Since the new owner took over things have improved from drink selection, food availability times and variation. The work done to the outside area, at the back of the pub is a credit to the new owners. Can’t say the same about the eyesore at the front entrance. My main complaint about this place is the prices they charge. It’s got to be one of the most expensive pubs to eat and drink at in St Helens. The beer selection is very good but £5+ for a premium pt of lager. I’ve suggested to the owner he does a “doubles bar” but that hasn’t materialised so a large G&T with tonic is around a tenner !!!! But the one that took the biscuit for me was a pt of tap water with lime cordial which was £1.95 !!!!! That for a shot of lime is absolutely ridiculous by anyones standards.
I hope the place does well as the owners deserve it to with the investment they have made in the place but please, think about your punters and take a look at some of your prices and bring in a doubles bar ! You’d still make a killing if you charged £6 for a double standard gin with a free tonic as they do in other neighbouring pubs. Locals would frequent then more often.

Good luck

Room Tip: Car parking isn’t easy when it’s busy. Outside area at the back of the pub is amazing

Firstly I’d like to say ‘Will’ is an asset to this company. He’s so friendly and happy to help. Always straight to it with a smile.

In regards to my stay, the room was spot-on for what I needed. I needed a comfy bed, a clean room, a place to make a cup of tea and a bathroom with a nice shower and that’s exactly what I got.

Don’t get me wrong there are things that can be updated – for example, the floor creeks in room eight quite a lot but it doesn’t really bother me and the overall look could be updated but that doesn’t stop me staying here or having a pleasant time. I will say my only bugbear was that there was no plug right next to the bed and there was no breakfast but again it didn’t bother me too much.

I went downstairs for food both evenings and it was amazing. I highly recommend the lamb rump steak and the fish and chips. The service is quick, and friendly and even in busy times when they look rushed off their feet they always checked in to make sure we were okay or if we needed anything else.

I don’t really understand the other reviews that are incredibly negative regarding this place but each person has their own opinion. The staff were friendly, the room was a nice quiet place for me to rest my head and I felt safe.

I was in room eight at the end of the building and there was a football match on on my second night and after 10 pm I couldn’t hear a single thing. The only noises I ever did hear were people using the toilet in another room or talking really loudly but again that wasn’t that often and it didn’t bother me.

If you’re going for a luxury hotel this isn’t for you but if you’re going for friendly, quiet, comfortable and simple that is the perfect stop.

I’d quite happily go back again and stay overnight again. And I’m a female on my own for work.

Thanks Griffin Inn - you are great!!

It can be a tough challenge to find a decent pub or restaurant in St Helens, however this place has nailed it following a huge renovation over the past few years. The venue is stunning, high end decor inside the bar and restaurant, and amazing heated booths and heated al fresco dining.
The hospitality my family received during several Christmas visits was first class, a beautiful atmosphere, and slick service. The New Year's Eve menu, a seven course set menu was some of the finest food I have ever eaten, a real fine dining experience. If you enjoy quality food with a brilliant atmosphere then this has to be your first choice. Well done ro the team, you were amazing last night!

Myself and husband also his brother, cousin and family of 4 our friends stop here on Friday 5th August. We had this booked for months as we were attending a family wedding for the full weekend. On arrival we went to check in to be told we had only booked for 3 rooms which we had booked 4 rooms. When we explained we had phoned to add a extra room months ago and the payment had gone out of our account. We were told by the member of staff the person who had taken our booking manager "oh she dose this sort of stuff all the time ".
We then had to pay again to book the room for Friday and pay for it again but they didn't have a room for us to stay in on the Saturday as they were fully booked there was no help to get our money back or trace the complaint or help us book a room anywhere else or say sorry. Oh and also we had booked a large table for the evening 9 ppl altogether and that had also not been booked but they managed to squeeze us in for dinner food was nice but some of the staff serving us were not trained in what they were serving as they didn't know the difference between the two pizzas they had in there hands or the drinks they played on our table they brought over another table starters to our table when we were waiting for our puddings. Friday nights are live music nights so if you are stopping on Fridays please beware of this because the rooms are directly above the bar I live above a pub so I always have pods playing in when I sleep but even I was not expecting 4am screaming match from someone trying to get in to there room. Saturday morning of the wedding no breakfast service so you know before you book. Arrival of the management we introduce ourselves and the issues which had not been passed on we were given our refund , apparently the system had put our booking in wrong ....... but we still needed an extra room so after searching for hours we booked a travel lodge at Haydock . This was not ideal as one of the guests with us ñeeds additional support so alot of anxiety on this day and night as we try and deal with the arrangements of how we get to and from places. My main issues are if you have guests staying with treat them a little better if you made thire stay difficult try and offer them some help offer them compensation. Your staff need training better how to deal with customer interaction.

Placed in a nice location with good transport roads. Room was reasonable but no power sockets near bedside resulting cables draped on the floor. The thing that really lets this place down is the food. There is no option for breakfast and the dinner/evening menu is very limited and the quality of food is poor at best. The cost is not over the top but isn't budget either. Cannot recommend unless its location is important to you.

My husband and I visited the Griffin this afternoon with our two young children (2 and 7) along with some friends and their 3 year old. After ordering at the bar as the app wasn’t working we were kept waiting for over 1hour and 15mins for food, our friends used the app and their food came straight away, along with many other tables around us. We asked multiple times but no one seemed to know where it was.

Our friend went in to speak to the manager who told him that our food would not have arrived together because we ordered separately. He reiterated that this was not the issue and that the problem was the length of time we were waiting, we had a 2 year old with us who had had no lunch yet and had no offer of anything to put him on while we waited. He was then told that the order must have been forgotten as there were two orders for the table so they thought everything had arrived.

Nothing was given in the form of compensation, not even a free ice cream for the children. We did not ask for anything but not even the manager to come to the table and apologise has left us with a bad feeling about the place and we will not be returning after we feel they had ample opportunity to resolve the situation.

We gave them another opportunity on leaving to resolve the situation in a more satisfactory manner, we explained again that we understand mistakes happen but it was the way it was dealt with, as in no compensation offered, that we were most surprised at. We were told the manager was not available at the time and we would need to wait but we had to leave as we had the young ones with us. Still no form of compensation was offered and I have felt compelled to write this review as we did not feel satisfied with the service and unfortunately we will not be returning.

We ordered lamb and paid extra for side of chips .
Food came with the side order on the plate as the couscous had run out that came with it .
It was dry and very little on the plate . They only refunded half the cost of the chips .
Ordered desert Eaton Mess . It came and looked awful . There was a pink cream in a wine glass with strawberry on top . It didn’t taste nice or look nice .
Got home and within one hour I had vomited the desert back twice . I was really ill all night and most of following day and had terrible headache . Tried to phone and no answer . Tried to contact them in website and facility . Food cost £62 . Dreadful

We were allocated our table, drinks order taken, then waited for a good 45 minutes for our order to be taken, then 30 minutes for the food to be served.
The beer battered fish was pale soggy and undercooked on the outside, but the fish itself was hot ?! We had observed other peoples going out and the batter was golden and crispy. Maybe as we were one of the last to be served around 10pm the chef couldn’t be bothered 🤷‍♀️
My husband has an anxiety condition and was panicking that I was going to say something, and the fact that the rest of our party were starving and supposed to be meeting friends, I didn’t complain.
My sons sirloin was tough too and was not worth the money.
It was very busy considering it only just opening after lockdown and the staff didn’t stop, so maybe don’t book as many tables then people won’t have to wait so long and their food would be cooked properly.
I wasn’t going to say anything but the people who had fish have all today complained of feeling sick through the night

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

Do not book with this hotel, I had a room booked through booking.com and messaged the hotel I was arriving later in the evening this was completely ignored, when I arrived at the hotel there was no staff on site and after trying to call them and receiving no answer I had to go and stay at my parents house. I was lucky I was booking to come see family and not to a city I didn’t know anyone or would have been sleeping in the car with my partner!

I then politely messaged the hotel for a refund which was again ignored and then messaged booking.com for them to contact the hotel for a refund which they ignored booking.com as well

As I couldn’t put up the pictures from the hotel I have added screenshots of the ignored messages insted

Lovely lunch experience at this well established pub/restaurant. We last ate here before lock down and to be honest we were not too impressed.
What a difference.
Very tasty food and served beautifully.
We didn't have to wait long for our food to be served and it came hot and altogether.
We ordered different foods and we were impressed by each others and could have eaten any one of the dishes. My husband was very keen on his pork and leek sausage (best he'd had in a long time) Lots of prawns in prawn cocktail. could go on and on
