We chose the Kingfisher (narrowboat) option to be a little more adventurous and were not disappointed. On arrival the hosts were more than welcoming and attentive which was a good start to our holiday. The narrowboat was luxurious with a large comfy bed, dishwasher, fridge, full size cooker and every other mod con you could want. Also worthy to mention was the powerful shower, central heating, log burning stove and ample hot water; quite remarkable given all of this is contained within a boat that felt very spacious and well cared for. After a few hours of instruction on day one we were ready and confident to sail the boat through the canal network towards Chesterfield. There was plenty of free visitor moorings along the way with the better ones having traditional pubs serving great food nearby, most notably; The Mucky Duck at Drakeholes. We found everyone we came into contact with along the way to be very friendly and helpful especially the more experienced boat owners which was invaluable given we were complete beginners to narrow-boating. On returning to Hawthorn Hidaway on our final night we took advantage of the fantastic facilities on site: the log burning sauna and hot tub. In summary our holiday was great value for money, the accommodation, (Kingfisher narrowboat) was 5 star with the added bonus of the boating experience. Ronnie and Joe have created a unique opportunity for couples, friends or family to experience this wonderful rural location set on the bank of the Chesterfield canal. It is quite rare to holiday without finding fault.

Thanks guys for such a lovely review. It was an absolute pleasure meeting you bot. We feel very privileged to share our part of the world with you, and loved that you had travelled all the way from Scotland. You cruised on the Kingfisher Narrowboat to Worksop and took to the Narrowboat life like ducks to water. I know you wanted to go all the way to the end of the canal but maybe next time hey? 🙂 Best wishes, Josephine and Ronnie

Wow what a stay! Walking through the woodland to get to the gate for the kingfisher was wonderful- from the romantic nooks, the floral love heart, little cabins for BBQ, sauna, yurt-it was gorgeous and felt like you were somewhere far from the hustle + bustle.
The narrowboat was more spacious than I expected, it had all the amenities you could need; cooker, pots + pans, kettle, fridge with small freezer section and even a dishwasher! A really comfy bed and small but ample bathroom. The outside area where the boat was moored up was lovely. A cute seating area to look over the water and incredible sunsets. A relaxation snug seat, a covered not tub and picnic table, all complete with twinkling lights, surrounded by woodland and really private.
We booked Sarah from Glorious Grazes to cook for us on the first night which we ate at the picnic table overlooking the canal- would highly recommend. Sarah is great and really caters to your likes and is so friendly. The second day we took the boat out- what an experience! would highly recommend that too! It took us around 3 hours to travel upstream to the Mucky Duck pub (also highly recommended).
The hosts Ronnie + Josephine were fantastic, anything we asked them they were quick to respond and really helpful. You can tell they really care about their guests having a great time. Overall a fantastic stay for a romantic weekend away, 5 stars, would highly recommend.

This was our second stay at Hawthorn Hideaway, this time we stayed in Owl Lodge, and it was just as magical as the first! From the moment we arrived, Jo and Ronnie, the amazing hosts, greeted us with their warm smiles and hospitality. They’re always ready to assist within minutes if you need anything, making the experience even more special.
The cabin is pure luxury, with a high-end kitchen and bathroom that really elevate the stay. The bed is extremely comfortable, with luxurious bedding that made it hard to get up in the morning! My personal favorite part, though, was the cozy log burner, which added to the charm and warmth of the lodge.
The sauna overlooking the large pond was a peaceful retreat where we could watch wildlife wander by, and the hot tub provided a perfect way to relax. The beautifully lit surroundings created an enchanting atmosphere in the evenings.
We loved the locally sourced produce for breakfast, and everything was spotless and immaculately clean. We can’t wait to return again and enjoy another perfect getaway with Jo and Ronnie!"

Myself and husband attended for our 10 year wedding anniversary and stayed on the Kingfisher Narrow Boat. It was picturesque, clean and very relaxing. We could not believe how private it was and did not see anyone other than the hosts and staff all weekend. The complimentary breakfast hamper was beautiful. We particularly enjoyed the chocolates, sausages and Columbian coffee bags (such a nice touch).
Kitchen is very well equipped, we cooked our evening meal on the Friday and breakfast on Saturday and had everything we needed and more. Such beautiful décor and we were surprised how warm the boat was. (disappointed it wasn't colder so we could sample the fantastic fire ha ha). The bed was extremely comfortable and much larger than expected.
The Hot Tub, steam room and sauna were all amazing and very clean. We had a great afternoon on the Saturday attending the sauna overlooking the duck pond followed by relaxing in the hot tub in the sunshine with the chickens roaming the garden.
Upon the hosts recommendations on the app, we dined at the Blacksmiths in Clayworth on the Saturday. Both the service and food were wonderful. We also both travelled to the Blacksmiths and returned back using the recommended taxi service. Malcolm is a very pleasant man telling us some history of the local area.
Josephine and Ronnie were very welcoming and could not do enough to ensure that our stay was as relaxing as possible.
We both did not want to leave and came home feeling very relaxed and rejuvenated.
Thank you for a wonderful stay.

On arrival we used the wonderful app that is you’re guide to you’re stay and gives you all of the info needed to let ourselves in the gate, signs used to find the car park, lovely and secure behind locked gates short walk through the beautiful woodland to a lovely haven, We found our cabin easy keysafe access, let ourselves in and swan lodge was all lit up and a lovely breakfast basket was on the table, the bed was lit up when we walked in and wowed us straight away!! The owners Josephine and Ronnie have literally thought of everything, fresh milk and butter in the fridge with locally sourced bacon and sausage, a stunning kitchen area equipped with all you need and even out door dining equipment and a dishwasher to save washing up. My husband and I had the massage and wanted the private so I h but unfortunately the chef was booked up, but the massage experience was calm and serene and a very beautiful experience also, the woodland was all lit and decorated for Halloween and beautiful coloured lights and lit sauna and steam rooms they really have thought of everything.I woke early the next morning after a lovely meal from a chinese takeaway in misterton(fully recommended) near the coop, We showered and got in the hot tub and it really did not disappoint watching the light come up in a hot tub felt very special we can’t wait to stay again!! We checked in and out and never saw a soul but it just all added to the lovely ambiance and privacy that josie and Ronnie have created, I absolutely totally recommend a stay at this place worth every penny, They saved our Anniversary and we are glad that we went there instead truly magical ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Wow where do I start, you made a potentially stressful surprise 40th birthday night away an absolute pleasure to arrange. From the point of first contact right until check out the communication and service was exceptional. The moment the gates opened we was met with a feeling of tranquillity and calm, the hustle and bustle of life just melted away. We were greeted and shown to our lodge, which was the Owl Lodge. The lodge is beautiful and even better in real life, everything in it had a luxury feel, the bedding and towels were soft and of high quality. The balloons as arranged were in place and exactly as described. We then had the most relaxing couples massage in the tranquil and comfortably warm yurt. It was unbelievable; I have had many a massage over the years, some in the UK top spa’s and this was up there as one of the best. We then used the sauna, which was ready and set up for us, with towels and was exceptionally clean. We decided to retreat to the lodge for a while to relax, where the beautiful chickens came to say hi on the decking and really entertained us, but they were respectful and did not invite themselves in. We made use of the rain shower which again was powerful and hot. It was then time to go to the yurt where they had transformed it into the most beautiful setting for our private fine dining package, Candles and mood lighting with our own music playing added to the cosy ambience. WOW the food was unreal, full of flavour and looked stunning. Yet again a sense of relaxation and there was no rush all was in our own time, which was a common theme throughout our stay. We made use of the hot tub which was clean and put a lovely end to the evening. We lit the fire in the lodge, where the wood supplied was plentiful and this also had a lovely relaxing feel to it. The bed was WONDERFULLY comfortable and with a spritz of the complimentary sleep spray we had the most amazing night sleep. The breakfast hamper was of premium quality and really set us up for the day, we really did not want to leave, and we both said that we felt so relaxed and refreshed. Even on leaving there was a birthday card on the car window with a beautiful picture of the lodge on, again another beautiful touch. The night away was so easy to arrange inclusive of the optional extra’s. It felt like it was all too simple, and it was too good to be true, but it absolutely was not, everything was perfect. The attention to detail was phenomenal and no stone had been left unturned. So, thank you to all that was involved in our night away, it was even more perfect than I imagine. We can not wait to come back again, maybe for 2 nights next time

Oh wow where do WE start. Thank you for such an amazing and enthusiastic review. I've sacked our marketing manager and I'm hiring you instead :-) Honestly we're all just blown away on seeing this. It took me a couple of days of thinking of a worthy response - and I just can't do your review justice. We're printing this one out and sending it around all our staff as they can be proud. they all work so hard and we're over the moon that it is paying off. You are two lovely people, you didn't have to go to all that trouble and it's not expected. Your kind words have just made us all so happy, they are a little bit of oil in the machine that is Hawthorn Hideaway. Thank you so much.

It’s surprising what you can find literally on your doorstep. Only around 30 mins from where we live, Hawthorne Hideaway felt miles away from all that hustle and bustle of life. We stayed in Swan Lodge for 3 nights to celebrate both mine and my husbands birthdays, and we didn’t want to leave. The theme of Swan was incorporated throughout the lodge.
The property is well laid out in regard to space. Comfortable bed and sofa to binge watch a series on Netflix or Prime (not an issue for us, nor most as a lot have subscriptions now, but you will need a subscription to use the streaming services).
The lodge has a gas hob, oven and grill, cooker top kettle, microwave and toaster. There’s also cupboard space, dishwasher and fridge with small freezer compartment. Cooking utensils are supplied, including ones for outdoor use.
The breakfast hamper was lovely with fresh eggs. bacon and sausages. The bread provided also made lovely toast. The hamper also included cereal and pots of Jam.
Now for our selling point and what attracted us most…. The hot tub. It was so nice to just be in it to watch the sun set through the trees or look at all the lights illuminating the pathways. The hot tub was great for any time of day.
The shower room has a spacious shower, with a rainfall shower head fitting, which was also relaxing
We’re not sure when we shall return but we will do. Next time we may even treat ourselves to some of the other hampers they have - E.g Afternoon Tea. We’re also going to recommend to visiting family if they wish to have a full break with the site being so close to us.
We only really saw Josephine during our stay but from the point of enquiry, booking all the way through to leaving both Josephine and Ronnie have been super helpful.

Booked a weekend stay to celebrate my 50th Birthday. Ronnie gave us friendly welcome on arrival. The Swan Lodge was just beautiful! The whole retreat experience, including the steam room, couples massage was so peaceful and relaxing. We absolutely adored the hens who paid us a visit, tempted by our breakfast, they even ventured into our cabin for a tasty treat. We found the bed soooo comfortable and the hottub really soothing and relaxing. We cooked for ourselves one night, ordered takeaway the 2nd and enjoyed the tasty bacon/sausages etc provided for breakfast (we added hash browns and beans).
So how could our stay have been improved? A welcome booklet with some instructions.........steam room (we had no idea how to work it) how to operate the heating, what to feed the chicks (maybe a little bag of feed). A few more tea bags/sugar. The cabin lacked a chopping knife and a measuring jug. The toiletries to be labelled (I had no idea which the shampoo and body wash were) the soap dispenser beside the bathroom sink wouldn't work. The shower was scolding and would not cool down, we couldn't enjoy a nice warm shower.
What did we forget? Extra tea bags and sugar, although we did remember cooking oil and brown sauce (both provided btw)
We would love to come and stay again and would definitely recommend as a couples retreat to relax and unwind in natural surroundings. Thank you for having us!

So glad you enjoyed your stay and the facilities on offer. The hens especially are a highlight for a lot of our guests. They have been tamed with lots of cuddles from our daughter, Melody and love the company of guests. We apologise your stay wasn't up to our usual 5 star standard. We are sorry you did not have all have information needed, however, we do provide an extensive digital guide book with all the information needed for your stay. This is sent to guests prior to arrival, to download, onto their phone and use before and during your stay. We have purposely aimed for a paperless system. It has all the information including how to get here, instructions to get into the property, key codes for your accommodation, WIFI code, how to work the heating, instructions for the steam room, BBQ cabin and sauna, local information regarding restaurants, pubs and things to do locally. We even provide information regarding local healthcare if needed, it really is the bible for your stay. Unfortunately the knife was in the drawer and not with the utensils. The toiletries have now been labelled and thank you for bringing this to our attention. We always advise guests to please inform us of any issues during their stay, especially major issues. Unfortunately we did not know the shower till 2 days after check out and if we had know it would been fixed during your stay and a lovely warm shower would have been enjoyed. It was a simple fix once we were informed of the problem. We have decided not to provide feed for the chickens as we do not want this to attract vermin. We have added more tea bags and sugars to our breakfast hamper following your suggestion. We do have a list on our website of what is included in the breakfast hamper but people can add to this also. Even when things go wrong here at Hawthorn Hideaway, we aim to listen and correct the situation as quickly and best as we can. We hope you do come and visit again one day to enjoy a better stay. Best wishes, Josephine and Ronnie

After researching and lurking in the Facebook group for some time I took the leap and booked by 2 night stay at the Swan lodge and counted down the days, hoping it would be just what we needed and WOW! We were not disappointed! The lodge was beautiful and it was so sweet seeing our names on the little welcome plaque. There were clear instructions for everything and quality fixtures, fittings, products and utensils to use. The decor was giving “premium luxury” and as a city girl I was able to enjoy this little natural haven without a worry in my mind. We enjoyed private dining on our second night with Glorious grazes, posh picnics and Sarah was fabulous. I can’t recommend her enough. The food was divine and she is so easy to get along with, making the booking process and service on the night top notch! Lastly, Ronnie, Josephine and Melody are just fantastic hosts. Approachable, friendly and helpful. The couple of things we asked about were quickly answered and they couldn’t have been more willing to ensure we had an amazing stay. What more could you want? Beautiful location, night time hot tub, luxurious accommodation and friendly chickens keeping you company?! Thinking of going?….get booked!!!!!

Staying here is such an elevated experience compared to your typical lodge stay.
My hopes are importing but simple. Nice bedding and a good mattress, high shower pressure and clean. It scores 5 stars in all these respects and that’s just the beginning.
This place is like a sanctuary; from the moment you enter you’re lost in a different experience. Peaceful and away from the world.
The lodge itself is well equipped and you’re greeted with a welcome basket filled with local produce and hot drinks perfect for a short stay.
The magic is in the detail from all the various coloured lights that add ambience to the surrounding trees, hanging lights, micro lights, to the various thoughtful places to spend your time.
Lots of visitors too.. the chickens are very friendly and more than happy to wander around. Ducks walk by. Owls hoot in the trees.
The BBQ hut is a terrific experience that’s very memorable.
The location next to the canal invites nice walks to the neighbouring village.
The hosts are exceptional and nothing is too much trouble. They check in on you to make sure your stay is good.
Highly recommended.
