Shibden Mill Inn nestles in the fold of the Shibden Valley overlooking the Red Beck, near Halifax, West Yorkshire (England). This 17th-century inn is steeped in history and has been sympathetically renovated and restored so as to retain as much of its original charm and character as possible.

I stayed for four nights on my own and had the most amazing relaxing stay. From the moment I checked in the staff were incredible, on hand to help with anything you need and always very friendly. They had great policies in place for social distancing including socially distanced tables in both the restaurant and beer garden and hand sanitiser everywhere. Whilst they were not servicing the room during my stay when I needed something I just asked and it was provided straight away. At no time did I feel unsafe and the standards were very high.
The table service both inside the restaurant and beer garden was a spot on, never had to wait long for someone to ask if I needed anything.
They have a great selection for breakfast with hot and cold options which made for a good start to each day. I ate in the restaurant twice and also tried their outdoor Crust and Craft pizzas. The food is exceptional, top quality dishes and prepared to an very high standard. The staff were great when I asked for recommendations on dishes.
It is also in a lovely location just outside Halifax and they have leaflets of recommended walks you can take, you can walk to Shibden Hall or you are a short drive/taxi ride away from the town centre where you can visit local attractions like The Piece Hall.
I have stayed there before and have every intention of returning at some point in the future. It was a lovely much needed break.

We booked for dinner, bed and breakfast for our wedding anniversary after we had enjoyed a lovely stay in November for my birthday. On checking in we were informed that they no longer do wine pairings with the taster menu despite it being on our booking confirmation. We checked in and the room (9) was lovely. We then went downstairs to enjoy a drink in the beautiful garden area. We were greeted and told to pick a table and they would be over shortly to take our drinks order. Despite not being very busy we were waiting 20 minutes before they took our order and another 10 minutes for the drinks to arrive! We then had the 5 course tasting menu which was absolutely lovely and we ordered our own wine to accompany the courses. The staff were very professional and friendly but I am not sure that we needed 5 separate servers on our table during the pandemic, surely it would have been far safer if they all had a separate area to work in? We had a lovely evening and retired happy to our room. The breakfast in the morning was served by a very pleasant and professional girl but I am not sure if she was overworked or they were short staffed in the kitchen. The service was slow and we never received the muesli or grapefruit dishes that we ordered. The breakfast that we did finally receive was delightful though. On checking out we had an issue with the bill - they charged us £550 for the room when it should have been £275!! This was resolved as soon as I pointed it out. I hope that Shibden Mill Inn can take these observations constructively. We loved the accommodation and the meal but there seems to be staff training or management training required. For the money that you are charging the service needs to be top class and wine pairings with a tasting menu should be a must as all competitor hotels are offering this. I am sure we will be back to Shibden and that the issues we had were a one off.

Stayed here for a night for a rare trip away. The location is really picturesque with a great beer garden, pop up craft beer stall and artisan pizzeria. We ate in the restaurant which offered first class food and wine at a very reasonable price and enjoyed some fine real ales and gin and tonics from the wide ranging bar selection available. The room was comfortable, clean and well equipped with a great breakfast provided the following morning. The staff were all happy and extremely friendly and are a credit to the inn. Would not hesitate to recommend to anyone looking for a relaxed night or two away.

Our first visit here and we’ll certainly be back. Lovely staff, great setting, beautifully clean and presented in the public areas and in our room. We booked last minute and had a standard double, which was far superior to some suites we’ve stayed in elsewhere. Lots of small touches, including quality toiletries, bottled water, dressing gowns.
We had lunch and breakfast here, and several drinks in the bar. The food was perfect, the drink choices very good (we own an award winning craft ale and gin bar, and are frequently underwhelmed by the lack of thought that takes the edge off otherwise decent venues. Not the case here.)
Had a good laugh at some of the petty keyboard warriors’ reviews - “no separate gluten free menu” , “no full fat milk” and my personal favourite: “small windows made it dark inside” 🙄 IT’S A 400 YEAR OLD MILL YOU MORONS!!

Ignore them all. This is a great place of quirky character and charm. The staff are attentive, engaging and efficient, and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Shibden Mill to anyone - unless they want vegan bedding or gluten free car parking. 😜

We’ve not been to the Shibden Mill Inn for a while. We booked very last minute for a Sunday Roast for our family of 4, deciding on a whim that we couldn’t face cooking and I’m so glad we did. The food was amazing and the service was great. The only criticism we had was that the table water we asked for didn’t materialise and my husband had to request another pint rather than someone spotting that he was ready for another but these were minor points.
The food wasn’t cheap but compared to other pubs we’ve eaten at, it certainly represented really good value for money. I’d happily pay a little bit more for quality food. The Yorkshire Puddings were particularly impressive!

Called on a rare lovely day after a walk through the valley. Great atmosphere outside with tables well spaced & pizza oven fired up! Good entry procedure but l was concerned at the lack of hygiene at the table. There was no hand gel on the tables & ours was dirty , having food scraps on from the last evenings service. I wish I’d mentioned it. It would be good practice if a spray cleaner & paper towel were provided so customers could feel happier if the staff either forgot or didn’t bother to clean tables properly. Unfortunately there was also a horrendous drain smell nearby & we noticed a few customers moving tables to escape it!
However staff were extremely pleasant & food was very good!!!

Deep in the valley there is an inn with comfortable rooms, good food and superb staff. Faraway from the trials and tribulations of the past four months we escaped to magic spot. Yes, there were Covid safe precautions but they were, as it were "socially distance" not "in your face". It was so relaxing with all a couple could desire for long awaited night away. Service was supreme, our dinner delicious .We expected a limited menu but there was an excellent choice. As for breakfast, a 2 paged menu for more than the fussiest person could ask for, every item normally available as their buffet was available. Our visit was a tonic, to be recommended!

First time visit but unbeknown to us, we've stayed and/or eaten at a few of the hotels in the "chain".
The location for this hotel is lovely, nestled at the bottom of a valley. We did come in the wrong way and were directed by satnav down an incredibly steep cobbled road! Avoid in winter!!!

The hotel welcome was warm and friendly. The bar/restaurant area was lively and used by locals for their early evening pints. Plenty of nooks and crannies to find for seating.

The meals we had were excellent. The Ham Hock terrine and pressed mackerel were a great start, as were the glasses of recommended accompanying wines.

Mains were Short-rib beef and Lamb, again with recommended wines. Both mains were superb!

6 cheese board to finish off.

For the location, interior, friendliness of staff and quality of food and drink, I would definitely recommend.

Oh and the breakfast room and food were lovely the following day.
Happy customers.

Stayed over and ate with friends in the restaurant. The drive down to the inn and it’s location is so quaint. The room was cosy and decent value for what it was, the shower room was modern with good water pressure. The dining room had a good atmosphere and the menu was fresh and varied I had the mackerel to start then the venison, the portion sizes were small and in our party some of us got a massive portion and others small which was a bit disappointing. Mine was delicious and cooked perfectly. The rest of our party were pleased with their choices except my partner who said the monkfish was tasteless and barely enough then the game pie which he said was sticky and the pastry undercooked inside which was a shame. The service was good, full drinks menu the flat white martini is a definite favourite. All in all a lovely experience just a shame about the portions and some of the food.

We stayed at Shibden just for one night between Christmas and New Year in the Anne Lister suite. What a beautiful room it is! When you walk in there is a free standing bath on a heated stone floor. The ceiling is incredibly high in this part with velux windows. The bathroom has a large walk in shower and the bedroom with sofa leads out on to a private patio. We dined in the restaurant for which I have done a separate review. Breakfast in the morning was in a lovely restaurant on the first floor, not where we had dined the previous evening. Everything is cooked to order and was beautiful like the evening meal. All of the staff we encountered were so friendly and a credit to the place. A couple of things to mention. Though not the fault of the inn we stayed on a night of torrential Yorkshire rain. The noise on the velux windows kept me awake most of the night. The door to the bathroom scrapes on the stone floor so again if anyone gets up in the night it will wake you up! Whilst shower gel, shampoo and conditioner are provided there was no body lotion. The outside space could be fantastic if it was made a little more private. They are missing an absolute trick by not having a hot tub and I’m sure it would look more inviting in summer without rain dripping off everything! The inn was beautifully decorated throughout, so cosy and inviting. It’s a really cute, quirky place and I would heartily recommend. We will visit again purely to try more of the delicious food!
