Large room with comfy beds and a lovely verandah with two chairs and a table. The room had a TV, fridge, air con (and a fan), kettle, tea, coffee, sugar, dried milk and good free wi-fi. There was flip flops to use, robes and 2 bottles of free water. There was no safe so we had to lock any valuables in our cases or carry them with us.
The bathroom had soap, hand wash, shower gel, foam bath (although there was no bath!), shampoo, conditioner, shower cap, cotton buds and tissues.
Breakfast was sausage, omelette, yoghurt, oatmeal, cereals, bread (and a toaster), butter, jam, croissant, fresh fruit. juices, tea, coffee and Thai food.
Do take the time to walk around the beautiful grounds and visit the small museum about Edward Weary Dunlop (if you go to Hellfire Pass he is also mentioned there). We also went down to the river first thing in the morning to take some lovely photos of the mist rising.

We traveled to the Sai Yok area of Kanchanaburi Province over the peak New Year holiday season and had the chance to stay at 3 different hotels (Home Phutoey River Kwai Hotspring Resort, Kwai Tara Riverside Villas, and Boutique Raft Resort). Home Phutoey was a great choice and a good value. We stayed in a River View Deluxe (room 9B) for about 3,750 baht/night.

POSITIVES
+ Beautiful view from our balcony above the river bend.
+ Nicely appointed rustic room, good WiFi, spacious bathroom with separate shower and toilet.
+ Amazing hotspring pool and normal pool overlooking lake, which is open in the early morning and evening. A great beginning and end to the day.
+ This is a large resort with some onsite activities, including a tree top adventure park (we didn't get a chance to try it).
+ Good buffet breakfast with Thai and Western options, including egg station. Meals can be taken at the restaurant with nice views of the river. Reasonably priced and pretty good.

NEGATIVES
- Not much. The location isn't ideal, but none of the places in this area are easily accessed without a private car. We hired a driver to take us from the Nam Tok train station to the hotel for 500 baht.

I would definitely stay here again and would recommend to others, although budget travelers could find other options nearby.

Pro
Deluxe river view rooms have awseome views of the river
Rooms are spacious and clean
Hotel was quiet and staff discrete
Pool was clean and set nicely overlooking the lake
Free canoeing is fun
Bathrobe included in the deluxe room for wearing to the pool
Breakfast was filling and simple. It was nice not to be tempted by too many cakes.
Jungle walks right out of the hotel
The hotel put on a discrete New Years Eve event with BBQ, happy hour etc.
On site museum is very basic, but has a real back story which makes it a must.
Food was reasonably priced for a hotel - approx 130BHT for a typical Thai dish.

Con
Superior room was quite dark and did not get any sun.
No tea and coffee in the Superior room.
Nearest shop for supplies is a few KM away, although the hotel does sell essentials.

Wow what a place. Made special by arriving by long tail boat. Easy and quick check in with a welcoming drink. Shown to our lodge which had views of the river valley. Excellent room with everything we needed. Only small issue was the bathroom although had ventilation it was very noisy and impossible to get cool with the room air con. You have to bear in mind this hotel is based in the jungle so be prepared to share your room with some of the local insect life. That is the only reason for marking the room cleanliness down as there were a lot if dead ants in the room. The pool was great just about the right temperature. The hot spa which ran along the edge of the pool overlooking the lake and jungle was very hot and soothing after a day walking. The restaurant and bar area was open air and over looking the river valley. Good cocktails and a good selection of food. Excellent and friendly service. Once again the local insect life did makes its presence felt but acceptable bearing in mind the location. Bed was comfortable and good night had. We had to be up early before breakfast officially started but they did bring out more than enough items to make a reasonable choice.

The room (cabin) was nice although looked a bit old but i think that was part of the design. Only one English speaking TV channel and that wasn’t anything good. Wifi usually didn’t work nor did cellular data. Dinner was expensive - about 1,800 baht for two (one drink each). Deep fried fish was overdone with little meat on it. Worst thing about the hotel was the continuous pollution from the hotel burning its surrounding trees and bushes. This is dangerous and is mostly PM 2.5 particles - I was shocked to realize the hotel itself was doing this without a care for their guests. Without the smoke, the view would have been good and might have been enjoyable outside (fires typically burn in Feb/March and sometimes April in Thailand). Hot spring was nice although too crowded after 6pm and my experienced ruined by smoke. I should have visited another time in the year. My mistake.

Dear Close_to_BKK_trips, Thank you for your recent stay at Home Phutoey River Kwai and sharing valuable perspective. We are deeply sorry to learn you were not satisfied with some of our accommodation. In order to clarify the matter, please allow us to take this opportunity to explain herewith respectively. Regarding Wi-Fi, typically, we absolutely do our best to provide free Wi-Fi service for all of our guests because we certainly realize how important it is nowadays. However, sometimes due to uncontrollable whether condition and unstable network processing from original provider telecommunication, may cause to internet signal in minor area. However, after hearing your observation, we have seriously determined to address the matter and so far, our Wi-Fi is comprehensively reachable as smoothly as normal. Concerning price, may we strongly convey that our chef always choose the greatest quality ingredient and produce to prepare the finest meal. We highly expect to serve the best cuisine for the clients. Furthermore, as you may be well aware that since our resort is situated in the middle of jungle, this is significantly caused to our cost of supply transportation. Additionally, according to credible survey, comparing our price to neighboring hotels under the same criteria, study clearly shows that our menu’s price is ranked at the proper position in the area of worth paying with reasonably affordable rate. Therefore, please do believe that according to deliberate consideration, truly guests are certainly served with rationally appropriate fare and ideal offer. Concerning the smoke, in general, the process of waste and leaves elimination at our property, would be proceeded as careful as fermentation for compost. Actually, we do not allow any burning activities on-site. Our entire staffs are also reiterated about this definite principle. However, after hearing your observation, we took action on the issue immediately by getting into the site and conducted the thorough investigation. Also, we called involved personnel for seriously reemphasizing original approach and of course the certain scheme has been appropriately executed. Therefore, please be assured that the matter would not bother the upcoming guest. Highly hope to welcome you back in the future. Regards, Home Phutoey River Kwai

Cannot say enough good things about Home Phutoey. If you are looking for somewhere to just relax, this is the place. Staff is exceptionally hospitable. Food at the restaurant was good, extensive menu at lunch/dinner and good variety at breakfast buffet. Best of all? Very few mosquitoes at the end of December. I am a magnet for mosquitoes and left with only a few bites. They mostly come out around dusk.

Definitely get one of the river view rooms with onsen, it is well worth it. The room has a generous amount of space with a nice deck for enjoying your morning coffee or afternoon beer. Everything was in very good condition including bug screens, air conditioning, updated LED lightening, good water pressure for shower.

They say the water in the onsen is refreshed twice/day to bring the temperature up but seemed to be refreshed 3x day. Seems they fully drain and clean the tub every other day. Check the temperature before you get in because the natural spring is definitely too hot. Yucatas are provided which gives it a nice touch. Alternatively there is a pool, hot spring pool and foot baths in the public areas.

If you feel like getting out and exploring the front desk can arrange activities. Prices may seem a bit high, but when you remember you’re in a rural area it makes sense. Trip to Erawan National Park is highly recommended. Kayaking was also enjoyable, it’s a short but beautiful stretch of river. You stop at one of their sister hotels which is walkable to a Mon village.

If you want something free to do, there are some options on the resort grounds. War museum and waterfall. There is also a Mon village with temple you can walk to from Home Phutoey. All in all, we throughly enjoyed our five night stay.

We stayed in the Onsen villa, which I strongly recommend. The currently reduced covid rates make the room extremely good value. Room was charming Thai tropical jungle style, situated on a hillside with an awesome view of the River Kwai. There was a large balcony with a seating area and the highlight of our stay-an Onsen. (Hot springs soaking tub) right on the balcony. The room was spacious, well furnished and comfortable, with modern convenience. We had our grandson with us and he was able to sleep comfortably on the sofa. Wi fi worked well, even in the room. The included breakfast buffet was excellent with Thai and western food including an egg station. Because of the isolated location you will probably want to eat in the restaurant. Well, unlike my normal hotel restaurant experience this one was excellent. Overlooking the river, with an extensive menu (English) featuring Thai food but with some western food. The service staff speak some English . Menu has pictures. Service was very prompt even though they were quite busy. Be cautious as portions are very generous, prepared as you request. Prices are very fair, given the portion size. With three people we averaged around 1100 baht a night (over 3 nights) including 1 or 2 alcoholic beverages each dinner. The grounds are very open and are like a tropical botanical gardens There is a large swimming pool, a mineral hot springs and a lake. There are lots of activities available, but we just came to relax. My wife and I felt this was probably the best resort we have stayed at in many years. Its about 75 km out of Kanchanaburi but well worth the travel. Should you have questions, message or email them, English is good and response time was prompt and thorough. Oh yeah, almost forgot, we were there in October and there were virtually no mosquitos.

I and my friends really enjoyed activities in resort such as kayaking, swimming and hot spring including rafting service that you can book on arrival date only. There are little museum, waterfall and mon village where you can visit by walk. Breakfast was good, food was delicious I had dinner for 2 nights but room service charge will cost you double price on raining day if I'm not wrong.

However this is my 2nd visit in this place and I will return again!

Recommended to visit in September onward

The location is amazing, with stunning views and a jungle setting. The pool is fab and really big and the rooms are comfortable... But.... The whole vibe of the place is quite depressing. It is run by a large company who are clearly out to make as much money as possible. The staff whilst friendly are unmotivated and the place is poorly maintained. The gardens are unkept with ponds everywhere that could be lovely but are just stagnant ponds of scum. The rooms are a bit tired with cracked tiles etc.

However, the in-house prices, do not reflect all this dilapidation and lack of care. The restaurant has extortionately priced beer that is then subject to an additional 17% service charge and tax, making it 60% more expensive than average hotel Thai prices. Water is only provided in small plastic bottles (unacceptable in these eco times). We were attracted to come here by the number of activities available (tree top experience, kayaking on River Kwai etc) but all of these are so overpriced even by European standards, that we couldn't justify doing them, particularly as we suspected they would be provided with the same lack of care as the hotel. Taxis out of the place are also ridiculously overpriced - we got one to the nearest place and then found a local taxi who took us around for a fraction of the price.

We have no problem paying for quality services and understand that resorts have overheads and so prices are bound to be higher than elsewhere. However, this was just off the scale greedy and combined with the lack of care given to the place, we felt that it was unjust. If this place could be given a bit of love and attention, then they could justify their high prices and it would be amazing but as it is, it didn't work for us and we would not recommend. A shame, as it has huge potential...

Dear clairec532, Thank you for your recent stay at Home Phutoey and taking the time to share valuable perspective. First of all, we are very surprised to see the score you gave us and deeply sorry about it. However, in order to clarify the issue, please allow us to explain further herewith. According to our philosophy, in order to accommodate the quality hospitality, we always strive our best to revitalize the property as exceptional as possible. Our definite conceptual commitment is to rejuvenate natural, peaceful serenity asset. In addition, recently we've invested a significant amount on refurbishment especially, in the area of facility's upgrade. Also, daily our gardeners are routinely assigned to tend the whole plants, tree zone very tidily, thus please be ensured that this topic has been closely taken care of. By the way, after hearing your comment, we've conducted the team talk to seriously emphasize and implement on this specific subject. In regard to the price, according to findings, comparing our restaurant to other tourist attraction sites elsewhere, excluding how difficult to get the groceries far from the middle of jungle like us, our property still stands on the category of worth paying at affordable price. Nevertheless, after hearing your comment, we've raised the subject on the meeting with involved responsible personnel so that an appropriate reassessment would be proceeded consecutively. . We hope you'd give us another opportunity to win your trust. Regards, Home Phutoey River Kwai

Built in a forest area, large property miles from anywhere. If you’re not driving there you’re pretty much stuck in the hotel with their activities. Petty run down, views of the river are its best selling point, although the air quality in the high season is awful. Plenty of mosquitoes even in dry season which is very unusual.
Average Thai food which was very disappointing and expensive, breakfast the usual serving of poorly thought out offerings. The staff were good, the river view villa was a reasonable standard, but nothing special for the price (4,000 +), internet varied from 10mbs to .02, yes .02..upload impossible.
Nice walks around the property, museum thing was dated and run down, nice old train there which was a surprise. Day trips expensive and elephant experience which is non starter these days, but if you’re visiting from out of Thailand you’ll find it fun, it has a tropical rainforest feel (although it’s not). Pool was quite small, leisure pedal boats were old, the sky walk I was surprised by, but didn’t want to take a chance on safety grounds.
Planned three days , stayed one.

Hello. From Bangkok you can take the train to Nam Tok station. At Nam Tok Station you can take a local pick up taxi to Home Phutoey for around 700baht per car. Just tell the full name of the resort to the driver and he will take you there.
