Having travelled widely all over the UK with our dog we are always careful to ensure that the hotel is pet friendly. On the main Mecure website the St Helens hotel is unequivocally described as being pet friendly. On this basis we booked for a 3 night stay, on-line, and paid our bill upfront. After a long drive we arrived at the hotel in the late evening to be met by two confrontational members of staff who said they do not accept pets. Further, that we could stay overnight but would have to leave first thing in the morning. The following morning we spoke to the hotel General Manager and showed him the live Mecure website showing the St Helens hotel displaying as being pet friendly and with rooms available to book. We pointed out that we booked the room in good faith, paid upfront and as such we wanted to enforce the contract for supply of services as advertised. He was not impressed. He said he would need to investigate the issue and would get back to us with a ‘decision’ in the afternoon. He not anyone else in the hotel got back to us. So we simply stayed for the 3 nights booked. Given that Mecure is large hotel chain I am disappointed in the extreme as to the way we were treated on arrival compounded by the fact the General Manager did not have the courtesy to speak to us following his investigations. Mecure staff have no idea of customer service or indeed basic contract law. We have received no update or indeed and apology from Mecure for their behaviour. We will put it down to experience and will not be using any of the lot hotels again.

We have just held my daughter’s wedding at the hotel and we cannot praise the venue and staff enough. The initial planning was organised by Vicky and she was extremely attentive, responded to emails promptly and accommodated all our requests. We then worked with Julia to finalise the organisation for the day and again nothing was too much trouble for her. Both the ceremony and the wedding breakfast were held in the hotel, the venue looked beautiful and was spotlessly clean. The food was excellent as was the service. All our guests commented on how lovely the venue was and the quality of the food. A number of guests stayed overnight and were happy with the accommodation. Thank you to all the staff who helped to make the day special for the bride and groom, in particular Vicky and Julia. I am delighted we chose to hold the wedding at the Mecure Hotel and cannot praise it enough.

Ok, review of the room? Great, it’s been refurbed since we last stayed, a bit more modern. Bed a bit soft but comfortable nonetheless, the shower leaked on the floor but otherwise it’s ok. The supplies of teas/coffees in the room could be more generous given the rooms aren’t refreshed due to covid. Covid things? Hotel provided plenty sanitisers etc, just that some customers were oblivious to how stupid their belligerence is and didn’t wear masks, which wasn’t challenged by the hotel staff. Here’s the big However, we were asked to leave late the first evening because we had a dog. We didn’t check in with him as we went straight out to see family with the dog. The reception worker said we had to leave in the morning and fetched the duty manager who was also as blunt. I was angry so let my husband go down to show him how we booked. The duty manager suggested we move to a hotel that was only £10 a night that we would be more suited too! How rude! I booked the hotel. I could not have been more certain that the Mercure St Helens was Pet Friendly. Look at the screen shots. I searched ‘Is Mercure St Helens pet friendly?’ and the Mercure page opened ‘Bring Your Fur Baby’ with a search tool to find a pet friendly hotel. Both the Haydock and St Helens Mercure Hotels came up as Pet Friendly. I also checked some other results and the Expedia page confirmed that same result. I was certain booking online was ok to do. The following morning, we were met getting out the lift by the general manager, who reiterated that they don’t accept pets. We politely challenged him to show us where during the booking process, that I missed something to say Pets were not allowed. He didn’t come back to us at all. My husband told the manager that we have a contract to stay and we were going to enforce that by staying in our room. Every time we left the hotel with our dog we were uncertain as to being able to access our room on our return, if we’d find our bags at reception and we’d be left searching for alternative accommodation. This made for an uncomfortable atmosphere. We didn’t sleep well. Our dog is 15, quite blind and can’t hear too well. We only left him alone to eat breakfast and he caused no damage to the room, you could barely tell a dog had been in it. The Mercure Website has faults, allowing concessionary hotels, which the St Helens hotel is, that don’t allow pets to show as being pet friendly. Information held about this hotel on 3rd party sites such as Expedia are also out of date. I’m pleased the hotel general manager let us stay. They got our money after all.

Room Tip: The Mercure Website is incorrect about allowing pets in their hotels, best call and check.

No real issues with stay. Rooms(comfortable beds!) and staff both excellent. Restricted times for using the spa facilities it that is just a sign of the times and probably out with the hotels hands. Walking distance to main town with plenty of restaurants and amenities. If I’m the area again will use without hesitation.

The hotel's....okay. the rooms are nice enough, the bathroom was clean. Tv and entertainment package is basic. The pool was always full with swimming lessons so lots of kids about but the gym is a good size. The rooms have frosted windows allowing little sunlight through and making it seem a bit gloomy! Food was average. Hotel staff were very nice and attentive!
