Situated in the heart of the arctic, the mountain lodge exhibits a deep-rooted connection to Norwegian farming and cabin culture. On average, Norwegians spend 60 days a year in cabins. This is a part of their cultural heritage. In earlier times the farmers brought their livestock into the mountains on pasture during the summer, and while herding the cows and sheep they lived in small cabins. At the mountain lodge they lived by the food they made, the berries they gathered, and whatever the nature offered them. At Bjørnfjell Mountain Lodge we want to give you the opportunity to take part in this Norwegian cabin culture. Stay comfortable inside our cozy cabins or in a room in the main lodge while enjoying the surrounding nature.

My wife and I enjoyed our the stay at Björnfjell Mountain Lodge in January. We came to view the Northern Lights, which we saw one night from the outdoor hot tub. We enjoyed Cabin #3 and multiple Wellness Experiences at the spa (hot tub and sauna). There were plenty of hooks in the cabin for hanging things. There was also a kitchenette, which we did not use. We were surprised that the Lodge was beside a ski run which had outdoor lights on the afternoon; fortunately there were turned off about 6 pm, so they didn’t interfere with trying to view the night sky. If one’s goal was to see the Northern Lights from the outdoor hot tub at the Lodge, you had to hope they would be directly overhead. The view from the hot tub was very constrained by nearby trees. Fortunately we did see the Aurora overhead one evening (it was too cloudy the other two evenings during our stay). In hindsight, I’m not sure the Björnfjell is a great place for viewing the Northern Lights, unless you’re on top of the mountain with clear skies.

The staff at the Björnfjell Mountain Lodge was great. They were friendly and very helpful. We enjoyed the meals there, including the reindeer stew. It was great having choices on the dinner menu. Wines were reasonably priced.

My wife and I enjoyed a snowshoe hike with a local insider, lunch in a lavvo, and a bonfire dinner (but no stargazing because of the cloudy skies). We loved the Polar Night Bonfire which was indoors at the top of the mountain above the Lodge. It was fun cooking the food in the “fireplace”. The meal was delicious. We brought wine from the Lodge with us. Unfortunately we couldn’t take advantage of the telescope for stargazing, because it was cloudy outside.

I loved the Lodge's emphasis on sustainability. The uneaten food is consumed by the resident sheep, who can be visited. Check with the kitchen if you want to bring food.

Cozy atmosphere in the lobby and in the room, the wellness room is an experience in itself. Impeccable 3-course dinner. All in all, an inner tier. The staff is concerned with quality and experience. The chef presented the dishes and was professional.

We stayed here for two nights during our week long stay in Northern Norway and it was definitely one of the highlights! We arrived into Alta Airport and was picked up and taken to the Lodge which was about a 20 minute drive away. From the start we received excellent service, the staff were very friendly and attentive. There were very few guests staying at the lodge and we had booked one of the rooms off the main lodge. We were fortunate enough to have been offered a free upgrade to a private cabin. The views were lovely and peaceful looking at the snow covered mountains and trees. The private cabin was open plan and consisted of a kitchen area, lounge area, dining area and of course a bedroom and private bathroom with a hot shower. The rooms were very clean and modern with a Scandinavian twist.

The first night we did the Polar Night experience which was even more special as it was just the two of us that had book on. The guide was very polite and chatty, telling us stories of Northern Norway and the Northern Lights. We were taken to the top of the mountain on snow mobiles and was taken to a small cabin, where there was an open log fire which we later used to cook our dinner. We had some great views looking down at the city, unfortunately no northern lights due to the snow clouds, but we had a great time hearing about the Norwegian culture and taking in all of the nature. It was very cold but we were provided with snow suits and snow boots and was able to sit in the cabin as much as we wanted. We prepared our own meals from a selection of reindeer, cod and salmon with a variety of vegetables. These were then cooked to perfection on the open fire along with some coffee. It was a very relaxing and enjoyable night and lasted from about 8pm - midnight. We had a lot of fun getting back down the slope to the cabins - no spoilers! We did get very hot and sweaty so jumped in a nice hot shower before heading to bed!

In the morning we had a buffet breakfast and had a lot of choice of eggs, fish, meats and breads. We spent the afternoon mountain sledding and snow tubing. We were the only guests using the slopes that day but they opened the slops for us and prepared the snow so it was fresh and ready for us. It was very tiring but we had such a great time. This was my first experience of anything like this and I was a little anxious but I felt in safe hands with our guide.

Overall the service was excellent, the lodge was clean and tidy, all staff were polite and the food was delicious. It was very peaceful and remote and the activities were really fun! I highly recommend the Mountain Lodge for a true stay in the country and a real Norwegian experience.

We stayed in the main building's pet room and unfortunately its quality did NOT match the high price level or imagery painted in Lodge's marketing. We were told to use only the outdoor stairs that are not safe for dog paws, so we had to carry our pets up and down. The room itself was just small and basic without television or fridge/minibar and there were holes in our bedsheets when we arrived (see the photo I've posted).

Bjornfjell marketing has fancy photos of people enjoying the outdoor pool area. Reality seemed to be different, just a small backyard bush with beer cans thrown into nature (see the photo I've posted).

It's a shame - I would have liked to like this place more. The reality simply didn't match with their marketing. Maybe travellers with pets are second class customers and people staying in the cabins get better experiences?

Something went wrong with our hotel reservation in the city of Alta. That was our luck, because that's how we got to know the lodge. Even at the reception by the friendly staff you immediately feel welcome. The lodge is very nicely located, the decor tasteful and cozy. The food is wonderful, too. A place to feel good run by dear people.

My colleagues and I went to Bjørnfjell Mountain Lodge for a two days writing session. The place was really quiet and cosy. The food was exellent; local and well prepared. For example, we were served a delicious meal of high quality reindeer meet accompanied by, among other things, wild growing lingonberries.

The rooms were clean and the staff were superfriendly. I highly recomend a stay at Bjørnfjell Mountain Lodge.

Great location. Lovely cabin, cosy fireplace, good space and comfortable beds. Also has outdoor seating. Meals can be served in the restaurant or the cabin. We had ours in the cabin and it was so nice and relaxed for the family. Staff were very friendly and gave excellent service. We did sledging and had did the bonfire night experience. Both excellent. Was wishing we had skied too as the slope was right next to the cabin. Saw the northern lights. Cute sheep to feed and pet.

We were 7 adults who had ordered dinner on a Saturday night. And for a great experience! Nice host who welcomed us. We asked to get to sit in the lounge in the 2.etg before dinner, and it was no problem. Eventually we ate a beautiful decorated table, and got a tasteful and lovely dinner. 2 of us thought the meat was a little too little fried. It was taken m in the kitchen and easily corrected. We ate pure and lamb. Nice served and the tastes excellent. Dessert as well. Served with coffee and dessert wine for those who want it. Recommended!

Lovely room with an incredibly comfy bed, beautiful lounge area and stunning landscape, all just perfect! Friendly and informal service by Synnøve and her team made it feel like staying at someone’s house.

The polar night trip was great fun; the guys running this are really good company, so just like a good evening out with friends and the Northern Lights were a bonus! We were lucky enough to have a beautiful sunny morning the next day so took out the show shoes which was great fun.

Breakfast was a little busy and chaotic as only a small area so recommend getting there early if the lodge is busy.

A perfect example of combining cosy and comfortable with modern and classy. I’d come back in a heartbeat and stay for longer.
