Last week we came back to France after 3.5 months so with all that has gone on we were rather pensive on how we would maintain our social distancing. We were happy and reassured that the management at Close de la Garde had done their homework well. The hotel complied with all the requirements on social distancing with eating areas whether inside or out very well spaced. The guest accommodation is in separate areas with no corridors and are extremely clean and well sanitised. We felt completely confident that all precautions were in place. This coupled with lovely food food and the usual friendly reception made for yet another great stopover on our way south.
When entering the estate through its metal gate, my wife and I were immediately struck by the soothing quietness of the place, interfered with only by an underlying low humming sound originating from the various types of flowers spilling over the white stone walls and the crunching of our shoes on the gravel. A noticeable flair of history radiated from the different buildings these walls make up. We grew yet more confident in our choice when we obtained our generous, cosily arranged and perfectly clean Suite. While the estate itself provides plenty of opportunity to explore and is rich with nice places to read, write and relax, the area around is abundant with historic places, chateaux and wineries to visit. Our host Manfred readily presented us with a bouquet of insider information and tips for our exploring plans. In our case, he was able to specifically point out those castles which are especially renowned for their garden designs, which my wife prefers over the interieur. The most enjoyable part of our stay though were the evenings when our host cooked dinner for us. After presenting us with different sorts of self-made aperitifs in the far-reaching catacombs of the estate, and providing us with its backstory, we were served an excellent, multi-course meal. When my wife remarked something about the fig trees in one part of the garden he even went to get his ladder between the courses and served them to us with the cheese! We absolutely enjoyed our stay and were especially impressed by Manfred’s superb hospitality. We are happy to return next year.…
A lovely overnight stay meeting a French/German couple, although we didn’t all speak each other’s language our host did! Beautiful 3course meal with home produce and local wine. The setting is so peaceful and the rooms fitted to a high standard. Manfred is a great host
Another great visit to this fabulous quiet, relaxing location. A great evening meal with fun people, them going south, us heading north, and Manfred our great host. Looking forward to our next visit! The rooms are clean, comfortable and peaceful, couldn’t ask for more.
My husband and I stayed for two nights at the beginning of November. Manfred was very welcoming and our room was perfect, with a spacious living area and amazing bathroom. Manfred entertained us with stories of renovating the buildings and discovering 'The Cave' in The Cave over pre-dinner drinks. Dinner was delicious, with plenty of local wine. Manfred ate with us and gave us the history of the area. Manfred advised us on places to visit and which wineries to purchase wine which was helpful as there are so many choices in the area. The countryside is beautiful and although the BandB is remote the peace and tranquility was a lovely change from other busy parts of France.
