Having had lunch here a few times and always been very impressed I was disappointed on my last visit with the steak pie which was one of the specials that day. The beef was excellent quality but was undercooked and the gravy was very thin and quite bland. I was also disappointed with the accompanying vegetables namely carrots and turnip... More

Popped in for breakfast after a long walk. Had a bacon roll and sausage roll - was best I've had for a long time. Coffee was lovely too. Lots of scones, home bakes etc we will definitely make this one of our regular stops.

My partner and I found this a lovely setting, very warm and helpful staff. The hotel was clean, warm and like something from a period drama film with nice burning fire. The food lovely with great choices and very good prices. We will most certainly be going back here and may stay overnight next time as very tranquil with plenty... More

A few of us booked dinner here on a vile November evening. The bar and restaurant has a great atmosphere, and we were very well looked after by well trained and delightful staff. The menu was highly enticing, the food well presented and tasty. Much is made of using top quality local produce and this has to be highly commended.... More

Had a great meal on Saturday evening with family. This is a lovely family run and very family oriented hotel. We have never been disappointed when we have visited either at hotel or at previous establishment The Lodge Strichen.

Stayed in room 7 , double superior, the room was lovely and had everything that we needed, kettle, hairdryer, bathrobes , wifi ect. The breakfast was excellent, if you want dinner there I would recommend booking as early as possible as we tried to book but it was full.

Its October, out of season, we are up for a funeral, Hotel is close to Mintlaw and the church, arrive 10pm, hotel is quiet ( in fact deserted) but hey ho - to the bar, 2 pints of perfect guinness later for me and we are both off to bed, staff are off home, room 7, massive 6ft x 7ft... More

A very special evening in a lovely diningroom with a delicious choice of food. We all came away full. The food was beautifully cooked and very creative. The onion relish was particularly special. The staff in the diningroom went out of the way to help as well.

It had been a long time since I was last in the sapline brae so when my mum and dad said it had recently reopened I jumped at the chance of a little bit of nostalgia. It was as good as I hoped it would be. I had the fish at the time and thoroughly enjoyed it. I would recommend... More

We stayed here on a visit to Aberdeenshire to see our friends as they recommended it. We were so pleased they did, such a pleasant change after staying in an airport chain hotel the night before. Sadly we never experienced the restaurant although maybe next time we're up, the breakfast however was delicious and the staff are fantastic.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Originally built in 1756, Saplinbrae Hotel and Lodges showcases the best in relaxed dining and living, where the quality of service and commitment to consistency is excellent, but still personal and fun. All of our nine bedrooms have historic charm, which we have complemented with local art, antique prints and small touches of tweed from our local mill. They are a fitting counterpart to the spectacular views from your window of acres of uninterrupted rolling farmland. Our self-catering lodges can be found in the hotel grounds-firstly, our stone Shooting Lodge which features four double en-suite bedrooms and a spacious kitchen-living area, and then our two cozy chalets. The hotel dining room offers relaxed, everyday dining, with contemporary takes on traditional foods. Having a strong agricultural connection within our team, we deem the provenance to be of the highest importance. We are genuinely committed to sourcing locally, and always source from Buchan, Aberdeenshire and Scotland as far as possible-our fish comes from suppliers in Fraserburgh, Peterhead and Sandend, our beef from Foveran, much of our pork and lamb from our own family farms in Kininmonth and the Black Isle and our vegetables from Morag in Crimond. We serve lunch and dinner daily from 12.00pm and 6.00pm, and you can pop in past anytime for a slice of carrot cake and a coffee. We are located in North Aberdeenshire, and Saplinbrae is the perfect seat from which to enjoy a weekend away: great walks, around the Pitfour Estate and the Buchan and Formartine Line, can be found on our doorstep, as well as Aden Country Park and several local golf clubs only a few miles away. We have great links with local fly fishing and shooting clubs for those looking for a wee bit of adventure, and can recommend the perfect spot to enjoy a good book for those who prefer a slower pace. ... more   less
