We have just returned from a fantastic few days in The Britannia Inn at Elterwater. We arrived in very wild weather but as soon as you open the door to The Britannia you feel the warmth of this very special pub. The hospitality continued during our second day when a storm took out the power supply to the locality. Instantly LED lanterns were distributed for our rooms before we knew it and the staff rallied round. As darkness fell we all gathered around a roaring open fire in the Bar. Pints continued to be pulled, the wine flowed and then sandwiches appeared. The atmosphere was amazing, everybody chatting and laughing. The bedrooms are very clean and comfortable and full of character in this very special building. The quality of the food was also outstanding. We very much enjoyed our stay and will hopefully be returning very soon. A big thank you to Andy and Anna and their exceptional team.

We were so pleased to find this pub. After several very disappointing meals in the Southern Lake District, we ate here three nights running! What impressed us most, apart from the food, was how well-run the place was - it was always busy, but the staff were super-efficient and always friendly.

We went to have a meal at the Britannia Inn at the beginning of September. It was a late summer’s evening and the seating area at the front of the pub provides a scenic view of Elterwater. I had the 6oz Cumbrian Beef Burger, which includes Smokey bacon, cheese and chips. I wasn’t disappointed and worthy of note is the fact the portion sizes are generous. My wife had the Brit Plant Burger, which includes vegan cheese and chips. She wasn’t disappointed either. The burgers are slightly more expensive than some pubs but you are in the heart of the lakes!

We had a lovely meal and the local draught beers are excellent and obviously well maintained. The staff are also excellent at helping to find a table for the walk-ins. One word of warning though - the wine is horrendously expensive. A 250ml glass is £9.50 - this is for the cheapest wine, and bottles of wine start at £28.50. We come from London, so we’re used to high prices but this is absolutely absurd. We intended to return later in the week with family who were joining us in our lodge - because the food is so good! - but those sort of wine prices spoil it. A shame.

Our room, 4, was directly above the bar and an awful din came up through the floor. It was very noisy and kept us awake when we went to bed before the bar closed. Then well after 11pm there was a series loud bangs as doors were slammed downstairs below us - made our room rattle and shake. Not pleasant. Nice area, mediocre hotel. (Visitors from New Zealand).

I have copied and pasted my response from Google reviews, in a very similar fashion to you! Hi Craig, Thanks for taking the time to write a review. I'm really sorry you found the pub noisy. As with most Inns the rooms are located above the downstairs business. Did you ask for a room change? I'm sorry you found the people having fun and laughing too much. That is what we are about at the Brit, chill relax and have a laugh. Maybe we are just not for you. All the best. Andy Landlord

Lovely few nights at the Britannia Inn, staff welcoming, excellent food and breakfast and a great little spot to explore the area. Some people whinge about parking - there are a few spots by the pub but they also have some other spaces, just need to ask to find out. You can also use the pool up the road, which is an added bonus. The breakfast was great, and we ate at the pub each evening because the other spots in Elterwater pretty much served the same! The Wainwright’s Inn is a short walk too.

I popped in tonight with my wife for a drink, only to be greeted with childish behaved staff. Returning to the bar with a flat pint, their behaviour was the same. After giving me a fresh pint, he simply placed it on the bar. No apologies etc. Shocking behaviour for such a charming pub!

Errm OK, Not the usual review we get for our good crack hard working team. I'm surprised you had a flat pint, we pride ourselves on a proper northern head on beer. Maybe you have the wrong Britannia? Thanks anyway. Andy

We stayed here 3 nights over the jubilee weekend handed the key to our room n.7, it was small and dated and zero internet for the duration of our stay (if we had known no internet we would not have booked this room, says its included in the description), when mentioning it to the staff they said they would look into it but we never heard anything again. The power shower was great but beds squeaky. Breakfast on Saturday was ruined by the rude waitress, we were made to feel not welcome. The back room we were moved too for breakfast was dirty and should have been cleaned prior to anyone having breakfast in. The breakfast itself was good standard but we will not be returning.

Hi there Thank you for taking the time to leave this review and sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your stay. During your stay we were made aware that the internet had dropped and we did look into it for you, as far as we knew it was working again and we had no other complaints. We have tried it numerous times over the past week in room 7 and we have had no issues whatsoever connecting. As for the mould smell we cant seem to locate this? At breakfast the waitress you speak of tried to seat you in the front bar but as we had a larger group staying with us the table you wanted was not available, she did offer 2 smaller tables but this still wasn't good enough, so she then offered you the back bar which your right wasn't cleaned prior to breakfast as this isn't an area we would normally offer. However as you swore at a member of staff we are not saddened by the loss of your custom as we are not here to be sworn at. Kind regards Jenna Assistant Manager

We’ve been visiting Langdale for years but only recently started coming to the Britannia for dinner. Last year we visited after a long walk and had the most delicious gammon steak with eggs and piccalilli, so you can imagine our delight when it was on the menu again this year as a special. I went for venison steak instead and was not disappointed. The steak was huge, tender and perfectly cooked. Nice mix of ‘pub grub’ alongside some more sophisticated dishes. The atmosphere is cosy in the bar and also in the restaurant. Great if you’re looking for a traditional style pub. We can’t wait to return again next year… and the next and next.

We stayed at the Britannia In whilst walking the Cumbria Way. Our hosts could not have been more accommodating, the room was perfect for a single traveller, and dinner and breakfast were excellent. I would definitely recommend. Only criticism was £6plus for a pint is excessive we aren’t in London!
