Gretna outlet we arrived at The Gables and were met with a lovely woman on reception who checked us in and was very pleasant and chatty. Room was nice, sure it could be doing with some TLC along with paint etc but bed was comfortable and bathroom was fine, although the seal of window needs repaired as there was a constant flow of cold air coming through it all day and night. We ordered evening meal in the restaurant and my wife ordered macaroni cheese and chips, granddaughter ordered sausage and mash and I chose steak pie and chips which all 3 meals tasted lovely and hit the spot. Breakfast was ok and filling but worth the £11:95 being charged? ....not really in my honest opinion. All together staff were friendly and pleasant, bed comfortable and yes I'd definitely be back!

On arrival at the hotel very impressive on the outside, the room we had needed to be upgraded and cleaned properly drawers missing at bed side bathroom need to be replaced and also cleaned properly door was very dirty the photo I have put on is the presentation of the mike coffee etc not what you wound expect

The receptionist on arrival was very friendly and helpful as was the restaurant staff and food was good but the receptionist on in the morning was unfriendly and looked like she just got out of bed hair look still wet not a good impression to leave on

Their is a charge for our furry family don’t know why as nothing except bowls were in the room most people travelling with dogs would have there own bowls

Booked 14 rooms for family for our 30th anniversary vow renewal, had read some reviews about the hotel & was quite anxious but when we arrived needn’t have worried.
Hubby, grandson & myself went up a few day’s earlier, (Friday)to get things organised for our celebration on Monday.
Had a meeting with Brian and went through all the details together, showed us all the rooms for the ceremony and meal, explained how it would all be set out etc.
Family were arriving on the Sunday, due to different times of arrival, Brian arranged the garden room for us all. We chose to go for mushroom soup & sandwiches for everyone and the food was delicious. One family member is gluten free and Brian arranged a special plate just for her, which she was surprised and delighted with, even commenting that some top hotels wouldn’t supply this.

The table was decorated beautifully, by Brian & Nicole, I suppled the candle holder’s & sparkling bits & everything else was from the hotel.
Everything went perfectly, apart from the rain, but it didn’t spoil the day, and we managed to get our photo at the anvil.

Our meal came out on time, and the food was amazing, everyone got what they ordered, great service from the staff all evening.
Everyone had an amazing time here, and have only received great reviews from them all.

Breakfast was lovely and a good selection of hot food, with cereals & yoghurt.

Thank you also for the prosecco & chocolates which were left in our room, to celebrate our day, a lovely touch.

Staff overall were very helpful and worked hard, especially the bar staff, whilst we were there, and we had no concerns.

Yes the hotel does have it faults, restaurant and bar area seating needs replacing or cleaning,
Reception could be more clearer,
Some of the rooms need a makeover
But this is an older hotel and allows dogs so this should be taken into account.

This is not a 1st class hotel, but it has charm & character, but I couldn’t fault the service & look forward to returning again soon.

Welcoming staff friendly. Stayed in room 37 which is very poor. The bath panel is held up on 2 pieces of wood. There was hair on the shower screen which also doesn't screen any water and a large puddle of water needs mopping up off the floor after every shower. Radiator electric wire out. Sink chipped and both taps say cold. Hot bath tap not labelled either. Toilet makes noises for nearly 10 mins after every use. Lampshade caped in dust. Bed squeaky. Window can't be opened due to ugly curtain rail box which is a shame as room air is very dusty - not great for an asthma sufferer. Walls dirty and marked. Sticky mark on desk top. Wall lights not properly attached to wall. Damp patches on bathroom walls. Can hear every single noise and conversation from rooms beside or above you. Desperately needs updating. Did not have dinner or breakfast. Upon checking out, staff did not ask how our stay was and just said "room number? All done. Drive safe". No thank you or anything. It was a huge disappointment and not what we'd expected upon seeing the website.

The gentleman on reception was very nice, we were in room 23 and my Son and his Partner and my 2 Grandchildren were in Family room 24 we had our 18mnth old grandaughter and no Cot's available??? I thought the Carpeting and Decor in the stairs and landing were modern and contempary the rooms however are much to be desired, tired, dated, smelled musty, I didn't want to take my clothes out of the case, I was attending my Son's wedding and didn't want my clothes to smell. They did provide Ironing board and Iron in the rooms and there was a Hairdryer, the beds were uncomfortable just a basic sheeting on the mattress. Take plenty of money as this is not cheap, food expensive, drinks extortionate it's just not worth the money. Breakfast ok. I just couldn't wait to leave.

Don’t be fooled by the pictures on the web, this hotel is grim! We were greeted by a friendly lady in reception which is actually a cupboard which she affectionately called her shed.
Most of the staff are friendly which is its only attribute. Food is overpriced and not even nice. The chef seems to think that chicken supreme is overcooked grilled chicken on the bone, chips and no sauce . The seafood linguine was inedible and sent back. Drinks are overpriced and bar closed at 9.30 without telling customers…said it’s Scottish law ?
The outside areas could be lovely but gutters are falling down, cobwebs everywhere and whole are needs to see a jet wash …
Room 23 …yuk…so pleased I took slippers…no way would I walk on that carpet ! The bedside cabinet was missing its drawers with the runners showing and the whole room was filthy with dust all around the edges and cobwebs all over the window. Saving Grace to our experience was we were there for a happy occasion with friends which was lovely

Worst hotel we have EVER stayed in! Came for the weekend for a wedding. No hot water. Staff very unhelpful and very unprofessional. Waiter who was running the wedding tipped a full tray of Prosecco over the bride and bridesmaid! Food not edible at the wedding breakfast or evening meal. Told they were short staffed but didn’t see the manager until we complained when leaving. Owner and owners son very rude when complained to them!
The rooms are awful so dated and dirty. Very noisy, the fire doors are loud, you can hear when someone flushes the toilet in the room above.
Window didn’t shut and we were on the ground floor, view of over grown shrubs! Mould and dirt in the bathroom, cobwebs and dust everywhere.
DO NOT STAY HERE!

My husband booked a romantic night away at the hotel we stayed at when we married in 2006. When we arrived we could tell that the hotel had changed a lot since then. Lots of things looked a bit untidy. The receptionist was very nice but the reception area and rooms we could see into were very dated, scuff marks everywhere and very basic. We followed directions to our room, passing an emergency exit door which was open and letting garden debris into the building, leaves all over the carpet. We got to our room, a 4 poster room and were immediately disappointed. Everything was bare, all the walls had either repair marks or scuffs on. The bed linen was plain white, no cushions or furnishings like in the few pictures on the website. All of the bedroom furniture looked like cheap MDF furniture and was all scuffed and battered. On entering the bathroom to check the jacuzzi bath found 2 very large stains on the floor and the bath had scum around the lip and hairs on the edge of the bath. By this time i was really upset and disappointed and my husband went to reception to complain. He came back with the key to an opposite room. On entering we found exactly the same situation, only this time food stains on the curtains and chair and hairs on the dresser as well. Both rooms looked very dated and unappealing for the money we were being charged. We decided we could not stay there and went to reception to ask for a refund. The receptionist got the manager for us who was apologetic, offered us a further room to look at but we declined and asked for a refund as it had upset us that much. The refund was processed immediately and we found alternative accommodation. I do want to stress that we did not use the bar or dining facilities so cannot comment on these. However, when booking a stay you expect the rooms to be as described. The parts of the hotel we saw looked very dated, poorly maintained and unclean. I think it could do with a massive overhaul top to bottom to compete with the other hotels in the area which are much nicer for less money.

In my opinion The Gables was simply not worth the £96.05 I paid for my one night stay without breakfast.

I booked the Gables for a one night stay with my family to enjoy the sights and surroundings of neighbouring Gretna Green. I had contacted the hotel prior to my arrival to let them know that I was travelling with an Autistic child and to request a travel cot. This was no problem and the lady I spoke with on the phone couldn’t have been more helpful.

Upon arrival to the hotel I discovered that there was indeed a travel cot ‘dumped’ in the room. It was lying on the floor unconstructed and sheets thrown on top. Now, for any person who knows, loves or lives with an Autistic person you can imagine how this was examined and interpreted. My child did not want the cot up in the room because it simply shouldn’t be there in his wee eyes because it wasn’t there when we arrived. So, because of this we had to allow him to sleep in the bed which he then fell out off multiple times during the night before my husband just lay beside him. Thankfully he didn’t break any bones.

The heat in the room was horrific and this was not during the heatwave. The outdoor temps during the day were averaging at 15-16 degrees so I cannot understand the excessive heat. We shared a fan between us but it made for very uncomfortable sleeping. The hotel is just tired, fixtures and fittings are old, there were holes in the walls, the door was dirty and it just felt neglected.

As a family we felt neglected by the staff also, the receptionist was the only member of staff I encountered and even at that it wasn’t the most pleasant of experiences. I hate writing negatively but I just expected more, we had stayed in a Premier Inn the 3 nights previous for half the price and it was 10 times the experience. Just don’t waste your money.

The outside of the hotel looks lovely however looks can be deceiving! The reception staff on arrival were all on their phones talking and not welcoming, no information was given about the restaurant or breakfast we had to ask. The room was filthy, see photos attached. Waiting staff took orders trying to remember and not written down so side orders didn’t come out with meals, evening meal was adequate however breakfast was dire. The beds were uncomfortable as springs were exposed. Dirty behind beds and 1970s decor, the curtain ties were hanging out of the walls and the window was left open on arrival.
