Saplinbrae Hotel and Lodges showcases the best in relaxed dining and living, where the quality of service and commitment to consistency is excellent, but still personal and fun. Our bedrooms have historic charm, complemented with local art, antique prints and small touches of tweed from our local mill. They are a fitting counterpart to the spectacular views from your window of acres of uninterrupted rolling farmland. Our self-catering lodges offer a home from home with the benefit of hotel dining right on your doorstep. Our dining room and lounge bar offer relaxed, all day dining and a wide selection of craft beers, Scottish gins and malt whiskies. Having a strong agricultural connection, we deem provenance to be of the highest importance. We are genuinely committed to sourcing locally, it truly is a case of from farm to fork at Saplinbrae. Located just outside the village of Mintlaw, 30 miles north of Aberdeen, we are only 15 minutes to both Peterhead and Fraserburgh.

We stayed at Saplin Brae due to family business in the area. We were in the smallest lodge , Willow, so just the two of us along with our small dog.

The staff at the hotel were incredibly helpful all the way through from my first enquiries to check out. It was clear they are taking their Covid precautions seriously and our accommodation was spotless.

The location is great for dog owners as Saplin Brae has a footpath from it that leads to a large fishing lake and there are some great walks. One thing for dog owners to note however is that only one of the lodges has an enclosed area (Shooting Lodge).

Willow Annexe where we stayed is kitted out with everything you could need microwave/hob/cooker/freezer/fridge etc. There is also a washing machine but no tumble dryer (unless it is a combi and I missed that as we didn't have the need to use it). The accommodation is snug but for two with a small dog it was fine, anyone with a larger dog (collie size and up) might struggle.

The living accommodation is open plan and unfortunately there are no windows aside from roof lights although we didn't find that a problem as we were out all day and expect most guest would be too.

Our only "grumble" was that the position of the bedroom is facing the courtyard and windows of the Shooting Lodge. The bedroom has huge windows and french doors which should let in lots of light but unless you are comfortable waving at the neighbours from your bed, or happy them seeing your pjs etc, you end up having to keep the curtains closed. If no one is checked in next door this is obviously not an issue.

Our first night was disturbed by the ladies staying at the Shooting Lodge all popping out to have a midnight cigarette in their courtyard and chatting loudly (outside our bedroom). To be fair to them the next day they realised we had booked in and there wasn't a repeat of this.

We would definitely stay at Saplin Brae if we were in the area again but maybe go for a larger lodge to avoid the privacy issues and gain a bit more space.

Were are three couples who stayed in the shooting lodge in March 2020. The lodge was beautifully warm and spotless with tea, coffee, biscuits, bread etc all provided. We eat dinner in the hotel which was very nice and had the full breakfast the following morning which was superb. This is the third year we have used the lodge and hotel and will certainly be back next year.

We were made very welcome despite tight observance of Covid rules. Dianna was a very attentive host - she looked after us very professionally.

Lovely house in peaceful settings, large bedroom, comfortable bed and quiet. The food was very good served in a beautiful double bow fronted room overlooking the garden

The setting is beautiful.

We will visit again !

We stayed here for a night after a birthday dinner. The dinner was excellent. Staff were attentive and helpful. Our superior room was very comfortable with a huge shower in the modernised bathroom. As you might imagine, the hotel was peaceful and quiet overnight but reassuringly busy on the Saturday evening.
Sunday morning breakfast was leisurely and all one could ask for with the addition of a roe deer nibbling its way round the lawn.
We thought this was a well run hotel with good staff and a variety of interesting rooms.

The catering at this hotel is excellent - good quality ingredients (many of which are local) and some obvious talent in the kitchen. All the food, dinner & breakfast, was top notch with great flavours and technique. Also really good to see a hotel offering good value for money on their drinks pricing, which was so refreshing when many or most hotels succumb to the temptation to charge way over the odds.

All the staff were welcoming, proficient, and friendly.

It doesn't get 5stars because the family room/suite we stayed in could really do with an overhaul. It was clean and in pretty good condition, but very dated and fitted with some pretty basic furnishings. Looking at some online photos, it may be that other rooms in the hotel have been refurbished more recently, so this issue may be limited to the family suite.

Overall, if you value good food and service, with reasonable prices, then this hotel is highly recommended.

Myself and my daughter enjoyed a night at this lovely peaceful hotel. The check in process is very easy and all the staff we met were very friendly and helpful, making us feel welcome. We found our room very comfortable and had everything we needed, and my daughter was particularly pleased with the Tunnocks Teacakes on the tea tray. The beds must have been comfortable as we both slept soundly.

We had a lovely breakfast here, and would have liked to sample the dinner menu too which sounded great if time had allowed. We also enjoyed a peaceful stroll through the woods behind the hotel, where there is also a lake and various pathways to explore.

The location of the hotel is great too with various local shops and amenities just up the road in Mintlaw, as well as Aden Country Park - a firm family favourite. Roughly a 15 minute drive into Peterhead, and a handy base for exploring the wider area.

The only negative is that we weren't able to stay longer this time - will hopefully be back again in the future.

We stayed at the Saplinbrae hotel for 3 nights at the end of November. This is a beautiful old building in a lovely country setting. We unfortunately didn’t get time to have a walk around the lake so will save it for next time. Our stay was fantastic! Our welcome was warm and friendly and we had a lovely room which had everything we needed and the bed was very comfy. The staff were all very pleasant and nothing was too much trouble.
The best bit was the food, just brilliant, the roast beef Sunday dinner is one of the best I’ve ever had and the dessert? Amazing! After a great nights sleep we were served a delicious breakfast in the cosy dining room with a log fire crackling away. The full Scottish was delicious, as was the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs and on the last day I had the porridge which was also spot on! We saw many people arrive during the morning to enjoy tea and a variety of different flavoured scones, which are also supposed to be fantastic but alas, after a fully satisfying breakfast we were never going to fit one in so this will also be saved for our next visit as we will definitely return!
Excellent!

We stayed here for one night in the hotel to meet up with friends who stay locally . We were in room 5 Which looks out the back of the hotel .Lovely comfy king size bed with nice linen . TV and tea / coffee making facilities, biscuits and bottled water and hand gel supplied in room. Bathroom had a walk in shower with plenty power and plenty towels . Shower gel , shampoo and liquid soap provided. Breakfast was cooked to order and was very nice . Pleasant and helpful staff .
In the morning we went for a relaxing walk around the fishing lake nearby and enjoyed the morning sunshine then had coffee in the bar of the hotel before going home.
Would definitely recommend.

We were booked into the Saplinbrae Hotel in Mintlaw for 2 nights. However Storm Arwen arrived and affected all our plans for the weekend so we only stayed one night. The electricity and all methods of communication went down about 5 pm on the Friday. I believe the hotel’s electricity was reconnected on Saturday afternoon but we had checked out about 12 noon. As I write this on the Wednesday I am aware that many households in the area are still without power.

We were disappointed that we were unable to enjoy the hotel’s facilities and cuisine at its best, but the staff were AMAZING and did their utmost to ensure guests were fed, albeit with cold food choices etc, kept warm by the cozy log fire in the lounge/dining area, and supplied with alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages during the evening. They obviously worked by torch and candlelight, so not the easiest of circumstances. Guests were given battery operated portable lights to get about and take to their rooms. Breakfast was also a cold affair, although flasks of boiling water had been delivered to the hotel, not sure from where, but at least we had a hot drink to warm us up in the morning!

When we had first arrived our room was cozy and the modern shower room looked very nice. We looked forward to using the large shower cubicle. However as there was no hot water, it was not to be. Our only negative comment is that our room had an old fashioned single glazed draughty window which meant the room soon became very cold. The public areas of the hotel had secondary glazing.

Hopefully we will return at a later date!
