Chandara is wonderful! We had planned to do various trips and outings but the place is so relaxing and peaceful that we cancelled them just to spend our time around the hotel. The hotel is in a very isolated position - no other hotels or restaurants for miles, but somehow that doesn't matter (you can always get a (cheap) taxi into Phuket or Patong if you want more activity). The staff are fantastic, very fiendly and attentive, though not overpoweringly so. It has only been open a few months so is not at full occupancy 40-60% - we had the pools to ourselves. The food is fantastic and although they have you cornered they don't charge silly prices -ok its more expensive than in town, but what would you expect? The spa is beautiful and reasonably priced. The grounds are beautifully planted, the whole place is beautiful and tranquil. Fab views from every angle!

We stayed at Chandara in Jan 2006. The staff were very friendly and polite (they put a table on the beach for us so we could eat our dinner on the beach on our last night). We had a 1 bedroom pool villa and were amazed at how nice and clean is was. Also it was a really big room, with the added advantage (particularly on honeymoon!) that the terrace and private pool were not overlooked. It was pretty quiet- on one day we were the only guests in the hotel- but because the grounds are broken up into lots of seperate areas it wasn't spooky. The views from the terrace are amazing. In the hotel there are flower arrangements everywhere.
It is quite far away from anywhere else- we stayed 6 nights here and also spent some time in Patong for more nightlife. The other potential drawback is that the beach although lovely has quite cloudy water because boats go past and stir up the sandy bottom (but on the plus side it is quite interesting to watch the boats).

We got a complementary massage at the spa- This was really nice and realxing.

This resort has been operating for a year now. During our visit, in the off season, there were no more that four other groups.

I was extremely impressed with the attentive service of the staff. An example was a family which ate all the bread sticks (kids like those). The staff not only brought more, but also a selection of dips. I would call this good service, but the extra service was that they then did the same to ALL the other guests. That took some thought.

Late check-out was given (4PM!)

The resort has a nice, safe beach, again quite empty.

Particularly nicely designed are the balconies. The sun bathing area has been built to give you privacy and the infinity pools were lovely. Just the right depth and size to comfortably cool down in. The rooms were definitely good enough to never leave. Check out the bathroom too - lovely design.

The only negative is that this place is at least 40km away from anything. There are some small shops, but drive in, pack the car with food, etc, and enjoy yourself.

My wife lived in the Spa one day. Three treatments for $120 USD total. A great deal. Apparently the product quality was also extremely high.

Free Wifi everywhere. The "gym" was two running machines, but perched up eye with a view out to see.

What can I say.. I have never stayed in such a terrible accommodation.. The resort is dirty, it lacks maintenance, you can’t go to the beach because it is not clean.. it got the point that we had to buy towels to clean ourselves after shower because they kept giving us stained towels. We asked to speak with the manager and it was pointless. She doesn’t even speak good English.

We recently stayed in Chandara Resort. We were impressed with the villa setting and the pool.
But we were disappointed with the service. Here , we are paying an international pricing but we are getting local service. "Please Clean the Room' Sign was placed outside the villa since morning but when we came back from town in the evening..the room was not cleaned at all. And despite the fact that it was 30 per cent full capacity.
Loud air- con hissing sound could be heard at night in the master bed room and we did not have a good sleep throughout our entire stay.
Food choice is limited in the hotel. There arae only 2 restaurants and 1 of them is only opened and made available for dinner.
Should we come back to Phuket again, we would not choose to stay in this resort again.

As you can see from the reviews..., the Chandara is an amazing place, but not the best place for everyone.

I just returned from the Chandara and will hopefully help you to decide if the Chandara is the place for you.

The staff is wonderful and very helpful. The food is good but given the location and lack of nearby dining options you might crave some additional options after a few days.

You will not like the Chandara if:

a) YOU ARE LOOKING TO RELAX ON A BEACH
It doesn't have one. In fact, walk 100 feet in either direction and you will encounter broken glass and garbage on the rocky beach. The view of the beach and water is amazing...you just don't want to get too close.

b) YOU INTEND TO SPEND MUCH TIME IN PATONG
It is very far and the resort makes a killing on the fee for the car service. They refuse to call a regular taxi so I recommend that you get the number of a cab driver when you are at the airport who you can call directly. I have been to Phuket before. I find Patong to be very low end and full of drunk folks on discount package tours. It is not relaxing at all. I went to Patong one evening and was very glad to return to the Chandara after a few hours.

c) YOU INTEND TO WORK OUT AT A GYM
equipment is limited to 4 pieces of cardio equipment near the pool. No weights or machines

DO stay at the Chandara if:

a) YOU ARE LOOKING TO RELAX IN A BEAUTIFUL QUIET PRIVATE SUITE
I booked at the Chandara because I have been to Phuket before and just wanted to just relax in the privacy of my suite and cool off in the jacuzzi on our private patio. I just love the outdoor shower. I read and borrowed a few movies from the library.

There were young children at the pool but I didn't care because I just returned to my suite.

A few additional tips. The Chandara is located in what has become the new hot area for resort development. Over the next year or so, there will be a lot of construction. Please check ahead of time if that is a concern.

I brought an old unlocked mobile phone and bought a prepaid SIM card at the bangkok airport for about $3 US. Using that for both local and calls home was a fraction of the price of using my phone from home with roaming charges.

We booked through a travel agent. We know Phuket. We assumed that although it was near to the airport, it was certainly not as far out from the town as it proved to be.

The Chandara website shows a glorious white sandy beach.
We therefore 'assumed' one could both use the beach and swim in the sea. Wrong! Misleading.
The beach was dirty, very dirty. It had a small area of 'sand' but the majority of the beach was predominently shell and stone.
The sea was dirty - ie oily and littered with debris and very rocky.
There have their own jetty from where you can take their speed boat to other island beaches (because you can't use that of the Chandara.)
The hotel is far from the town - ie Phatong. Over 30 minutes and 800 Th baht each way. If you want to stay in town late or travel around Phuket it is very expensive therefore to do so.
We are experienced travellers in Thailand. We were blessed to find our own driver we had known in Phuket from the previous year. Without him we would have been very stranded and virtually held to ransome financially with the need to hire taxis. He collected us daily, stayed with us/waited for us wherever we wished to go and then returned us in the evening, sometimes very late. We were therefore free to negotiate our own fares with him so that all parties were more than happy.
I can't imagine how we would have been able to get back to the hotel had we not had our own driver.

There is the facility of their day shuttle bus to Surin Beach - but you are then restricted to their timetable and times are limited and you are also dependent on the wishes of others.

The hotel restaurant closes at 10. The bar closes at 11pm.
We found this very frustrating. There is 24 hr room service.

On a positive note, the food was good. The staff were helpful. The bar staff especially were exceptionally attentive and caring.
There are some areas regarding hygene and cleanliness amongst the staff and kitchen area I had issue with and felt that needs to be addressed.
The female assistant manager was highly professional and nothing was too much trouble for her.

We were upgraded to a villa ; a two room pool villa. This was delightful, clean, comfortable and modern. The housekeeping staff were exceptional in their service and willingness to help and please.

I have to say that it was our villa and the fact that we had our own driver that prevented our last nine days of our four week trip around Thailand from being a serious disaster.
I was very upset that I had no beach or sea to avail myself of.

The pool was pleasant but when busy with other guests, too crowded to have a decent swim.
The poolside shower did not work. It consisted of two very weak trickles of water with a broken handle.
The poolside toilet (one) was not clean and needed a new toilet seat.

The two 'very small' glass areas which each house two items of fitness machinery were not as clean as could be. They need to be sprayed regularly to prevent mosquitoes and for hygenic purposes when used by so many guests.

We hired a private boat for the day which we boarded from their jetty, to tour islands and to snorkel. We planned our own itinerary and the service was perfect as was the day and the trip.

The spa was very pleasant. The staff were as always, helpful and caring. I found the treatments however very average.

If you know Phuket then this hotel is just too far away from the centre. There is just too much to avail yourself of in this wonderful island. I would recommend that you hire your own car or scooter.

This is a place for couples and honeymooners. It is a place for those who don't need a beach or the need to swim in the sea.
It is a place for writers and painters and people who delight in tranquillity and silence and a spectacular view.
This is a place for people who are perhaps new to Phuket and perhaps don't realise how much there is to see and enjoy.

A small point however: They are beginning the development of the island directly opposite the Chandara. This is to become a 7 star hotel/resort/villa development from Dubai. It is already becoming noisy and sound carries considerably.

To sum up: The hotel view was worthy of 5 stars as was our personal accommodation. However overall i would only aware 3 stars for facilities.
We will return next year, but this time we will either rent an apartment further south of Phuket or stay in a hotel far more central to the island. This way we will retain our tranquillity but have access to more of Phuket.

The Chandara is a beautiful peaceful and very tropical resort. I stayed with my partner for 8 nights end of April early June 07. I visited Patong and could not wait to get back to the peace, tranquility and beauty of the Chandara hotel. I stayed in the 2 bed villa just really for the beautiful view and the facilities. I will definitely be booking to go back again.
Wow, is a word i would use with the Chandara hotel. Robert, the manager and Manee and another manager that i cant remember his name (sorry) were fantastic. All staff were extrememly pleasant. Any queries or issues they sorted out immediately. If you want the hubba bubba this hotel is not for you. Patong looked seedy to me.
Remember your holiday is what you make it. Another reviewer has added their pictures judge for yourself but in my opinion you wont be sorry that you booked to stay at this hotel. I went into town to watch Spider Man at the Cinema in Central. so basically use Chandara as your base and go out and about to your attractions. You wont be sorry.
A special thank you to Robert the manager. Your Great

The place is absolutely wonderful for honeymoon. My husband and I visited Thailand and stayed at Chandara for 6 nights in mid November. If you want lots of activities and tourist-y things, this is probably not an ideal place. It's great for lounging and relaxing...and doing what people on honeymoon do....HAHA. They were generous enough to upgrade us to a two bedroom villa. We had an enormous deck facing the bay. There was total privacy and the service was impeccable. EVERYBODY SMILES ALL DAY LONG. A little weird when u think about it....how the staff there grin at everything. But it was great! Food was delicious, especially the grilled snapper. Reasonably priced. We spent about $100USD per day, which I guess is just about what you would spend at any hotel.

Its a little far from outside restaurants and shops (Patong) but i didn't like Patong much anyway...too commercialized and lots of seedy looking bars...

I give the resort an A+++!

As a seasoned traveller it's often hard to be blown away by a resort that you just happened to stumble upon whilst preparing for a much needed escape from the rat race.

The Chandara Resort however has done just that, every aspect of this resort delivered what we were looking for in a breakaway from the fast pace of the real world.

The resort has 51 villas, we choose a 1 br Pool villa, which was brilliant, the rooms were larger than we expected with a brilliant 4 poster bed, large bathroom, lounge with day bed and of course your own personal pool, which we used day and night... you really never need to leave your room.

The staff at the resort are brilliant from the first minute you arrive they go out of there way to assist you with any needs you have,
a special thanks to "Mr Robert" for making us feel as though we were only guests and that the resort belonged to us. Peach at the tour desk helped us decide what to do, when to do it and even sorted us out with a tailor - Toms International - who did a great job on all the clothes we order, negotiate hard... they always have a little more to give on price.

Things not to miss ... Happy hour at the bar every day is fun, and a great place to meet other guest, most of whom you have never seen although they have been there for days.

Dinner at Eclipse is brilliant and reasonably priced, it is a shame that more guests do not go there for dinner, on the Friday night of our stay a Pool side BBQ was put on for the guests and provided a great opportunity to eat great local seafood, drink lot's of cocktails and chat with the other guest and Robert was a great host.

The Day SPA provides many indulgences at reasonable prices, making every day a relaxing one. I also reccomend that you walk to the pier in the nearby fishing village, where ther are shops to buy additiional supplies for the fridge... just don't do it in the middle of the day as I did... the heat is a killer as I found out.

If your looking for a bit more excitement, head off to Patong beach for the Shopping, the suits, the bars and the constant
sounds of tuk tuk ... tuk tuk... in your ears.. or too Central for the
shops, which are not as inspiring as I had hoped.

We decided that Muay Thai would make an interesting night out, it's noisy and actioned packed, we weren't let down 9 fights all of which were thrilling ones, however it can be a little difficult to work out who is winning...

Although the Chandara resort is 30 mins away from Patong Beach and Central, it is a far better option to go via the hotel shuttle or taxi than to have stayed at a resort closer to town, too many people would interupt the peace and tranquility we were searching for, we were there in off season and Patong was packed... I can't imagine what it would be like in Peak season.

I would however suggest that the resort make the shuttle available more often and at a slightly cheaper rate, and provide the option to hire a local driver for the day.

Would I go back again, certainly, the resort is wonderful and can only get better, I think we already have a villa set aside for us.

Thanks to Robert and the team at Chandara and I look foward to seeing them on my next trip.
