Mature trees and a 40-acre estate surround Crutherland House and Spa near East Kilbride. Originally built in the early 18th century, this manor house hotel is a peaceful haven despite being less than 30 minutes from the centre of Glasgow. As well as enjoying the grounds and unspoiled countryside close to the hotel, guests can relax in the spa and settle into the comfort and country house charm of the Cocktail Bar and Lounge.

The Macdonald Crutherland House and Spa offers a scenic location near shops, which guests frequently appreciate. While the hotel's cleanliness generally meets standards, some areas have room for improvement. Reviews suggest a mixed bag when it comes to amenities, with the spa receiving both praise and criticism. Travelers often describe the rooms as outdated, echoing sentiments about the hotel's overall atmosphere. Service quality appears to vary, with experiences of both attentiveness and neglect. Additionally, numerous guests question the value, citing overpriced services and unexpected charges.

The reception was welcoming although not much was explained about what amenities were open. Covid restrictions meant the gym, pool and spa were closed and rooms were not attended during our stay. We had to ask reception for fresh towels and tea and coffee but the most disappointing was the dinner menu choice. The 5 dishes on offer came with no vegetables , nor were they available as an optional side. The social distancing was well observed in the dining room and many tables had been removed which gave the room a less than welcoming appearance. It appeared that many staff had been laid off and some appeared to be in a dual role. Breakfast can be ordered from a room service menu and is served at your room on a tray. We declined to use this service. The hotel is in a rural location set in expansive and well tended grounds with ample car parking. The room was well presented and in good condition however the pressure from the shower was almost non existent and we had to use the narrow bath.
Overall and notwithstanding the Covid restrictions, The stay was satisfactory but for the limited dinner menu. In East Kilbride there are several restaurants however some are not fully open yet and if you wish to use them then book in advance.

I stayed at Crutherland House for a couple of days in late July. I must say that the staff are coping admirably with all of the COVID 19 restrictions in place. The restaurant, swimming pool and gym area are currently closed and I would highly recommend telephoning before you visit to find out what facilities are available, obviously things will change over the coming weeks. Breakfast is a limited offering delivered to your room at a time of your choice. The hotel do let you order food in while the restaurant is closed. The Spa had just opened during my stay, offering various beauty treatments. The hotel had kindly upgraded my room from a standard double room to a king size room. The room was spacious, although a little dated, however the bed was very comfortable and I slept very well during my stay. The staff at Crutherland House, especially Karyn and Vicky, are amazing, nothing was too much trouble, the few issues I had were dealt with very quickly and efficiently. Overall I had a very enjoyable and comfortable stay and although some of the facilities were not available this was reflected by the current discounted rates. I will definitely return and hope to be able to use the lovely swimming pool next time.

We have just returned from this hotel after 4 nights with my partner and our 8 year old Son.
The receptionist welcomed us. It was a grand entrance steeped in history. Lovely grounds and clean.
Our room was about worn (wallpaper coming off)
We used the pool. Staff very welcoming and friendly. The pool roof needs a fresh lick of paint and abit dated.
I booked a hot stone massage weeks before our stay. When waiting to be booked in on the day, the therapist said she did not have the facilities for a hot stone massage. I was very disappointed to hear this as I have been looking forward to this for months. The therapist presented in a non chalont way, not very responsive and did not ask any appropriate questions pre massage/facial such as medication/allergy issues. All I needed to fill in was a Covid questionnaire.
Plenty of hand sanitizer and all staff wore face coverings, even the swimming instructor in the pool.
I have to say my facial and massage was worth the wait. Robyn delivered a worthy treatment.
The dining experience was infact an experience!
Very courteous waiting staff apart from the male waiters. They appeared very rushed and lacked interest in the customers wants and needs. What a shame.
Our breakfast experience will never be forgotten! We waited 50 minutes after ordering 3 Scottish breakfasts. The waiter lost our order and all the waiting staff never approached our table. It was if we were insignificant. Such a shame again that the staff lack common sense and we were left unnoticed:(
The housekeeping staff were the most efficient. Very approachable, friendly and sincere. Well done housekeeping.
All I can say is for a 4 star hotel it lacked so much in terms of customer satisfaction. The management could learn so much from the customer feedback. I hope you can understand our frustrations with the above comments that need attending to.

We arrived about 4 o'clock on Friday but as a wedding was on the hotel was very busy and loud. Check in was fast and we went for a 25 mins spa treatment. The treatment was shorter. Furthermore, due to Covid-19 announcements on Friday the government advising restaurants etc to shut we couldn't use it. I was then told by spa staff that the spa would shut therefore we couldn't use the pool facilities etc. Later on, I was told that the gym facilities would actually remain open that night and tomorrow however, we didn't feel comfortable using this regarding government advise. The hotel receptionist was lovely and kept us well informed and adivsed us that it would be safer to order breakfast to the room in the morning rather than use the restaurant. We did this and then when we were leaving we were charged £5 for room service charge. We didn't really agree with this due to the circumstance and advise given from the hotel staff but paid it anyways. We heard lots of noise throughout the night as the hotel was busy with loud guests. Overall, a disappointing stay for the money paid. I appreciate the staff might have been under more stress with the coronavirus updates etc however, having paid all of the money and not being able to use the spa facilities, dining facilities and having to pay for room service charge in a situation like that - didn't think it was the best touch.

Excellent, we paid £116 for Dinner bed and breakfast with a large standard family room with 2 double beds.

The room was a great size and everything was clean and comfortable, I liked the traditional country style decor and the dinning room was exceptionally well decorated in a modern grey tartan style.

The food was excellent, maybe the breakfast could have done with a fruit bowl, but other than that the choice and quality was great.

The staff were very friendly and professional and we wished we could have stayed for longer.

Excellent hotel and we will return.

We came for an over night stay a couple of weeks ago (27.08.22) for my husbands birthday. It was my husband, 2 x daughters aged 4 & 6 and myself.
We stayed in room 119.

We booked the stay through bookings.com for dinner, bed & breakfast. At no point whilst booked was there any mention of the children not being included in the dinner allocation and there being a £25 limit per person for my husband and myself.

On arrival at reception we were informed re this.

We then attended our room and on attending the room it was very run down.

I pushed the 2 x single beds together and underneath one of the beds was disgusting, there was rubbish, bits of rice and dust everywhere. The skirting behind the bed was absolutely filthy. The window ledges were covered in crumbs and the windows wouldn't properly close (which in all honesty was fine because the room was absolutely roasting and that was with no heating on).

Then moving onto the bathroom, the ceiling and wall was covered in mould and when I started the shower the water was pouring out of the shower screen filling the bathroom with water.

We phoned reception re this and they said they would send someone up. Due to this my husband held off having a shower and I didn't dry my hair immediately so we didn't miss someone coming to the door. Eventually I had to give in and dry my hair due to a dinner booking at 1900 so my husband had to stand by the door incase anyone came up.

We went down to dinner at 1900 and my husband spoke to reception re the mess of the room and the shower, they again said they would send someone up.

When we returned to our room they had been in and cleaned the water in the bathroom (with our towels which we could have done) nothing was done to fix the problem. They hoovered the carpet however the window ledge and skirting was still covered in rubbish / dust.

We didn't realise that the staff had used our towels to clean the water in the bathroom so the next morning when we went to have a shower we had to phone reception to get more towels which the brought up straight away. Again after showering the bathroom was filled with water.

What I will say is your staff are very helpful and friendly. The food was delicious however what should have been a nice night away for my husbands birthday turned out to be a disappointing stay. I feel incredibly upset that I paid the money to treat my husband and he was as frustrated as me re the state of the room.

We visited the hotel with my sister for her 40th birthday to have a nice overnight stay. Upon arrival I was given the wrong room key to decorate for her by reception... not ideal.. had to quickly change it before she came. The reception gave no rules r.e 1 way system, covid, nothing compared to other places. We didn't know how the hotel were operating or anything I was pretty much left to get on with it.
Room was Nice quite dated in terms of decor but the bed was fab so made up for it.
We had lunch in reception menu was not great but it was fine and sandwiches lovely.
Evening meal was lovely but the staff really let it down. There was maybe 3 or 4 people working we kept asking for things. Drinks, what ice cream they had took 10mins, kids menu, given it was my sisters 40th I was actually embarrassed at how poor service was. We gave up waiting for a desert menu and we just left the table in the end. The staff looked stressed, harassed, moody and really not like they wanted to work. I know its hard just now for all but the customers paying over £25 per head should be given better service i feel.
Really not impressed at all.
We went swimming twice. Pool was freezing. Again I understand but it was so cold. The 2nd booking for swimming wasn't even made luckily the girl found us a space.
I stayed in another macdonald about a month ago and the comparison was absolutely crazy. I think a lot needs done to make people's stays enjoyable and the staff need some training on how to give better service.
I sadly wouldn't return and my poor sisters birthday was a big let down.

My sister treated me to an overnight spa stay. The twin room had a kingsize, single and fold away single bed in the room. The matress was uncomfortable and you could feel the springs. As a whole the room was old and very worn. The bathroom ceiling had beige stains all over it. Went to the cocktail bar and the background music was elevator music. We ordered a porn star martini and had to wait on the person who makes them to come in from a smoke break. The porn star martinis had a lone raspberry floating on top instead of a half of passion fruit. Dinner in the restaurant was tasty and we didn't wait too long for it but on ordering wine it came at the end of the meal after I chased it up.
Breakfast was awful as the fried eggs were like rubber, the black pudding was wet and the sausages were full of lumpy fat.
The swimming pool was misty, the shower area had a stain which resembled body fluids. My masseuse never told me what oils she was using but the masseuse my sister got informed her of this.

Booked a delux room for one night and felt no different from standard room from the other Macdonald Hotels stayed in previously. The room was small and stuffy as very warm with no air conditioning/ ventilation. The bed mattress springs were felt through as poor quality mattress therefore lack of sleep. No bottled water left in the room. Extractor fan in bathroom didnt work. No upgrade of toiletries compared to standard room as mentioned when first booking.

Dining experience no ambience as very quiet felt uncomfortable. Food ordered in the evening was given frozen chips not fresh produce and over priced menu. Breakfast cold even though had to book a slot to arrive for breakfast which was unappetising as we look forward to a good breakfast (toast cold - awful).

Bar not open which was very disppointing so unable to have evening drinks only in the restaurant with meal. Felt should have been informed prior to arrival the bar is only open on Friday and Saturday.

Positive that all staff were very polite and friendlly and couldnt fault the customer service received.

The pool and spa area was clean and very good leisure facilities.

Car parking good and plenty of parking spaces.

Check in and out was fast and efficient.

Overall disappointed as has been about 18 months since been on a hotel break due to the pandemic and was looking forward to a good hotel with facilities.

The hotel is very nice but not yet fully open, the restaurant menu was limited so we didn't bother and the breakfast was not worth it to be honest - it is delivered to your room but how you can burn eggs 2 days in a row is beyond me. That said the hotel and grounds are very nice as are the staff and this would not deter us from visiting again, go to booking.com and check the rate before you book direct as we got it £45 cheaper via booking.com
