The Premier Inn Sunderland City Centre hotel generally receives compliments for its prime location near shops and theatres, with the central setting often praised by guests. While the hotel's atmosphere and cleanliness are frequently highlighted as positives, with particular mention of the comfortable rooms, there have been some concerns regarding cleaning standards post-Covid. Opinions on service vary, with reports of both friendly and unprofessional encounters. Although the value is considered good, issues such as parking fees and air conditioning have been points of contention for some visitors.

Excellent staff, food and drink and a very clean and comfortable room. I would recommend this hotel if you are going to stay in Sunderland as it is near the town centre and other amenities. I will be staying there again in the future. 10 out of 10

We chose to stay with seeing a show at the empire theatre. Less than 5 mins walk away, less than 10 mins to train/metro station.

We checked in around tea time, lovely lady on reception, mentioned restaurant and how to book (we ate out so wasn't req), gave directions to room
There's a station at front desk with extra tea bags etc and vending machines with snacks and soft drinks in

We were on 5th floor, lift available.
Our room overlooked part of car park and could see local football stadium. Room was quiet, we heard no noise from outside or inside hotel.

Room and facilities clean, tea/coffee provided. Hand wash and shampoo supplied.
Air con/heating was easy to use, temp very comfortable
Clean towels and extra pillows in room.
Hairdryer available - not most powerful so hair took longer to dry (very long) but handy to have than carrying own. Dressing table station with light up mirror
Shower was good, had shower curtain which was really clean!
Storage/hanging space available
TV with good selection of channels.
We paid the small charge for upgraded WiFi (think it said a better download speed or something) for a fiver and having an 11 year old it was worth it, we had no problems with it.

Breakfast was served up until 10.30am so no rush in morning.
A male and female on service, sorry didn't get names but both very friendly and welcoming.
My daughters first premier Inn stay and the lady showed her where to find everything and helped pick a table out with her.
Choice was brilliant! We had the unlimited breakfast option so included hot and continental options.
There were options advertises for Vegetarion/Vegan although we didn't require these
Server trays were smaller than you'd normally see which meant food was refreshed instead of lots sitting under a hot plate for ages
Dirty dishes were removed from table quickly
On check out the same lady who served us at breakfast was on the desk, chatted with my daughter about her stay etc. She is really looking forward to another visit!

We booked 1 adult with unlimited breakfast, child stayed and ate for free - midweek stay.
Great value for money and we will be back!

We had a weekend break away and didn't have any problems, the room was well presented both clean and comfortable. We encountered the cleaner on the Saturday who was very polite who couldn't do enough to ensure things were right. The rest of the staff were polite and friendly and would definitely recommend and return.

We stayed for one night as an extension to our family trip to the area. The original hotel where we had been staying in was full so booked the extra night at the Premier Inn.

Location was perfect – being downtown, lots of bars, restaurants, and shops in the vicinity.

Downside is parking charges. We parked at the hotel and was told it was independent to the hotel and would be £10 a night. We check in at 4pm and left at 10.30am the next morning and the charge on the machine was infact £12.

The room itself was standard Premier Inn. Only 1 pillow each on the bed and we needed extra pillows so went to reception as couldn't locate the usual extras in the room. Reception said they were in the room. Back to the room, no extra pillows, soo, back to front desk who said they would try to find some in an unoccupied room. An hour later, extra pillows were delivered. Perfect.

We also didn’t have extra towels in the room (only 1 bath/hand in the bathroom) but only staying one night, this wasn’t an issue.

Both pillows/towels are housekeeping issues, but on the plus side, the room was spotless, no issues.

We didn’t eat or drink in the hotel as location is central so walked to a local restaurant for dinner and after dinner drinks in a local old pub, The Dunn Cow, brilliant decor!

Overall a comfortable night stay, just let down by a few housekeeping issues and high car parking prices.

he bed is too low for getting up and down with crutches and/or sticks a nd for transferring from and back to a wheelchair. Beds in non accessible rooms are much higher. I have complained about this before and happy to meet with any one in authority and discuss and demonstrate. The soap dispenser for the bath is high up at the shower end which is suitable for someone who can satnd underneath the shower. There should be a soap dispenser at the opposite end of the shower for a disabled person sitting in the bath. As a blue badge holder I was pleased to see 6 or 7 blue badge parking spaces but I could NOT park in them as ALL of the disabled blue badge bays were occupied with vehicles NOT displaying a blue badge. This is exteremly selfish and caused me a greta deal of hardship.

We stay in Premier Inns all the time and we have stayed in this one before. Zoe and Ryan are absolutely the best advert for customer service! We were a family of 8 with a wheelchair and they looked after us all so well. Nothing was too much effort.
Car parking is a small issue - the disabled parking is at the back of the hotel and there is absolutely no signs anywhere stating you have to pay! We nearly got caught out by this but luckily Zoe saved the day. We parked in the Bridges car park 5 mins walk away and this was so much cheaper than the hotel car park (the hotel subsidise the Bridges car park - with two cars we saved £20 over 3 days parking in the Bridges rather than the hotel car park!)

Rooms were lovely. Premier have done well in making the necessary changes and signage in relation to Covid19.
We arrived late friday and welcomed by the night staff at reception. Our 2 rooms, for 3 teenagers and 2 adults were next to each other and very clean.
Breakfast Saturday was lovely with care taken by staff to ensure there were not too many people in the restaurant at any given time.
Table staff were very friendly and helpful and the food was served hot and promptly.

Sunday morning we had an 8.30 slot for breakfast.Unfortunately the service was not as good as Saturday.
I'm not sure if it was due to staffing issues or poor organisation, but a number of customers waited a long time for their food. A family of 3 near us waited over an hour only to be informed their food was given to someone else.
The waitress didnt apologise and just said the chef is doing their breakfast next, it still took a long time to arrive and other guests who came after them were served.

We tried to get the waitresses attention for breakfast items that were forgotten and waited a while. In the end 2 of the children coukdnt wait anymore and went back to the room.
I would stay at City Premier again as this may have been a one off. We have stayed here before and everything was fine.

Due to covid 19 and lockdown in the area I was unable to stay. I was unable to get a refund and my call was cut short in order to rebook.
I would like to carry my reservation forward for a future date or be reimbursed my fee

The Premier Inn is a new build and so all facilities are in good condition. It is situated in the centre of Sunderland. It is close to a covered multi-story car park which is about 5 mins walk away which isn't too inconvenient if the small hotel car park is full.

We feel sad to have to write this review as this hotel has been a regular stay for us when we visit family in Sunderland.
This time over Christmas we noticed it was totally different.
We checked on Christmas day for 5 nights, everything was as is always expected and check in speedy and the 2 children’s beds made up.
However, after a couple of nights we requested a room clean… new towels etc… we were told this could NOT be done as they will only clean rooms after 5 days!! Apparently company policy now. So we didn’t get our room cleaned once in 5 days and had to beg for some new towels…
Very disappointed… it would actually benefit anyone wishing to stay for a number of days to book each night separately and change rooms?..
Other than that, as usual the great breakfast and all the other things you would expect.

From the front of the hotel you can see The Empire Theatre just across the main road. I don't think there's anywhere nearer ! The theatre's dome is lit up at night with changing colours and it looks lovely. There is a large paved area in front of the hotel, with benches and seating, so I sat there for a while every night, just to look at The Empire.
