Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

This was my least favourite out of the three lodges. The beds were not comfortable and the rooms could have been cleaner. They smelt and certain parts were dirty (curtains, under and behind the sofa). There were mints on the floor in the bathroom. The staff were ok. The food was ok but in the evening it was like sitting in a disco as the light flickers constantly from the fan. Set meals and little other amenities. No pool so really not anything to do around the river cruises (which are amazing). No wifi at the lodge.

What an amazing place!! Flowers everywhere, light bright rooms with outside seating. A wonderful boardwalk where we saw lots of wildlife including two orangutang ( this was so special !!!). The staff were wonderful . We were very lucky to have Abas as a guide. He was very knowledgeable , extremely likeable , was very available at other times. He was also a great cameraman ( my hands were often shacking so he willingly stepped in ). On the river trips we saw a fantastic variety of animals and birds. He was definitely the best guide we had. The food was good and had great vegetarian options.

We spent 2nights at Abai Lodge and 2nights at kinabatangan lodge. We enjoyed both lodges. Abai was in the middle of nowhere and had a great boardwalk around it. Kinabatangan was on the edge of a town, had a pool and a shop nearby you could walk to. Both lodges rooms were absolutely fine. We paid extra for air-conditioning, which we personally thought was required. Food at both was absolutely fine, some reviews moaned about the food, yes it was limited but freshly cooked and tasty. The lunches at the local homes had more choice and were plentiful and delicious. We loved going out on the boats and thanks to our guide, Basri, we saw lots of wildlife. Orangutans in the wild and one close up. Proboscis monkeys and macaques were plentiful. Small to Large crocodiles, so many hornbills, eagles and I could go on for a long time Basri was fabulous. Probably the best guide I think I have ever had the to meet. His knowledge was amazing but not overbearing. He was extremely professional, we always knew what we were doing and what to wear or take. He had a gentle mild manner about him and knew what we had seen and what to focus on next. He seemed to be the guide that spotted everything and the other guides followed. Would highly recommend him, and the whole trip. October seems to be a great time to go as tourist numbers seem low and weather was ok, apart from 2 soakings!!

Abai is a lovely place, with a quiet vibe. A huge plus is the boardwalk at the back of and around the chalets. There are any number of creatures to spot here. We found the location and ambience to be better than at the Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge, but overall the food wasn't nearly as good. We enjoyed the company and guiding of Edmundo enormously, caught up in his very enthusiastic manner. Prices for beer & wine were fine A nice spot for launching some river cruises

What a fabulous guide called Abass, he ensured we saw all the wild animals in the rain forest, his knowledge was amazing. Although the accommodation and food was basic the staff were incredible and a great setting

Four of us (2 couple’s) stayed for 2 nights between 22-24th Sept. We all had a truly memorable stay we all agreed made possible because of all the excellent staff including captain of our boat trips, the company of other travellers and a wonderful setting on the river. A special mention must go out to our guide Abass who was professional and still good for a laugh with us all too. We could see he was wanting to make our experience the best it could be and it was. In 2 days Abass escorted us on several boat trips, a night walk and lunch at local village. Abass could spot animals so far away and made sure we could all see before moving on. We saw crocodiles, elephants, lots of different birds and monkeys and several orangutan’s. One came into camp on our last morning as we ate breakfast. I understand not always possible to see them, but Abass did for us and hopefully you will too. I agree with others, this is not a top end resort in terms of rooms and food choices, but you are in the middle of Borneo and we had no complaints with either but I knocked off a star to reflect this.

The place itself is very good. The accommodation was fine, basic but ok. The walks around the lodge were great fun. The food was good. The reason for the three rather than a five is our trips with George. George is a nice guy but I don’t think guiding is for him. He smoked the whole time on the boat. He sniffed all the time and his phone goes off with alerts when all you want to do is listen to the rainforest. If that is not bad enough, he makes stuff up. Either he believes what he is saying or is playing a game, either way he shouldn’t do it. One example was how the fire flies create kinetic energy by flapping their wings and running a dynamo. Not good enough. Leo, who we had very briefly was outstanding along with Fizal who drove the boat.

Very basic accommodation and food not great. The river trips are brilliant and our guide Atok was amazing and brilliant. No air conditioning in room - and internet is extra. Beer is not expensive. It takes an hour and 10 to get there from main land in a boat. Saw crocodiles, monkeys owls and load more

Firstly ask for Edmundo as your guide, he is the most experienced and takes really good care of his group. He goes above and beyond in comparison to the other guides even sitting with you after the tours so you can ask him questions. Yes the accomodation and food are simple for a 4/5 star place but please remember you are in a jungle lodge accessible only by boat, compared to how everyone around you lives this is 10/10. Wildlife, we saw really rare birds. Edmundo was a top spotter and clearly passionate. We also saw a wild orangutan eating from the lodge boardwalk so make sure you go exploring. Please remember tips do make a difference to these people, £10 for you is a lot for them.

Avoid single rooms!!! Although we paid an extra charge for single occupancy to our travel agent, single rooms are small.. Mine, no 2 was just a hot corridor. No air-conditioning. The location is wonderful, surrounded by beautiful jungle and accessible only by boat. Stuff was kind and helpful. The dinner buffet food was average and breakfast was very poor, but in a very nice place on the boardwalk near the jungle. Our guide, Eric (Irix), was excellent, knowledgeable and great spotter too!
