We did a photoshoot with Pacific Dream Photography! Had the BEST experience with Cynthia! We had a big family photoshoot (13 people and 3 kids!) and she was accommodating and playful the whole time. We got beautiful shots we’ll treasure forever :) highly recommend!! This hotel is truly something special - definitely plan a trip out!

Lovely hotel with a private secluded entrance and a small beach Highlights: - free beach rentals when the surf isn’t too rough - free laundry room to wash your clothes on the first floor -snorkeling right off the beach when the surf isn’t high- easy to get in and out of the water without any big rocks - turtles right by the rocks that you can see from the hotel - whales by the hotel - manta ray viewing- sadly didn’t see any from the hotel but the boats were out almost every night. Platinum got us a continental breakfast which was small so most days we upgraded to the buffet which was HUGE. So many varieties of fruit, yogurt, omelet and waffle bar, lots of meat options, pancakes, oatmeal, salad, miso soup, rice, bread and cake options. Definitely worth the upgrade. You can also hike along the beach to the Westin and take one of their evening shuttles back.

We wouldn’t come every year if it wasn’t a favorite.. we do 5 nights, hardly move from our beach loungers ..save for golf, yoga, hike To Hapuna or small beach north of hotel, snorkel or paddle board . The familiarity of coming again and again , knowing it’s reliably good ..the best beach, where to get coffee, where we want to sit, when the mantas arrive .. sure it’s pricey and sometimes the food or something is annoying..those lifeguards never want u to take a board ou or be helpful.. sup yoga never happens in winter , close those umbrellas if there is a tad of wind, have to grab a mat at the gym On way to class .. small things.. yes property is aging and yes Fredericos are $19 Each .. but we have seen changes over the years that focus on the guest experience like water bottles or beach bag on room, free manta breakfast for Bonvoy ( now there is a fee again?) , all rentals at beach complimentary., peloton bikes added , we did spa once and not again. It’s nothing special, skip hair salon, skip the luau , don’t miss golf.. it’s wonderful, look For mantas at night, catch the best sunsets, sleep Under an umbrella or in a cabana.. splurge on the clam Bake Or Holiday meals on the lawn if you come at that time of year..really so Impressive and beautifully done, we like the gear.. it brings some Aloha home.. rest and recharge is worth it , so infrequent and we have so Many wonderful Memories spent here. We have traveled All Over the world and we come back again and again so that speaks volumes . The condos/homes across the highway are nice too and great for larger groups. April 2024 a large scale remodel Is happening so I bet we won’t be able to come next year if it’s not done which is sad .. but will start saving Marriott points now for our return after the refresh. They are adding adult pool/improved spa, redoing rooms.. it’s been talked about for years. thank you Nuoy for the room upgrade this trip( first time we have ever been upgraded ) wonderful view and we so enjoyed this slice of annual sojourn to Heaven this week

We just returned from a week at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, and we hated to leave. The location is wonderful. The hotel is situated to provide excellent views of the ocean, the whales, and the marvelous sunsets. We took the "stay 4 days and get the 5th night free" option, which defrayed somewhat the price of the room, and were upgraded to an oceanfront King room in the main tower for the same rate as the lesser room we had booked. The room was huge, with a very spacious lanai. The bathroom was equally large, with its own lanai. The bed was comfortable, linens in good condition. All the electrics worked. But two things REALLY were excellent - the beach and the beach restaurant, and the STAFF. Everyone we came into contact with was friendly, polite, and efficient. They seemed to genuinely care that we had the best possible experience during our stay. We didn't play the golf course, but we walked it and it was in great condition and looked quite challenging. Neither did we use the Spa, so can't comment on that. The entertainment in the Copper Bar was good every night we were there. The only weakness in the entire stay was the food. Meals at the Beach restaurant were good. But the two meals we ate at the Copper Bar were of mixed quality. Dinner at Manta was overpriced and not particularly appetizing. The breakfast a la carte menu was usually good and the buffet was very overpriced. I hear the hotel is due for a remodel and perhaps the kitchen situation will be addressed then. Despite that, I'm still giving this hotel 5 stars because, for us, the attributes mentioned above far outweigh the glitches. This is not the place to come if you want constant activity, noise and motion. It is quiet and tranquil. This location is a small slice of heaven and very relaxing. As I said, we hated to leave.

We were a bit extravagant and stayed in a corner unit with a private tub area. Everything was so wonderful. The service, the grounds, the beach (outstanding for body surfing) and all the restaurants. It was a bit rough seas for good snorkeling.. the mini cabanas along the beach are first come first serve with good cushions. The prime ones are claimed by 7am but the others were available.

This aging property is situated in a beautiful spot with gorgeous sea views. It is however very expensive for what you get in return. The reason I can't give it a higher rating is due to the value, some pretty atrocious service and the lack of ability to connect to hotel wifi on my laptop - that last one was pretty huge as I had a number of personal admin items I was planning to get to while sitting on the beach and as the only person who does my role in a global company, I still need to be checking in at work while on vacation. On the positive side there were some nice welcome amenities from both the hotel and my Marriott Ambassador for the birthday stay. Though I was not afforded a suite upgrade for Ambassador status, the King room I did have was very spacious and had excellent views. The spa is very poorly run from an operational standpoint. Though the hotel try to distance themselves from it, by stating that they're independently owned, putting in place some SLAs or other expectations given the spa is onsite would not be a bad idea. The treatments at least, are decent. The $27 upgrade cost to buffet breakfast for Bonvoy elite members was extortionate I thought. Bonvoyed for sure. The concierge representative set me up with an airport transfer a full 45 minutes earlier than we had discussed. The service at the beachside restaurant was awful with the server refusing to find out what room would be assigned to me as I was waiting after trying to check in so I could charge my food to the room. I don't intend to return and can't in good conscience recommend the hotel to others. Based on the disingenuous and uninterested comments left on the reviews of others, I know management won't care about this and are not interested in improving and my review is solely for other travelers. Breakfast staff, with the exception of an older lady, were largely inattentive after seating you.

I have been obsessed over the Mauna Kea since it opened in 1966. This Iconic hotel was part of Rock Resorts which were developed by Laurance Rockefeller beginning in 1955. Our first visit to the Mauna Kea was for my husbands birthday 8 years ago. We were actually staying down the road and drove down to The Copper Bar for dinner. It was just as I imagined , breathtaking, amazing architecture, a true statement to one man’s vision for a luxury hotel on The Big Island. Dinner was lovely, memorable, and we vowed we would return and spend our next vacation there. In the next few years we traveled four times to spend a week at this masterpiece of architecture. We always booked the same room in the beachfront wing on the 3rd floor. I would love to sit on the big balcony, listen to the sound of the ocean, and read. It was peaceful and the time always went by too fast. Each morning and night we would eat the delicious breakfast buffet in Manta, and dinner in one of the dining establishments. This review has been a few months coming since our two nights in October. We had points, so used them as we had booked a condo for this week. Unfortunately the rates at the Mauna Kea have become absurdly high, around $1,000 a night for a golf course room with no breakfast included, just a bed that we had an issue with the value anymore. Our room was okay. The bed was terrible and my side had a major leaning to the right. I didn’t contact them because I just wasn’t in the mood to make a big deal out of this for two nights. The very expensive coffee maker leaked all over the furniture that next morning..when I contacted the front desk to let them know “we will replace it”. You see that furniture is original and leaking hot coffee will damage vintage wood. The next morning ..you guessed it..it had NOT BEEN REPLACED. Maybe these seem like little things, but to me this hotel is more than a resort, it is history. Everything I experienced, little if any vodka in my cosmo, restaurant supply sticky buns instead of homemade, $30 to park your car, being a guest and having to make reservations for dinner..first night was told we could get in The Copper Bar until 8pm…and on and on tells me we a dealing with corporate America , not history. This hotel is a Marriott and everything they can do to cut costs is apparent. So at this point all I can say is “what a shame” and I will remember our other visits. This last one I am afraid was our last.

I came by to go to the public beach, which I’ve been to several times before in the past. This time, the guard at the gate wouldn’t let me in because “they close access 20 minutes before sunset”. I told him that it was 5:35, and sunset was at 6:00, so we were in before the closing time. He said that sunset was at 5:50. I Googled it on my phone and showed him it was 6:00. He said again he wouldn’t let us in because it was the policy of the hotel. He said we could get valet parking for $50 at the hotel, and let us in. I drove to the public lot to see the situation, but couldn’t get in without a ticket which he didn’t give me. The parking lot had plenty of empty spaces. This never happened in the past at Mauna Kea. Furthermore, other hotels in the area also have public beach access, including Mauna Lani and the Four Seasons. Both let me in this week and didn’t charge me money, and didn’t lie to me about a the time of sunset, and didn’t ask me to pay $50 for valet parking to see a public beach. I plan to stay at both Mauna Lani and the Four Seasons sometime in the future, but this put a really bad taste in my mouth about Mauna Kea. This is totally disgraceful and not a good way to give a good impression of your hotel.

The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, Autograph Collection is best described by my pics – its Hawaii, after all. Overall, the hotel is a bit on the older side. But it is well maintained. As you can see from my pics, the open architecture allows for the great ocean breezes. The hotel layout was quite good; there were several scenic locations throughout the property. There was an upcharge for the balcony view, and it was worth every penny: from the early morning coffee to sunset beverages. Their access to the beach was superb, and the availability of snorkeling with the Manta Rays can’t be beat! This is basically a destination hotel: so meal options and operating hours are limited. So we took advantage of their onsite mini-market for a few simple meals. There is a shuttle to their other corporate hotel for evening meal options. I’d recommend making restaurant reservations as soon as you arrive since the premium times get booked quickly. The attitude of the staff was hit or miss.
