Majete Wildlife Reserve is one of the outstanding success stories of African conservation. Granted protected status in 1955, it became the subject of extensive poaching in the 1980s and 1990s. But a concerted joint effort since 2003 by the African Parks Network and the Malawi government - including the reintroduction of endangered species - has turned it into a model of sustainable development and biodiversity. In 2012 Majete became Malawi’s only Big Five Park. Located in the south of Malawi, Majete is an area of 70.000 hectares, part of Africa’s Great Rift Valley. The reserve is made up of mature miombo woodlands and granite topped hills that contrast with picturesque river valleys and lush riverine forest. For connoisseurs of wildlife many exciting encounters lie in store, with the chance to view many species including black rhino, leopard, lion, elephant, buffalo, eland, kudu, sable, suni, klipspringer, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest and zebra. Surrounded by 7,000 hectares of private concession, Mkulumadzi enjoys an idyllic location at the confluence of two rivers shaded by giant leadwood trees. It is the perfect combination of splendid isolation and first-class facilities. The lodge has eight superb chalets, each with spacious living quarters and private viewing deck. Guests can swim in our pool, dine under the stars, enjoy river cruises, game drives and walking safaris. Undiscovered by tourists, Majete is a true wilderness where every trip into the bush with our team of experienced guides will feel like an adventure. Guests arrive by a footbridge suspended over the Mkulumadzi River to discover a friendly welcome and many home comforts. The lodge has a restaurant with indoor and outdoor dining, a lounge and terrace, a bar and shop, swimming pool, viewing deck and a lapa for evening campfires. The perfect combination of luxury and isolation, Mkulumadzi boasts eight superb chalets set on the banks of the Shire River, shaded by giant leadwood trees and wild mangos. Each chalet has a spacious bedroom and lounge, ensuite bathroom, outdoor shower and private viewing deck where guests can sit back and marvel at the sights and sounds of the river. The bush chalets are luxurious and spacious with contemporary furnishings, some crafted from locally-sourced materials. They are flooded with natural light, giving you the sense of being in the forest without compromising your comfort and privacy. There is also an outdoor shower with a large rain shower where guests can enjoy the sensation of bathing under a waterfall. The shower is open to the surrounding bush with stone-clad walls for privacy. Each chalet has a sloping vegetated roof planted with indigenous species such as succulents, aloes, shrubs and grasses. This minimises their impact on the environment and keeps them cool in the hot season. Game drives and walking safaris are offered in the mornings and late afternoons, giving guests plenty of time to relax beside the pool, gaze at the resident bird population or listen to the grunt of hippos wallowing in the river. Afternoon tea is served on the terrace and on most nights dinner is served beneath the stars.

We regret that we only had one night in this stunning lodge. Our own little house with view to hippos in the river passing by. The food was amazing, the staff couldn’t be better- I felt like a princess. Jason was a stand in for the couple normally running the camp. He was

Dave and Tammy are wonderful hosts in this secluded and exclusive lodge within Majete Wildlife Reserve. We stayed in Villa #1 with an outstanding view of the confluence of the Mkulumadzi and Shire rivers. The villa was huge with an enormous bathroom and outdoor shower. The

Dear Foot_Loose Thank you so much for taking the time to post a review about your recent stay at Mkuumadzi and I am thrilled to hear that you had such a wonderful time! I will be sure to pass on your kind words to Dave, Tammy, Mustafa and the rest of the team as they will be glad to know you were happy with their service and hospitality. I am sorry to note that there was a problem with the hot water in your chalet and have flagged this comment for maintenance to look into. We hope that it did not put too much of a damper on your stay. How lovely that you got to see some of the less common antelope live sunni and Lichtenstein's hartebeest - very special sightings those are! Once again thank you for your comments, we really do appreciate them. We hope to welcome you back to Mkulumadzi one day soon or perhaps to one of our other lodges in Malawi, Zambia or Zimbabwe. All the best Steph

I stayed here for three nights on a recent trip to Malawi. Location: It’s about a three-hour drive from Blantyre Airport to Mkulumadzi, so it’s remote. When you arrive, the shuttle stops at one side of the river and you have to cross a rather rocky rope bridge before taking

Dear Commodore Many thanks for taking the time to post a review about your time at Mkulumadzi. We appreciate it very much. I am glad to hear that overall you had a good time and would like to address your comments/concerns: Reception: Apologies that it was a struggle to find someone to speak to in the main lodge area. I will pass this on to the management so they are aware as there is usually always someone in the main lodge area to attend to guests. Accommodation: I am happy to hear that you liked your chalet. With regard to there being no kettle, this is due to the camp running on solar power...in an effort to operate a more eco-friendly lodge. The use of a kettle or similar heating devices takes up a lot of power hence the reason we provide guests with flasks of hot water when requested. This would have been communicated during the welcome brief and i am happy you asked for a flask all the same as there is nothing better than enjoying a cup of tea/coffee in your chalet while taking in the sights and sounds around you. Communication: This is indeed a valid point which you have raised and something for us to look into. I am also happy to hear that you enjoyed your game activities. Majete Wildlife Reserve is a special place and i hope we will be able to welcome you back to Mkulumadzi Lodge one day soon. All the best Stephanie

Dear Safariholic, Thank you for your question. Many of our guests enjoy chalet 1 because it is right at the far end of the lodge and therefore is located at the confluence of the Shire river and Mkulumadzi river, however since you will be visiting in September, the water levels will be very low with the Mkulumadzi having dried out. Having said this, each and every one of our rooms are well appointed and all have equally spectacular views of the river and wilderness around it with lovely protruding decks which are merged into the surroundings. The rooms all overlook the Shire river. I hope this has helped :) All the best Gabriella
