OMH is for the birders, by the birders, and hope it stays that way. The key attraction here is their "studio" , which is a set of bird baths with well positioned perches. These attract various birds , and provide good clean perches with clean BG for Western Ghats species that would normally be very difficult to track on the...

Old Magazine House (OMH) is a place mainly for birding. It has a hide and a setting with bird baths and perches. Bird activity starts early in the morning and goes on till it gets dark. It is like a drama of nature and must be experienced. There are usually many photographers who set up their tripods very early. During...

What can I say about this place??? Excellent birding opportunities with complete luxury.. Just sit and relax, birds will come one by one, click ,return back with pics and wonderful memories. Relish excellent varieties of finger licking good food(veg and non veg), all for just a meagre amount of money.. Dorm is absolutely good, clean.. Right amidst the thick evergreen...

There is no better place than this for birds in Dandeli. Seriously out of 40 birds I clicked during two days, 25 types of birds I saw in Old Magazine house. Property is clean and for nature lovers it's a must stay in Dandeli.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
A place to just be. Catch your breath. Learn more about nature and get away from the mad rush. The Old magazine brings to mind rustic, old-world, classic roughing it. And it's exactly that. The camp is surrounded by thick forest and you can be sure of spotting the jungle's rare and vibrant avian denizens. The Old Magazine House is less about what you can see and more about what you can do. And there's a lot of the latte ... more   less

Bengaluru, India

Dear staff and guests with experience@OMH,

Thanks for your reviews and information on the facility and its features. We are a family of 4 (kids ages 10 and 6) and would very much appreciate some pointers. Here are the specific set of initial questions:

1. Would last week in March be a good time for bird spotting ? Understand it may be the end of migratory season but just wanted to confirm that the resident variety would be rich and abundant enough to keep amateur urban birders interested. E,g Black-naped monarch, Malabar Trogan etc. Also Is 2016 March being unusually hot/dry ?

2. Would the facility offer pickup and drop-off from Hubbali railway station ? Can vehicles also be provided for local day-trips like supa caves, dam and dandeli safari. Extra cost is understandable and a rough estimate for these would be great if it can be furnished.

3. Would rafting be available at this time of the year ? Are there gentler options available for a family with kids (ie not whitewater) ?

4. Would the safari within Dandeli park be worth it at this time of the year for animal spotting ? Also would it be generally personal enough unlike other popular destinations like Mudumalai or Bandipur where 25+ open canters go en-mass into the forest, making it more of a loud spectacle/excursion and driving away any possibility of spotting anything ?

5. Any other tips, especially to keep small kids engaged besides birding, so their restlessness and potential disturbance to others in the property, is minimized ?

Thank you very much in advance.
