Situated on top of the hill with fabulous views
Great bar and good food to say it’s pub grub. Had a fabulous steak and gammon was really good.
Front of house Staff, although very young and inexperience did show thro at times, were lovely and couldn’t do enough for you.
Covid systems in place were very good with constant cleaning of tables.
Reception area needs redecorating as paintwork does not give a good impression.
Unfortunately for us the rooms let the place down and are in great need of refurb. Our room (7) had a great front outlook but was so dingy and the piece of material at the window!!! Well words fail. The bed however was fabulous, thick mattress beautiful white linen and the towels were the largest I’ve seen for a long time.
Bathroom. There was no cold water pressures do whilst there was a notice regarding very hot water this was we believe dangerous. Shower screen would be better then the antiquated shower curtain that raps around you. YUK
Good overall 3 night stay and if The issues were addressed it would be near perfect

I remember this hotel from my time living in Cheltenham in 1970's so booked for overnight stay after Christmas this year. I think the hotel was perhaps in its heyday as I remember it. Rooms adequate, bed comfortable but all rather dated. However, we had a room with the wondeful view, which made up for a lot!
The evening meal in the restaurant was very good and reasonably priced, the waiting staff were charming and the ambience of the 'verandah' room was quiet and restful.
Breakfast was something of a disappointment, however. Tables were not laid up properly, some items on the breakfast bar had run out and the service was very slow.
Staff always pleasant but a little overstretched, perhaps.

I drive past here twice a week on one of the many bus routes I serve and it’s always looked lovely and there’s a wonderful view across to the Malverns and beyond.

After lockdown eased, it was at the top of my list of places to try with my partner. We were not disappointed. The food was excellent, the buildings and grounds all well kept and clean and as it was a hot sunny clear day, the view was amazing.

But what really stood out from all of these very positive and lovely things was the service. We had a very warm welcome and excellent service throughout our visit. We left not only feeling well fed and watered but also very valued as customers. We will without doubt be back again.

If you are looking for a varied well priced menu with something to suit almost everyone, a relaxed environment, great views and service, the Rising Sun is highly recommended.

I've stayed at this hotel many times, generally speaking it is what it is, a reasonably priced Green King hotel. The rooms are basic and priced accordingly, there is bar and restaurant serving a good choice of menu.

Unfortunately during my last 2 trips to this hotel (Nov '21 and Dec '21) the WiFi reception has been absolutely awful. I mentioned it to the staff on both occasions. In November I was informed it was because my room was too far from the reception area! In December I was roomed right next to the reception area and the reception was just as bad. After complaining again I was informed it was because "the hotel was constructed of Cotswold Stone"! Maybe they changed the construction in between my previous visits and November/December 2021?

This hotel should not be advertising "Free Wi-Fi" as it does not provide it.

The staff were fantastic. Efficient, friendly, helpful and professional.
We attended a birthday party and the spread was plentiful, very varied and everything was delicious. Dinner was excellent, no complaints here. The breakfast was disappointing. Not well laid out and have honestly had better breakfasts at Premier Inns. The outdoor seating areas had magnificent views, as did the restaurant. Nice bar area. Our room was dreadful. 70s furniture, what little there was. Someone has already touched on the very tired headboard and carpets (no I would not walk around barefoot). They must have used hospital grade disinfectant because it smelled exactly like a hospital, not very comforting or appealing. The magnificent views were marred by blown/dirty windows which were dressed in shabby green curtains and very tired nets. The room was so hot you could have roasted a turkey, as the window was set to open about 3 inches. I was up all night trying to stay cool, spending time in the hallway and even in the car park. The room reminded me of something out of a low budget horror movie, expecting to see an old lady in a rocking chair sitting in the window. As a restaurant and bar it is a great place to go, as a hotel, maybe try to find a Premier Inn. I understand that the Greene King Group has been sold to Hong Kong's richest family for £2.7bn. Maybe they will upgrade the headboard :)

We recently spent a weekend here as we were taking part in a local MG run. The location is lovely, on a hillside just a couple of miles from town, with fabulous views. We liked the fact that there was plenty of outside seating, including a covered area in case of bad weather. The room was a little shabby but very clean -it would have benefitted from a new carpet, but I suppose funds are short during a period when they must have been closed for many months. There was plenty of hot water ( a little too hot at times!) and liquid soap & shower gel were provided. The TV was a good size so no problems watching the football! Coffee-making supplies were limited but replenished each day. We ate in the restaurant. Impressed with the breakfast options, the evening meals were standard pub food but quite acceptable. A couple of mistakes/misunderstandings with the food order but nothing serious. The staff were very pleasant and helpful and it was nice to see adequate staffing levels at this difficult time. One suggestion (as a smoker) - why not put an ashtray near the entrance as guests approach from the car park? I hate throwing my cigarette ends on the ground, but sometimes there's nowhere else. All in all a very pleasant stay and we'd certainly book here again.

Room was basic for £110 a night
Carpet in corner of room had two huge indentations/stains, but bed was lovely and soft and I had a great night sleep. The shower, despite changing temp on occasion was powerful and lots of hot water.
My main issue with room and actual communal areas around the hotel was it was really cold. Kept jacket on all day and evening.

Views were spectacular and garden area really lovely
Lots of parking available

Food itself was lovely but in the evening couldn't eat dessert as I poured my custard over which was cold ( had been warmed but prob sat for was while) and ruined the dessert.
Breakfast was again lovely but had cold beans this time. Just feel a little more attention to detail and could be amazing.

The Rising Sun Hotel

Cleeve Hill

Great location stunning views but a Tired hotel

795265213

So firstly I must say all the staff were great and worked hard. The hotel is clean but due to just lack of basic refurb leaves it looking grubby

So our room had the over whelming smell of shake and vac or air freshener, this is to cover up a on going damp problem as you can feel the humidity in your room.

The carpet in our room was worn which instantly made the room look dirty which it wasn't but you couldn't help but get that God I don't want to not walk bare foot in here feeling

Then the head board.... Omg. What were green king thinking of....

Two large worn head shaped disgusting holes where its so old. Again the bed was spotless but it made you want to shuffle down the bed and not touch it

I know cash is short in the hospitality area but this was way before covid and if you can't stretch to a new head board re cover it for a few pounds so guests don't think they will catch something or believe people have died and rotted in the bed... I refer to the air freshener comment above

All in all disappointed due to such basic silly mistakes by the corperation

If you work there and are reading this I thought you were all great and this isn't a reflection on you but Green King need to sort this out

Stayed one night at this dog friendly pub - 2 adults, 1 child, 2 dogs. Very friendly and obliging staff at all times. Great location too with a stunning vista over the Cheltenham area below.

Room was clean and had some recent attempt at modernisation with a partial refurbishment although a little lacking in furniture, a bed side table would’ve been nice on both sides of the double bed. It was also very warm even without the radiator on so we slept above the covers with the windows ajar however the beds were comfy and the linen clean. The shower head was a little on the low side but there was good water pressure and nice hot water.

Food was typical chain pub fayre and overall passable for the price with the evening meal being significantly better than the English breakfast which was a bit insipid and could’ve been hotter although it was by no means inedible and the selection of cold breakfast items was very good. Of the evening meal the gammon, scampi and steak we had we’re actually very good and the steak in particular was seasoned and cooked perfectly.

Overall a pleasant stay and we would happily go back again.

We had the pleasure in staying in a 4 poster suite. It was well presented and very clean. The views are to die for from two bay style windows in the room which is pretty rare. Got to be the biggest hotel room ive ever stayed in very spacious. Only complaints about the room is that the floorboards creaked a lot must be very frustrating for adjacent room residents. Also loud noise after flushing toilet very loud especially in the wee hours. .........."Excuse the pun" Breakfast was ok personally had issues on two of 3 mornings. When discussed with staff told problems caused by chef on shift. So bit hit and miss. Staff need to write down orders as whats received wasnt always what was ordered. The breakfast mix ups didnt detract us from a great stay. One final point is Hotel has a weird smell as in could benefit from a refresh or needs to be aired out regularly. Reception not manned a lot of the time which does not make residents feel safe all the time. Sure we may return in future.

Hi! I'm sorry for the delay in this reply but we've been away on holiday until a few days ago. The Rising Sun does have quite a few stairs, including stairs down to the restaurant, where breakfast is served, from the rooms. The room I stayed in at end September 2015 was just down a few stairs and along a corridor from the reception desk, which was the ground floor. My room had twin beds and tea and coffee making facilities. Breakfast, which was cooked to order, was included in the price I paid. I'm afraid I didn't see or use a lift but you could contact the hotel to check.,
