This has been a hostel which has been teasing me for a while. I'd originally booked a solo trip in November 2020 and the second lockdown cancelled that. A second attempt late in 2021 but an incoming storm cancelled that trip. So I finally managed a visit with my wife and daughter on the Sunday of the February half term and it was worth the wait!

Parking was easy after our visit to Whitby. We arrived just before five and in time for check in. We received a really friendly welcome and promptly given our room keys.

We stopped in the new crows nest annex in one of the ensuite rooms. The room was clean and just what we needed.

After a change into some dry clothes we made our way down to the main building where we ordered drinks and our evening meal. Good choice on the menu but as I've noticed with the other yha's the kids menu has seemed to have disappeared. With having a 6 year old it would be helpful if this returns. The main room was full but they opened up the brigg for us and this soon filled as well.

The hostel itself has a fantastic location snuggled into the cliffs on the Cleveland way with great views out onto the the coast. The rooms are well decorated and on our morning of departure and the hostel being quiet it was fun to explore and find the boggles, bananas, fish and mice (although the vampire did spook her a little).

All in all lovely short stopover and I hope to return with my daughter in sunnier weather to explore the beach and find the rest of those boggles!!

Had a lovely winter weekend break at this hostel. The hostel is very quirky and has lots of attention to detail with lots of things to look at.
The self catering kitchen is modern, clean and well equipped.
The log fire was on for our while visit which added to the lovely feel of the place.
The beds are very comfortable and despite it being winter the bedroom was just the right temperature.
There's lots of books for adults and children to read both in our room and in the bookcases.
The location is down a steep hill with no car access so it's not good for people who would struggle to walk with cases, but otherwise it's straight onto the beach. Not a long walk into Robin Hood's Bay so it's ideally located.
Would highly recommend

I have wanted to stay at this youth hostel since I was a teenager and first joined the YHA. Two decades later, I have finally visited and it didn’t disappoint!

I stayed with my two children, age 5 and 8, and my mother, in her late seventies. We all loved it. The location is stunning. The hostel has great facilities and has been decorated and styled with care and a sense of humour. The staff were cheerful and helpful.

The food is simple, but well done and good value. Due to COVID, some of the hostel was closed - the self catering kitchen; dining room etc. We were able to buy dinner there (served between 6pm and 8pm, IIRC). We were also able to buy breakfast (breakfast baps, meat and vegetarian options available). Breakfast options were a bit limited, but we were only there for two nights, so it wasn’t an issue. In the end, I didn’t miss not having to cook! We were given the option to book the evening meal and breakfast when we checked in. During the day, the hostel has a cafe, open to the public, which also gives a lunch option.

We stayed in the main building and had a room with a fantastic view of the beach. There was a small seating area just outside the room (we noticed a few dotted through the building). This was a real treat, as it meant we could put the kids to bed, then the adults could sit just outside the room and enjoy the rest of the evening.

The lane down to the hostel is steep, but it is tarmaced, so wheeled luggage and prams can go up and down OK - though pushing uphill would take some strength. There are some steps at the bottom, where there is a bridge crossing the stream, to get to the hostel.

Check in was at 5pm, but unfortunately, bags cannot be dropped off earlier. We ended up having to make several trips back and forwards to the car, as we arrived at lunch time. It was fine, but I can imagine with young kids and bad weather it would have been a bit of a palaver.

The car park at the top of the lane is free, although there is a donation box. It was quite busy when we visited Thurs to Sat in July, but we found space OK.

We stayed in the main building and had a room with a fantastic view of the beach. There was a small seating area just outside the room (we noticed a few dotted through the building). This was a real treat, as it meant we could put the kids to bed, then the adults could sit just outside the room and enjoy the rest of the evening.

We enjoyed the beach and rock pools during the day. There are some (cold!) showers and two changing rooms outside at the hostel. Also some toilets open during the day. This made it easy to hang out on the beach during the day. It’s a pleasant walk to Robins Hood Bay too - about twenty minutes walk with the kids over the cliff top route.

There is a free drinking water refill tap by the entrance next to the cafe.

There were two things we didn't realise about this accommodation, but it was our fault for not reading enough before going away, as i'm sure it's in the information. Firstly, it is a downhill walk of a quarter of a mile to the Boggle Hole YHA from the car park, but at least we had a good torch . We were prepared with food for 2 days for 4 greedy pigs, so it was a long walk with all our bags , cool boxes plus luggage. Included in our foodstuffs were a few bottles of nice wine to help celebrate a special birthday. We weren't allowed to drink it as the hostel is licenced, which we hadn't realised. Their wine was very drinkable and not too pricey (£12 for the Chardonnay), so it could have been worse, but our cool boxes would have been lighter if we'd realised. Otherwise, amazing location, clean facilities, pretty comfortable rooms and shared areas with a lovely fire. An easy walk along the beach to Robin Hood's Bay, and an easy bus ride then to Whitby. We will try to book again but I hope to be fitter by then (ya...sure!!)

We only spent £35 each to stay in a really clean private room with space for five people. Be warned the free and large car park is a 500 metre walk down a steep road but if you're reasonably fit it's not an issue. Check in was friendly (you do need photo ID) and you get a full safety talk. The bar area is quirky but chilled with plenty of reasonbly priced beer options. Our room including bedding and a duvet was a shared bathroom option but there was two loos and showers with plenty of high pressure hot water. The staff here are really helpful and I can't speak highly enough of them. There was two school parties there when we were but the staff made sure that we in a different and quiet area. YHA breakfasts are great value for money at a tenner so we indulged both mornings we were there. We also had an evening veggie meal of pie, mash and pies which was well cooked and again great value for money. For the self catering folk there is a well appointed but small kitchen. The famous Boggle Hole is a two minute walk away and Robin Hood's Bay is a mile away along the beach. The Cleveland Walk is just above the YHA. We enjoyed our value for money stay and can't recommend this YHA enough.

This is the second time we’ve stayed here. Previously we stayed in the new ‘Crows Nest’ block and this time we were in the main building. It’s older and the facilities aren’t all brand spanking new, but as in any YHA hostel, the showers and toilets are clean, most are recently decorated and there are enough to be shared amongst the facilities. We love the old block - so many little bits and pieces to look at and read, so much character and thick walls between bedrooms. It’s perfect for a range of visitors; just beware that if you don’t like walking up stairs or hills, this may not be the place for you because the whole site is on a hill.
Check in was easy and quick. The staff are the most welcoming, friendly faces and no matter what time of day or what interaction, they are always kind, attentive and there to help. My children are 2 and 5, and they loved the space, the freedom to run and play with other children, chat to other residents and just enjoy the time. No other kind of accommodation seems to work with everyone from people with young babies, to early teens, to groups of young adults and then right up to retired people there to use as a base and walk for miles. Everyone just seems to gel and get on and we love the atmospheres.

The food is brilliant. The full menu for breakfast wasn’t up and running but it wasn’t a big issue because we could order bacon and sausage sandwiches. The tea time menu was great - finally somewhere where everyone in the family can eat and enjoy! The Penang Curry and flat bread was immense, and the pizzas are always brilliant.

Thank you again. We love this place and we are so grateful to you for giving us holidays we will remember forever. Yes, we love being abroad, but our YHA holidays are the ones we truly cherish. Thank you!

Perfect peaceful getaway. Best breakfast spot ever sat out on the rocks with veg sausage sarnies watching tide go out, with just a handful of other visitors, relaxed kids nibbling while picking their way across the mini estuary. Felt very organised for social distancing, and safe in our own space: very reduced guest numbers, allocated bathrooms, gel/signs everywhere, queue system, really caring staff.

Huge beach (at low tide) away from crowds, with lots of variety: sandcastles, fossils, rockpools galore, wildlife, cliff path, handy for ice cream van too and Robin Hood's Bay chippy/ sweetshop (plus friends staying nearby). Even just a night did me and the kids the world of good, couldn't believe how great it was to have a break from being stuck working from home in lockdown. Great sticky toffee pudding with custard too. Thank you so much

My other half had been talking about this place for a while now. And given that holidaying abroad is currently out of the question we thought that it would be a good idea to book this place, especially since the kids had always enjoyed their previous stays.

We were extremely lucky in that we managed to book the opening weekend, with some Covid restrictions in place still. But man, this place is awesome.

The staff were extremely helpful, and kept their masks on in the communal areas at all times. They couldn't do enough to assist.

The room itself was nice, big, clean and fitted all 5 of us, and the beds were the usual YHA standards of being comfortable. Could have done with some lights for each bed though, but that's a minor niggle.

Due to covid restrictions we were unable to explore the whole YHA, the communal kitchen was closed, as was the drying room and the rooms with the books and board games was nowhere to be seen.

There had been a recent lightning strike at the hostel so we were unable to use the WiFi but actually that just made the trip that little bit nicer.

Even without the rooms mentioned previously there is so much character in the building and so much to look out for. Personal favourite was seeing The Librarian's banana, as part of a banana hunt.
The surroundings of Boggle Hole is just gorgeous, with lots of little walks everywhere. They provide you with tide times so you can walk up and down the beach without worrying too much. Robin Hoods Bay is just around the corner as well as Ravenscar.

Because the communal kitchens were closed we had to book into the restaurant, which was very good, with no complaints from any of our group. Coffee was nice and breakfast was good.

This is the perfect place to take your kids to, at any age. I can also imagine it being a perfect place to escape as a solo traveller or with your loved one.

Much recommended and will very happily come again.

It was difficult to enjoy our stay here as we weren’t actually staying in the hostel as advertised. We were staying in a separate block to the main hostel, which had no proper living area. As we have young children, once they were asleep we were confined to three very uncomfortable chairs in a draughty entranceway each evening with no access to WiFi. We were too far away from the main building and the communal living areas to make use of them once the children were asleep. Access to our room was up several flights of steep steps, which with three children (one of whom needed carrying) and all of the beach gear was less than ideal. The main kitchen wasn’t very well appointed and was full of flies at all times of the day. This is a great hostel, but the distance between the bedrooms and the main building make it a poor choice for families. We checked out a night early as we were fed up with spending our evenings sitting in very uncomfortable chairs in a depressing foyer rather than being able to make use of the living areas. We mentioned this to a member of staff, who wasn’t particularly interested or sympathetic. For this reason and the misleading nature of the booking system, which makes it appear as though the facilities are close enough to actually use, I’m leaving a one star review.

Thank You for leaving your review. We are sorry that your stay did not meet expectations. We do advise guests to do their research on the location of the hostel they wish to make a booking. With YHA Boggle Hole been well known for its rural location in the countryside it is not suitable for everyone as they may struggle with steps and hills it all adds to the adventure of staying at hostels.
