Came with no expectations, but the hostel delivered good quality for money - and the view from Hovdetun was super. There was tennis courts and a nice outdoor pond to bath in with lots of opportunities for families. The breakfast was, even though it was way smaller than you get at a hotel, the best on our summer journey. Homemade scrambled eggs topped it - and possibilities to get exactly what you want at any time. The rooms though was a little bit disappointing. Lived in a small cabin, with limited possibilities for fresh air, and a bathroom that needed refurbishing. The receptionist when we came were polite and nice, and gave us a great end to our trip to Gjøvik!

My daughter and I visited this hostel on September 25th, 2014. This is a great hostel, and I highly recommend it. The manager, Steffen Csirmaz, went out of his way to ensure that our visit was rewarding. Thank you Mr. Csirmaz.

We stayed here in June 2013. Good: Nice matresses, clean rooms. They were accomodating enough to let us in at 1AM when we finally arrived. Bad: The rest, unfortunately. We were travelling as a couple and as such needed a double room. They had none with larger beds, but plenty with two beds. That's fine - it's a hostel, after all. We chose a room with bathroom. The problem is that we ended up paying the same price for this as we would in a hotel, with a tiny cot of a bathroom (with a hair in the shower - classic). To boot, breakfast service ended at 9 in the morning, an hour earlier than most hostels I've been at, and certainly far too early for 1AM arrivals. They didn't appear to have many guests, and the entire point of a hostel is to have a friendly atmosphere with helpful staff, so I don't think it would have been too much to ask for to have them hold off a bit on the breakfast. When we checked out the guy behind the counter didn't ask how was our stay, which I suppose fits with the rest of our experience there.

We arrived late evening having been recommended Gjøvik Vandrerhjem as a good place to stay. The room was basic and comfortable with bunks and an ensuite toilet/shower room which is what I had requested. There was a table, seating and adequate storage for all our suitcases. I was really surprised to see the lounge area with it's settees, chairs, tables and television. The weather was rather variable and so I spent quite a few hours in the lounge while my other half was out exploring. Breakfast was the usual Norwegian buffet served in a large dining area. Tea & coffee were available all day. A self-service laundry room and kitchen were available. If all hostels in Norway are like this one, I think I might start booking them.

With the name "hostel" attached to it, I was a bit suspicious of staying here....but I had a lovely cabin with comfortable mattrress and great heating as it is starting to get cold in Norway at night. Reception area personel were very helpful and kind and I would definitely stay here again if I am in Gjovik in the future. For those used to staying in 3 star hotels, make sure you stay in a cabin and not the hostel part.
